2011 Training Camp – Day 20: A.M. Blog

August 16th, 2011 - 12:13pm by Gray Caldwell

Let’s get right into it.

ROLL CALL
After practice, Head Coach John Fox announced that the team waived linebacker A.J. Jones yesterday and released running back LenDale White this morning. Ty Warren did not practice due to a triceps strain, Marcus Thomas did not practice with a pectoral sprain, Demaryius Thomas continued to sit out with an Achilles injury, Richard Quinn sat out with a knee injury, Stanley Daniels was out with an ankle injury and Syd’Quan Thompson was still out with a groin injury.

Ronnell Brown and Eric Decker did not finish practice. Decker left due to a foot injury.

We’ll have more on the injuries and transactions in today’s top story, coming shortly on DenverBroncos.com.

LINE ‘EM UP
The starting defensive tackles Tuesday were Kevin Vickerson and Brodrick Bunkley.

Behind the starting corps of D.J. Williams, Joe Mays and Von Miller, the second-string linebackers are Mario Haggan, Nate Irving and Wesley Woodyard.

DRILLS
Two of the more interesting drills of the day were essentially the reverse of the team sessions we’re used to seeing. Instead of the offense being down a score, the unit was up and had to run the clock out with 1:54 remaining. The defense had one timeout.

First up was Kyle Orton. After two running plays, the quarterback found Eric Decker on a screen pass for a big first down, allowing the clock to run and giving Orton the opportunity to take a knee in the victory formation to seal the “win.”

Next was Tim Tebow. On the very first play, Brandon Minor found a big hole in the line and picked up a first down. The defense called a timeout, but Tebow was still able to take three consecutive kneel-downs to seal the win for the second-team offense, as well.

After Tebow’s rep, Orton went back in for another situational drill — fourth-and-10, up a score, with four seconds left. Essentially the goal seemed to be to secure the snap, drop back and heave the ball high and out of bounds down the field to run the clock out. Tebow ran the same drill right after.

PLAYMAKERS

  • Eddie Royal had two long touchdowns from Kyle Orton during 7-on-7s — one was a long bomb in the air, the other came after the catch due to a nice move to get past Kyle McCarthy.
  • Elvis Dumervil got past Orlando Franklin on the very first play of a team drill for a sack on Orton.
  • The next play was a handoff to Knowshon Moreno, who found a hole in the line for a big gain. “Nice! Nice!” Orton yelled afterward.
  • Moreno had another big run during team drills, weaving his way through traffic to pick up substantial yardage.
  • The defense had its fair share of big plays during team drills, as Von Miller burst into the backfield to wrap up Willis McGahee, Derrick Harvey busted through the line to wrap up Lane Ball and Kevin Vickerson came on a late rush unblocked to sack Orton and later wrapped up Willis McGahee in the backfield in a red-zone drill.
  • The offense had some answers, however, especially in the red zone. Royal scored on a screen pass from Orton, Dan Gronkowski caught a pass in the middle of the end zone from Orton and D’Andre Goodwin got his hands on a touchdown from Adam Weber.
  • Brian Dawkins made his presence felt throughout team drills. After he nearly had a pick — Cassius Vaughn dove to break up the pass just before it seemingly would’ve sailed into Dawkins’ hands — he broke up the very next play by diving toward the ball. Later in the same red zone drill, he ran down Moreno as the running back was trying to turn the corner, tackling him out of bounds short of the end zone, much to the delight of his defensive teammates.
  • After Ryan McBean looked to have a sack on Brady Quinn, the play was allowed to continue, and under pressure the quarterback fired a pass to the end zone that was intercepted by Perrish Cox.
  • Jeremy Jarmon found his way into the backfield for a sack on Tebow. When he got back to the sideline, he was greeted with a high-five from Bunkley.
  • Thanks to a big block by fullback Austin Sylvester, Brandon Minor was able to find room for a long run during team drills.
  • Orton made a sliding catch of a pass thrown by Quinn. That’s receiver Greg Orton, of course.
  • QUICK HITS

