2011 Training Camp – Day 22: P.M. Blog

August 18th, 2011 - 7:42pm by Kenny Legan

The Broncos held a walkthrough practice Thursday evening, and while there isn’t much to report in terms of action, there were some notable changes to the lineup.

  • Receiver Brandon Lloyd and safety Brian Dawkins participated in the walkthrough after sitting out the morning padded practice.
  • Receiver Demaryius Thomas did some sprints, active stretching and dynamic exercises on the other field during the first part of practice.
  • Defensive tackle Marcus Thomas was in uniform without a sling but stood on the sideline with the first team during practice.
  • QUICK HITS

  • Receiver Eric Decker tried to catch a pass with one hand, but missed it, to which Lloyd yelled, “This isn’t a magazine shoot,” in possible reference to Decker’s 2010 GQ Magazine photoshoot.
  • Fullback Spencer Larsen and running back Knowshon Moreno did some long snaps to punter Brandon Colquitt on the sideline and both were actually quite good.
  • Safety Rahim Moore, who has said Dawkins is his role model, wore the same Broncos wide brim hat that Dawkins wears every walkthrough. He wasn’t the only one though, as that trend is starting to spread throughout the team with Quinton Carter, Syd’Quan Thompson and Running Backs Coach Eric Studesville among the hat wearers.
  • Orton, guard Chris Kuper and center J.D. Walton threw and punted the ball on the other field while the team went through special teams drills.

The big thing is having brought Tebow in town has turned a lot of this Bronco Country fan base to become overly involved emotionally in the matter as shown by the record # of jerseys ever sold by anyone last year and he is just a back up QB. That’s what Tebow brings to the table, raw emotions, but right or wrong Fox is anything but that, liking to play it close to the vest, dominating D and running the rock, hence Tebow expectations have been tampered and the emotional Tebow fans are letting us know exactly how they feel about that, they’re mad and it’s their perogative, nothing wrong with that, but for my own sanity I have decided I will no longer be bummed one way or the other because I want to enjoy the season, win or lose, with Tebow, Orton or Quinn at the helm, Go Broncos has got to the motto for me now.

    2. baylinorcrush says:

      got to be the motto…

    3. brian_schneider says:

Football is a “team” sport and the Broncos need to play like one. No matter who is the starting QB, we need all phases of the game to be playing well.

    4. seweatherman1 says:

Well said bay and brian. I do believe that the #15 jersey will be in great number in the stands this weekend. I just wish that the game was on here in SW Florida.

    5. royalbroncofan1 says:

I know my daughter will be wearing her #15 next weekend at Seahawks game. I’ll stick to my #92 !

    6. baylinorcrush says:

Same here in Austin, won’t be able to watch the game live, will have to wait until Sunday noon to watch it on the NFLN replay, and for that reason I won’t be on Saturday pm thru Sunday pm so my thoughts about the game won’t be influenced by everyone else’s opinions, includind the DP or any sports network because I don’t even want to know the score before I watch it.

    7. timmah says:

orton is all for himself and I wish we would have traded him for that reason and that reason only. He will do what is good for him not the team… he is only here to pick up his check do the necessary work to be a starting qb in practice… but when a real defense shows up like the steelers and the ravens and the jets he folds instead of stepping up like a man and taking a hit for the team just to give a chance to win… I really hope we can run the ball well because when great defenses come to town that is where fox is going to put his trust… if you guys want a win now cinereo TT is your qb he will learn in a couple of games but some of those games he will win and some he will lose but as the season goes on he will start to figure things out.. gel with offensive line and gel with the recievers and will win more than lose and maybe even get us to the playoffs but that is just one mans opinion..

    8. baylinorcrush says:

I wonder how the percentage of Tebow fans breaks down between men and women… I bet it’s safe to say more girls are into Tebow than Orton, and same with Quinn as I remember when we first got him, girls went gaga over him, and then switch their alliance to Tebow when he got here. So women, is Orton not good looking?

    9. baylinorcrush says:

He is a bear of a man, haha.

    10. seweatherman1 says:

      timmah,
You are re-opening a can of worms that is months old. We have all said that very same thing, and more. BUT…the powers to be have put their faith in Orton. So be it. Orton it is. The only thing will be just like last year, and I said this before, whoever comes in as his backup will do so without the luxury of having had many, if any, reps with the starters in practice or previous games. Last year Tebow took over those last games only having “mental reps” in practice.

    11. baylinorcrush says:

So rbf1, you’re not going to the Buffalo game?

    12. royalbroncofan1 says:

No – other family members will be attending this game. I decided to pass. I do want to see the Seahawks game as starters will have more playing time..

    13. brian_schneider says:

I think I figured it out. The reason Orton isn’t mobile is because he’s got a “ball and chain” around his ankle already. That’s also the reason Orton isn’t as appealing to the ladies because he’s already taken. LOL!

