Ball, Powell Added to Practice Squad

November 3rd, 2009 - 4:46pm by Gray Caldwell

The Broncos on Tuesday announced several roster moves involving the practice squad.

Running back Lance Ball was added to the practice squad, and the club’s second 2008 fifth-round pick, Carlton Powell, was added to the practice squad as well.

In addition, Darius Walker was waived from the practice squad, and Everette Pedescleaux was placed on the practice squad/injured list.

Ball is a second-year player who appeared in one game for the Indianapolis Colts in 2008 as a reserve running back. He rushed 13 times for 83 yards and caught one pass for five yards in his first NFL appearance versus the Tennessee Titans. He was a three-year letterman who started 19 of 41 career games at the University of Maryland, and was originally signed by the St. Louis Rams as an undrafted free agent before the 2008 season.

Powell is a second-year player who spent his rookie season on the reserve/physically unable to perform list after injuring his Achilles tendon in the offseason. He started 13 games in each of his final two seasons at Virginia Tech University, helping the Hokies rank no worse than fourth in the nation in both total yards per game and points per game allowed during those years. He had career highs in tackles — 39 — and sacks — 3.5 — as a senior in 2007.

I don’t know much about Ball but he looks like a beast in the Picture, and now maybe Powell will show some spunk and be a part of what we thought he could be when he came to Denver in the first place. Only time will tell.

  2. whitebronco#1 says:

Hmmm… first, Berger from Pittsburg. Now Ball from the Colts… It sounds more like “informants” than real players.Next move, waive McKinnley and add Chambers, and as we already have Dawkins, we will have a player from the next tough teams :D

(Forget Chambers… we have the former SD DL coach -I don’t remember his name right now)

Well, good luck to both of them! I hope they can have a real positive impact in the team.

    Go Broncooos!

  3. baylinorcrush says:

I think it has become pretty obvious to McD than other than Hillis, we have no bruising back to give us the hard yards, hence the Ball addition. We are definitely too light at the RB position. A smart addition looks like, hopefully he’ll be able to show us what he’s got before season end.

  4. broncosfreak30 says:

I think it was a BIG mistake waiving Darius Walker from the PS. He did phenomenal during the preseason and could’ve really been great!! It seems like were starting to make some bad moves but we will see!!

  5. broncosfreak30 says:

Well the Cheifs picked up Chambers!!! Thats not good!!

  6. 15themarshall15 says:

chambers is struggleing anyway and ball has as much upside as walker i am just happy powell is back he is a beast i wanna see him do good

  7. BeastFromEast92 says:

I think BF30 is right Darius Walker has great potential, bad call.

  8. Greatness007 says:

There were rumblings in the locker room about Walker. Saying things like” He(moreno) can fumble every game . They still won’t give me a look. If they not gonna use me . They should let me go.” Today they did. lol Be careful what you wish for. Glad to see Carlton back. I thought he woul;d be on another team right about now. He might come off that practice squad this yr. To help us out. Walker will get picked up though. Seems like the Nfl loves picking up old Bronco RB.

For all those who this may concern. The reason Hillis doesn’t get in the game as much now. Is he is lost in McD’s system. Unlike Shannahan, McD is not gonna dumb it down for him. So untill he learns the system and what he is required to do. He will be there to lead block or ST.

Love the inside commentary Greatness. Good to see ya back on here Champ.

If anyone can take a look at this link. You’ll see what I saw at the stadium. We need to step our game up. Our tendencies are starting to be obvious. Good to great defenses will tear us apart if we don’t fix it. I have confidence that we will. Our whole coaching staff and players were made to look foolish. If you look at the press conferences. They felt that way. So it will be fixed.

  10. ocrush4ever says:

Also, Greatness007, the system McD brings from NE is somewhat dismissive of the fullback position. They’d rather use good blocking tight-ends and have that roster spot available for other positions. Remember a play earlier this year featuring a defensive end blocking on a short yardage run? (Fail.) If McD thought he could get away with it, I think we’d have zero fullbacks on the roster. As it is we have one who is a two-way player both impact special teams. If that weren’t true, Larson and Hillis might not be on the roster at all.

