2011 Training Camp – Day 3: A.M. Blog

July 30th, 2011 - 12:55pm by Max Henson

Saturday morning’s practice brought a welcomed sight as the Broncos took the field in pads for the first time.

It was another hot morning at Dove Valley, but the players were admittedly excited to be back in pads and the energy picked up on the field as a result, with playmakers coming alive once again throughout the session.

ROLL CALL
After leaving the field yesterday with injuries, rookies Von Miller and Quinton Carter were both back for the start of today’s practice. Both showed no sign of limitation as they rejoined their respective position groups.

In addition to Brian Dawkins — who has yet to practice — veterans D.J. Williams and Renaldo Hill did not participate. All three watched practice in shorts from the sideline.

And fresh after signing their respective tenders, linebacker Wesley Woodyard, kicker Matt Prater and defensive lineman Ryan McBean took in practice from the sidelines as well. The three are not able to take part in practices until the start of the new league year — next Thursday.

NEW DRILLS FOR THE DEFENSE
The introduction of pads signaled a change in the drill selection as each defensive position group rotated through some different stations.

Defensive linemen and linebackers each worked through a wrap-up drill where they shed blockers and stopped a would-be ball carrier. Players were later instructed to step over a series of pads before scooping up a loose ball for a score.

Defensive backs spent some time wrapping up as well in addition to thier interception drills, but all three position groups took a turn at the tackle mat, where players were told to stutter step, sprint towards a tackle dummy held above the mat and launch themselves at it. Those who didn’t wrap up got an earful on their way to the back of the line.

After the drill stations, Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen worked with the linebackers and defensive backs on their coverage assignments with Dawkins surveying the action right beside him.

GROUND GAME
The Broncos spent much of the first half part of practice working on the running game. Head Coach John Fox has expressed a need for a more balanced offense, and that was evident during team drills, when multiple running plays were called in succession.

The offense also spent a good amount of time hammering out thier blocking assignments on designed plays.

ONE-ON-ONES

  • The individual drills tend to benefit the recievers and Brandon Lloyd certainly took advantage today. On his first route Lloyd faked left and came back across the middle, sending cornerback Andre’ Goodman in the wrong direction for a wide open connection with Kyle Orton.
  • The matchup between Eddie Royal and Champ Bailey piqued the crowd’s interest and Bailey came out on top, knocking down a pass to a loud round of applause.
  • Eric Decker borught about some cheers as well as he reeled in a deep ball thrown by Tim Tebow down the sideline for an easy score.
  • PLAYMAKERS

  • Lloyd brought the crowd to its feet once again during team drills as he leaped for a ball thrown deep down the sideline by Orton and grabbed it for a big gain over his shoulder.
  • Orton worked well with Lloyd throughout the session and he also found Decker on a multiple occassions for short completions.
  • Later on, Orton tried to hit Lloyd deep down the sideline once again, but this time Bailey was all over it as he brought down the pass for an interception.
  • Royal showed off his speed after reeling a quick pass from Orton on a crossing pattern and picking up yards after the catch until he was finally stopped by rookie safety Rahim Moore, who delivered a solid pop to the reciever.
  • A candidate for Tim Tebow’s best throw of the session came on a well-placed pass to rookie Virgil Green. Tebow floated the ball over a couple defenders and allowed the tight end to pick up a solid gain with some yards after the catch over the middle.
  • Running back Knowshon Moreno found some space up the middle and recorded a long run before he was finally slowed down by members of the secondary well down the field.
  • The first and second team defensive lines recorded thier first sacks of training camp as Orton and Brady Quinn both had plays blown dead as D-lineman signaled they were in position for the sack.
  • The team will be back on the field tonight at 6 p.m. for a walkthrough session open only to the media.

      shaztah,

Your question on this was answered last year during the final 3 games.

Can’t find the report on Akoye but read it on a blog on espn. He would be an excellent guy to bring in and sign! He would be our other starter beside Vickerson!

    3. broncosfreak30 says:

Here is the report on Okoye!! He would be the best pickup for a DT now!!

The Texans announced several transactions on Saturday afternoon, releasing three players while signing one.

They released quarterback wide receiver David Anderson, defensive tackle Amobi Okoye and quarterback Dan Orlovsky. They signed undrafted rookie free agent Darius Morris (6-4, 315), an offensive tackle from Temple.

Anderson, 28, developed into a dependable slot receiver after the Texans drafted him in the seventh round in 2006. He started eight games in 2009 and set career-highs with 38 catches for 370 yards. He had 11 catches for 117 yards last season before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury.

Orlovsky, 27, spent two seasons as a Texans backup after signing from the Detroit Lions in 2009. He took one regular-season snap in those two seasons. Matt Leinart is expected to replace him as the Texans’ No. quarterback behind Matt Schaub.

Okoye, 24, was the youngest first-round draft pick in league history in 2007 at the age of 19. He set the Texans’ rookie record with 5.5 sacks and started 58 of 64 games in four seasons. He had 3.0 sacks and led all Texans defensive linemen with a career-high 45 tackles last season.

