Bailey To Be Named AFC Defensive Player of the Week

October 6th, 2009 - 5:43pm by Chris Gentilviso

After a sterling performance against the Cowboys, Champ Bailey is set to receive a conference honor.

The NFL informed the Broncos on Tuesday that Bailey will be named AFC Defensive Player of the Week for games played during Week 4 (Oct. 4-5).

This marks the first time that Bailey has received such an award in his six seasons with Denver. He was twice named NFC Defensive Player of the Week as a member of the Washington Redskins (Week 6 in 1999 and Week 4 in 2003).

Bailey had a season-high eight tackles, a game-high four passes defended and his first interception of 2009 in the 17-10 victory over the Cowboys. Those four pass breakups tied for the highest single-game total in the NFL this season.

A pair of Bailey’s pass breakups came at key times — the final plays of the game, halting Dallas on third- and fourth-and-goal from the Denver 2-yard line to preserve the Broncos victory. His interception also came at a crucial point in the first half, halting a Cowboys drive at the Denver 3-yard line.

Bailey is the first Bronco to receive an AFC Defensive Player of the Week honor since Elvis Dumervil did in Week 14 of the 2007 season. His selection makes him the 21st Bronco to receive the award since its initiation by the NFL during the 1984 season.

The Cowboys actually could of tied the game on Sunday, twice (3rd and 4th down)Goodman got beat on the slant route. Just fortunately for us Romo had his eyes on Haurd the whole time.

Braylon Edwars to Jets! Well, at least it means that they won’t be sniffing in our door anymore for Marshall.

Doesn’t matter they way Marshall has been acting and performing, he deserves to remain a Broncos for a long time. Especially if he keeps acting like a professional.

This week may be the biggest test for Denver’s defense. As for Welker, he is like a younger and quicker version of Stokley, and it will not be Goodman matched up on him. Welker is a slot guy, and we are going to put either Jack Williams or Andre Goodman on him, depending on who is ready to go. That will be one of the key match-ups, Welker vs. whomever we have going on third down for the Pats. If they can convert and sustain drives, it will be a long day.

The greatest advantage Denver has will not be found in between the sidelines, but outside of them. It’s McDaniels. He is the greatest asset Denver has going into this game. Why? Let’s go back in time a little bit, to the 2001-2002 Super Bowl. Raiders vs. the Buccaneers. Rich Gannon vs. Jon Gruden. Jon Gruden helped make Gannon into what he was, and when Gannon was fired, he inherited the team that Dungy built in the Buccaneers. At that time, Gannon was one of the top two or three QB’s in the league, but you can’t tell by watching the tape of that year’s Super Bowl. Gruden turned Gannon into a Pro-Bowl QB–and then utterly destroyed him, Gannon threw five interceptions in the loss. Though Gannon returned to form the next week in Honolulu with 5 TD passes, he was never the same in the regular season, nor has the Silver and Black ever been the same. Gruden knew his quarterback well enough to know how to make him fall apart, to destroy the QB he had created.

Now it’s not quite that dramatic this week. I believe Charlie Weis is more responsible for Brady’s meteoric rise than McDaniels, but here’s a tidbit: Brady has not ever played against a former offensive coordinator, since Weis went to the collegiate ranks. McD was his second OC, and this will be Brady’s first match-up against someone who coached and mentored him. McD knows what Brady wants to do, against man, against zone, against blitz, in the redzone, in between the 20′s…McD knows Brady inside and out, and that is what I believe will be the key for a Broncos victory this week.

McDaniels will have to destroy the QB he guided to a record-breaking season.

Not to say that you’re wrong, RoyalBlue86, but don’t you think that whatever advantage we have over the Pats they also have over us? Belechick and McDaniels both helped make that offense and know it like the back of their hands, and they are both running the same offense. You are correct in saying that it will be beneficial for the Broncos to have “inside info” on the Pats offense, but they will have the same on us! I think the game will really come down to a battle of defenses- who can shut down the run and make the opposing offense go one-dimensional earliest, and who allows the fewest big plays.

First off – WAY TO GO CHAMP, what was romo thinking throwing your way? not 0nce but twice, even after the pick, WOW, #24 IS STILL THE MAN. Now this game on sunday vs the pats, lets not forget so soon about the cowboys #1 RUSHING about 193yds per game and we kept them under 79yds last sunday. The pats have taylor, faulk, morris, and someone else , sorry cant think of his name, but there running game is nowhere like dallas and we all saw what the defense did to them. There passing game has moss, welker for the most part, but i see our secondary in dawkins, goodman, hill, and champ to clamp down on them. We have marshall, stokley, royal , just to start with the main 3, and i keep saying this, but the glove has got to come off of Orton soon, don’t you think? IT WILL COME DOWN TO WHO BLINKS FIRST( LOL ) GREAT MATCH-UP FOR WEEK 5 IN THE NFL. DEN-24 PATS-16

Maybe McDaniels should tell Brady to take off the skirt and be a man.

  9. Dynamicdave says:

RoyalBlue86, I have to disagree. Brady’s best stats as a pro occurred when McD was the O coordinator and QB coach.

Denver should come away from this game with a victory. A hard fought victory, but a victory, nevertheless.
