Jay, you know those last three years on your contract are the three that will make this franchise the first to win three Super Bowls straight, don’t ya?

I’m good at being optimistic but still always being prepared for the worst… It’s only been three years with us, Jay, and already, if we lost ya, it’d feel like when any of the other greats, when their time with us was over…. Anyway, cheers to the Broncos! And all our fans!

Thanks for the post Kyle, some of us do actually recognize what you DO provide, and are likely capable of – at this point – and appreciate it greatly when someone lays it out in a way that is (if a little snarky – lol – but I could see that, some of the things people say that can create almost a grudge againts idiocy) making clear what exactly we should worry about (and you too Monodono – you’re always lookin’ out, thank you)

Even if Cutler is completely in the right here, even if he has done nothing wrong and has no responsibility whatsoever to be the one to resolve the situation, he might want to rethink things and do what it takes to make sure he stays in Denver. Why? Well, of all the teams that are rumored to be interested in acquiring him through a possible trade, most have issues that may cause him to regret having such thin skin.

Take the four most repeated rumors. DETROIT, CLEVELAND, NEW YORK JETS, and TAMPA BAY.

First, Detroit: This is a team that won 0(zero) count ‘em 0(zero) games last year. They are in a major rebuilding phase. They too have a brand new, rookie head coach. They don’t have near the offensive talent to surround a QB as Denver does. Their defense is further from respectability than Denver’s is, if you ask me. If Cutler were to land in Detroit, I wouldn’t be surprised that by the time the team has the players around him to even compete for a play off berth, let alone achieve one, that he would be near the end of what ever contract he signs there. Or, the coach would be near the end of his and since they probably wouldn’t have won anything yet with Cutler, their “prized trade acquisition,” they would be going through yet another coaching change.

Second, Cleveland: This team is also in a rebuilding phase. They may very well be closer to a playoff run than the Lions, but not by a lot the way I see it. Again, they have a new coach, one who wasn’t exactly stellar in his first stint as the head man. One who also comes from the New England, Belichick tree. One who may not care anymore for his players than what we perceive Belichick or McDaniels to. One who can’t seem to smile or give a genuine, sportsmanlike hand shake to his counterpart after a game, win or lose(just like Belichick.) They just traded away their best offensive weapon(Winslow), and don’t exactly have a great wealth of talent on that side of the ball – again, that is my opinion. Once again, they may be undergoing a regime change before they are legitimate contenders. Or Cutler may be hollering for a new contract or facing free agency by then.

Third, New York Jets: Here we go again, a brand new, rookie head coach – and a defensive-minded one, mind you. And again, they don’t have an embarrassment of riches on the offensive side of the ball. But with this team, the worst thing for Cutler, someone who has shown that he isn’t exactly fond of the media, (or, at least, isn’t exactly suited, personality-wise, for dealing with the media) is the New York press. There was a big enough deal made of Cutler’s comments about his arm strength in relation to Elway’s, and his verbal push-me-shove-you with Phillip Rivers. Can you imagine how some little comment(and let’s face it, Cutler would inevitably utter something controversial in a press conference or an interview) would be blown out of proportion in New York? Would anyone be surprised if he had a problem with the Jets’s new coach, a defensive-minded coach, and let it be known that he was unhappy? This little feud with McDaniels would seem like nothing more than an argument between a couple of bickering old bitties at a bingo game.

Last, Tampa Bay: Have I said this before? A brand new, rookie head coach. A defensive-minded one, and one who has never even been a coordinator before. He was moved from D-line coach or Linebacker’s coach or something straight to the head spot. They don’t exactly have a lot of great weapons on offense. If they did, Gruden would probably still have his job. But there is another element of being traded to the Bucs(or, as I like to call them, the schmucks) that Cutler should consider. During the pro bowl game back in February of this year, the announcers mentioned that that game, the pro bowl game, was the hardest game Cutler had played in as a pro as far as the heat went – as far as his diabetes went. They said that during a regular game at Mile High he has to check his blood sugar three or four times a game. But during that game in Hawaii, he had to check it ten or more times during the game. The heat apparently affects him. So on top of the young, defensive minded coach and lack of talent surrounding him compared to what he would have in Denver, he would have to not only play, but practice in Florida heat. And he would have to deal with training camp in August in Florida . . . AUGUST IN FLORIDA . . . That might not be a good thing for him. Physically he may be okay, but I doubt he would enjoy it.

