2011 Training Camp – Day 5: A.M. Blog

August 1st, 2011 - 12:47pm by Max Henson

The Broncos continued their work in pads Monday morning during another sun soaked practice at Dove Valley, and another day brought another batch of big hits and big plays to get you caught up on.

ROLL CALL
Newly-signed tight end Dante Rosario made his way onto the field in shorts and a T-shirt shortly after practice began. Rosario watched the tight end drills and had a chance to go over the plays with Offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy during the action.

Defensive lineman Marcus Thomas — who was recently re-signed by the Broncos — was also in attendance but did not participate.

D.J. Williams watched practice in shorts once again due to a hamstring injury, and running back LenDale White missed another practice due to back spasms.

After signing with the team and wearing No. 85 yesterday, wide receiver David Anderson came out wearing No. 89 today — swapping numbers with rookie tight end Virgil Green.

ONE-ON-ONE HIGHLIGHTS
After some work in position drills, fans were treated to some more good work from the receiving corps in one-on-one drills.

Early on, Tim Tebow connected with Matt Willis deep on about a 40-yard pass.

Later, Eron Riley ran a route that got him huge separation and made for an easy pitch and catch over the middle with Tebow.

Willis’ route-running drew some praise from Wide Receivers Coach Tyke Tolbert, who applauded a well executed curl route, saying, “Nice footwork. That was pretty.”

POUNDING THE ROCK
The Broncos spent an entire team drill session working on the running game and that got the men in the trenches excited.

Knowshon Moreno had a couple nice cut-backs to find a hole and break into the secondary but the first-team defense had a good stretch where they stuffed multiple plays up the middle. That elicited some trash talk across the line of scrimmage.

Jeremiah Johnson and Mario Fannin saw some extended second-team action and both found some room to run thanks to some solid work up front by the offensive line. Fannin found a gaping hole on the right side on the last play of the session prompting Offensive Line Coach Dave Magazu to throw his hands into the air with excitement after seeing the play work flawlessly.

ROOKIES LAY THE WOOD
Rahim Moore may be know as a “ball-hawking” safety, but he’s doing his best to make sure people respect his physicality as well.

After producing some head-turning collisions in his first few practices, Moore was at it again this morning as he met Moreno coming full-speed and stopped him dead in his tracks. The crowd enjoyed that and Moore received a series of high-fives from his defensive teammates.

Rookie middle linebacker Nate Irving made his presence felt during a seven-on-seven drill when he upended wideout Britt Davis over the middle as he stretched out for a pass.

RED ZONE RUNDOWN

  • The first red zone play of the day worked perfectly for the first-team offense, as Kyle Orton sucked the defense in with play-action and found tight end Julius Thomas wide-open in the corner of the end zone for an easy 20-yard score.
  • Orton later found wide receiver Eddie Royal on a quick post and the speedy wideout sprinted to the pylon for another score.
  • The first-team defense would enact some revenge, however. Orton tried to squeeze the ball through a tight window to Royal in the back of the end zone but middle linebacker Joe Mays read it all the way and jumped in front of the receiver to snag the interception. Mays spiked the ball in celebration and cornerback Champ Bailey picked the ball up and spiked it again for good measure. The entire defense was excited as they trotted off to the sideline, and even Royal came by and gave Mays a high-five after all had settled down.
  • Tebow was intercepted after a pass intended for tight end Dan Gronkowski popped up into the air and fell into the arms of Syd’Quan Thompson.
  • Brady Quinn got the offense back on the board with a strike in the back of the end zone to wide receiver D’Andre Goodwin.
  • PLAYMAKERS

  • Defensive back Chevis Jackson had one of the plays of the day for the defense, sliding across the field to record an interception on pass from Quinn right before it hit the ground.
  • During team drills, Orton connected with Royal on a deep post for a long score.
  • Tebow hit Goodwin on a curl route and the receiver broke free for another long score.
  • Orton showed some mobility on a rollout play where he fired a sharp pass to Eric Decker, who was streaking across the middle.
  • Wideout Mark Dell made a nice catch over on a go route over the middle as Tebow floated the ball in for a completion that drew plenty of cheers from the crowd.
  • QUICK HITS

  • After practice, Knowshon Moreno spent a good half-hour catching passes from a JUGS machine.
  • Britton Colquitt punted during special teams drills for the first time all training camp.
  • The players will be back on the field tonight for a walkthrough session closed to the public. The next public practice will be on Wednesday at 2:20 p.m., as the players have a day off Tuesday.

