2011 Training Camp – Day 20: P.M. Blog

August 16th, 2011 - 7:44pm by Max Henson

A few quick notes from the Broncos’ Tuesday evening walkthrough session:

  • Newly-acquired linebacker Alvin Bowen was out on the field wearing No. 47.
  • The offense spent a good amount of time at the start of the session working in the red zone, with many plays starting from inside the 10-yard line.
  • The offense then changed directions and went through a good chunk of running plays. Later, the defense worked on its dime package.
  • Knowshon Moreno continued to show off his dance moves during the walkthrough session and Brandon Lloyd joined in this time, which brought out some laughs.
  • During the special teams portion of practice, the Broncos’ punt return and field goal block unit got some work.
  • Quarterbacks Tim Tebow and Adam Weber played catch during the special teams session but they weren’t the only ones. Offensive linemen were showing off their passing abilities once again Tuesday, as Chris Kuper and J.D. Walton tossed the ball around and even worked on catching with one hand and getting two feet down near the sideline. The two seemed to be quite happy with their pass-catching performances.
  • Correction: The Broncos are back on the practice field tomorrow afternoon at 2:20 p.m. and the padded session is open to the public.

Easily the most unproductive practice so far lol

this was just fun time at dove valley i agree totally bay

    4. baylinorcrush says:

Maybe they weren’t even wearing clothes, for fun, so no pictures, LOL.

    5. brian_schneider says:

Did anyone else know that Matt Prater is arrested on DUI charges on August 2nd?

    6. sndvl says:

At least there were NO INJURIES reported!

Sports Authority at Mile High. Hmmm? Whatever
As long as we get some magic back. (but that won’t change if it’s still the same wine drinking crowd. No offense to wine drinkers. Just a metaphor.)

    7. Broncos Born & Raised says:

At least the new name has something to do with sports. In a perfect world it would just be called Mile High Stadium. GO BRONCOS

    8. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I had actually kinda gotten used to invesco lol … sigh … I would prefer just plain Mile High but watever. Money talks and they are paying so there u go. Chicago still got soldier field, Wisconsin still got Lambeau field, but we are watered down with sponsors … Its fine I guess lol.

Oh yea, definitely seem slike one big party … woulda laughed if there was an injury report.
[Knowshon Moreno was hurt while doing "the dougie" during warm ups. Tebow and Weber got a charlie horse while playing grab a$$ and were held out of practice for precautionary reasons] lol

      TRB out…

    9. killerkod says:

Not much to really comment on from this blog. Seems as though Fox gave them the evening off and had a little fun. Probably not a bad thing. But I’m sure it’ll be back to work tomorrow for the padded practice. Let’s hope no one else gets injured!

Any further word on Decker’s foot?

    10. killerkod says:

I don’t really like the new name of the stadium. Stupid sponsorship. Why can’t it just be called Mile High Stadium??!!?! Now that sounds awesome!

    11. baylinorcrush says:

You guys either missed or chose to ignore the much more interesting topic at the end of last blog, oh well, it’s party time, LOL.

    12. killerkod says:

about the cap room bay? lol Just as well to not think about it too much…………it’ll just make me depressed to know that we won’t be opening up the pocket book for a couple years. I guess it’s more important that ever to develop what we have now.

    13. baylinorcrush says:

This is a good follow up from Legwold to add up to my point on the last blog:

Other than giving defensive tackle Ty Warren a two-year contract and running back Willis McGahee a four-year deal, the Broncos haven’t shown much interest in investing in high-price veteran free agents. Coming off a 4-12 season, the Broncos want to rebuild with a younger, more athletic roster.

The Seahawks asked Tatupu to take a pay cut from his $4.5 million base salary. He wouldn’t accept a pay cut, so the Seahawks released him.

“the Broncos haven’t shown much interest in investing in high-price veteran free agents.” That is the key element. When we used to argue over who the Broncos should pick up in FA, Mebane, Franklin, Reggie Bush etc… I said all along forget it, that they would not go for top tier players because of the money and now I’m convinced that it will be the case until at least 2013 because the teams are not obliged to spend a minimum of the salary cap like they will then, see last blog discussion.

    14. baylinorcrush says:

Well, those are the important factors that shape a team, having my head in the sand about it is frankly not any advantage to my football IQ, just saying. And I have been a Bronco fan long enough not to be depressed any longer, many mountains and valleys, and even some underground explorations, LOL.