  11. BeastFromEast92 says:

Didn’t know Walker was talkin’ smack. Thanks for info Gness.

  12. BeastFromEast92 says:

I think we need to open up the offense more.Keep’em guessing like we do on Defense.4 wide,5 wide, wild horses, whatever it takes. We also need to rush better everybody knows you can’t win if you can’t rush.pound it down their throats!!!!!!!!!!!!BRONCOS FOOTBALL

  13. uub says:

Hey UUb Good to see you. Love that Horsemen website you have over there. I’ve been checking it out. I saw that playbook episode. We have to change things up a bit.

ocrush4ever remember in that game against Dallas. Hillis was lead blocking the play before that one. I guess they thought it was his fault we didn’t make it. As we know now it wasn’t. When they made that switch. We still didn’t make it. Also in the beginning of the game. On our first drive Hillis came in on a 3rd down. I think it was suppose to be a 2 rb set. With Kyle in the middle in shotgun. He lined up on the right side at slot wr. Kyle and Knowshawn were looking at his puzzled. He went in motion and Knowshawn put his hands up in a confused manner. Kyle called time out. Hillis was pulled back out the game after that. That tells me he has not got the playbook down.

  14. Greatness007 says:

Lol@ uub!! You talking to yourself now lmao.

  15. Greatness007 says:

People know you have that website. lol Going 3rd person huh. Good to see you uub. I guess you though I was not reading your stuff. So you started talking to yourself. lmao Yeah Hillis is lost though. Shannahan dumbed things down for him. So he looked better.

  16. uub says:

Noone was talking to me so. I had to do something. I have no friends. lol

  17. Greatness007 says:

Yeah Beastfromeast92!! We started to be like the Pats throwing more than running. We can’t do that just yet. We have switch blocking schemes and all. We don’t do as much zone blocking as usual. Kyle has a lil speed but no quickness. I know it might sound strange, but its true. We need a stable running game to work off of.

  18. BeastFromEast92 says:

    EXACTLY RIGHT!!!!!!!!!

  19. FTR says:

Do not mean to change the subject! But Last week at Baltimore, the Broncos Defense posted an NFL Week 8-best 10 tackles for a loss (31 yds.) with seven run stuffs, two sacks and one on a reception. Just a tid bit!
    Go Broncos
    FTR

  20. BeastFromEast92 says:

    D is playing great !!!!!!!!!!

  21. baylinorcrush says:

No wonder that Ball kid looks like a bull, he is listed at only 5′ 9″, but weighs 220. That can be a lot of low leverage weight coming at you, he is only 24, could be something there…

  22. NY_BroncoMan says:

I am very interested to see how McD and Kyle Ortin bounce back from this loss. With all the talent we have offensively it comes down to play calling (which is the ability to put the talent into action) and QB execution. Don’t get me wrong others need to execute also but the QB is the vital guy when it comes to executing (expecially when our line is playing good as they have been with some exceptions from sunday)

I mean Marshal, Royal, Stokely, Hillis & Shefler have all shined and had big games in the past. I want to see what Orton has. Can he light it up a little and make pressure throws and get the ball down field accurately and stretch the defense??

  23. Marshallman-15 says:

I can’t wait fo monday night. Everybody I know is a pittsburgh fan. It’s time to show them who took their throne as number one defense, even if we may not have that rank.

  24. NY_BroncoMan says:

I want to see Mc D open the playbook up and utilize our weapons and put up 30 points offensively. There is no reason we should be doing so with such a killer RB, TE & WR depth.

Is Kyle Orton are Achilles heal or can he step up and have some consistent big games and throw 250+ yrs a game? He doesn’t have to be Drew Brees, Manning or brady but if we’re going to build a super bowl worthy team, he has to be able to do more.

