2011 Training Camp – Day 8: P.M. Blog

August 4th, 2011 - 7:04pm by Gray Caldwell

The Broncos’ Thursday afternoon practice brought out the rain and several additions to the list of participants.

Some familiar faces and some new acquisitions took part in their first practice of training camp thanks to the official start of the league year with a large crowd on hand despite the rain and cooler temperatures at Dove Valley.

NFL Referee Bill Leavy and his crew were on the field as well after giving a presentation to the club on rule changes earlier this afternoon.

ROLL CALL
Familiar faces safety Brian Dawkins, linebacker Wesley Woodyard, kicker Matt Prater and defensive linemen Marcus Thomas and Ryan McBean were finally able to fully participate in practice after days of watching from the sidelines.

Dawkins immediately replaced rookie Quinton Carter on the first-team defense and with D.J. Williams still out due to injury, Woodyard stepped into the first-team for rookie Mike Mohamed. Thomas rotated in for second-team snaps.

The long list of free agent signings — which includes running back Willis McGahee, wide receiver David Anderson, tight ends Daniel Fells and Dante Rosario, and defensive linemen Ty Warren and Derrick Harvey also got a chance to practice with their new team for the first time.

McGahee rotated with Knowshon Moreno for first team snaps, with Moreno still seeing the majority of the carries.

Fells saw extensive first-team action, while Rosario and Anderson worked their way into the second-team offense.

Warren and Harvey were placed on the second-team defensive line, with Elvis Dumervil, Kevin Vickerson, Brodrick Bunkley and Robert Ayers rounding out the first-team once again this afternoon.

LenDale White, Brandon Bing and Louis Leonard did not practice.

MUSIC TO THEIR EARS
For the first time all camp, the team was treated to some music during the team stretch.

“Atomic Dog” by George Clinton, “Hey Ya!” by Outkast and “Where the Streets Have No Name” by U2 were played in that order to the delight of those in attendance.

PLAYMAKERS

  • McGahee’s first run got the crowd going as he ran left, made a quick cut and found a nice hole for a big gain. The new Broncos running back got a round of cheers as he trotted back to the huddle.
  • Quarterback Tim Tebow displayed his running ability often during the session, taking some designed runs for big yardage and even running an option out of the shotgun with Moreno trailing behind him for the pitch.
  • Fells showed off some athleticism for a big tight end, tracking down a ball thrown by Kyle Orton and sliding across the grass to make the catch and keep the ball from touching the ground.
  • Orton fired a bullet across the middle during a 7-on-7 drill to Eddie Royal, who made a sure-handed catch in traffic. Safety Rahim Moore was in position to make a big hit on the receiver, but he was able to pull up at the last second.
  • Brady Quinn hooked up with wide receiver Eron Riley on a deep post, which got the offensive sideline excited, including the coaches, who applauded Riley’s precise route.
  • One of the biggest hits of the practice came from linebacker Joe Mays, who lined up Moreno and popped the running back at the line of scrimmage for a minimal gain. Mays’ defensive teammates were riled up after that.
  • GOAL LINE GETS DEFENSIVE
Orton found Dan Gronkowski wide open in the corner of the end zone on a play-action toss during the first play of the goal-line session, but that was the only score the offense would record.

The defense stepped up and stopped the offense on five straight plays from inside the 5-yard line, keeping the ball out of the end zone. Woodyard and Nate Irving both had nice plays against the run — especially Irving, who broke free and stopped Mario Fannin for a loss.

A play-action attempt from Quinn on the offense’s fifth goal line play failed to fool the defense as Vickerson got to the quarterback for a sack.

    QUICK HITS

  • At the start of practice, the defensive players suiting up for their first practice of camp were treated to 20 up-downs as their teammates watched and counted out the repetitions. Warren was one of the participants in the “initiation,” as he put it. “It just about killed me,” he laughed.
  • Dawkins was clearly excited to be back out there practicing with his teammates. The veteran was flying through drills and was seen chest bumping as he walked out onto the field. During warmups, he was smiling and dancing to the music.
  • Former Broncos safety John Lynch took in practice and caught up with some old friends. Lynch spent time with Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway and had a long conversation on the sideline with Champ Bailey.
  • Live placekicking took place for the first time all training camp as Matt Prater took part in some drills throughout the session.
  • Some new drills were introduced as the defensive linemen worked with a JUGS machine to practice knocking down passes, and the offensive line worked on keeping their pad level down by stepping forward and crouching under a set of bars.
  • The quarterbacks were spotted working on their deep ball accuracy as each one took turns hauling 40-yard passes to the back corner of the end zone.
  • The team will be back on the field tomorrow afternoon from 2:20 to 5 p.m. in a session free and open to the public.

Hey 3rdgen did make a valid point earlier with the rebuilding. I couldn’t help but to notice the common factor in all the teams that the QB was young and the GM/HC built the team around that young QB.

    4. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Thats the point Mikey, makes no sense to build aroudn a guy u probably wont sign longer and will cut at the end of the year. Thats just 1 less year chemistry coulda been built with someone else, but im over it lol. Sometimes, just gotta say eff it to stuff you can’t control lol … and on the slim chance this is the right choice … more power to EFX …

    5. killerkod says:

Just wait and see………..Orton will get hurt, followed by Tebow in the preseason, only to bring in Quinn to dominate the league and lead the Broncos to the Super Bowl. Quinn will shock the league and prove he isn’t the bust everyone thinks he is……….