    14. baylinorcrush says:

I would definitely pick the 3rd one against the Seahawks too, good move, specially that this Buffalo one will come with EXTRA vanilla since we will play them again on Christmas eve. Tomorrow could very well be the boriest game of the season, on both sides. I have no idea who made that preseason schedule…..

    15. baylinorcrush says:

Studesville probably had something to do with it…

    16. killerkod says:

I agree………..the game will probably be a snoozefest………but still interesting to watch the players and how they’re coming along. I hope I can pick it up on TV somewhere……….football just isn’t the same when you’re just listening to it on satellite radio.

    17. killerkod says:

It’s gonna be really interesting to see the broncos play at Ralph Wilson Stadium in late December……….that’s gonna be a cold one I bet!

    18. royalbroncofan1 says:

Yeah – good point extra vanilla tomorrow.
We’ve been playing the Cardinals every year in pre-season and Cowboys every other year or so. (regional Teams).
I’ve noticed that also with other regional Teams around the Country.
Usually only one Team that travels long distance in pre-season.
      (Us or Them).

    19. killerkod says:

Exactly 24 days to countdown until Broncos football officially begins……..it’s gonna be the longest 24 days of my life!!!! UGH!

Oh well, something to look forward to at least!

    20. Randy2191 says:

Hah you would think Marcell Darius or however you spell that dudes name made the schedule remember he wanted to get back at Denver now he has two shots at it

    21. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Wow sky is truly falling huh. I don’t think we have reached the point where we should worry about Tebow yet. I feel there is still a level of commitment to him. Heck both Quinn and Ortons contracts are done at the end of this year if i recall …. i guess we could sign em back but i doubt it.

I am pro quinn however … said it alot in the offseason that I hope he gets good and gets a chance to land with another team … a fair shake. And im glad he has improved this year. Tebow will be fine come game time. I Gaurantee u he does well tommorow.

As far as Tebow mania … i am part of it … not just cuz its tebow, but because i believe in him and when I like a player (like the former 15) I like em alot … but I can also survive if they get traded (like the former 15) … Doesn’t necessarily mean I agree but just is what it is. Its all about the Broncos … I will just hate if, like hillis, Tebow doesn’t get a fair shake before he is traded and beast somewhere else, leaving us fans face palming cuz we knew it all along but apparently the “experts” in the front office knew better. They really should listen to fans more even tho fans make alot of emotional decisions … when they are passionate about a player … they are sometimes right.

      Later days, TRB out…

    22. brian_schneider says:

Fans make emotional decisions because a long time ago sports used to be about the fans and emotions.

Franchises make economic decisions because no sports is nothing but a money making business.

Who’s money are they using..that’s right the fan’s money. So they’re making finacial decisions with our money so I think we have the right to be emotional.

    23. brian_schneider says:

      *now sports….”

    24. orangecrushgrl says:

Bay, as a female I would have to admit Quinn is by far the better looking but by far not the better QB….have u read Tebow’s book? There r parts that r boring but it really makes u want to pull for the guy just bcuz of his determination, hard work, as well as his work ethic….oh, and Orton is not bad looking ;)

    25. brian_schneider says:

I honestly don’t care what they look like. Our QB could look like Sloth from the Goonies as long as we can play well as a team.

      “Sloth…love Super Bowl!” LOL

    26. 1nOnlyTRB says:

The funny thing to me about this Quinn thing is that he plays one good game on mop up duty (plus im sure he doing well in practice even tho he always seems to throw an INT) … And everyone wants to start the … Maybe Quinn is back. Finally where he should be. That ND pedigree. This and That. Tebow wins an actual NFL game … they shred the guy. Like it or not, they have decided for watever reason that because the kid is unconventional … even when he plays good or wins … its luck. But because Quinn has the prototypical form and stance and pocket presence … they’d rather believe its possible for him to succeed than Tebow. Its just the way it is. Anyway, If a team is interested, and I hope this hype gets them interested (like with Kolb) … We may not be able to get a kings randsom for him but at this point I would take like a 5th or 4th round pick lol. But honestly, we get somethign, and Quinn gets something I also want him to get … A shot. TRB

    27. 1nOnlyTRB says:

For the record I don’t mean to downplay the improvement in Quinns play. His poise in the pocket in Dallas was impressive but thats the poise of a vet … u don’t learn that overnight, which is why Tebow doesn’t have it yet. Also because he is unconventional … few rookie guys have that poise and the ones that do, from day one u can tell they are gonna be good. But Quinn has stepped his game up, definitely, Its just that with everyone high on quinn … I like to be the other guy … I do that alot with people, cuz I was high on quinn when others were down on him lol. TRB

    28. baylinorcrush says:

Thanks crushgirl for giving me your perspective since there is no way I can tell an uggly dude from another, haha.