    15. killerkod says:

Well, I hope that EFX have designed some sort of plan to deal with that over next couple seasons. I’m sure Mr. Bowlen has laid out how it’s gonna be spending wise.

I also think EFX will put much more thought and emphasis on drafting properly. That’s been a downfall of ours for a while…..and some of the good ones we did draft are no longer here. The great teams of the league know how to draft and balance it with FA/trades.

    16. baylinorcrush says:

Whether this has any truth to it or not I don’t really care but it’s just like I never liked the U, I followed Florida State when I lived in Florida, the U was always arrogant and when they started falling down off their mountain top I couldn’t be happier, it probably has something to do with why I never really liked DJ:

Nevin Shapiro, a former Miami booster who is serving a 20-year prison sentence for masterminding a $930 million Ponzi scheme, told Yahoo Sports he provided impermissible benefits to 72 of the university’s football players and other athletes between 2002 and 2010.

Shapiro said he gave money, cars, yacht trips, jewelry, televisions and other gifts to a list of players, including Broncos D.J. Williams, Willis McGahee and Orlando Franklin as well as Vince Wilfork, Jon Beason, Antrel Rolle, Devin Hester and the late Sean Taylor.

Shapiro also claimed he put out bounties on specific players, including former Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, and paid for nightclub outings, sex parties, restaurant meals and in one case, an abortion for a woman impregnated by a player. One former Miami player, running back Tyrone Moss, told Yahoo Sports he accepted $1,000 from Shapiro around the time he was entering college.

“Hell yeah, I recruited a lot of kids for Miami,” Shapiro told Yahoo Sports. “With access to the clubs, access to the strip joints. My house. My boat. We’re talking about high school football players. Not anybody can just get into the clubs or strip joints. Who is going to pay for it and make it happen? That was me.”

    17. brian_schneider says:

The name thing is purely about money. Heck, if I paid them enough money I could have my name on the stadium. We just have to get used to the stadium having some sort of sponsorship name on it. As long as they keep the “Mile High” in there it still keeps the fans content. As soon as it becomes “Sports Authority Stadium” or something similar that’s when the stadium loses its idenity. Its been a long time since any Mile High Magic has happened.

    18. brian_schneider says:

Can the league or NCAA prosecute any of the current NFL palyers or revoke any awards given to them? Like stripping Bush’s Heisman Trophy…

    19. baylinorcrush says:

Don’t get me wrong, I always say that rebuilding starts with the draft, youth and athleticism you usually can’t find in FA, the only ingredients for long term, but the reason I think it is so important not to ignore the money part is that we Bronco fans are in for a loooong rebuild, playoffs not gonna happen this year and probably won’t happen next year, I see now 2013 as our first legitimate shot, that’s how important all that info is to me, call me materialistic, haha.

    20. brian_schneider says:

Well I think it is somewhat smart of Fox and Co. to not spend all the money to pick up high priced FA. That’s also why I think that Fox and Co. aren’t showing all their cards. They want this “win now” attitude but their draft and FA aquisistions seem more like they have a bigger plan. I don’t know maybe its just me but I think Fox and Co. want to go with Tebow but having Orton sit on the bench will probably cause too much controversary in the locker room.

    21. killerkod says:

bay, you’re all about the benjamins! hahaha

While I remain optimistic and hopeful, I’m also a realist as well and agree with your outlook. Anyone who thinks that just because he’s elway, he can come in an turn this team around in one year is wearing a permanant pair of rose coloured glasses.

I think EFX has what is takes to turn this team around…….but it ain’t gonna happen in 1 season. A combination of current player development, a couple more drafts and some smart FA signings and trades and we will be a competitive team in a couple years.

I have the patience………jeeesh, I have been waiting ever since 99 for this team to get back to being SB contendors. lol

    22. brian_schneider says:

Patience seems hard to come by now days. Everyone wants instant gratification…..everyone “expects” instant gratification. I’m with you guys in that it may take a couple seasons to get this mess figured out, and I’m willing to wait and see what happens.

However you still have those fans who want to “sell the farm” and have “knee jerk reactions.” I think I might be getting wiser as I age…

    23. killerkod says:

Don’t get me wrong………I wanna win NOW! But I’d rather see a plan and vision to make this team better for the long term and I’m willing to give this new regime a chance to make that vision come to fruition.

