2011 Training Camp – Day 5: P.M. Blog

August 1st, 2011 - 8:08pm by Gray Caldwell

Anytime the Broncos are on the field two times in a day, the second session is strictly a walkthrough with an extremely brief shooting period. For that reason, we most likely won’t have many photos for the P.M. blogs — if any.

But below are some quick hits from Monday’s evening practice.

  • Newcomers Derrick Harvey (No. 95), Dante Rosario (No. 49) and Daniel Fells (No. 86) hit the practice field at Dove Valley for the first time, watching the walkthrough from the sidelines.
  • Another new Bronco, David Anderson (No. 89), stood beside Brady Quinn during the first half of practice looking over the script of the session. Offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy joined their huddle a few times to interject.
  • D.J. Williams participated in the walkthrough after sitting out the morning session.
  • Von Miller wore his trademark glasses throughout the practice and a Broncos hat with the bill bent back up toward the sky. As I said, shooting period is limited so we didn’t get a shot of it — we’ll try to find it next time. Looks like it took a lot of work to bend it like that.
  • If Miller wearing glasses during practice didn’t emphasize the lightness of the walkthrough, maybe this will. After jogging through a play, Brandon Lloyd noticed a rabbit on the field and proceeded to bend down and try to coax it towards him. It didn’t work. The rabbit ran away and Lloyd ran back to the huddle to hear the next play call.
  • When he wasn’t on the field, Rahim Moore was almost always taking a knee beside Brian Dawkins, listening intently to the 16-year veteran.
  • The players have a day off Tuesday, but will be back on the field Wednesday afternoon at 2:20 in a session open to the public. Both McCoy and Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen spoke to the media after practice, and we’ll have more on what they had to say on DenverBroncos.com shortly.

Q looks a lot bigger than I imagined!

    2. Orange you glad says:

I think Rahim Moore is going to be a good one for this team he is in golfed in his play book all the time and when he is not he is asking questions and doing what he came here to do.

    3. baylinorcrush says:

First I was wondering what Rahim had to do with golf then I realized it was engulfed, never really usually point out to spelling but this one had me stumped for a minute, LOL.

    4. BeastFromEast92 says:

Glad to see Ayers sporting his old college #91.

Soak it in Moore, that’s why Dawk is still here!

    5. BeastFromEast92 says:

Too funny,Bunkley traded to Browns but refuses to play in Cleveland,so Eagles trade him to Broncos instead for an undisclosed draft pick, lol.

      Good choice Bunkley.

“Tebow is a great football player. It’s our job to make him a great QB”.

Hard to do when riding the bench…..Orton-B-Gone!

    6. BroncoAussie says:

That means Irving is in 56!

    7. TD RUWM says:

Can’t wait to get all these guys in practice that are free agents. They will have one week to get ready for a game.

    8. BeastFromEast92 says:

Parcells should listen to his fans, lol.

    9. BeastFromEast92 says:

I saw where August 11th is the 1st preseason game, wow not much time to prepare,I see a lot of injuries,Hammies, that sort of thing happening!

    10. OKBronco22 says:

Ive heard a couple rumors that will land us with Asante Samuel one was a 3 team trade sending Orton to the Skins, for pick/s and us sending those picks to Philly for Samuel. And the other one was us sending DJ for Samuel straight up…anybody else see that?

    11. Broncos Born & Raised says:

Hopefully not to us! We’ve had enough injury laden years, it’s our turn for a good one! Listening to the Allen interview was a pleasure. Our defense is going to be feared! It’s been awhile! Funny stuff by the way, Aussie.

    12. Broncos Born & Raised says:

I saw the first one. It sounded like a wild concoction of the combined hopes and dreams of the blogging community haha. How ideal: we lose Orton and get Samuel. Just don’t think it will happen.

    13. broncos4life22 says:

i dont think its parcells anymore, didnt he leave?

    14. sndvl says:

BFE, it’s also hard to do when he hasn’t earned the job either!
I heard Quinn is getting reps with the 2nd team.
Nice find Aussie. Drive that price up.
And if we can get better by trading Orton(ie Asante Samuel), then by all means do it. I’m against trading him just for the sake of pleasing the masses!

