Attitude Yields Results for Defense

November 15th, 2012 - 4:26pm by Sam Davis

The Denver defense has emerged as one of the best in the league in 2012, allowing a league-low 4.7 yards per play while leading the NFL with 31 sacks.

But cornerback Champ Bailey isn’t satisfied. He believes the team still has much more room to grow.

“We’re a decent football team right now, but we could be so much better,” Bailey said “And we know it. That’s what we need to concentrate on and the rest will take care of itself.”

To their last three opponents, the Broncos have surrendered 14, 23 and 14 points in addition to a second-half shutout against San Diego before that. Linebacker Von Miller points to the team’s attitude and ability to stay loose on the field.

“It’s just the attitude we get in here,” Miller said. “We’re all excited to play together. When you play together, it’s fun. That’s what you saw last Sunday — all the guys out there having fun. Hopefully we can replicate that this weekend.”

Safety David Bruton believes that some of that demeanor comes from the defensive coordinator. Bruton said that Jack Del Rio brings “aggressiveness” and “intensity” to his unit and it has spread to the players.

“He definitely brings that to the table,” Bruton said in a fan forum with season ticket holders. “He’s not a laid-back coach, he’s a guy who gets on your butt when you do something wrong and he’s a guy who will pat you on the back when you do something right.”

While Bailey looks for continuous improvement on defense from week to week, he looks back on the recent defensive performances – the sacks leading to good field position, the turnovers and the defensive touchdowns – and knows the unit has been performing well.

“I know we have a little bit to do with those 30-some points going up every week,” Bailey said. “It feels good.”

Touched on what Bruton is saying about Del Rio earlier, saying his hard nose style of coaching is a good compliment to Fox’s “good nature nice guy no matter what” style, except towards replacement refs, LOL. Great balance there.

I wish I knew that JDR would be around for more than just this year..

He’s awesome and the rest of the NFL is sure to take notice…

I just hope a scrooge like Jerry Jones doesn’t lure him to the Cowbutts….

I hurts enough to know we will probably lose him and have to start over again on DC…

I TRUELY WISH THAT THE CURRENT COACHING STAFF CAN ALL STAY ON FOR PEYTONS ENCORE YEARS….

    THE NEXT 4-5 YEARS….

I LOVE ME SOME JACK DEL RIO…….!!!!ILMSJDR!!!!!

I actually think JDR will be around for awhile. From what I’ve heard when he’s been asked about leaving Jacksonville and coming to Denver, he has almost sounded relieved to NOT be a head coach anymore. JMO. So, that being said, I have a strange sense of confidence that he’ll be with Denver for the next 3-5 years. At least.

    Go Broncos!

QB’s and Coaching Staff…keep them together and you build a strong organization. The current Coaching Staff all the way up to the owner is first class. Del Rio staying for a few years would be huge. He will be offered a HC position after this season, hopefully he’d rather stay and have a run at a Super Bowl. Also, I am so pleased with Fox. He was successful in Carolina and brings a tremendous improvement to Denver from the past several years. As for Elway, it’s amazing and appears that he is good at evaluating talent. In the past two years he’s built a strong team with good depth.

I think JDR will stay put for a while. Much like Nolan, after a while u just realize u are a far more impressive DC than you are a HC. Jags D was generally good for years under JDR but whole team stunk. Time for him to stick to what he does best. We sure could use the consistency. Losing Allen sucked but good to see the raiders crash and burn.