He did good in the NE game. He spread the ball around and had 300+ yrds. ..allthough he didn’t really stretch the field he played very good. He needs to get back to that and add the deep ball PLEASE. ..or else whats the point of having WR’s that can stretch the field?

I don’t know if it’s Orton or McD (or a little of both) but we have got to kick it up a notch offensively!! We have the guys to do it…if we had no weapons i’d understand but we do!!! Offense please come to life.

  25. Greatness007 says:

To tell you truth NY. I dont think he(McD) really trust Orton throwing down field. You see he doesn’t call those play unless he has to. Like I said all along. He can throw it 20 to 40 yards down field with speed and accuracy. No he can’ throw ot 50 to 70 in the air. Who cares though? Let the WR run the rest. The WR’s got tired of doing 5 to 10 yard routes. Cuz they were getting hit smack in the mouth. To the point, you could see they were hesitating. McD to busy tryna get Gaffney in the game. He is good and all. The other horses are better though. Royal hardly gets and routes for him. It has to be something covered on the other side for him to get a look mostly.

  26. Greatness007 says:

Actually Marshallman-15 INDY is now #1 in points. They got us. We still in total yards though.

  27. FTR says:

    It’s all about game planning!
Relax our Broncos will be alright!

  28. baylinorcrush says:

NYBM, O line good with “some exceptions” on Sunday?!?!?
Might as well call it like it was, BAD offensive play from the line on Sunday was the NORM all game long, not “some exceptions”. I know from previous posts you are sold on believing it was Orton’s bad on Sunday, and that’s fine, but they are plenty of us out here like I who believe Orton had a poor outing mainly as a direct result of the poor play of the O line. Give him good protection next week, he does poorly, then I’ll say he had a horrible game. This just wasn’t the case. How would you feel coming into a game on the road in a hostile environment and on the very first play of the game, get leveled so hard you would have trouble remembering where you’re at. And they kept on coming and coming all game long, the O line being completely out played and leaving Orton sitting there like a dead duck.
I know you are an old Cutler guy, but you would get your point across better about how inadequate you feel Orton is if you came here after the first six games we won and made your point then, it might of been better recieved. You are just picking the worse week of the season to put Orton down.
It’s not rocket science to figure that out, even for a Yankee fan. LOL. Sorry, couldnt help that one, you know outside of New York they are the team people love to hate, because in baseball there is no cap and the richest team win, but that’s another story… Anyhow come back later when the O line does their job and Orton doesn’t do his and make your point. I promise we’ll debate, but this is a dead one to me this week.

  29. Greatness007 says:

That’s all from me folks. Let me check out Brandon on sports soup. lol

  30. RockyMts69 says:

In know way is it fair to blame Sunday’s loss on Orton’s performance. Our O-line was man handled all day long. The Ravens D were physical, agressive, and just flat out nasty! Plus the play calling was pretty ‘vanillia’ in my opinion. McD had two weeks to prepare, and he should have prepared for the worst.

But I feel losing this game is a good thing. Because now Denver can go back and learn from the mistakes that were made on Sunday.

And as far as our D, they looked exhausted in the second half. I thought they did pretty well over all. The only down fall was we never created any turn overs that we could capitolize on

  31. baylinorcrush says:

    Well said Rocky.

  32. Greatness007 says:

On the post before it was in not and. On the Royal statement.

I thought I said it was the play calling. Well maybe I didn’t.

  33. The #1 says:

It looks to me you did. The playcalling will get better. He’s gonna open up that playbook. He has no choice.

  34. broncos20 says:

    lol..funny UUB, talkin to yourself,

thanks for that link…I wonder why half time adjustments werent made to throw the long ball…better yet, our O-line kinda failed us that time…
brings us back to earth…rest assured we will improve from our mistakes..