Morris, 23, was first-team All-MAC in 2010. He is the 16th undrafted free agent signed by the Texans in 2011.

    4. broncosfreak30 says:

      PLEASE SIGN OKOYE!!!!!

    5. broncosfreak30 says:

If you do not do anything else, sign Okoye!!!

    6. broncosfreak30 says:

      EFX….

If you are reading any of these blogs or anything, sign Okoye!!!! We got lucky that someone like him got released!! He has great talent and is VERY young!! Reminds you a lot of Mebane and he is even younger than Mebane!!

    7. gijames says:

      +1

      to the SIGN A.OKOYE CAMP!!!!!!!

    8. broncosfreak30 says:

I posted these 3 videos together above but of course the comment is awaiting moderation so I figured I would post them one by one!

    9. broncosfreak30 says:

      Ok guys, check this out!!!!

      Some comparing for you!!!

Mebane- had 10 sacks in 4 seasons with 148 combine tackles! Is 26 years old!

Okoye- had 11 sacks in 4 seasons with 138 combined tackles! Is 24 years old!

Basically they’re about the SAME DT!!! We just got another opportunity and we NEED TO JUMP ON IT VERY QUICK!!!!!! SIGN OKOYE!!!

    10. broncosfreak30 says:

OMGGGGG WE’RE ALREADY TALKING TO HIM!!! IT’S REPORTED ON DENVERPOST.COM!!!! WAY TO GOOOO FRONT OFFICE STAFF BABY!!!! GET HIM IN HERE!!!

HE JUST GOT RELEASED AS SOON AS I REPORTED IT AND IT IS ON DENVERPOST.COM NOW.

      HERE IT IS!!!

Broncos make contact with DT Okoye

The Broncos have made contact with representatives for free agent defensive tackle Amobi Okoye. The Texans had given Okoye, a former first-round pick by the team, permission to pursue a trade.

When no takers emerged with a trade offer, however, the Texans waived Okoye. Okoye was one of the most athletic defensive line prospects in that ’07 draft, he hasn’t always been able to consistently show that in the NFL.

He is, however, considered a quality run defender and the Broncos will have some competition for his services having been one of five teams who have formally expressed interest in the fifth-year veteran. At least part of the reason for the demand is that Okoye entered the ’07 draft as the youngest player on the board so he is still only 24 despite having already played four seasons in the league.

    11. broncosfreak30 says:

There are 5 other teams looking at him but we MUST get him!!! We have lost out on SOOO many players. This would kill us if we lose out on him!

    12. imready says:

You guys keep talking with your man crushes ablaze and I’m gonna end up hating Tebow. Gag me with a spoon. LOL
Okoye sounds like he would be a great pick up, wonder why he got released? I like his age, best to pick up young guys with potential and lots of years ahead of them.

    13. shaztah says:

See dump Orton and free up that 8 million then we can go after Okoye. Lord knows we need help on defense.

    14. tnalen66 says:

finally we are looking at a DT!

    15. shaztah says:

Do the Texans have a similar defensive scheme to our new one ?

    16. broncosfreak30 says:

We MUST sign him ASAP!! If we get outbid or lose out on him I really do not know what I will do! The front staff can get most of all of our trust back with just this one signing!! Him paired with Doom, Vick, and Ayers would be a pretty nasty D-line. Then we sign Marcus Thomas and add him as depth and he can switch in and out with Okoye if need be!!!

JUST PLEASE SIGN THIS GUY EFX!!!!

    17. gijames says:

bf30, thx for the vids and DP clipping! YESSSSS!!!!

    18. seweatherman1 says:

How much money do we have to plasy with getting him, and what did his contract look like that he had with the Texans? With 5 teams looking at him, he will most likely take the best offer, so we are going to have to make it terribly lucrative.

    19. gijames says:

shaztah, no sir… they are a 3-4 scheme… Wade Phillips DC bro

    20. shaztah says:

      Ok…but I am a ma’am lol

    21. strandoftds says:

Amobi Okoye 6’2″ 315lbs 24yrs. The Broncos are wanting young bucks on this team.

    22. sndvl says:

Wow. Surprised nobody has made a comment on the Tebow, Lloyd and Orton photograph.
      Lol!!!
Okoye would be a great addition!

    23. BroncosFan Duh says:

Get Okoye!!!!! its easy, just dish out the $$$ and cut some of the other players that put us over the cap with a 4-12 record.

    24. broncosfreak30 says:

      Strand..

Keep trying to call you bro to talk about Okoye!

    25. 3rdGeneration says:

We released Hill. No surprise or disappointment from me.

    26. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Glad to hear about Okoye. Kid is good. and young. Experienced but just 24. He will be the perfect fit. Dont get it twisted, the kid is nice. The problem is that Texans went from 4-3 to 3-4 so he is not a NT. They lost alot by having to cut him. I hope we get him more than I hope we get Mebane. He will probably be cheaper and younger. Only thing better than getting Okoye would be getting Mebane AND Okoye lol. But we are not a big market, and have a better shot at getting Okoye. Good thing Denver didn’t explore trade options with Okoye and now we can get him for free via cut. I am very excited about this. Always love players from my country of Origin lol. I know we don’t need to tell them this but make it happen guys. He is way better than any of the other guys we are trying to get in.

