2011 Training Camp – Day 5: A.M. Blog

The Broncos continued their work in pads Monday morning during another sun soaked practice at Dove Valley, and another day brought another batch of big hits and big plays to get you caught up on.

ROLL CALL
Newly-signed tight end Dante Rosario made his way onto the field in shorts and a T-shirt shortly after practice began. Rosario watched the tight end drills and had a chance to go over the plays with Offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy during the action.

Defensive lineman Marcus Thomas — who was recently re-signed by the Broncos — was also in attendance but did not participate.

D.J. Williams watched practice in shorts once again due to a hamstring injury, and running back LenDale White missed another practice due to back spasms.

After signing with the team and wearing No. 85 yesterday, wide receiver David Anderson came out wearing No. 89 today — swapping numbers with rookie tight end Virgil Green.

ONE-ON-ONE HIGHLIGHTS
After some work in position drills, fans were treated to some more good work from the receiving corps in one-on-one drills.

Early on, Tim Tebow connected with Matt Willis deep on about a 40-yard pass.

Later, Eron Riley ran a route that got him huge separation and made for an easy pitch and catch over the middle with Tebow.

Willis’ route-running drew some praise from Wide Receivers Coach Tyke Tolbert, who applauded a well executed curl route, saying, “Nice footwork. That was pretty.”

POUNDING THE ROCK
The Broncos spent an entire team drill session working on the running game and that got the men in the trenches excited.

Knowshon Moreno had a couple nice cut-backs to find a hole and break into the secondary but the first-team defense had a good stretch where they stuffed multiple plays up the middle. That elicited some trash talk across the line of scrimmage.

Jeremiah Johnson and Mario Fannin saw some extended second-team action and both found some room to run thanks to some solid work up front by the offensive line. Fannin found a gaping hole on the right side on the last play of the session prompting Offensive Line Coach Dave Magazu to throw his hands into the air with excitement after seeing the play work flawlessly.

ROOKIES LAY THE WOOD
Rahim Moore may be know as a “ball-hawking” safety, but he’s doing his best to make sure people respect his physicality as well.

After producing some head-turning collisions in his first few practices, Moore was at it again this morning as he met Moreno coming full-speed and stopped him dead in his tracks. The crowd enjoyed that and Moore received a series of high-fives from his defensive teammates.

Rookie middle linebacker Nate Irving made his presence felt during a seven-on-seven drill when he upended wideout Britt Davis over the middle as he stretched out for a pass.

RED ZONE RUNDOWN

The first red zone play of the day worked perfectly for the first-team offense, as Kyle Orton sucked the defense in with play-action and found tight end Julius Thomas wide-open in the corner of the end zone for an easy 20-yard score.

Orton later found wide receiver Eddie Royal on a quick post and the speedy wideout sprinted to the pylon for another score.

The first-team defense would enact some revenge, however. Orton tried to squeeze the ball through a tight window to Royal in the back of the end zone but middle linebacker Joe Mays read it all the way and jumped in front of the receiver to snag the interception. Mays spiked the ball in celebration and cornerback Champ Bailey picked the ball up and spiked it again for good measure. The entire defense was excited as they trotted off to the sideline, and even Royal came by and gave Mays a high-five after all had settled down.

Tebow was intercepted after a pass intended for tight end Dan Gronkowski popped up into the air and fell into the arms of Syd’Quan Thompson.

Brady Quinn got the offense back on the board with a strike in the back of the end zone to wide receiver D’Andre Goodwin.

PLAYMAKERS

Defensive back Chevis Jackson had one of the plays of the day for the defense, sliding across the field to record an interception on pass from Quinn right before it hit the ground.

During team drills, Orton connected with Royal on a deep post for a long score.

Tebow hit Goodwin on a curl route and the receiver broke free for another long score.

Orton showed some mobility on a rollout play where he fired a sharp pass to Eric Decker, who was streaking across the middle.

Wideout Mark Dell made a nice catch over on a go route over the middle as Tebow floated the ball in for a completion that drew plenty of cheers from the crowd.

QUICK HITS

After practice, Knowshon Moreno spent a good half-hour catching passes from a JUGS machine.

Britton Colquitt punted during special teams drills for the first time all training camp.

The players will be back on the field tonight for a walkthrough session closed to the public. The next public practice will be on Wednesday at 2:20 p.m., as the players have a day off Tuesday.