    24. baylinorcrush says:

About the new name, blah, could care less, lived there and breathed the air at the real Mile High and it will never be duplicated, so I’m blessed, this is more what it has come down to now:

To those who never did warm to the Broncos’ home stadium as Invesco Field at Mile High, raise those $8 plastic cups of beer. Invesco Field is no more.

      8 dollars a beer!!!!!

      But it goes on:

“What this does is I think it brings this building to life,” Broncos president Joe Ellis said during the district board meeting that was held in the West Club of Invesco/Sports Authority Field. “My concern is I want our fans to have a stadium experience like they have at Coors Field,” said Jack Hilbert, a stadium-district board member representing Douglas County. “When you go to Coors Field, you have the playground out in left field for kids. You have the dining area. You’ve got the food-court area. There’s a lot there when you can walk around. When you come here, there’s not as much what I can call the fan experience. I think Sports Authority will do that for this place.”

But what will it do for the team?

Seems like that all gets lost in the shuffle.

Affordable beer, plenty of toilets, loud noise and hard knock football is all I ever wanted.

Today’s corporate wine sipping crowd is enough to make me nostalgic about the good old days.

I rather watch the game at the sports bar with my Bronco buddies where we are allowed to be loud and stand up and cheer and can drink affordable beers anyday!

Can’t really believe I said that but there must be some truth to it, many of the stories I read from long time Bronco fans about their experiences at Invesco are less than inviting to say the least, of course the newbies who have never known anything else love it.

      Anyway progress they call it….

    25. brian_schneider says:

I was only able to go to one game at Mile High Stadium. It was with my Dad and I was about 8 or 9 years old. Greatest memory I have of a day spent with my father.

    26. brian_schneider says:

That’s why sometimes it isn’t neccessarily the name of the stadium but the memories you create when you’re there.

    27. killerkod says:

It has always been one of my dreams to go see a Broncos game at Mile High……….and I plan on making that a reality within the next couple of years. That will mark my first live NFL game and I want to do while watching our team at home……..regardless of what the staduim is called!

    28. baylinorcrush says:

Brian, I took my stepson when he was 8 year old to the “Fumble” game, 10th row up 5 yard line, the crowd chanted super bowl, super bowl… for like 30 minutes straight after the end of the game before even leaving their seats, you think he remembers that?

    29. baylinorcrush says:

The name has nothing to do with it, but the stadium surely does, fans were so much closer to the field at Mile High, not to mention the crazyness of the south stands, it was folklore, now it’s politically correct, but it’s still the Broncos, but the experience just will never be as great, unless you’re the wine sipping crowd kind, LOL..

    30. brian_schneider says:

You can guarantee that he remembers that!

I’m not a “flashy” guy, I am your normal average guy. By that I mean I don’t travel around the world a lot and I’m not so rich I can just do whatever I want. Growing up we never had a lot of money so the things we did seemed that much more fun and memorable.

Seems like kids today got their ear buds in and iPhones going to actual realize when they have opportunities to make those kinds of memories they just take pictures and post to facebook or whatever. Even though that is a good way of sharing and remembering it seems like today people are so “connected” that they’re “disconnected.”

    31. baylinorcrush says:

I don’t think Coop ever reads any blog but his own but if he does I want to apologize for bad mouthing his U of Miami, LOL.

    32. baylinorcrush says:

Former Bills No. 1 pick Aaron Maybin en route to Jets to take physical, source says. Barring snag, will sign today w/ Jets.

    33. killerkod says:

Not sure why the Jets would pick this guy up……….he’s been a bust since day 1? I know Rex Ryan is good, but he doesn’t have magical powers……….OR DOES HE?!?!? hahaha

    34. brian_schneider says:

Didn’t you see him when the Jets got penalized for too many man on the field. His headset “magically” flew off so fast I was amazed how fast it flew off….ooooh…ahhhh…its magic. LOL.

