2011 Training Camp – Day 23: Blog

August 19th, 2011 - 12:49pm by Max Henson

Today marked the last day of training camp as the Broncos were back on the field at Dove Valley to complete a walkthrough session in preparation for tomorrow night’s home exhibition against the Buffalo Bills.

Here are some notes from the session:

  • Unlike previous walkthroughs the players took the field in shells.
  • Safety Brian Dawkins and wide receiver Brandon Lloyd both participated.
  • Broadcaster Verne Lundquist watched practice and spent some time talking with Head Coach John Fox.
  • Music from the team stretch included:

  • “Moment 4 Life” — Nicki Minaj
  • “I Do It” — Big Sean
  • “Good Times Bad Times” — Led Zeppelin
  • The team split up into their respective position groups and worked through drill stations at half-speed.
  • At the start of the session, linebackers and defensive backs worked on backpedaling before hauling in interceptions, the D-line worked on stunts, and the quarterbacks threw with the tight ends and wide receivers.
  • The players then broke into team sessions, with emphasis on clearly communicated substitutions.
  • Quarterback Kyle Orton and wide receiver Eddie Royal worked on deep patterns in between team drills.
  • The Broncos finished the practice with some work in the red zone and special teams drills before coming together for a team huddle.
  • Kickoff for tomorrow’s game is set for 6:35 p.m.

      BFE, whats up dude?

    2. strandoftds says:

BFE, I want Tebow to start but by Bays estimation by not being a realist, I`m sugar coating the situation because Orton and Quinn are farther along in practice, and Tebow is suppose to be traded because he`s struggling so to speakl. Tebow right now is like a lion in a cage waiting in the wings to do his usual damage control in games. I don`t buy what the papers and media is saying, it`s garbage. Tim Tebow will start as a Denver Bronco this year and will tear up the league, just watch.

    3. strandoftds says:

Kyle Orton will rarely score in the redzone and the Denver fans will not tolerate losing any longer. There will be a mutiny in Mile High with Orton at the helm. The pressure is on, Tim Tebow will get his chance as a starting QB for the Denver Bronco`s in 2011. Tim will light up the field just like he did the last three games in 2010, ELECTRIC!!

    4. 3rdGeneration says:

I’d actually really like to see Tebow and Quinn both get some reps with the first team offense so we/they (the coaches) can make an equal assessment.

    5. 3rdGeneration says:

Someone should make a jersey with 8, 15, and 9 on it, and put Orbown on the back.

Sorry, guys, was having problem posting.

    12. baylinorcrush says:

strand, talking reality you may not wanna read what Legwold has to say about Tebow, it’s right down scary at this point:

Most of the offenses Tebow has played in have been option offenses. So, if he feels an opening, he’s going to pull the ball down and go.

The trouble is that NFL defenses have speed all over the field — the worst NFL team would possess a defense faster, sideline to sideline, with bigger players doing the running, than any college team.

So the windows to run close quickly for Tebow, or any other quarterback, especially against disciplined defensive teams that close off the edges, forcing a quarterback on the run to stay in the middle of the field.

As a result, Tebow’s transition from his prep/college offenses to the pro game is bigger than many other quarterbacks. There is a chance it will take longer as well.

Even taking the snap from behind center is a project. A lot was made when Elway worked with Tebow for roughly 25 minutes after practice earlier this week.

But not much was said about what they were actually doing. And what Elway was doing for much of the time was simply showing Tebow how he should position his hands to accept a snap from center.

Tebow, behind center, has a tendency to split his hands — leaving some room in between — so when the ball comes up from center he bobbles it at times. There have been many snaps, in both training camp practices and in the preseason opener, where Tebow has either had the ball pop up on him, causing him to bobble it, or the ball has hit the ground.

That’s just one example of a fundamental Tebow has to work on. Add in footwork, throwing motion, recognizing coverages and working through progressions on pass plays and the list is long.

As those things come together for him in time, he will become, or should become, more patient in the pocket. Then his ability to move will be even more effective because defenses will have to honor his work in the pocket.

