2011 Training Camp – Day 8: A.M. Blog

August 4th, 2011 - 10:51am by Max Henson

The Broncos switched things up Thursday, completing a morning walkthrough before an afternoon practice session later this afternoon.

It was a typical walkthrough for the team as the coaching staff continued to install their playbooks, but one major difference today was the sight of referees on the field.

A crew of NFL officials came out onto the field during the walkthrough and they will deliver a presentation concerning rule changes later in the day to both the team and the media.

Head Coach John Fox spent a good amount of time talking with the officials during the walkthrough and players also spent some time talking with them in between plays.

DECKER’S NEW LOOK
Eric Decker turned some heads as he walked out of the locker room this morning.

The wide receiver came out with a Fu Manchu mustache, which brought out a few smiles from the media members in attendance.

SHAPING THE D-LINE
Many of the numerous additions the Broncos have made along the defensive line have yet to be seen in action, with several players still waiting to take the field for their first practice.

But with Brodrick Bunkley participating, he joined the first-team D-line this morning — taking the place of Louis Leonard — along with fellow defensive tackle Kevin Vickerson and defensive ends Elvis Dumervil and Robert Ayers.

WALKTHROUGH HIGHLIGHT
There isn’t too much to choose from during a walkthrough, but tight end Robert Quinn showed off his hands during the session.

Orton threw a high pass in Quinn’s direction and he stuck out his hand to make a one-handed catch, bringing the ball in.

It looked effortless.

QUOTABLE
Dennis Allen’s voice is always heard loud and clear on the practice field and communication was key for the defensive coordinator during the walkthrough.

“We have got to emphasize our communication,” Allen said repeatedly to his defense. “Don’t assume everyone knows the call.”

SPECIAL TEAMS DRILLS
The special teams units got some work in as they worked on lining up for the snap and pressuring the punter/kicker.

The punt team also practiced while backed up against the end zone to mimic a challenging in-game scenario.

@ Henryac: I understand our record wasn’t the greatest but I can’t give the bulk of the blame to Orton. Our running game stunk, McDaniels tore up the whole Broncos running system that worked for so many years (It’s not like he was any good at running in New England) so that screwed us. He was very pass happy, and if he would have focused on the establishing the run a little bit more the defense gets a little more rest, and our t.o.p is able to increase. Then I haveta give some blame to our defense, where we were pretty much plagued… Elvis was injured, Ayers was injured, Goodman was injured, Dawkins was injured, Hill missed a couple of games, D.J. Williams was suspended, and our D-Line wasn’t deep at all. So we basically got a few first round picks this year with ayers and dumervil coming back with the addition of von miller. So Offenses were exposing some pretty Big weaknesses in our defense, and it’s not like our offense completely left them out to drive, we finished 13th in the league and probably woulda been hire if we hadn’t given up #embarassing. And I’m not saying Kyle Orton is the answer… I’m just saying let’s see what he can do with a running game and a much improved defense before we just put him and the coach on blast.

The bulk of the blame or praise always goes to the HC and QB, whether they deserve it or not.

This has been like the Elway fallout, like we have been so transfixed on finding a new Elway it seems that the coaches, Shanny, McD and Fox, have gone out of their minds trying to replace him. If you remember some of the things Fox has said about Denver it’s that he knows it’s a QB town because of Elway and he is very aware of that, blah blah blah, and they are all freaking out about it. Give it up coaches, you will never find another Elway, I remember Dawk saying that eloquently the other day, actually as much as Elway was our hero, is our hero, he basically has kind of turn out to be a curse to our coaches and subsequently our team. Don’t get too hard on me, just something sndvl pointed to that made me think of it, nothing too deep, just the fact that ever since Elway has left, not one QB has made enough of a mark with his coach to satisfy him, not even Plummer, that’s all I’m saying.

And there will be plenty of time to talk about Shannon Saturday, very happy for you Shannon, looking forward to your brother’s speech at the enshrinement, probably some good brothsr anecdotes in there…

Oh yeah, thanks MANDIEGO! Good to see some old names popping up. Rayjr, Danso, OC (lol), to name a few!
I wonder how the boards at the DP are responding to this news. I used to post occasionally there, but my allegiance is here!!!

A word of advice to the newbies here, if you post links to access Bronco games on the web here you will be warned once (maybe), and then you will be banned. It simply has to do with all the TV rights that make a huge part of every team’s income, Broncos included.

  6. brian_schneider says:

Its kind like presedential elections. Orton has the electoral votes but Tebow has the popular vote.

Just got word from a source they have received enough votes! Let the league year begin

  8. O&BinCostaRica says:

The players have voted to ratify the new CBA!

  9. brian_schneider says:

I don’t think they had much of a choice. Do you know how bad that would look if they didn’t ratify it? There would be some heads rollin’ probably.