The stats are certainly encouraging. This Tebow/Orton debate will go on forever and both sides have valid points. It’s all up to what Mr. Fox thinks is the best approach and either way I will agree with him

    2. 1nOnlyTRB says:

      3* starts …. sorry.

    3. Atwater4HOF says:

That wasn’t a direct comment to you TRB. It was just a comment in general about how his intangibles are unable to disguise his physical flaws (that he is IMPROVING on)

    4. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Its cool HOF … i knew it wasn’t a direct shot at me. Nothing in your post sounded like an attack or insult to me so its all good. I just decided to respond since i had previously hyped his leadership skills.

    5. BeastFromEast92 says:

You can’t tell if Orton is improving in the clutch until we see him choke again, that’s when I puke again, let the kid loose and let him grow,we ain’t going to the playoffs, there is nothing that takes the place of on the fiield “EXPERIENCE”.

    6. Broncos Born & Raised says:

      Well said, Beast.

    7. BeastFromEast92 says:

B&R,great comparisons Tebow vs an NFL style ready QB in Bradford!!!

    8. O&BinCostaRica says:

That’s right BFE! Let Tebow PLAY!

      Orton-b-Gone!

      Tebow Time!

      Go Broncos!

    9. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Its all good BFE, if Orton starts he start and at least he will have a run game and TEs i guess. TE’s and RBs are your best friend in the redzone and under McD they were just field ornaments. Julius Thomas seems to be seriously killing it in practice; with the 1′s no less. Won’t know for sure till preseason tho. Aug 11 is marked on my calender. At least i believe its Aug 11 LOL

    10. O&BinCostaRica says:

Oh and with a tougher defense and better running game it would be the PERFECT moment to let him grow!

    11. O&BinCostaRica says:

Same argument can be made for developing Tebow TRB. The best way to develop a young QB is with strong TE and RB play. Right?

    12. broncofanatic66 says:

Orton is a good QB. However, if I have to watch him start another game I will vomit. He is not a come from behind QB. He does poorly under pressure and he collapses if someone so much as touches him.
Tebow on the other hand has flaws but he excels under pressure. He is clutch and when the play is broken that’s when Tebow makes the defense pay. Tebow is our only real choice.

    13. Broncos Born & Raised says:

      Thanks, Beast!

    14. 1nOnlyTRB says:

O no doubt costarica … if u saw my last few post u would know im pro Tebow. But if Orton does start, all we can hope for is improvement from last year. But I agree, a TE is a young QBs best friend and so is a running game and a strong D (hopefully ours is strong now). Last week around this time I was full with such Trade and FA hopes …. now … blahhhh lmao. TRB out…

    15. sndvl says:

How many have forgotten what the Duke of Denver said when he first came in-

Tebow is a great football player. It’s our job to make him a great QB.

    16. Broncos Born & Raised says:

      Real talk, Sndvl!

    17. sndvl says:

I keep hearing Orton chokes in the clutch. I guess that come from behind win against Tennessee doesn’t count? You wanna counter with the Jets game? I blame Hill for that one! How bout those wins against Dallas and NE two years ago? Marshall had a little influence on one of those games, eh TRB ;)
The Indy game? Bad play calling can be blamed. Along with a horrible D and non existent or ineffective run game.
Honestly, it’s year 3 for Orton and no more excuses for him. He puts up or sits down. Simple as that. Considering it’s a contract year (and safe to say he’s playing with a chip on his shoulder), hopefully we are all surprised!

I just want some action to start. Then we will all see for ourselves!

    18. Broncos Born & Raised says:

We have to believe that EFX has a plan, and I think that plan involves Tebow. How soon does he take the reins is the question. Again shopping Orton around says to me that they are ready to put Tebow in at any given time. If Orton stays he’ll probably start week 1 though.