Currently, defensive coordinators around the league simply believe that if they can take away his first read — they say Tebow still locks in on the No. 1 receiver, even before the snap at times — Tebow will pull the ball down and try to run. They then will close off the running lanes to keep him pinned in the pocket.

    13. baylinorcrush says:

Now to make you feel better here is what Woody says about Tebow:

Tim Tebow will be the Broncos’ starting quarterback this season.

But The Tebow Thing won’t happen until Dec. 11.

Guess who’s coming to Denver then?

      Jay Cutler.

Tebow vs. Cutler: Back To The Future.

When the Broncos are 4-8 and eliminated from the playoffs, Tebow will become the starter — again.

    14. baylinorcrush says:

Now Woody gives us some info about our QQ and the financial ramifications of it I didn’t know all the details of:

Orton and Quinn become unrestricted free agents after this year. Orton will be paid $8.4 million (including a $1.5 mil roster bonus he received when he reported to camp). Quinn enters the final season of the five-year contract he signed as the Browns’ 2007 first-round pick. He is guaranteed $700,000 but will earn another $5.95 million if he plays 70 percent of the offensive plays.

Tebow, in the second season of a five-year contract, has been given a lump-sum payment of $6.28 million (an advance on salaries for four seasons), and will earn a $1.54 million bonus if he plays 45 percent of the snaps.

In one scenario for the Broncos — if, say, they keep the three quarterbacks and Quinn were to start 12 games — the outlay to quarterbacks would be more than $21 million, which is Manning money.

Meaning Orton starts the season = 8.4 mil

Quinn starts for the rest of the season after the fourth game when Orton goes down with an injury = 6.65 mil

Tebow no matter what he does = 6.28 mil

      Total: 21.33 mil

      Astronomical.

I’ll take those figures one point further:

No wonder Quinn has been putting in the work and dedication to make such drastic improvements:

Pay if he doesn’t play; $700,000

Pay if he plays 70 % of the snaps 6.65 mil

      Now I call that incentive!

As for Tebow, he gets 6.28 mil no matter what and only an additional 1.54 mil if he takes 45 % of the snaps

Orton has even less incentive getting paid in full no matter what, of course Orton is playing for his next contract so huge incentive to do well there and same can be said of Quinn, Tebow not so much, still under contract after this year.

Anyhow you guys can probably see why I like the money business part of it so much, it can indeed dictate a lot of what happens on the field, like it or not, money speaks, b.s. walks, always.

Crazy for Mr Bowlen, who would probably rather root for Tebow as back up over Quinn if Orton goes down, looking at a 4.41 mil savings…

    15. baylinorcrush says:

About our D, courtesy of Klis:

In last season’s 4-12 season, the Broncos finished last in the league in virtually every major defensive category, including points allowed, yards per game allowed and sacks.

When the Broncos started the enormous job of fixing their defense, the shopping list was long.

“We’re getting there, but you’re not going to just show up, put in a new defense and go,” Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey said.

“We’re probably a little further along offensively than defensively,” said coach John Fox as the team ended its training camp phase of the preseason Friday afternoon. “We had some carryover on offense from some players and coaches. Defensively, it’s all for the first time.

“They’re working hard at it, it’s a normal sequence. They’re learning what to do and how to do it. At some point we’ve got to have that ingrained so when the regular season starts, we can start focusing on what the opponent does. We’re getting there; we still have three more (preseason) games.”

“It’s a lot different,” defensive end Elvis Dumervil said. “It’s different in the scheme and in the attitude, the approach. Guys have to get used to being asked what they’re being asked to do.”

“I like the attitude of it,” Bailey said. “I’ve said before we’ve got to make sure, as a team, we have guys where they need to be to succeed. I feel like we’re going to be in those kinds of positions.”

The defensive starters, like the offense, are expected to play into the second quarter tonight. There is a chance they will see as many as 10 snaps of wildcat formation from the Bills with wide receiver Brad Smith, a record-setting quarterback at Missouri, lining up in the backfield.

