Last weekend, the Broncos made a change at quarterback.
No, it didn’t have anything to do with Kyle Orton, the signal-caller behind the NFL’s No. 1 passing offense, but rather the two players behind him.
After serving as the inactive emergency quarterback for the first two games, Brady Quinn traded places with Tim Tebow and suited up as the backup quarterback against Indianapolis last Sunday.
Head Coach Josh McDaniels addressed the status of the No. 2 quarterback position on Monday.
“It’s a competitive situation,” McDaniels said. “I think we’re just going to make the best decision on a week-to-week basis.”
The coach said the decision will stem from his staff’s evaluation of both players in practice and how well each quarterback’s skill set takes advantage of the upcoming opponent’s defense.
“We considered the game plan, what (the quarterbacks) do well, what the other team does and how that fits their style,” McDaniels said.
In Week 1 at Jacksonville, the team unveiled a formation with Tebow at quarterback and Orton shifted over to wide receiver, and Tebow gained two yards on two carries. Denver listed the rookie as the backup against Seattle the following week, but he didn’t see the field.
When the Colts came to town, Quinn got the call to ready himself if anything happened to Orton, and Tebow took his place as the No. 3 QB.
“It was a situation where we felt more comfortable with that based on the game plan,” McDaniels said. “(We) didn’t have anything in (the game plan) relative to Tim being in the game and playing a role in it, and we’ll try to do that the best we can each week.”
On Wednesday, Quinn told the media he didn’t know if he did anything differently to step up the depth chart, but he hopes he can repeat it in practice before the team travels to Tennessee.
“(I’ll) probably just do whatever I did last week, still try to figure that out and then do it again this week,” he said.
Tebow said he plans to do what he’s always done.
“I think I try to approach it the same every week,” he said. “That’s to be ready for anything, that’s knowing what my role is, trying to prepare and learn the game plan as best I can.”
Safety Brian Dawkins (ankle), fullback Spencer Larsen (ankle), wide receiver Brandon Lloyd (non-injury), running back Knowshon Moreno (hamstring) and linebacker Wesley Woodyard (hamstring) did not practice on Wednesday. Cornerback Andre’ Goodman (quadricep) and offensive lineman Ryan Harris (ankle) were limited in practice.
For the Titans, defensive tackle Tony Brown (knee), defensive end Jacob Ford (knee) and cornerback Jason McCourty (forearm) did not practice.

The injury report doesn’t look all that bad this week, hopefully Dawkins and Larsen are minor sprains, Moreno and Woodyard are always out with their hammys anyway, Lloyd it’s not an injury and Goodman and Harris are practicing some. Not bad.
A pic shows Maroney cuts upfield, so he CAN go upfield, good to know, LOL.
Personally I’d like to see what Andre Brown can do, we know what all the others can do.
Brown, 6′, 224 lbs, closest thing we got to a power back, I’m intrigued, that is my wish for the week, that he gets some carries Sunday.
Certainly couldn’t hurt in the running game department.
I`m so confused. Should`nt Quinn be cut by now. Two QB`s and a extra roster spot. I just don`t understand.
So has anybody heard anything on Price yet? Has he been claimed by any team?
This is what Mike Florio says about it:
The Baltimore Ravens have dumped veteran defensive lineman Trevor Pryce. Per a league source, the Ravens made the move in order to create a roster spot for safety Ken Hamlin, who was cut earlier this month. Pryce could return to the team as soon as next week.
My goodness! not even the guys on the team don’t know why they are getting moved up and down the depth chart…
As the apple cart turns…. Like sands through the hour glass, so are the days of our team…
Does anybody know If DMT is hurt? he’s not on the injury report but I thought he hurt hisarm or hand last Sunday?
I hope he’s okay..
OC, it turned out that it was like his funny bone or something in his elbow, they were going to x-ray but then the pain disappeared, he is fine.
I like the idea of signing Pryce. He played well for us before. Hopefully he could add a little boost to the D-line.
14 years playing DE in the NFL is all I’ll say about that. What’s left?
I feel losing to the colts was good for our team and more because this game could have been won. That’s my opinion and that’s only if they can fix their redzone problem. But the running game must improve maybe a DE for a HB that will give you all the power you need and no dancing at the line of scrimmage. That can even give us the option to pass that will be the only way our running game will get respect. Loll!!! how sad is that. But I believe our broncos can fix this their is alot of football left.
I apologize to all the Bronco County! I do not like bringing up the past because we should dwell in the present!! But I still do not understand why or what happened between McD and Payton Hillis. I mean he is a team player. He is smart, and physical!! And kicking ass with the Browns with 220 yards and yes 3 TD’s!! I am watching our former team “Players” perform across the league. Ok I’m done just venting!!