    35. 1nOnlyTRB says:

The FA thing is of no real surprise after the expensive McD error. Not a big deal either cuz gotta get young. I do however draw da line at young talent like mebane or other talented rookies after their 4 yrs are up. But where I draw a line as a fan don’t matter to them lol. I believe this team can turn around fast afterall fox has pulled it off before and our team is not completely without talent. It may be doubtful for this year especially because we had no offseason but next year watchout for dat playoff run if they keep drafting like this. I came to the states in 97 so I came into football at a high period for da broncos (thx to good ol siblin rivalry for those who remember) lol. Past 10 or so yrs have blown by and while we haven’t won the superbowl I’ve enjoyed watching bronco football so I can wait

    36. armadillo_orton says:

I just re-watched last season’s Tebow San Diego game last night. I noticed the 5 wr formation and the expected Tebow run up the middle. Hopefully we will see a pass out of that look against Buffalo. After watching the game, we had a couple of drives that ended on bad play calls. We should have actually won that game. Yes Tebow is raw, but he made some clutch passes to B. Lloyd on the sideline when the game was on the line. For all those haters that didn’t like last weeks redzone scramble, there were a couple of plays against San Diego where he completed those passes. (one play across his body to Graham). He can play and anyone who doubts him should watch the San Diego game all over again. The whole Orton gives us a better chance to win is complete B/S cause Orton folds when the going gets tough. Tebow against San Diego did a double fake on a play action (one to the RB and then faked himself running before hitting Decker in the endzone)(yeah like Orton could do that). With a 5 star defense Tebow would be unbeatable. Are there throws that he needs to work on? Sure, but a good OC can work around that. (at least call a few roll-outs). Tebow on a roll-out would drive teams crazy. And no one sets the screen pass up better than Tebow. He waits until the last second before he throws (usually ends up getting hit). Most QB’s pass the ball early so as to avoid the contact ( Orton ). So everyone TAKE THE REDPILL and unplug yourself from the media Tebow matrix of hate. Just watch the Houston & San Diego game with an open mind, and then you’ll see what I see. We all know the media stinks. They gave us Rob Johnson over Doug Flutie. They shoved Joey Harrington, & crying Leaf down our throats. Tebow completed over 65% (with single digit picks) each year in the SEC. (which dominate college football right now). Haters wake up and stop being parrots for the media. Go watch some film and make YOUR OWN OPINIONS.

    37. killerkod says:

I have my own opinion……….Tebow has some great upside, but I don’t think he’s ready to be a starter in this league yet. He reminds me of a raw version of Phillip Rivers (although I can’t stand him I have to respect his QB ability) He has a great arm, can scramble and throw out of the pocket and when he does throw in the pocket, it just looks awkward.

Once Tebow is able to become more accurate in the pocket, I think his game will improve dramatically. He has so many other intangibles. But I do think the Broncos brass are doing the right thing and letting Orton take the reins for now. Key words being FOR NOW.

Tebow will get his shot……in due time. And I think he’ll be a better QB because of it.

    38. BeastFromEast92 says:

I think Tebow is ready now!!!!
but I am not the coach, and I don’t get to make the calls!!!

      ITS TEBOW TIME!!!!!

even tho it ain’t gonna happen!

    39. royalbroncofan1 says:

      Bill Williamson at espn writes:
“Former Denver Broncos coach Josh McDaniels is enjoying his role as the Rams’ offensive coordinator. I’m sure many Denver fans are also enjoying the fact that McDaniels is in St. Louis”.

Gee Bill, that’s really insightful of you… lol!!

    40. brian_schneider says:

Tebow may or may not be ready but I’m ready to see what he can do.

    41. killerkod says:

I’m so torn on the subject.

On one hand, if Tebow is the future and we’re in a rebuilding phase where we probably won’t be overly competitive for another couple years, then I say put him out there and at least let him grow with real game experience.

But if he isn’t, and EFX has a plan we’re all unaware of, then put in Orton, who does give us a better chance to wins games now.

Whoever is out there, I will be supportive, but critical as well, dependig on their play.

    42. sndvl says:

About our cap #s- I won’t be mad if Bowlen doesn’t spend it. We’ve had way too many FA busts. That trend has been going on for too long. Depending on the severity of Ty Warrens injury, you can add another name to the list of Dale Carter, Daryl Gardner, Travis Henry, Jamal Williams, Jarvis Green, Sam Adams just to name a few.
Id rather see that money spent on Clady and others who are on our team. Instead of watching them walk the likes of Ryan Harris, Dominique Foxworth, Reggie Hayward, Bertrand Berry and Justin Bannan.
As far as the 8 dollar beers at the stadium! Since I won’t be spending any money on them this season- it gives me plenty of time to save for next year. That way I’ll be able to afford 4 or 5 next season!