    16. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Bay I dunno if you know this but when we were getting quinn I read alot of what brown fans had to say so I knew the aspect of his contract … its been that way since the begining. The way most brown fans felt was that … alot of the time when brady quinn was starting and maybe they weren’t getting out of him what they want perse … mid way through the season they will bench him (i think they only really did this once) … either way they never let him play the majority of the season because of that 70% of the plays thing. So they sabotaged him, or should I say his contract sabotaged him. That was the general belief amongst Brown fans. Just thought I would add that.

And I know Tebow has alot to work on … we all do the question still remains whats the best way for him to learn … sit and watch … or play and have it drilled into you through experience. He really can’t be Tebow in practice cuz when defenders come close they already call it a sack. In addition, because he never gets hit, there is less incentive to get better with the reads. Practice doesn’t accurately simulate the speed of a real game IMO … which is why I think Tebow struggles. In his 3 starts … he got progressively better with each game … not pro bowl good but I believe he learned more in those games than out of it. Thats what he needs, consistent in game “practice” … at least thats how I feel. Heck even Orton still locks into Lloyd from the begining. So it doesn’t suprise me that he has alot to improve on but like i said, the question comes the best way to learn and i think thats where opinions differ. But the fact that he only has a option playbook per se IS kinda scary but I guess they are trying to play to his strengths. I just believe he can do it. He already played NFL competition in the last 3 games and did well. Its all about a leap of faith. Browns took one on Colt McCoy as well and he struggled but he is still the starter. Anyway contrary to wat we though we saw on the field last year and heard, it seems like everyone is happy to report that the players support Orton and no one is backing Tebow … true? who knows but you need your team to buy in to succeed and if its Orton … sigh … Orton it is.

Anyway, Ive made peace that Tebow more than likely wont start so im not gonna fret … just gonna enjoy the preseason because I will get to watch him. Part of the enjoyment of watchign your team, in this case the broncos, is watching them grow together … which is why its probably hard for me to see Orton out there knowing that theres a 90 percent chance he is gone at the end of the year not unless he plays like Manning … and even if he does, he will go to the highest bidder, who is to say he wants to stay here with fans that have given him crap over the years. I don’t even think he truly wants to be here now, but he is a professional, and its his best financial option.

      Later days, TRB –

    17. sndvl says:

Bay did you read the article in the link I posted? I’m especially curious to hear your thoughts on what the end of it had to say.

I also like the precedent the NFL has set with imposing a 5 game ban for Terrell Pryor. Just me

    18. baylinorcrush says:

sndvl, not sure what you are referring to but I’ll quickly cover some of that: Fox has to have serious doubts at this point having Tebow as a back up over seeing what Quinn has done so far, wouldn’t be surprised at all seing a switcharoo on 2nd and 3rd string tonight. As for giving the captaincy to DJ I would imagine it’s kind of like a vote of confidence from Fox because he would like him to succeed since he is weak at the weakside position, not anything to do with the charges.

And TRB I hear you since you know that has been my first choice all along, playing Tebow now and find out what he is really all about before we have to draft next year, and also beccause no way no how do I personally think playoffs are even a remote possibility for this year so who cares, right? That being said, the coaches and players have made it clear they want to win now and so they are playing it the safe way with Orton. And that’s what I’m up against so now I’ve moved on from what’s best for Tebow because that’s obviously not their main concern, or maybe they are doing what they think is best by sitting him another year, no one knows, and just like in golf when two heavy weights battle it out up front of the leader board of a major and no one is paying attention to what’s happening behind them, a third guy pops out of nowhere and steals the spotlight, so the Quinn development on the other hand is now more interesting to me, just going with the flow without fighting it every inch of the way, done that all off season, life is too short, just saying.

    19. seweatherman1 says:

Bay, I am going to back up to your earlier post on Tebow.
“Even taking the snap from behind center is a project. A lot was made when Elway worked with Tebow for roughly 25 minutes after practice earlier this week.
But not much was said about what they were actually doing. And what Elway was doing for much of the time was simply showing Tebow how he should position his hands to accept a snap from center.”
My question on this, as it is with anything else regarding his training is: Why is it now in his second year as an NFL QB that he is being taught this. Last year he spent his entire year on the sidelines at training doing “mental reps” (whatever the heck those are) to go in the last three games and perform like he did.