I wonder why we stopped doing that “wild-horses” formation..seemed like the ravens were preparing all week for the short passes. they probably would’ve never expected the formation…IMO..

ok, on to the next game.
I hope Powell gets a shot. He and Pedescleuax (spelling?) look like 3-4 ends..IMO…but I’m still impressed w/ Peterson and McBean’s all-out effort against these big guys.

  35. BradJamesBroncoFan says:

Ball was a big play threat in college at Maryland so obviously that’s why McDaniels likes him. I think Carlton Powell will be great after we develop him for another year or two. Nice selections. GO BRONCOS!!!

  36. NY_BroncoMan says:

BAYLINOR, I don’t dislike Orton and I’m not blaming Sundays Loss on him…i know it was a team loss. If i sounded that way, thats not what i meant. Everyone sucked on sunday…it was just a bad day.

True i am an old Cutler guy and can’t help the fact i like the guys physical ability n style of play…we waited 10 yrs to find a QB to replace Elway and then…well ya know. No point in revisiting all that. Cutler has his own issues (although i believe McD could have corrected most and turned him into a great QB, would of been a great combo..oh well, we’ll never know)

In any event, I’ve been hopeful about Orton all along and continue to be. I’ve just noticed some things over the first 6 games that make me wonder if he can really be the guy we want him to be. At this point i’m not saying he can’t BUT he has not won me or sold me yet. He’s done some good things but he needs to show more and throwing the ball 50+ yards down field in the air to a WR is one of them.

I’m dying to see the guy thrown into the fire to see what he can really do physically and mentally. He seems too conservative (even though he says “i just take what they give me”..well sometimes u gotta take what they don’t give u) ..its like we went from one extreme w/ Cutler to the other w Orton. He’s gotta get more in the middle. We needed Jay to chill out and stop forcing it so much, but w/ Orton, it’s like please force it some and make some plays already. We have no explosion right now on offense…that’s bad

  37. BeastFromEast92 says:

I agree with NYBM we need some offensive explosion and if Orton can’t give that to us then well,we’ll just see if he can,Ihope he can because we have to have a deep threat to get respect from good defenses.GO BRONCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  38. brian_schneider says:

    Here’s how I see it:
We all would love to see Orton throw the long bomb to Marshall or Royal, we all would get mad if we started doing that and the results were INTs.
McDaniles has a knack for teaching QBs and he’s not going to get stupid overnight, he’s going to play to Kyle’s strengths.
Everyone knows that last weeks perfomance (if you can call it that) was poor, this team has too much leaderhsip and talent to stay down.
For those of you who don’t like Orton and are thinking we’ll draft one..maybe if something crazy happens, but Brandstater is McDaniels project QB. Plus if you do draft a high round rookie QB, what do you do with him, start him so he can play like Sanchez and Stafford..no you groom and train him, which is exactly what McDaniels is doing to Brandstater with Orton and Simms.
Everyone has two cents to put in on what needs to happen, myself included. What needs to happen is we need to play some good football, regardless of who is QB, who’s RB, WR TE, all that jazz. You can’t make everyone happy with the personell that’s in the game, but winning makes everyone happy. So lets get ready to pound our frustration out on Big Ben and the Steelers, oh what time is it you say Big Ben….time for Dumervil to get some more sacks…

    Go Broncos!!!!!!!!

  39. NY_BroncoMan says:

INT’s on long throws are not that bad…they’re like punts. ..plus they’re very rare and more of the WR fault if he cant at least break the play up.

If we can beat the Steelers without stretching the field…i’d be very surprised. They watched the Ravens film and they are gonna bring it likewise and we’re gonna see how r offense responds with play calling

  40. brian_schneider says:

@ NY_BroncoMan: They aren’t that bad in that respect. During the Ravens game if we’d started throwing deep and getting INTs then there is certainly no chance of making a comeback. Not that we mounted a hint of one anyway. I totally agree with you on stretching the field. Polomolu is one of the best safeties out there. We are definitely going to need to stretch the field to keep him away from our guys.
It basically comes down to what we did bad against the Ravens is going to need to be fixed before we play the Steelers. Who knows, I wouldn’t be suprised if they came out in the Wildhorse formation or something like that.