      LOL

Killer, are we talking about the most unlikely scenarios? haha

    8. killerkod says:

I think Elway would get back out there before letting Fox give the ball to Quinn!! haha

    9. 1ArabianKnight says:

They say you don’t let the fans decide your program and scheme as coaches. I say, who do you think sees the how all other players respond like the eye in the sky? We do.

We’ve seen this pattern before. A decent QB, that can move the ball, hands down no doubt about it, but can not understand the game enough to know sometimes you have to create your own audible to gain the sole edge of Victory even a Championship.

And The Sheer Will to pull it off! Like some of the Greats -(S.Young, Manning, Favre, Montana, Aikman, Brady, and of course Elway)!!

He Who is Destined, shall inherit this this great team. While all the focus is on QB, pay attention to the assembly of host surrounding the QB! We have got some of the Best Talent (under the radar) i believe this franchise has seen since its glory days!

      In my Humble Opinion:

Orton looks great, tall, full of stature, a man in charge of warriors and appearing to “fit the look”. Kind of like King Saul. Yet the throne was also destined for the one after him, David.

Orton doesn’t appear to have the courage in himself when he has to rely solely on himself in certain game situations. Those “situations” will be used by every team who think they have figured us out, as there primary attack against Ortons Style of tall, slow and barely mobile with no athleticism. But its not his skillset, its his Desire.

Orton reminds me of another tall lanky dorky looking QB -Elway (that’s right i said it)

But when John did that Helicopter, it did not matter how dorky, lanky or type of tall QB he appeared, He Willed Us To Victory! And I’m not just talking about the Organization

I Mean the People who Believed in Mile Highs Miracles which seem to have been Spiritually leading (Infamous Mile High SPIRIT) a lot of Weird Comebacks?

My point is this: It’s not Orton’s Skills that the People doubt..it is His Desire than can put us deep into the playoffs (regardless of a good defense), in any season (re-building or not) that we question.

I say get rid of Quinn in a surprise trade for Asante Samuel (in case we can’t get Cox out of the barn and into some “how to not screw up in dating” counseling, (which I would be glad to provide for a donation to my Youth Non-Profit ) but the rest of the teams acquisitions are solid. GREAT JOB!

      TO: Pat Bowlen and EFX

Already bored of this, just want to see some football, I’ll even take the pre-season games, just tired of the drama it’s like a soap opera we should call it The Bold and the Broncos or The days of our Quarterbacks! any other good suggestions?

    11. baylinorcrush says:

Tall lanky dorky Elway, I have absolutely zero idea what Elway you are talking about, ours was not that tall, definitely not lanky at all and a dork doesn’t go to 5 SBs and wins two, that is just the weirdest comparaison I have ever heard of between Orton and Elway, where you 8 year old in 1998?

    12. baylinorcrush says:

      were you

    14. O&BinCostaRica says:

If you are fan enough to post here, I respect your opinion as a fellow Broncos fan. I know for a fact that you love the same team even though you might see things differently within it. Respect, however does not mean agreeing…. Orton is NOTHING like Elway… in no way, shape, form, abilities, intensity, nothing. Sorry… just imho.

    15. ORANGEnBLUE_AZ says:

Enough with the QB’s, i think broncos brass will put the best qb out there whether it b orton, tebow or quinn.. As long it is as thier say it is an open and fair competition..

As for our defence our d line looked pretty good and Von is everything n more than i thought. Our secondary looks awesome with obviously bailey n dawk but moore lookin impressive and goodman lookin healthy!

Love what were doin with two n three tight end sets n saw some sets with willis m. and moreno on field at same time. running game lookin pwerful n solid havent seen since we had prenial 1000 yrd rushers. Julius Thomas seriously is a beast n looks like he could make a run for off. rookie of the year n maybe lead TE in Touchdowns. Wideouts lookin good with royal healthy, b loyd and decker. mark dell is tearin it up as well n so is fannin.

anyway just my point on some things!

Anyone know whats going on with DJ Will i know he is out but with what and for how long??

    16. orangecrushTD says:

I would have to agree. Comparing Orton to Elway is kind of a diss to Elway. I feel so bad for Tebow tho. The poor guy kind of got screwed over at this point and is just hate on by everybody no matter what he accomplishes. I want Tebow to start so he can shut these critics up. Especially to make Hoge look like an idiot so that he gets fired and works McDonald’s drive through for the remaining years of his “i think I am better than everybody at everything,” life.

I hope whatever makes Tebow the player he is, clicks in him tomorrow at this scrimmage and then a week from now for the 1st preseason game. Poor guy…

    18. pjbronco says:

“Orton reminds me of another tall lanky dorky looking QB -Elway (that’s right i said it)”

Huh? Let’s see…Elway had a rocket arm that could hit receivers in stride, on a rope, fifty yards downfield. Elway could take a broken play and run, oftentimes putting his head down and punishing the guy who was trying to make the tackle. If it was third and fifteen, we were always juiced, know that Elway was going to pull something spectacular out of his hat. Elway spent tons of time in the weight room making himself an incredible physical specimen as his career progressed. Oh, and by this point in his career Elway was taking a team with no running game and a really suspect O-line to the playoffs and the Super Bowl. Still looking for that first similarity between Elway and Orton. Maybe the most ridiculous quote ever.

    19. pjbronco says:

      “knowing,” not “know.”

    20. Elrock says:

There was and will ever only be one John Elway. There have been many and will be many more Kyle Ortons.