    15. BeastFromEast92 says:

sndvl, how can he earn the job, when he’s practicing with the 2nd team???

Bunkley reportedly failed a physical is why he didn’t go to the Browns!!!
      Is he injured??

    16. BeastFromEast92 says:

sndvl, you’re chanting Orton so loud they can hear you all the way to Miami..lol.j/k.

    17. sndvl says:

      Lol BFE! You’re right

    18. TD RUWM says:

      Beast,

He is running 2nd team for a reason. He is the second best QB on the team. I don’t understand why so many people are adamant that Tebow start right now. He is awful in the pocket and needs more time to learn how to adjust to taking snaps, dropping back, and throwing on time. Let him learn how to be a QB before he gets his shot. In the meantime let’s try and concentrate on winning as many games as we can and build something for the future.

    19. BeastFromEast92 says:

Just hate to see that 9 million bucks go to Orton when we can use it in FA,were not going to the playoffs anyway, besides playing is the best way to learn…..hands on experience!

sndvl…No disrespect intended bro, just so you know!

    20. 3rdGeneration says:

Somehow I missed the QQ reference. What does it mean?

    21. sndvl says:

3G- Quarterback Quagmire. Started last year with McD…ugh

BFE- no disrespect taken. I understand my stance on Orton opens me up to ridicule and ribbing. I can take it. Don’t get me wrong. I’m rooting for Tebow to be successful. Now just isn’t his time. And who knows? What if we do shock the world and make it to the tournament! Never say never…

    22. 3rdGeneration says:

Sndvl thanks. While I’m at it. What does your name mean?

    23. BroncoBoy2012 says:

Champ and Asante at CBs? Sign me up haha! (as long as we keep DJ in the process). Shanahan and Orton would be a good duo too.

Also, on the previous blog someone said Derrick Harvey was a DE/DT…well he is 268lbs so by my understanding I believe that would classify him strictly as a DE haha. No disrespect

    24. BroncoAussie says:

BroncoBoy, Ayers is about the same and they believe he can kick inside to DT as well. A DE/DT is more about strength then size.

    25. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Bay, I cannot lie, it took me a while to figure out the golf thing as well lol.

Glad the hear the fans chanting for Orton. It has to be something Orton would like and somewhere he would want to go to. No matter where he has been, no matter how well he has done, no respect. no one chanting his name. Nothing like being where u are wanted. Take the deal Orton.

I dunno about Asante but whatever gets Orton out I guess. Would prefer DRC :-) … yea i know im a greedy bastard but Asante is 30 lol. Either way its cool … its all rumor anyway … I have learned to stop getting excited about rumors. heck we can start one now and spread it like wild fire if we wanted lol. TRB out…

    26. sndvl says:

      3G, no prob!

Sndvl is basically my last name with no vowels-Sandoval. However, I chose my handle around the same time Jake the snake came on board. He being a former SunDevil, it just seemed too right!
As for the QQ, I believe it was either OC or baylin who coined the phrase. It escapes me at the moment, as I don’t want to take credit for it!

    27. 3rdGeneration says:

I agree with Bays earlier assessment, and it echos what I was saying this morning, in some ways.
DE: a solid present state assuming Ayers plays to his potential
DT: perhaps we solidify this position next year, below average now
      LB: a bright future
      S: a bright future
CB: solid due to Champ, but we need at least one more. I’m really hoping Thompson has a breakout year. I really like this kid, but TBD. Goodman is ok, but I believe he’s fading considering he couldn’t stay upright last year.
      WR: Solid
      TE: Bright future
      OL: bright future
RB: we’ll see what Moreno does this year, but I’ll give this a bright future rating
      QB: TBD hopefully this year

Basically I believe we need to address CB, DT, RB, and who the hell knows about QB next year in the draft and FA and I believe we can contend again next year with a potential for a great team in 3 years.

    28. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Feel bad for Henne, to be tryign to practice and hearing people chanting for you to lose your job and bring in another guy not even on the roster lol. Thats what Miami gets, they can’t start a trade and get thier fans excited and BS. I mean seriously, Henne sucks. He was benched for Thigpen, Thigpen who they ended up cutting. So u are gonna start a guy you benched and replaced with a guy u cut? LMAO … Ill give Orton one thing, he is a quick study, as far as nailing down McDs playbook and Foxes already so it will seem. If he becomes a dolphin, it will be a real test of his study skills lol. TRB out…

    29. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I just saw this video. Probably really late on it but for those like me who may not have seen it.