  41. baylinorcrush says:

Well said brian. We’ve been through that many times, there will be no QB drafted early rounds next year, Brandstater is who McD wants long run and I like him too, he had an awesome game against Arizona, was it?

Meanwhile, with what was available out there when the Cutler trade became inevitable, Orton was an excellent choice. A young healthy winning QB with experience, that’s enough right there. To throw 50 yard bombs does not make a winning QB, we know that better than anyone. For the people who are enamored with the bombs, I recommend watching the Raiders. We didn’t win here with Cutler, they’re not winning in Oakland with their bomb master, I don’t buy the “need to throw bombs to win”, that is just hog wash, it’s a lot more complicated than that. Of course if you could have a winner like Orton being able to throw big bombs it would be awesome, but they are not many Brady, P.Manning going around, so we have the best we can have now, period. Orton can still throw it long and has done it 4 times with over 40 yard throws, it’s not like he doesn’t have an arm, as many refer to him. He will get it down plenty in future games if the game plan calls for it and the O line gives him the time. I think in the game plan regard, you guys should be more upset at McD for not calling on the long game more rather than at Orton. Trust me, if Orton is called upon to do it more, he will because he can. Except last week, hard to throw when you’re on your back, or on the way there, all game, already discussed that.

What it is, seems like to me, is some of you guys who are in your twenties or thirties have grown to love the Broncos and their winning ways mainly through Elway and so you are sold onto the only way we can do it again is in that fashion, so you fell in love with Cutler and you just don’t get it. There are many different ways to win it all in the NFL. From the Great D’s of Baltimore and Tampa Bay and their none bomb throwers QB’s, Dilfer and Johnson, to the all out air attacks like the Rams and Kurt Warner. But one thing that is not debated enough here this year is how important the running game is to winning it all. Elway would of never won it without Davis, Warner had Marshall, etc… If you guys, who are so enamored with Cutler and bummed out at Orton, looked a little closer into were we’re at as a team right now, you would see you are way off the mark.

The running game has to be the major concern, we have no power runner other than Hillis who we don’t use and we rely onto what I would call two finesse runners. I got news for you, that won’t cut it later in the season, when the weather gets wet and cold and you have to win games the hard way, by grinding it out on the ground. The Ball addition to the practice squad is obviously to alleviate that, but it might be too little to late. I’ m telling you , you guys lose focus by falling for fluff and allowing it to blind you from the reality of it all, a game is first and foremost won or lost in the trenches. Give me some hard nose playing football grinding it on the ground with a great defense, I am a happy man, because I love winning. You just go for the show and hope for the best and end up losing because you are not fans of substance, just fans of the show.

As I keep repeating, and there is nothing wrong with it, it is what it is, it’s a generation thing. It always makes me laugh when these 14 year old kids come on here and comment that knowledge of football has nothing to do with age, some of them are smart, I’ll give you that, and they are refreshing but they have so much to learn. There is no way to explain to someone young what experience he will gain with age, only living one’s life will make you understand it. At my age, you’ve seen all the fluff and all the glitz and realize in the end it was all pretty fleeting, to where substance stays, the hard learned lessons, like winning in the trenches, that’s what it’s all about. The harder you have to grind it out the most memorable it will be. I, for one, am glad I was not born in this instant gratification era, not to mention undisciplined, I like it the hard way, discipline, patience, hard work and a good night sleep. Please, lay off Orton, he has done nothing but making us proud again. Do the right thing, support him, I like him he is an old school tough guy, respect that. One day you’ll understand.