  • During a tackling drill near the sideline, Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen told the linebackers, “Don’t let him go out of bounds — make him pay the toll!”
  • David Anderson, taking his reps as punt returner, turned to the sideline and joked, “Come on, Champ, you’re returning punts this year.” The Pro Bowl cornerback smiled back at him.
  • During two-on-two drills between the offensive and defensive lines, the first-string O-line held its ground, but that didn’t stop Dumervil from talking a little trash, especially to the right side of the line as Jason Hunter fought his way into the backfield.
  • Royal took first-team punt return reps.
  • DAILY JUKEBOX

  • Led Zeppelin: “Kashmir”
  • Foster the People: “Pumped Up Kicks”
  • The Black Keys: “Everlasting Light”
  • The team is back on the field tonight for a closed walkthrough practice. The next practice open to the public is tomorrow afternoon from 2:20 to 5 p.m.

Below are a couple more photos from Tuesday’s morning session.

LenDale White gone should be no surprise to anyone. Just no zip in the plays he had Thursday. RB position is starting to get intertesting. It would be nice to see Jeramiah (sp) crank it up a notch or two from his fine Thursday showing against 3rd stringers. Getting real twitchy about the game Saturday. It’s sink or swim for a lot of players.

I thought Lendale White was going to make the team

I like our LB corp. lickin my chops

    4. BIGGEST BRONCO says:

WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK OF OUR OFFENCE?

    5. BIGGEST BRONCO says:

      AND ESPECIALLY OUR DEFFENCE.

    6. baylinorcrush says:

      LB A.J. Jones gone too.

    7. baylinorcrush says:

      Gray:

“Ty Warren did not practice due to a triceps strain”

But the DP reports MRI showed a triceps tear, which is it???

    8. baylinorcrush says:

      Decker foot injury!!!!!!!

      Right back where he started!!!!!

    9. baylinorcrush –

Coach Fox said after practice, “Injury-wise, Ty Warren did not practice today, triceps strain.”

I just put Coach’s wording in the blog.

    10. baylinorcrush says:

      Wow, thanks.

    11. baylinorcrush says:

This is the very latest from Klis regarding Warren:

An MRI revealed Broncos defensive tackle Ty Warren has a partial tear in his triceps, an injury he suffered during a 9-on-7 team drill on Monday.

The Broncos are going to wait a couple of days for the swelling to subside before determining how to proceed. Because it’s not a full tear, the Broncos are clinging to hope they can put off surgery so Warren can play at some point this season. If it’s determined surgery isn’t necessary, it would take four to six weeks before Warren’s triceps tear is re-evaluated.

    12. baylinorcrush says:

I guess if you call it a strain it makes you feel better? LOL.

    13. killerkod says:

The injuries just keep piling up……..UGH!

    14. royalbroncofan1 says:

      Hope Decker will be ok.

    15. killerkod says:

Let’s just hope he stubbed his toe, or maybe an ingrown toenail? lol

    16. royalbroncofan1 says:

      This from DP:

Lowlight: Wide receiver Eric Decker joined the long list of wide receivers who have missed practice time. The second-year receiver was pulled from the field as a precautionary measure for his left foot. Decker said he expects to be back at practice on Wednesday, but it still isn’t good for a group that has already had Brandon Lloyd , Eddie Royal , Britt Davis and Matthew Willis all miss some practice time in the last week.

Can’t remember if Decker’s injury was to his left foot last season.

    17. caramelloo says:

Biggest Bronco….. All that’s ever talked about is the Offense! The same Offense that settles for FG’s in the redzone. We hardly hear about the Defense making a lot of plays or just dominating the Offense. As fas as the injuries….. they are starting to become the same old broken record.

First we need to stop signing injured players based on what they did and/or could do. Decker was a chance just like Thomas. Warren was injured and failed a physical. I guess we just have to wait and see.