    19. Broncos Born & Raised says:

And yes, he’ll probably play well.

    20. baylinorcrush says:

Glad I went boating, I missed absolutely nothing, Orton vs Tebow debate all afternoon, the QQ, everything said has already been said here a hundred times or more and after this entire discussion no one is any closer to know what will happen and no one has changed anybody’s mind.

Interesting trade for that Philadelphia DT though, and for a pick not next year but in two years, hopefully not a very high one, will have to look more into that once I unwind, but nice to see the week following Black Week doesn’t resemble it at all.

Seems like we ended up the way I have said we would go all along, getting at least 3 DTs but not top tier for financial cap reasons, and lo and behold, look at what’s fallen on my lap now. Like TRB always tells me, the reason he is so off personnel wise is because he states what he would like the team to do, while I always state what I think the team will do and that is the main reason my personnel record is what it is and I like it that way.

Things are definitely looking up in all kinds of directions now:

At DTs with now much needed depth,

At LBs going from an awful corp to adding 3 players for it in the draft,

At safety where we were so old and rejuvenating that with two top draft picks,

On the Oline with a monster at RT who could protect Tebow’s blindside if he starts,

Adding a RB in FA in McGahee who can actually get one yard on 3rd downs,

Bringing in a fast undrafted rookie RB in Fannin who has enough upside to be the surprise of preseason,

Adding a handful of TEs when we only had two who were non existant which is all good for helping out with the running game which I wanna see so bad because it is what I love best,

And maybe even another jewel in hiding to add to my boy Willis in Dell at WR.

When you look at all that one thing sticks out:

We still have to make some moves for CBs, that is the only position that is left to address and it does need to, but overall we have grown by leaps and bounds these past couple of days.

It’s funny, once again with the Broncos it’s “better late than never”, anyone here who follows this blog knows I have said that about our team like a million times and it never fails, it takes time but eventually they get it, but there has got to be a more efficient way of running things, maybe EFX will eventually get there, actually making the right moves when they are first needed, not so far down the road that many negatives thing have happened in the process, which could lead me to talk about the QQ?

No, you guys have done that ad nauseum already, LOL.

    21. caramelloo says:

Is that my lil sis Ash?! What up sis! Man all of the family is coming back together! This is what I’m talking about!

    22. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Yea bay, def didn’t miss the QQ … and yea when u focus on certain things u do notice the team has grown, which is good. Not only am I excited about Running game and defense, I think I am most excited as well about Recieving TE’s. Namely Julius Thomas. The past 2 years have had TEs doing nothing, and TE’s may never win MVP, but they bail u out alot when it matters most, they are asked to block like Linemen and catch like receivers. Im just glad they will be used once more. TRB out…

    23. Broncos Born & Raised says:

Bay you didn’t like my Bradford vs. Tebow matchup? Didn’t realize someone had done that already. Woulda saved me a little work. But I like where the team is going.

    24. baylinorcrush says:

That was a good effort, I’ll give you that, haha.

    25. Broncos Born & Raised says:

You’re right, still didn’t change any minds though.

    26. O&BinCostaRica says:

Quick question off topic. Have we already used up 3 of the 14 padded practices available all year?

    27. strandoftds says:

Well getting Bunkley is a start at DT, he`s a big body with experience. I hope he plugs the hole against the run for us.

    28. royalbroncofan1 says:

Glad you like Julius Thomas TRB. I remember stating on here Broncos might draft him when you were talking about the TE from Wisconsin… Kendricks?

Thomas is gonna be special!! :-)

    29. caramelloo says:

Ok I’m starting to like what we have at TE and what we can do with them. Man I’m still excited to see what Dennis Allen is gonna bring to our D!! He was a key pick up and we hadn’t had a good DC since the Super Bowl days.

    30. strandoftds says:

Royal, Julius Thomas was in just about every play on the first team today, he and Eric Decker.

    31. strandoftds says:

Eddie Royal looked sharp today also.