I guess my point is that the grass isn’t always greener in another stadium. Does he really think that if he goes to another team that he would never again encounter an owner or a coach or a player or a reporter who would do or say something that he didn’t like? No one would ever again be disingenuous with him? What kind of fairy land does he think he’s living in? No situation is perfect. Do we as blue collar working schmoes quit our jobs every time our boss is cranky or acts as though he doesn’t appreciate us or BELIEVE in us? No, we don’t. Because we know that if we went to another job we would still have days when we weren’t happy or BELIEVED IN with that company and that boss as well. In fact, the new job, the new company, the new boss, may be even worse. So we grit our teeth and deal with it.

Unless, of course, we are treated in a way that is truly unacceptable. Does anyone think that Cutler was treated in a way that was unacceptable considering that he is in a business and a league that saw JOE MONTANA let go in favor of a guy who hadn’t exactly proven himself yet when Joe himself HAD proven what he could do? After what Brett Favre did for the Packers over the years, should they have let him come back and be the starter especially when he had taken them to the championship game the previous year and was their best chance to repeat that feat? Yes. But did they? No. Right or wrong, they didn’t. Cutler has only played in two and a half seasons worth of games, has lost more of them than he has won, and none of them were playoff games. He had a chance at the playoffs this past season, and couldn’t score more than ten points against the BILLS at home. That isn’t the fault of the defense. That is the offense that struggled as it did many times this year. And Cutler, like it or not, was a part of that offensive struggling. Granted, the running game was sporadic at best and Brandon Marshal dropped a lot of passes all year. And, to be fair, Cutler will only get better. He is only 25 and, as I said, has only two and a half seasons worth of games under his belt. That all being said, though, IS he truly UN-TRADEABLE? Was he treated in a way that was TRULY unacceptable? Is trading a player, or trying to, TRULY unacceptable?

People have mentioned the similarities between this situation and the one between Elway and Reeves. Well, Pat Bowlen chose player over coach then, because the player had been there for ten years at that point and had taken the team to 3(three) Super Bowls. This time Mr. Bowlen has a brand new coach and a player who has only managed to score ten points in the closest thing to a playoff game he’s been in. The player has no leverage this time. The coach does because it’s too late to let him go and hire a whole new staff this close to the draft. Criticize Pat Bowlen if you will, but would you rather have Al Davis or Jerry Jones? Owners that become more of a distraction to the team due to their “hands-on-way-too-tightly” approach? Granted, Mr. Bowlen could do a little more, but he is who he is, and I am just thankful who what he is isn’t Al Davis.

Now I know I have only discussed four teams out of a rumored ten that have supposedly contacted the Broncos regarding Cutler. There may well be one in the other six that would be a perfect fit for him. But there is an old saying that goes, “Be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it.” Well, he has requested a trade. He wants out. For what ever reason. Right, wrong, or indifferent. So he might get his wish. He might just end up wishing he was back in Denver.

How many quarterbacks can you name that requested a trade and were granted their wish and ended up being successful with their new team? And I don’t mean how many had good stats with their new team or maybe even made the playoffs. I’m talking Super Bowls. How many? Remember that teams that would be willing to give up something for a disgruntled quarterback, regardless of how talented he may be, are usually teams that are in desperate need of one. They usually don’t have all the other parts in place yet either. They are usually rebuilding. The reason they usually have high draft picks to give up to afford someone like Cutler, is because they have finished at the bottom of the rankings for a while.

So, whether you are in the right doesn’t matter, Jay. You should still be careful what you wish for . . . because it might just come true.

Oh, and Mr. McDaniels, after saying all this I still have to ask you, WHAT THE HECK WERE YOU THINKING!?!
