Atwater Headed to Colorado Sports Hall of Fame

October 9th, 2012 - 1:05pm by Gray Caldwell

Just 12 days after he was listed as a candidate for the Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2013, former Broncos safety Steve Atwater received another honor.

The Ring of Famer is one of six individuals that will be inducted into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame this April.

Atwater, the 20th player to be inducted into the Broncos Ring of Fame in 2005, was a first-round pick in the 1989 NFL Draft. He was voted to a franchise-record tying seven consecutive Pro Bowls, and his eight total Pro Bowl selections are the second most by a player in Broncos history.

During his 10-year career with the team, he started all 155 regular-season games, recording 24 interceptions and serving as a key leader in the club’s back-to-back Super Bowl titles.

The induction banquet will be held on April 18, and tickets are available for $175 each. Since its inception in 1965, the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame has inducted 222 individuals, excluding the most recent class of six.

Atwater will join a number of former Broncos in the hall, including most recently defensive lineman Alfred Williams.

WOOT WOOT!!! Go ATWATER!!!! I gotta admit he was and still is my all time favorite player on the Denver broncos, of course along with the whole 97′ and 98′ roster. But Steve Atwater is Def. my number fav. player!!! Congrats #27!!! We def. need another Safety just like you, maybe you could step into one of there practices somtime and Show Rahime and Carter a thing or two about how to put it down on these running backs and recievers.

    Go Broncos!!!

As far as safeties go I’ll always be a Dennis Smith fan first and foremost but Atwater was great too, congrats!

BTW, did I mention our current safeties play? LMAO.

yea I wish there was a way to get them trained up to Atwaters or smiths level of play. But to play with that kind of intensity you got to have alot of heart and drive. Everytime I think of Atwater I think of that hit he made on the chiefs RB Okoye who was supposedly the hardest hitting running back of the time. But Atwater put him in his place and was never the same after that hit!!!
Of course I was only about 5 at the time But I still goosebumps and get pumped up everytime I see that hit on the highlights.

Get it its def. worth it. Also the best part about getting older broncos jerseys is you dont have to worry about them being traded or going to another team cuz they already retired. For example I still have a Tebow, Brandon Marshall, and Jay Cutler jerseys hanging in my closet because I just cant find it in myself to ever throw a broncos jersey away. Fortunatly though I still have a champ bailey,Peyton Manning, Terrel Davis, and prob. about 5 John Elway jerseys…Plus my Steve Atwater Jersey which is a throwback orange crush jersey. I want to get a throwback Romanowski Jersey next, then maybe a McCafery….Shoot I would get all the 90′s era Broncos if I could… Mainly because that was just the timeframe I grew up in, I was born in 87.

Steve Atwater may have cracked skulls, yes! He could have been a superstar in any era. Including this anti-violence era. If he is not named to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, it is yet another on the extreme list of great NFL players from Denver who get overlooked by the media.

ah how I miss that Bronco D with Atwater, Smith, Fletcher, Mecklenburg, Braxton, Henderson, Kragen, even Micheal Brooks….what a great D we had!

Would love to have Kragen and Mecklenburg back in the middle and Atwater backing them up with Champ and the Doom and Gloom….wow that would have been fun to see!

dont forget about John mobley too, he was a bad ass then too aswell. You know who I miss to who not to many people talk about is Bill Romanowski. Now he’s a linebacker that struck fear into players hearts!!!