    43. killerkod says:

lol sndvl…………at first glance I thought you wrote crap #s. Kinda fitting as well though……lol

    44. Broncobet says:

There’s nothing wrong with the guys having a little fun while also working very hard;Fox is strong enough that he can afford some lax rules unlike the last %#$@!@#$ with the Napolean complex . The naming of the stadium is also a good thing,I never once called it Invesco,it is always Mile High but we need the home field (best in the league) advantage back. The more money Pat Bowlen can earn gives more leeway on spending. If we haven’t had real poor luck with injuries it sure seems that we have.Sure, we know how many GB had, that just makes it worse that they are so deep they could afford it. In my little world of Bronco colored glasses I think both Warren and Thomas could come back healthy and in the meantime their replacements have gotten that much better. It is possible you can’t be sure till the swelling goes down (I had the pectoral rip from an egg beater on a diamond trail at Deer Park,I didn’t get proper care and it’s permanently weaker ).Go Broncos!!

    45. O&BinCostaRica says:

@armadillo_orton Nice post fellow fan. The media is comprised of biased liars and subjective morons. Yesterday they were all about how great Cam Newton is despite his awkward mechanics, slow reads and accuracy problems… sound familiar? But he is great right? Remember the praises about Jamarcus, and of course the ones in your post? Fact of the matter is, no one can predict the future and this is a best guess scenario. No one gave 2 cents for TD, they wouldn’t even THINK of drafting Rod Smith and of course, Sharpe was too small to play TE and too slow to play WR…. Thank you for posting YOUR opinion and standing by it.

    46. BeastFromEast92 says:

      AMEN to that!!!!!!!!

    47. armadillo_orton says:

      ORTON WARNING
Let’s get excited for marginal football with Orton flopping around on the ground. He’s in a contract year. Do you really think he is going to lay his body on the line for a win? I don’t think so. Did you watch the Cowboy’s game? Pass rusher coming off the edge in his face, Orton throws ball into players arms. Please. Why are we wasting time with him when he is a free agent after this season? That is insane. I would rather roll with Quinn since he’s in his last year and we need to know whether or not he’s a keeper. If Quinn fails then we roll with Tebow. If they both fail we trade up and get LUCK or the next favorite qb flavor of the month. Face it Kyle will go 6-10 or 7-9 at best. Then what do we do? I know what fox would do, he will resign that piece of trash so we can keep spinning our wheels in the sand. That is insane. That is what cost Romeo Crennel his job in Cleveland. How about Miami? How about all the other teams that keep rolling out average qb’s scared to go against the grain. Remember Jimmy Johnson? He went to Dallas cleaned house and started some young players that turned into greatness. He suffered his 1st year, but they grew up. I would rather go 1-15 and build a foundation for greatness than 6-10 with a house built on the sand of mediocrity. Let’s find out what Quinn and Tebow can do NOW. Rather than lose one or both of then next year. WAKE UP FANS. Don’t fall for all the win now nonsense, Orton is not the guy. I know you are all on the bandwagon but let’s keep it real. TRADE ORTON NOW!!!!! PLAY QUINN/TEBOW!!!!! Let’s build greatness, and not end up like Cleveland. Orton is playing for a contract. He will not lay his body on the line. DO WE REALLY WANT TO WATCH THAT? Hasn’t the past 2 years have been enough? Please give me the REDPILL and wake me from this madness.

    48. sndvl says:

I think you need the blue”chill”pill armadillo.
Orton is our starter. For now! Deal with it.
Matter of fact, it looks like Tebow is fighting for the backup position. I’d be more concerned he winds up #3, than if he starts opening day.

      Just sayin

    49. broncofan9137 says:

BAY: I agree with you about old Mile High Stadium. Those days were alot of fun, being rowdy & drinking alot of beer. I went to acouple of games at Investco & it didn’t feel the same. I am from Colorado but had to move to Ca. back in 1977. Sure wish I was back in Colorado. Your right about the Corporate a__h____. They never stay seated to watch the game. They are always getting up to go get something to eat. If they want to eat why don’t they go to damn restaurant & sip their wine there.

    50. Wild Dog says:

I agree with sndvl on the Tebow issue. A few days ago, Quinn got a lot of reps with the 1st team O and Tebow has yet to do that. Quinn may be 2nd on the depth chart by Saturday.

Personnally, I think Tebow was a great “running” college quarterback surronded by a lot of the best NCAA football players out there and they, underline THEY, won the BCS Championship. Not many running quarterbacks have EVER made it big in the NFL. Tebow has a shot because of his tremendous drive, but Elway and Fox know that it is NOT Tebow Time.