On another not, Eagles are looking like serious Contenders. I think we should trade Dawk to Eagles. Not really for profit but just so he can Retire with them and Hopefully win a Superbowl. I want him here for at least one more year but i think that is best for him and us and will free up cap space. And if we free up cap space, this staring contest with the Dolphins will come to a Halt. I am excited. Okoye would be a great addition. Give him a long term deal. Split up that money well lol. TRB out..

    27. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Eagles got Cullen Jenkins? Ive been away from a computer for too long lol. They are soem seroius contenders. I dunno how they have soo much cap room. Somethings fishy lol. TRB out…

    28. broncosfreak30 says:

      Hey TRB…

Don’t know if you know but Seattle resigned Mebane yesterday!!

Want to get on and play some Madden man??

    29. strandoftds says:

TRB, Mebane signed a big contract with Seatlle, he`s gone. Love the idea to get Okoye.

    30. strandoftds says:

Freak, I`ve been away from my phone most of the day. I`ll talk to you in awhile. Also DT Ty Warren is coming in tonight too.

    31. gijames says:

shaztah, sorry for the gender-word mismatch!

TRB, i love the fact that you shared a great insight about BDawk… it would be nice to not only offer him back to the Eagles… to contend for a SB ring, but to also free up the salary… maybe a 5th round pic? one of the ones they got from AZ?
      thoughts?

    32. dlmyers says:

Guys relax. Even though there are 5 other teams looking at him, if one is NOT Carolina then we should be OK. Waiver rule.

    33. gijames says:

dlmyers, does the *wait* period to clear waivers also apply in this part of the season?

    34. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Lol. Ive really been out of the loop. Out the house all day yesterday and today. Barely had internet access.

Looks like God gave us another chance with Okoye. 10th overall seletion not too long ago. Height: 6 ft 2 in (1.88 m) Weight: 315 lb (143 kg). Great stats. He has alot of time to improve his game since he is so young but has experience. Maybe all he needs is a good defensive coach to bring out more of his potential.

Hill cut. Chance at Amobi. Hopefully a Orton deal can still get done. Man, this would really save my sorry FA experience this year. Getting excited a lil. To release Hill, they must liek what they have seen in Rahim. And McBath is technically a “Vet” now. He gets injured Easy but thats fine since we have Rahim now who is likely the future.

    35. 1nOnlyTRB says:

gijames, a 5th round pick would be great. But Eagles are not in the Market to give away picks and I would find it hard to see them justifying giving a 5th round pick for a 38 yr old receiver. If they really wanted him around, they woulda kept him back then, so at this stage it would be more about doing wats best for dawkins and freeing up capspace, than makign a profit i would think. TRB out…

    36. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Freak30, just saw the post bro. If u still on. Yea lets play some madden. TRB out..

    37. broncosfreak30 says:

Ok TRB, I am getting on now!!

Y’all check this out! This doesn’t suprise me at all!!

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel newspaper is reporting that former Broncos receiver Brandon Marshall has been diagnosed with borderline personality disorder.

Reporter Omar Kelly writes, in an article published online Saturday afternoon, that the illness helps explain some of Marshall’s “volatile” behavior. Marshall received treatment from doctors in Boston this offseason, Kelly writes.

Many of Marshall’s off-field incidents occurred during the four years he played here in Denver.

    38. BeastFromEast92 says:

I knew Hill would get cut, because Moore is a great Safety, and so is Carter!

      I hope we sign Okoye!!!

    39. Broncobet says:

Oh boy I have borderline personality also. So what’s the deal with Okoye? We had the second worst record how can there be five teams vying? I guess we have first shot but the money has to meet his requirement, one of you guys who really know this stuff should give us the rundown. To me it really seems we should sign him.Nice and young too. Go BRONCOS!!

    40. strandoftds says:

Hill cut. Thought that would be the case.

    41. strandoftds says:

i just got a call from a buddy of mine. We`re heading up to see the Broncos practice at 8:50 A.M. I`m looking forward to it. YAAAAA!!!!!!

    42. strandoftds says:

I`m not much of an Autograph person but if I can get one it will be Tim Tebow, Champ Bailey, and Von Miller. Oh, and if Elways around hell ya!

    43. 3rdGeneration says:

johnelway: We agreed to terms with WR David Anderson from Houston. A great addition for us.

    44. strandoftds says:

Heading to Denver monday that is.

    45. Atwater4HOF says:

Anderson is a decent signing for us. Needed depth at wideout with Gaffeny gone and Thomas hurt. Still hoping Willis makes the opening day roster though

Llyod, Royal, Decker, Anderson, Willis sounds solid to me

    46. strandoftds says:

Looks like a solid group of WR`s. Don`t be surprised if Thomas ends up on IR.