    30. socalbigbroncofan says:

      QQ= quarterback quagmire

    31. Bones1965 says:

mike ireland is the gm of Dolphins. Make that trade happen please.

    32. Bones1965 says:

Broncos one of five teams looking at Osi of the Giants 72.

    33. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Well I will say one thing for this front office. All the Dlinemen to hit the market, they have shown interest in. I appreciate the interest but the fact that they want a 1st round pick for Osi is ridiculous. 29 yr old, with some injury history … mixed with the fact that rookie wage scale doesn’t have players willing to give up 1st rounders anymore. The best they should expect is a 2nd and even that is too expensive for us. Not unless we had a extra 2nd from Orton. Either way, I personally think Osi is too old to warrant trading a high round pick for. But with our luck this offseason, i dont have to worry about us landing him lol. Another one goes to the rams. TRB out…

    34. 3rdGeneration says:

Or maybe the Eagles will snag him.

    35. Atwater4HOF says:

Ryan Harris to resign today?? Well that is a pleasant surprise

    36. Atwater4HOF says:

Out of college Franklin was set to play either guard or tackle. Not a huge fan of Beadles so I’d love to see Franklin swipe his spot and let Harris start again at tackle. That’d make for a truly powerful oline with big Franklin mowing people down as a pulling guard. Yikes

    37. baylinorcrush says:

The QQ is my patented definition of the QB situation in Denver ever since McD took over and turned the world upside down on us, so every time you use it, kindly remit $10 to my P.O. Box, thank you.

    38. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, this one has caught me completely blindsided since whenever Elway has gone in depth talking about the OLine the entire off season he has never ever mentioned the name Harris for the rotation, weird turn of event to say the least, BFE will be a very, very happy man today:

The Broncos are close to adding quality depth to their offensive line.

Ryan Harris provides not just quality depth, because he was the Broncos’ starting right tackle the previous three seasons. And may have a chance to make it four.

Officially, Harris will make a free- agent visit with the Broncos at the team’s headquarters today. But as was the case with defensive tackle Marcus Thomas, visits for Broncos free agents who already know the facility are likely nothing more than a formality to re-signing.

Harris would get a chance to win his job back at right tackle, which is held by rookie Orlando Franklin, a second-round pick. If Franklin wins the job, Harris would be an ideal backup because he can also spell Ryan Clady at left tackle.

    39. Atwater4HOF says:

I’m surprised the market for Harris wasn’t stronger. Teams like the Bears, Skins, or even Lions could have gotten him for relatively cheap. Oh well, I’m certainly happy to hear we have a shot at keeping him. He has a lot of talent, when healthy

    40. baylinorcrush says:

The pressure is building on the players and coaches over the short preparation time for this season as the reaction to signed FAs not being able to practice until Thursday demonstrates, like it’s just about freaking out time ladies and gents:

Because the NFL lockout destroyed the offseason and a new collective bargaining agreement wasn’t in place until the eve of training camps, unrestricted free agents have found themselves on the outside looking in despite already settling into their new homes. They have signed with new teams, but they cannot participate in practice or any other workouts until Thursday.

Because the league and the NFL Players Association wanted to make sure the league’s players and owners had formally ratified the new CBA, there was a buffer built into the deal between when teams could negotiate with, and sign, unrestricted free agents and when those free agents could take the field.

If the CBA is not ratified by Thursday, all unrestricted free-agent deals would be voided. That is not expected to happen, but the contingency had to be planned for.

“I think everybody understands the reasoning,” Broncos coach John Fox said. “But as a player or a coach, for what we’re doing, it doesn’t make complete sense from that perspective. We understand the logic, but we’re trying to get ready to play a football season.”

The rule has meant the likes of safety Brian Dawkins, kicker Matt Prater, linebacker Wesley Woodyard, defensive tackle Ryan McBean and any other veteran player signed since the opening of Broncos camp has been able only to stand on the sidelines and observe, and attend team meetings.