GO BRONCOS
FTR
You not alone FTR, ive pointed out all of our ex broncos doing well. I need to stop paying attention to what they do or i will go crazy. Even INT king cutler is not looking so bad. But the losses that still keep me up at night are Marshall, Hillis and Sheffler (since we STILL dont have a recieving TE) and all of them did it big last sunday. At least we are still productive in the passing game, the one i guess u could say is the most needed is hillis. Dunno what happened between McD and Hillis, he fumbled like twice at the begining of last season, but one of them was on KR. Who the hell puts a powerback to return kicks. Sure there were questions at QB but a powerback was definitely needed.
I think if he knew he would be able to get Tebow not to mention a first round WR as well, he never woulda made the trade. I still believe that based on how things go this year, if tebow is looking ready or even quinn, orton will be traded because his value is the highest and after this season that is looking to be a career season, he will even be more valuable as a trading chip IMO. Just speculation…..
FTR, actually Hillis has now I believe 373 yards counting receiving.
Sorry, 306 yds.
i dont like the idea of this rotating backup qb thing that mcd has going on here. im not going to lie, i was on his band wagon last year, but i have officially jumped off of that. just give a guy a spot on the roster and keep him there unless someone truly earns it. but u cant move people up and down based on limited practice reps
Go Redskins
Haha bay I was going to say the same thing! re; Maroney… I dont know how i feel about this, I hope Tebow is still NFL material!
I take it this Olap character is a skins fan?
TRB, your hypothesis has some merit. The only constant with McD is he likes to trade. Players, Picks, Coaches, Schemes, Philosophies, Depth Chart. I would hate to have dinner with him. He would probably trade 3 desserts for a side dish. Or a steak for two appetizers. My plate for his. Then take that and trade it for two more desserts.
Haha, oops,
Get Healthy, GO BRONCOS 2K10! Toughen up in Tennessee
We need our secondary at it’s best back!! And damn we miss you DOOM!!!
Absolutely our running game has to improve, but do not worry broncos country, last game our fullback was injured and could not lead the way for our other tailbacks for the whole game. Now we recovered our #1 back and he has to show if he’s a important piece of the puzzle for this team to be successful.
Have faith Broncos Country!
Olap2009 is really RYAN TORAIN!!! IT MUST BE!!!!! Shanny signed him a few games ago and now he is trolling on our page cuz he misses us
Hillis 3 TD, but 2 fumbles. That’s why he was let go. McD just didn’t care for his fumbleitis. I suspect that it was more common that appropriate during practice than he cared to see. Sure would like to see a back with his power though.
It seems as if the Trevor thing can be put to rest:
The Ravens released ex-Broncos defensive lineman Trevor Pryce. McDaniels said he likes the rotation up front and won’t look at Pryce right now.
sndvl, loved your dinner table analogy.
And while I think about it, you know how easily McD reverses his suit about just almost everything? Against the Colts in ran exclusively with the O line executing the zone blocking scheme, the one that we used to run exclusively here under Shanny and that McD made of priority of switching into a power blocking scheme when he got here. The only constant in McD so far has been Orton, other than that inconsistency is the only constant here. Maybe it’s just all to keep the opposition guessing, it’s working on me, problem it’s probably keeping our players guessing too.
WHAT IS OUR IDENDITY? I venture to guess I won’t get too many answers here, but I’d sure like to hear some. Other than we are a passing team 20′s to 20′s I really don’t know who we are other than maybe the Patriots minus Brady, Belicheck and a killer front 7 on D. Help me out guys what is our identity?
Could it be:
A. We have none because McD hasn’t figured it out yet.
B. We don’t have any because McD keeps changing most everything as soon as difficulties arise.
C. We don’t know because McD may have one, but he hasn’t shown the leadership required to turn the men into the players he needs them to be to be able to fullfil that identity.
D. All of the above.
E. McD doesn’t care to have one since he believes the game plan should be completely different for every opponent.
F. We don’t have one because just like you and me, the players are so confused, they don’t know what they are.
Ok, that was fun, I could of kept going but you probably don’t have as much fun with it as I do and I can’t blame you, you had to be there, LOL.
well, i dont know what to say! ive been upset enough with the broncos (more specifically their coach) to stay away from the blog this week. im thinking of taking up a new hobby this football season so i dont have to dwell on the broncos! terrible play calling last week, and im sure it has been mentioned about a billion times these last few days. our identity bay? we are a one sided offense who is unable to run the football, but has a very solid passing attack! so, that being said, why did we run the ball 7 out of 8 times on the goal line last weekend only to come up with a whopping ZERO POINTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!11
sorry my fingers went into a rage and accidentally hit the enter button. i am now officially on board with the power back need that bay and others have been screaming for all off season. i admit i thought our backs would be fine as long as our line played well. i was wrong!! REALLY wrong. i havent seen even a glimpse of a back that has the ability to break one, or get the tough yards. both moreno and maroney need to trade out their tap shoes and tutus for cleats and a heart! does no one know how to teach a back to hit a hole? the dance around back there waiting for something big to open up.. hello…. this is the NFL. all you get are creases! hit em hard and fast! one cut and go! WTF!!! ok, im getting angry again, need to get off here for a while! bad for my state of mind.