Now for the money. I did not know this. It seems like this might be an incentive for the organization to react as the Browns did with Quinn. May happen again.

Lastly, sandvl, on Terrell Pryor, I am not understanding the NFL stepping in with this 5 game suspension because that is what the NCAA has imposed on Ohio State players this season. In that case and relating it to the situation in Miami. When the NCAA concludes their investigation into this and suspends those players for a number of games, since there are players in the NFL now that are implicated in this will they have to suffer the same penalties that is imposed on Miami and their current players? My opinion, the NFL should stay out of this NCAA fiasco. It is two different entities. I feel the suspension is one reason that Terrell Pryor left to go into the NFL to begin with.

    20. strandoftds says:

Bay I Totally agree with your post at 6:56 a.m. Tebow has to learn to be patient in the pocket and go to his 2nd and 3rd reads. It`ll all come together for Tim but it will take some time and of course many reps behind center. I still believe one day Tebow will be the starting QB for our Broncos in the near future. He needs lots of grooming as we know. He`ll get there, Tim has no quit in him.

    21. strandoftds says:

I also read the Woody Paige article about Tim Tebow starting against Jay Cutler and the Bears come Dec.11. Man that will be an awesome game to see.

    22. seweatherman1 says:

Elway needs to take Tebow on the practice field every day and just tell him. “Today we are going to work on the two step drop and pass in so many seconds, and we are doing it until it is natural with you doing it consistent. Tomorrow we are going to work on something else until it is natural and consistent, and the following day we are going to work on something else until it is consistent, so on and so on until he has him mentored, or molded, the way they want him.

    23. strandoftds says:

Sounds rather funny to me. all three of our QB`s are the equivalent of Peyton Manning`s monies, incentive based though. What a trip?!

    24. baylinorcrush says:

But Elway has another job to do, like VP of football operations, LOL, so Tebow will have to take a number, haha. Like I said it is obviously not the organization’s main focus to do everything they can to bring in Tebow as soon as they can now, that much should be obvious to everyone by now and the ones who still have not accepted that would serve themselves and their high blood pressure well to back off on the Tebow needs to start this season bit. The way I look at it, if it happens great, if not I won’t lose any sleep over it, heck I’m in good shape I don’t have a Tebow jersey!

    25. seweatherman1 says:

Wouldn’t it be something if all three performed like Manning? That would be the trip. What a dilemma for the coaching staff: “Who am I going to put at qb for today’s game?” One could only dream of such a dilemma.

    26. strandoftds says:

Tim Tebow does need to learn to trust in himself as far as going to his 2nd and 3rd reads but as we know he`s going to be himself when the game is on the line and all of the improvising comes natural to him when need be. Thats what makes his game exciting, that will never be taken out of his game, he just needs to curtail it and learn to trust in throwing in the pocket. He`ll get there.

    27. strandoftds says:

LMAO Bay! I bought a Tebow Jersey last year, and am not ashamed.

    28. strandoftds says:

I do respect what what you are saying though.

    29. baylinorcrush says:

It’s a better way to look at it to enjoy the season fully, at least for me.

    30. Broncos Born & Raised says:

I also Like how Paige said something to the effect of “I have to admit wrong about my 2010 prediction. I said Tebow would start against the Texans. He started a game earlier against the Raiders.’ I just hope he’s that close again. As for the Pryor situation I have to agree with seweatherman. They suspended Pryor for the 5 games because they wanted him in the Sugar Bowl. The right thing to do according to the rules as they are now would have been to pull him before the Bowl because he broke the rules. But of course they would have lost a lot of money as the attendance plummeted if they suspended him then. So really for the NFL to back this type a decision is a precedent I would rather do without especially since the way the initial suspensioncame about was a money decision not a morality decision.

    31. seweatherman1 says:

Oh make no mistake; I have accepted this as it is. I did that a long time ago. I am just wondering why an entire year of training was lost. Nope he will hit the playing field when they get ready for him to be out there and not before. My hope is that when he does his showing is spectacular to say the least. As for spending money on any memorabilia. Not happening here. I don’t have the funds for that kind of stuff.