With a pencil tucked behind his right ear instead of a football in his hands, Broncos wide receiver David Anderson offered his description of the “hurry up and wait” nature of this year’s free agency.

“Miserable,” Anderson said, smiling. “It’s miserable. It’s really, really hard to watch, really, really hard to wait, but you have to follow the rules and those are the rules.”

“You sign, you’re excited, ready to get going, and then you can’t,” defensive lineman Marcus Thomas said. “I wish it was something different, but rules are rules and we’ve got to follow the rules.”

    41. brian_schneider says:

Yeah, I guess the Broncos are trying to re-sign Harris and let him compete to win his starting job back from Franklin. We’ll see about that, it seemed like he never fully recovered from his foot/toe injury last season. However part of me thinks that McD tried to rush players back too soon.

Henne has to be a bit discouraged but that should make him want to peform in practice that much better. We chant for Tebow but it is on here and other message boards. I also feel that Orton may be the “better” QB but I just would like to see Tebow. I guess since the fans really don’t matter in football I’ll just be content, for the time being, with Orton.

$10 is a bit much isn’t baylinorcrush. I’m thinking more like $3 since I know I’ve used you’re coined term quite frequently. You just put it on my tab and send me a bill. LOL!

    42. baylinorcrush says:

I’m not as excited as BFE will be about it but with only one guy in there now to adequately protect Tebow’s backside if he does start, bringing in a back up if Franklin goes down seems like it would be a priority.

And to me this move can easily be construed as if management is expecting Tebow to start at some point this season and probably sooner than later, and maybe right off the bat.

    43. imready says:

Jees, I figured Bronco fans were some of the smartest in the NFL. Don’t think that’s true now with Miami fans chanting for Orton over Henne and Bronco fans chanting for Tebow over Orton. LOL Reality is for me, I think we come out of this ok no matter what happens. If Orton stays we have a winning season. If Orton goes and Tebow starts , chances are he struggles and we draft Luck next year. If Tebow starts and succeeds, we have an icon for a QB that will bring financial success along with success on the field for the Broncos. Anybody got a three sided coin to flip?
Mike McCoy gets me excited about the offense, take the best of McD’s and Carolina’s offense plus add some new twists. Very wise way of doing things. So many people, McD comes to mind, think everything needs to be done their own way.
I thought R. Harris was gone, I don’t remember seeing him on the roster. That O.Franklin guy has to play, he’s one intense looking dude. I can’t imagine seeing him coming towards me with a full head of steam.
Heck, I’m too old to get out of the way, they’d have to dig me out of the turf.

    44. brian_schneider says:

It seems like they are making all these moves to Tebow. So maybe they are looking past this season and then going with Tebow. Actions speak louder than words and right now it seems their actions are leaning towards Tebow, but their words are saying “Orton is the starter.”

    45. baylinorcrush says:

Not exactly something to look forward to:

Former Seahawks LB Lofa Tatupu is visiting the Oakland Raiders.

    46. brian_schneider says:

That’s exactly what I was worried about,”If Orton goes and Tebow starts , chances are he struggles and we draft Luck next year” If we’re going to do that why not just get rid of Tebow now?. We gave Orton 2 seasons possibly 3 with this upcoming season. We all want Tebow and you’re only willing to give him a 1 season chance to prove himself. I know Tebow isn’t going to grow into Elway status onvernight or for one maybe two seasons for that matter. I’m just saying we all want Tebow but we’re not willing to give him a few seasons?

    47. baylinorcrush says:

“If Orton stays we have a winning season”, I’ll make sure to hold you to that imready, haha.

    48. baylinorcrush says:

I can’t wait to finally see the depth chart on this website, they keep saying it will be released before the first preseason game so it can’t be too far away, it will be very interesting to say the least with all the changes we are going through, not just starters but who will be on the second team or third, just simply can’t wait!

    49. brian_schneider says:

More like “If Orton stays…on the bench, we have a winning season.” LOL! I shouldn’t be too quick to judge. Although McCoy said they would basically keep some of the terminology and stuff the same to help Tebow which should also help Orton which means he should ultimately be more productive right?