I keep hearing how Orton is doing so great in practice, well I don’t care how he’s doing in practice. I want to see how he does in a full game not just three quarters because he folds in the 4th quarter when we need him the most. Actually I don’t want to see him play at all, I’m not a big fan of Orton as you can tell.

  12. baylinorcrush says:

Now some teams are very to the point as what their goals are:

49ers sent out a mass email this afternoon to teams around the league to try and trade safety Taylor Mays.

LMAO, what has that safety done to them, haha.

  13. henryac says:

May. I can agree across the board with your comments. I think the problem is that they know Orton is not the answer or they wouldn’t have tried to trade him to begin with. They don’t want to talk about the question right now for some reason. Not really sure why since bad news never improves with age, but maybe they think if they don’t talk about it, it will go away. If they are trying to replace JE with a JE clone, Good Luck! You can probably count on your fingers the QB’s since he retired who fit that category and that is league wide. That is a wild shot in the dark at best. Maybe they are just trying to make the best of a bad situation.

Quit the hating on Orton. None of you know anything about analyzing a quaterback competition. Just because you can regurgitate a thing or two you have heard on espn over the last two years doesn’t mean anything. Get behind our team and our quarterback. GO ORTON!!!!! At least we have a solid back who wants to play for an organization that has become a mess over the last five years. I’m going to practice on Saturday to cheer on my team and get pumped for the raiders. Let Tebow chill for another year and lets win some home games!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. gooby2shoes says:

we will be good ….fox is getting that frontline right on d and we have good young dbs where the sleepers this year

  18. randy2191 says:

if we can get Mays for a late pick like a 5th or 6th or hopefully a 7th i say we should take him.. he shows great potential .. i still remember the speed from the combine add that speed to a secondary with dawkins, moore, and carter and our safety’s would major upgraded from last season and with mays, moore, and carter all learning from dawkins we would be set at safety for years

  19. s1llyboy310 says:

JUST SIT TEBOW THIS YEAH LET HIM LEARN MORE FROM KYLE ORTON HE PLAYED WAY BETTER THEN TEBOW LAST SEASON…TEBOW AINT READY TO BE THE STARTER HES A RUNNER NOT A POCKET PASSER STILL HAS ALOT TO LEARN WE BETTER OFF WINNING WINS WITH KYLE ORTON WHO HAS BETTER ACCURACY N MOVES BETTER IN THE POCKET LOOK AT THE NUMBERS HE PUT OUT THE LAST TWO SEASONS WITH THE BRONCOS START KYLE THIS SEASON FORGET ABOUT TEBOW….

  20. OrangeAndBlue302/420 says:

while i do agree that meril went a little over the top with it, i mean ripping a second year player for 6 and a half mins is a little much in my opinion but anyways he wasn’t really wrong on what he said. the broncos would be insane to start tebow week 1 or any week for that matter in my opinion. i dont know maybe im old school but i believe you should always support your starters, specialy the quarterback. all these people crying for tebow are just a little off, orton may have cost the broncos 2 games, if that, and i mean a game is never decided by one play or one player anyways. i thought drafting tebow was one of the worst moves in broncos history because of what he brings, and that is distractions, we had and still have a more than capable quarterback in orton. people just need to stop slobbing on tebow, its annoying and imature and frankly with all this tebow talk it really just makes dis like bronco fans more. if and when its teboows time then so be it, but for now how about you support the players instead of talking of boo ing him, how could you boo someone wearing the orange n blue thats just disrespectful to everyone wearing it, and the man is being an absolute pro about it, please just grow up folks.

  21. Darkeyes says:

Last I heard was Orton was doing no mentoring what so ever. so lets not use that as an excuse to sit tebow anymore cuz why would he? Orton wants his job he doesnt want to help tebow take it from him.

  22. OrangeAndBlue302/420 says:

Orton is still a young qb why would he mentor someone, this is not a farve situation or mcnaab, orton doesnt need to be getting 9 mil for mentoring someone.

  23. ColoradoBoy says:

ORTON ORTON ORTON ORTON ORTON ORTON ORTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!BRONCOS BRONCOS BRONCOS BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  24. s1llyboy310 says:

I think instead of trading orton we should rather trade tebow to maimi for brandon marshall or a 2nd round pick or lower becuz having tebow on our team i think its just a distraction to our team mates MAYBE THATS Y WE LOST SO MANY GAMES LAST SEASON CUZ OF THE RETARD OF MCD FOR DRAFTING HIM N OF HIS RETARD DECISIONS HE MADE DUMB MCD….imagine having brondon marsahll AKA THE BEAST back with us our number 1 reciever n 2nd brandon lloyd at 3rd eddie royal at 4th eric decker n 5th matt willis AND AT 6 SPOT DEMARYIUS THOMAS EVEN THOUGHT HES A GREAT BUT HE ALWAYS HAS A NEW INJURY THATS Y I LEAVE HIM LAST

  25. skeeter01 says:

Lets trade Tebow to St,Louis, and get Bradford in here………..