    32. Rellentless75 says:

well Bay i couldnt put rellentlessbronco so i had to go with this…..lol

    33. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Yea royalbroncosfan, his name of Kendricks. Heard EFX had alot of interest in him. unfortunately he was scooped up before they could draft … or is it fortunately? because we got Thomas. Lol

    34. baylinorcrush says:

I bet you could of done rellentlessbronc

    35. Rellentless75 says:

nope it stopped at rellentlessbron….and i didnt wanna seem like a lebron fan soooo yea lol

    36. royalbroncofan1 says:

Lol TRB… Kendricks would have been a good choice as well and was highly rated. I think he went not too long after Rudolph. After the Rams drafted Kendricks, they decided to part ways with Fells. Like is size though (Fells), and pass catching skills.
It will be interesting to see which of these TE’s makes the Team. Last years carryovers have some real stiff competition. lol.

    37. conrose says:

I’m jut glad the Orton Vs. Tebow debate is over…for now at least

    38. E to the T says:

With All Due Respect to the Great John Elway,

Tim has Successfully Played the Quarter Back Position throughout both his High School and College Career.

Tim is All About putting the “W” in the Win Column and Has also Successfully Achieved that Throughout His Quarterback Career. and Seriously Focused and Determined to Move the Ball down the Field however it Gets Done.

      sndvl says:

How many have forgotten what the Duke of Denver said when he first came in-

Tebow is a great football player. It’s our job to make him a great QB.

    39. strandoftds says:

Just 10 more days and we have ourselves a football game in Dallas.

    40. OKBronco22 says:

Ive heard a couple rumors that will land us with Asante Samuel one was a 3 team trade sending Orton to the Skins, for pick/s and us sending those picks to Philly for Samuel. And the other one was us sending DJ for Samuel straight up…anybody else see that?

    41. TheHorseWhisperer7 says:

I was watching NFL Total Access and Lombardi was saying that Asante Samuel wants a trade and that he thinks that he’s definitely going to be gone before preseason. I say we go all out. We haven’t brought in a real proven player in awhile and he’s a good proven player. Champ is getting older and we need help at cornerback as it is. I think it sounds like a genius idea myself…

    42. 3rdGeneration says:

Somehow I missed the QQ reference. What does it mean?

    43. baylinorcrush says:

Quarterback Quagmire, came up with it and have used it here for many, many moons and so have many regulars, catchy as to our QB dilemna, starting with the Cutler’s demise.

    44. CarnageBronc says:

I would llike to go on record as saying that…..OMG….I support Kyle Orton….I now hold my head in shame….I just don’t get this whole attitude that people think we CAN’T win this year…I think the problem we had the last two years is now in St. Louis….we actually drafted well and we have a decent young core….the defense on paper seems to be much better and Fox is a defensive minded coach….I will boldly predict that with Orton at the helm we can go 9-7 or 10-6, with Tebow 3-5 wins max….I am now going to wash my mouth out with the tears of the McDaniels era….

    45. baylinorcrush says:

You happened to be the closest prediction last year, so I do pay attention to your winning record prediction, however I feel you are not giving enough importance to the fact that we will be operating under the humongous disadvantage of a hugely shortened off season specifically for all the bottom tier teams, too much too fix in too short of time. It will be much easier for all the good teams to remain that and we do play a lot of them, I just would like to know where you can see the nine or ten wins since I assume you have studied the schedule.

    46. baylinorcrush says:

BTW, I will take season record predictions between August 29th thru September 10th.

    47. Bro says:

I say trade for Asante Samuel

    48. Broncobet says:

I am really optimistic about the approach of the new regime, the caveat being that I have felt that way the past thirty four years.I bristle a little when people mention Champ getting old,he is still, as he modestly mentioned, in the top five corners in the league(plus I have his jersey).Re: the QQ(hehe)We really don’t know I hear rumblings that BQ is playing well and I definitely regarded him as Bambi on black ice.To me this looks like the NBA (but much more fun) where you have to be sure not to have big contracts so you have flexibility too offer them when you get closer to the goal.Go Broncos!!

    49. alexanserg says:

LOL, apparently I’m a geek. I always thought you were using QQ in the gamer parlance as an emoticon for crying. Generally used any time someone whines.