Keep on buckin broncos
THE BATTLE IS WON IN THE TRENCHES
ps… we should have won the last game! we out played them in every facet but one… the RZ.
Ok, on a more serious note, I just took a look at why the Titans are 2-1 so far, because it’s getting time to make score predictions and so far bloggers have been leary to do so with only 4 of them.
The Titans beat the Raiders 38-13 in week 1. Simple answers there, 202 yards on the ground, and, well, it’s the Raiders.
They lost 11-19 to the Steelers in week 2. The key there was as big as the nose on my face, the Steelers stopped the run allowing only 46 yards.
They won their last game against the Giants 29-10. A little more complex there, but still things worthy to consider. Eerily like us last week, Eli Manning had big numbers, 34 of 48 for 386 yds but no TD and 2 INT, and they even added 107 yds on the ground, way more than our 67 yd per game average I believe so far this year. And Young was only 10 of 16 for 118 yds, with the key there being the running game for the second time with 161 yds.
So, real simple, you stop their running game, it seems you come out of there with a win, of course with Chris Johnson it seems so trivial, but there is nothing like in depth. The other thing that sticks out, the Titans are built like the Colts, probably a division thing, they let you walk up and down the field all day, like Eli Manning did, yet they don’t let you get in the end zone, only 10 points by the Giants. Sounds familiar?
Well there we go for round 2 of the same, and hopefully McD will have learned something from round one. This game will tell me a whole bunch about how McD can get ready for a team that everyone knows what they are bringing to the table, it’s pretty black and white there, stop the run, take advantage of your red zone opportunities and don’t turn it over, because of course we know we can’t run the ball, so scratch that even so it would be helpful.
So here you go, you can make your score predictions now, it should be easy, LOL.
“both moreno and maroney need to trade out their tap shoes and tutus for cleats and a heart.”
Thanks for the laugh ray, loved it.
Titans 27 Broncos 17
I really believe that the backs we have are all for show backs, I mean they have a gap in front of them that would give them 3 or 4 yards, we can all see it, they flat ignore it because they want more, they stupidly think that they can dance their way around one of the tackles and brake a big one. How little do they know!!!
And yeah I believe that would fall back on McD and Co., how in the world you cannot teach a back that with 3.5 yards per carry all day, you end up with nothing but first downs!?!?! It’s so elementary, it’s like failing pre-school. Whatever, it must be more difficult than it looks is all I can say in the coaches and backs defense. Trying to be nice here, anyone noticed? LOL.
break a big one, haha.
thats what it looks like to me also bay. take what the D gives ya. 3.5 yds all day sounds great to me! 3.5 yds when you are on the 2 yd line is …. you got it. a TD.. something we have struggled to get thus far. lol i know its a lot harder to score on the goal line. especially without someone that can really pound the football in there! i feel like if we are going to be a passing team, i mean if thats going to be our strength, then why not play to that? double tight end set with our 2 biggest WR on the wings and let orton throw it! or how bout those screen plays McD is so high on? ANYTHING is better than watching our backs go down at the line of scrimage over and over again! well, i guess an INT is worse! course if you dont come away with any points then i guess it doesnt matter either way! im on the big back train now! that better be on of our main areas of concern in the next off season! of course we have lendale and i think he would have been a HUGE help last sunday! a game changer at the goal line perhaps! but wish in one hand and $#^! in the other and see which one fills up faster!
I just wished Lendale White didn’t get hurt,I really think he has a lot left in his tank,he’s only 25,with a lot of years left.I was looking forward to seeing him tear it up this year.I get tired of bashing McD for his dumb moves and playcalling,so if he’d stop I would stop,LOL.I however do think our runD has been a lot better this year giving up 94 yds a game,BTW the Titans are giving up 116 yds a game,so c’mon McD PLEASE call some running plays that work,IF we can hold CJ under 130 I think we win 20-17.
Damn glad to hear Goody is practicing,we need him and Harris badly.
IF we can score in the redzone,I think we surprise a lot of Bronco skeptics, and beat the Titans.20-17.
If you’re keeping count that’s 2 BIG IFs.
As always bay with on the money comments and analysis very entertaining and easy to agree with.
IMO the Seattle win, a good one no doubt, felt at times more of a “phew that was close” win and the loss to the colts also felt like “rats that was close” loss. In neither of those games was a carefully elaborated and executed game plan evident. Perhaps credit to our defense in the first one and blame on the running game in the latter.