  42. Greatness007 says:

Not to be a barrier of bad news. Everyone is saying” If he throws the long ball it might get INT’d.” lol Were we watching the same game?? It was 4 Ints the Ravens should of had. We caught breaks. This loss could have been much much worse. Good for us it wasn’t. I never was blaming Orton. Just at some point in the season. The hand cuffs gotta come off. If there is competition in every position. Like they keep telling us. Then we are not seen things like they are. If Orton isn’t allowed to on the premise that it’s not his strength. Then no QB we have not is ready to do so. So were stuck doing what were doing. If you don’t already know. Orton can’t throw it 50+ in the air. Everyone including him knows that. On the on INT he has. He throw it from the 45 to 50yard line. He had to parachute it to the 5. So what does that tell you?? He just missed the End zone by mistake? lol

  43. Greatness007 says:

So with that said. We have to run more sharper routes. Come in and out of our breaks quicker. We need to help out the QB we have. No point in waiting or hoping for another. We don”t need another. I think it’s more of playcalling and WR,TE, RB, and O-line not doing there jobs. When Shanny was here. If you remember. He would always say”I’m just tryna get Marshall to play WR” People be running routes that are not in the game plan. Plus the ones that are. They half a$$ them when they not the primary WR. With Jay they all ran like they were the Primary. Cuz they never really knew where he was gonna go. In the Pats game and 2nd half of Dallas. They did the same. Ran like they were all the primary. Now it looks like they are hesitating. That needs to be fixed. Then you can evaluate Orton properly.

  44. thatdude807 says:

I’m going to say this… playing against a great defense the QB has got to be able to make plays happen, in other words make something out of nothing… thats what good QB’s do… joe flacco did it to us- we had him stopped a couple of times but he made something out of nothing… WE NEED THIS GAME BAD CAUSE THE COLTS & BRONCOS ARE THE TOP SEEDS RIGHT NOW- PATS & PITS ARE RIGHT BEHIND

  45. The #1 says:

I think that’s the point everyone is not seeing. Orton is not a great QB. He is a good to average QB. Our Great receiving corp Has to play that way. Our Great O-line has to play that way. Just to give you the opinion that he(Orton) can be great. He not a franchise QB. You know 50 to 100 mil type. He is a good one plain and simple.

  46. gdingel says:

Lots of good points. I really want to see how this team plays after a loss. The defense looked good but where on the field a lot and with no huddle offense and no subs the D got worn down. Denver D is still really good. Offensively we need to get better Coach McD just needs to get our goods players involved in the game B. Marshall should be getting the ball more how about a few drag routes for Royal. Tony Scheffler big guy spread him out and get good match ups against smaller DBs. Also we need to establish a run game and I think it should a be a mix of RBs. Broncos our a good team and have put themselves in position to win this division which is what we would all like to see.

  47. baylinorcrush says:

“the point everyone is not seeing”? I don’t recall anybody here EVER calling Orton a GREAT QB. Drinking that Kool-aid early today I guess… LOL.

  48. mudrat says:

Yeah, Orton is average, but with time he could become great, you never know! I miss having an explosive offense for sure, but I love our D, so I can’t complain too much. I hope we come out Monday night ready to kick some Steelers ASS!!! Those stupid Chargers fans are already claiming the division to themselves just because we lost one game and they’ve won 2 back to back against KC and Oakland(BIG DEAL!). Saying they will take it by week 12, etc. So let’s shut those stupid Chargers fans up and win Monday night in a convincing way!

  49. baylinorcrush says:

See, still no one is addressing the running game, after we had 55 yards last week, other than the Orton run. But everyone still talks about Orton. I guess my post was all for naught, which I’m used to. LOL.

  50. broncosfreak30 says:

I have always said that Orton is a great QB, even as soon as he came here, I went back and watched all his big plays for Chicago and saw that he was a winning QB in their system which I always knew he would be especially with our offensive weapons and o-line!!! I knew that for sure! It was pure fact!!!

    GOOO BRRROOOONNNCCCOOOSS!
