Allen Looking for Scoring Defense

July 11th, 2011 - 11:14am by Gray Caldwell

Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen has made it clear he expects his group to be “feared” on the football field.

One way to do that is through punishing hits. The other is to make opposing offenses worried they could commit a turnover at any time.

“It’s all about scoring defense,” Allen told Broncos TV. “First and foremost, you’ve got to be able to take the ball away from the offense. Secondly, you’ve got to be great playing in the red zone. Thirdly, if you can get off the field on third down, those are the things that allow you to be a really great defense. If you can do those three things then you’re going to be pretty good.”

With all the planning that has been done during the offseason, Allen said he’s itching to put the schemes into action.

“I think I’ve been antsy from the very first day,” he said. “I think what we love to do as coaches and players, we want to be out on the field and playing the game of football. That’s what we signed up for. That’s our passion. That’s what we love. I’m ready to start coaching players instead of coaching coaches.”

Hopefully we’ll see something to that affect on the field this season.

I’m ready to start watching football instead of watching people thinking about playing football.

Great philosophy. Easier said then done though, so here’s to hoping he can get us there! We’re heading in the right direction with a great draft for our defense.

Very true, but there is still a lot of work to be done to improve the defense from what it was last year. One big factor is who is going in as QB. The quiet one that knows nothing of motivation or the one that is compelled to motivate both the offense as well as the defense. They also need more beef on the defensive line to make his scenario work I believe.

  4. seweatherman1 says:

Actually, first and foremost they all need to get their heads out of their backsides and get this CBA done or there won’t be anything to watch this season! (other than the attorneys quibble)

There talking 7-10 days the deal should be done if they can get by the one big hang-up left, the length of rookie contracts. Rookie wage scale will be half of what it was last year but they didn’t say how many picks the scale will be directly affecting.

  8. BeastFromEast92 says:

    Hey guys anybody watching ESPN???
I saw it scrolling across the bottom that they are close to a new CBA,could be 7-10 days, word is the only thing that could cause a problem is the Rookie wage scale.Trying to get it done by July 21st.
They said if they signed a new CBA FA could start as soon as a week later!
The only preseason game missed would be the Hall of Fame game!

I know Bay posting some of the same things earlier this morning, but just updating what I saw.

Peyton says this Allen guy is the real thing and he did whatever he could to keep him with the Saints, so I think that bodes well for us since Peyton knows what he is doing.

But at this point this talk seems hollow since we are here without any football activities to digest whatsoever, about that here are some of the latest comments:

One member of the players’ negotiating team who has been a constant presence at the table said that players feel they have made significant concessions and overtures “that have not been reciprocated.”

He stated that negotiations Wednesday and Thursday will be the most telling days on whether an agreement indeed will be finalized within the July 21 time frame because “we’ve basically reached the limits of compromise.”

The same source added that the players have agreed to cut rookie compensation in half but won’t agree to a deal that does not allow for the rookie class to become free agents at the end of four years.

Rookie pay cut in half, now I like that!!!

And if it’s down to the owners not wanting to allow rookies to be UFAs after 4 years, then it’s a bit of a stretch from the owners since vet players would become UFAs after 4 years of service to a team, maybe the compromise there would be that teams could have the first right of refusal on 4 year rookies, hence these performing rookies will be highly compensated then by their own team and rightly so. It’s probably not as clear cut as that player states it because that doesn’t seem like that tough a negotiating point there. Of course they are still arguing the first right of refusal/ transiton tags to retain top players but in the case of the rookies it would make total sense. Too much sense? LOL.

    HAHA,imready beat me to it.

  11. BeastFromEast92 says:

Rookie pay cut in half sounds good to me….Git-R-Done!!!!!!!!!!!!

  12. baylinorcrush says:

Since we are the 11th, 7-10 days takes us exactly to the 21st, the now famed “hard’ deadline, so no big late changes in the plan…

  13. henryac says:

I think the other thing the players are trying to prevent is the wage scale going past Pick 8 or 9. Seems dumb to me since I surely wouldn’t pay the first pick after the limit more money than the last pick under the limit! If they limit the scale to the first 8 picks, guess what, #9 is not going to make as much as #8! Talk about semantics! The other hang-up I heard about is how to fund the retired players programs. For some reason, 50-50 between the players and owners didn’t seem like a good idea to the players. Say What? Give up some of the money now, guys, for you too, one day, will be retired!! Looks like they are finally getting down to the minutia so they can get this done,

  14. imready says:

Hey BFE, if you weren’t so long winded you would have beat me! LOL I don’t care what you say Bay, this sparked a little excitement in my football blood. No matter how pissed off I am about this whole work stoppage (is that really a word?) ,the thought of football resuming excites me. Guess the players and owners know they got us just where they want us, by the family jewels. LOL I want to see what we got and what we are going to do and it’s getting closer to being back to the NFL as usual. I hope none of us forget that these people are milking us for every penny they can get and we deserve to be treated with respect or we’ll pull the plug. If we don’t watch , if we do go to the game and if we don’t buy merchandise the got nothing. We got them right they want us. LOL

  15. baylinorcrush says:

You want excitment, go on the next blog, LOL.

  16. baylinorcrush says:

And you guys no nothing about long winded, hahaha.

  17. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I like Allen. When I heard we got him as a DC was excited. Young guy that was spoken very highly of by Payton. Heck I am already hoping if he works out as our DC, he can be our next HC. After all he is young and has time to grow and learn. Only if he succeeds as a DC. He has already done the positional coaching. Only way left to move is up. I really hope what he is trying to implement sticks. I also think he is the DC we have been waiting for (minus Nolan who was pretty darn good). After all, the superbowl year, their D was the D with the most TD’s. Mainly off interceptions and I believe he was the secondary coach. With a pass rush this year, I believe it is possible. Wish Allen the best. TRB out…

PS: They have been saying they are close to a CBA for so long now. 1 issue left, hours of convo, and they still gonna need 10 more days? wateva. Then again, as long as they figure this out and we dont have to deal with it for another 10 years or whatever….

  18. strandoftds says:

I said a day or so ago that the 21st of July would be the latest for an ideal preseason to get started on time. But as far as camp thats cutting it to close, dang.

  19. imready says:

It’s a lot safer getting excited about cheerleaders in bathing suits than it is being optomistic about them getting a deal done. Blondes were always tough for me as I was naturally more blonde than most of them . I think they were jealous. Brunette’s have been the mainstay for me but my current is a redhead, What did Bruce Springstein say about redheads? Something like “it takes a redheaded woman to get a dirty job done”. He would know, being married to a redhead himself.

  20. BeastFromEast92 says:

Red on the head, means fire in the Hole!!!!!!!!!HAHA!

  21. baylinorcrush says:

    Naughty, naughty boys, LOL.

  22. imready says:

Boys will be boys, redheads will be redheads! LOL