The season is young and far from over. So is the race for the division. But if we want to have a chance at anything significant this year we have to be able to see a game plan that is sane, executed well and a team, ANY team dominated.
Get healthy, keep playing, have fun.
GO BRONCOS!
rayjr26…we both agree on Lendale White,he would’ve helped us immensly,IMO.
I will give Wink a Mile High Salute for putting a Safety on Clark, and double teaming him at times, thats smarter than what Nolan did,he torched us last year,I guess I’m trying to say after all the turmoil we’ve been thru this young season,at least Wink at DC is looking great so far, just wished we had better Linebacker play from everyone except DJ.I wished we had somebody like Wilson,Romo,Meck,Hell even Croel or Mobley,I loved watching those guys blowing people up,we need some BIG HITTERS at the LB position.Last year we passed on Orakpo,Cushings, and Matthews,DAMN.
@BFE… i couldnt agree more!! ive been saying for about 2 years now that we really need a physical presence at the MLB position! we havent had anything like that since Wilson got hurt! sad….
Has anyone noticed that Brian dawkins seems to have really lost a step this year? I see him consistently blowing coverages and missing tackles. And now injuries. I’m not sure if he’ll be our starting safety be the end of the year.
I was the moron who picked the Seahawks in week two. I am firmly and permanently stuck on the wall-of-shame. However, I have a feeling about this season’s Broncos I’ve never felt before. I just don’t care as much. This is not a team I get excited about anymore. This is not a team with whom I live and die. The rest of my week was, until this season, always predicated on how these boys did on Sunday or Monday. A win on Sunday and I could proceed with my life with a smile on my face. A loss, and I had to buy a new television and do some sheetrock repair. Maybe even call in sick on Monday. This team gives me no feeling like that. I just cannot find the passion for this version of my lifelong favorite sports team. If they win, I’m relieved. If they lose, I saw that coming. No extreme highs…and no wallowing depths.
Sorry about the on-line soul-searching. My therapist is out this week.
Tennessee 20………..Denver 17
Yeah, noticed that about Dawkins, wrote it up in my good bad ugly piece this week, specially in coverage, he has trouble keeping up with the play, no surprise to me, in my life everything physically wise started going downhill at age 37, that was the only reason Elway retired at 37, his body just couldn’t do it anymore, it’s the same for 90 % of athletes, that’s the time line.
About our LB’s, in total agreement, been trying to make that point just seeing how many great LB’s are on the Steeler team alone, 4 guys there are better than anyone of ours, even so DJ has been ok over the years I definitely wouldn’t put him in the class of Wilson, we have to go way back for great LB’s before Wilson: Tom Jackson, Gradishar, Mecklenburg, Fletcher and Romanowski. I would put DJ somewhere in the neiborhood of Mobley, great potential but never fully achieved.
Anyhow, what’s up with that, our LB’s are definitely the weak point of our D now, last year it was the D line, but thanks to free agency, they are seemingly getting of the schnide, but we didn’t adress LB’s in early FA or the draft, so here we are with ok to crappy LB’s. Overall our front 7 still leaves to be desired and I’m real concern over Chris Johnson.
my guess is 38-20 Broncos, I think our offense gets the ball in the endzone this week and our D contains CJ for most of the time.
So when will “No Show” Moreno be back, anyone know how bad he’s hurt?
APATHY, the worse possible feeling, I hear you buddy, somehow McD makes it very difficult to care for what he does considering what he does with our players. I’m growing concerned over that apathy permeating the locker room, it’s not a far stretch from going all out to playing for a paycheck, if you don’t buy what the coach does, eventually you act up like Marsghall and Scheffler did and you get traded and then you enjoy life again, that scenario has already played out last year, it doesn’t seem that much different this year, no one has gotten there yet, but it’s early, anything is possible, scary thoughts.
If you place score predictions often, eventually you will end up on the wall of shame, I did last year once and I hated it, but it shows any given Sunday is alive. That’s what I’m going for this Sunday for the second week in a row, and it might be the same for a couple weeks after that, repeating my “any given sunday” mantra over and over and over, until we get it right.
Moreno is playing musical chairs with his hammies, they say the left one hurt now is not as bad as the right one was, either way, he will be limited by these injuries throughout the season at some level is my guess, hammies are a lingering thing, they don’t really fully recover unless you really sit out for multiple weeks, I think it was Bailey who had that problem one year and he was never the same all year long after that.
I want to see Brown run the rock (sorry for the repeat for those who take exception), he is our biggets back now at 6′ 224 I think and I wanna see what he’s got since I don’t like to see what we’ve got, I don’t think that’s too much to ask, right?
BROWN, BROWN, BROWN! Bring it on!!
@ bay… where’s the reverse psychology??
SIT BROWN, SIT BROWN… PLAY MARONEY, PLAY MARONEY
… doing what i can to help the team!
Keep on buckin broncos