    29. eternalorangeandblue says:

well. i gotta say with the locker room now starting to show support for Quinn its making me wonder how much faith this organization has in Tebow. Yes its good that all of our qb’s are doing well because we are strengthening the value of all three by letting them compete and become beter players. Still, i would like to see a future with Tebow as our guy even though I am a KO supporter for the moment. (he’ll be gone by next year even if he has his best year. which I think he is poised to have. That way we get extremely good value for him like a first round pick.) Good luck to all 3 of our signal callers! May the best man win. and not just a job but some games a s well!

    30. drice97 says:

Eternal – Not sure if I read what you said wrong, but if Orton has a phenomenal year, he only increases value for HIMSELF. We get NOTHING, unless we trade him mid-year. This is the final year of his deal. If we carry him all year long, and don’t trade him and don’t re-sign him, he walks to the highest bidder, and we’re out of luck.

    31. baylinorcrush says:

TRB, about Quinn’s progress maybe being real, this was my clue:

He first sought counsel from longtime NFL and college offensive coordinator Paul Hackett. “Paul believes in developing a quarterback first as a human being,” Quinn said. “How you live off the field is as important as what you do on the field. He was really good as far as helping me with the psychology of playing quarterback.”

And why it rung a bell with me, back in the early 80s when I was on the world speed skiing tour, a couple of racers made tremendous improvements in their results and one got talking to me about the sports psychologist he’d been working with and the results were obvious. Build yourself a strong foundation in the head and if you have the talent, the rest will follow and this is what I saw in Quinn reading this article which has been backed up by his practices and game against Dallas. Bottom line I’m not just talking out of a feel or anything like that, there is more to it this time around in my opinion.

Well that was an insight into the world of sports athletes don’t usually like talking about, don’t underestimate the power of sports psychology, it was a revelation to me over 25 years ago, but it must be much more readily available now for those who seek it, and I would recommend it to anyone involve in top athletic endeavors. Not that Hacket is a sports psychologist but he sounds as if he learned the value of it somewhere, lucky for Quinn.

    32. killerkod says:

It could be pee-wee herman under centre and I wouldn’t care, as long as he was winning us games………….

Now there’s a looker for you crushgirl! hahaha

I don’t favor one guy over the other……….and while I’m extremely emotionally involved with my Broncos, I am not nearly as emotionally involved with who starts at QB. Whoever plays the best is fine by me.

I remember a thing that nfl.com did a while back about some players looking like celebritiies……….and they said Orton looks like Dave Grohl……..and he kinda does! lol Orton is far from “My Hero” though.

    33. baylinorcrush says:

So Brian when you watch women beach volleyball, you really don’t care what the girls look like? LOL, that’s why I was asking females about it…. So are you really a female who plays on the golf tour then? LMAO…

    34. danso says:

I’ll be at the game and boring or not it will be exciting to me to watch the Broncos from my new season ticket seats on the club level. Yahooo!

    35. baylinorcrush says:

Wow, season tickets!!! Like how many years were you on the waiting list or have they become available because of the cba mess?

    36. danso says:

Premium seating-must sell separately. I inquired a year ago, they called me about Feb with availability. Waiting list gets you in nosebleed section first then keep moving up.

    37. baylinorcrush says:

Glad to see some of us still doing good in this fledging economy, good for you.

    38. stevecan2 says:

It strikes me as highly ironic that what we have is a true 3rd round QB not starting his second year against two prior starting QB’s in the NFL. A former starting QB that has always shown promise in Preseason and practice in his 4th year in the league. Who in college played under Charlie Weise. Was a first round pick in 2007. Started and played for a dismal NFL organization under Crennel and Mangini who are no longer HC’s in the league. Now 4 years later he is once again playing well in the Preseason and in practice and looks promising enough to play QB2 for a team coming off of a 4-12 season. Sorry but even with my hope for Brady Quinn to get his shot at starting in the NFL again, these simple truths just do not point to any direction other than… He looks to be a career back up QB.

Now enter Tim Tebow. Going into his second year in the NFL, is being beat out by a starting NFL QB and now possibly Brady Quinn. And here we are acting as if the sky has fallen, well it has not. We are going into our second preseason game. We have 19 games left, and it will be all left out on the field. Last season, 3-10 without and 1-2 with Tebow. Ironically this overrated, never going to be good enough in the NFL won under a interim coach with plays being called by an offensive coordinator for the first time ever on a team only capable of winning 3 games with the more “conventional” approach. Wins and Losses are what matters to the fan base, as according to prior posts on this site, Tebow was able to produce 25% of our wins last season, while only starting for 18% of them.

    39. MANDIEGO says:

anyone know where I can watch the game online?