I, like everyone else want our Broncos to get back to the crushing days!

    32. baylinorcrush says:

Well, last year was on McD’s clock and this off season on the cba mess so I really don’t see what we can blame EFX about the development of Tebow, just saying.

    33. seweatherman1 says:

bbr, what worries me about this precedent that is or now has been set is that we have some players on our team this is going to affect. Just as other teams have players that will be affected.

    34. seweatherman1 says:

True bay, I agree. Just goes back to showing just how much this lockout has affected him, and others, in their development.

    35. sndvl says:

I don’t see how the NFL can impose suspensions retroactively. I don’t think Goddell even wants to deal with the legalities of trying.
I should have been a little more clear about my stance on Pryor. I think it’s a good thing for the fact that it holds these young men,who have aspirations to play in the NFL, accountable for their actions. More specifically, before they enter the league. Not after! I don’t see this as a bad thing.
It’s be the commissioner’s MO since he the position to reform players conduct. My only question (rhetorical) is why didn’t this happen sooner?

    36. sndvl says:

      Meant to say-

It’s been the commissioner’s MO since he has taken the position.

    37. strandoftds says:

Nah, we can`t blame anybody for Tim Tebows developement in all of the twisted cba offseason situation. Again it is what it is. Tim will get his chance sometime this year. I`d like to think it`s sooner than later but I`m not apart of the EFX decision making.

    38. strandoftds says:

My concern for Kyle Orton keeps going back to not being able to score TD`s in the redzone, just like last week against the Cowboys. Same ole junk. If that continues the Mile High crowd will get antsy and the chants for Tebow will start.

    39. strandoftds says:

One remedy though is to pound the ball when we get into goal line situations, Orton has shown over and over that goal line throws add up to only FG`s.

    40. henryac says:

I think Fox was testing Orton last week and it looked like he didn’t do very well. I think Fox was pretty sure they could run it in but he wanted to see if Orton could throw it in given the trouble he had last year in the Red Zone. At some point this year, he is going to have to complete TD’s from 5 yards away and that seems to be where he bogs down. Guess Fox found out what he wanted to know.

    41. sndvl says:

Reminder for Fox NOT to leave starters out there too long

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dykt-1D_EBI&feature=youtube_gdata_player

    42. strandoftds says:

Henryac, we`ve gotta bring in Tebow for those kinds of plays near the goal line, Tim will punch it in.

    43. henryac says:

I suspect Fox knows that, too. I think he is pushing the walls with all the QB’s to see what they can do under different circumstances. Had it been a regular season game, Tebow likely would have taken over inside the Red Zone. I think Fox is looking for each QBs’ limit and his comfort zone. Get him out of that zone and see how well he does. The top coaches are great at getting teams out of thier comfort zone and beating them because they aren’t very good outside that zone. Right now, Fox has the time to find out. During the season, it will be too late.

    44. sndvl says:

Nothing like a trip down memory lane! And a little something to whet the appetite pregame style!!! Lol

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sWtSUgLm_Oo&feature=youtube_gdata_player

    45. strandoftds says:

One importanant aspect as well is with a great running game that will open up the QB rolling out of the pocket and thats where Tim Tebow is especially deadly when throwing on the run. But the running game is crucial to that.

    46. 3rdGeneration says:

I wonder if the NFL is annoyed at the Broncos over the QQ. I have to wonder if they chose to put us on opening Monday night assuming Tebow’s first start would draw a large audience.

    47. strandoftds says:

Nah, thats silly to even think that. Every team has it`s struggles and who cares what anyone else thinks. Every team has enough problems of there own. And on top of that who cares what the commentators think, they are wrong most of the time anyway. I always put some faith and trust in Adaam Schefter, he`s atleast decent about report new news in the NFL, he`s credable and respected by many.

    48. strandoftds says:

I meant who cares about what these so called NFL analysts think, they are mostly bias anyway.

    49. strandoftds says:

Also meant to say I put some trust into what Adam Schefter says. Wrong wording, duh! LOL @ myself.