    18. brian_schneider says:

If there is ever a time for the younger guys to step it up, this is the time.
Decker and Thomas both had questionable foot injuries in college and I know that was a big question leading up to and during the draft. I think we’re finding out the answers slowly but surely.

    19. royalbroncofan1 says:

      Also from DP:

      Position battle: Safety Positions

Rookie second-round pick Rahim Moore continues to work alongside Brian Dawkins as the first-team free safety, but the competition isn’t over.

Today, second-year safety Kyle McCarthy got some first-team snaps during 7-on-7 passing drills and in some drills focused on stopping the run. In the second-team base defense, McCarthy was still in at safety, alongside rookie Quinton Carter. That likely means 2009 draft picks Darcel McBath and David Bruton are on the roster bubble, hoping to secure spots because of special-teams play. Bruton might have an edge there because he has been the top special-teams tackler over the last two years and is the faster gunner on the roster.

    20. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I know lendale lacked zip but we are not exactly bursting at the seams when it comes to RB … I woulda waited for him to redeem himself but I guess he just really did not look good in practice. Still hoping we can get Noel Divine or something. I just want someone with speed. That was fannin but we lost him.

      side note:

“It’s John Beck’s turn as Redskins starting QB. He starts Washington’s next preseason game.”

Go Shanny. Thats how u have a QB competition. Give fair chances to all. i suppose thats a luxury we cannot afford. Later days, TRB

    21. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I find it hard to believe McBath is playing so bad. The kid is a good tackler and pretty good in coverage. Still remember when he picked off Peyton. The thing is putting McCarthy ahead of him as a FS, just play rush downs still means what I said, McCarthy can play the box but not so much coverage. Which sounds like a SS, so why he is ahead of McBath as SS is beyond me. I guess they are just trying to find away to incorparate him if need be. Run stopping is definitely a desired trait on the broncos D. TRB

    22. broncosfreak30 says:

Yea things aren’t looking good at all with all of these injuries. We seemed to be doing good on the injury issue and then it all hit the fan today. Decker, Warren, and Thomas all suffering injuries. Hope we bring in at least one more big time DT for depth. We’ve only gotten done with one preseason game so hopefully we’ll have some luck and wont suffer anymore serious injuries. We need DT depth REALLY bad now!!

    23. brian_schneider says:

I have a sneaking suspicion that this may be Dawkins’ last year. I think after this year, he’ll sign a 1-day contract with the Eagles and retire. The Broncos are definitely ready to young at the safety positions.

    24. Atwater4HOF says:

A partial tear is great news considreing I feared he had the complete tear. As I said yesterday the complete tear is season ending. The partial is 2-4 weeks. Thomas and Warren should both miss about the same amount of time and will hopefully be back by the Raiders game.

Decker is not an injury prone receiver. The injury he had his senior year was the only time he had injury issues in college. Hopefully he’ll be ready to roll Saturday

    25. Atwater4HOF says:

Maybe not so optomistic on Warren now that I’ve read more articles (I’ve been out all day) From what I read yesterday on partial tears 2-4 weeks seemed to be the timetable but these reports don’t seem to mirror that thought process. Would be quite a blow to lose him

    26. Atwater4HOF says:

Somehow I missed the post from the DP on the 4-6 week before evaluation. Bummer

    27. broncofan9137 says:

Bay. Tear &/or strain it doesn’t matter the man is still hurt. I just want him back because he might be able to help us out. As far as the receivers are concerned maybe we should draft or trade for tougher receivers, we seam to have a bunch of panzy receivers. Some let me know if I spelled -panzy correctly.

    28. broncofan9137 says:

I got so damn concerned on how to spell panzy I for how to spell someone.

    29. baylinorcrush says:

Why care about spelling when you don’t care about the severity of injuries, LOL.

    30. sndvl says:

It’s pansy. I like the Z in it though. More appealing to the eye. We seem to have become an injury prone panzy professional powderpuff football squad. (just joking)
Bummer to say the least with these sudden rash of injuries. I know it comes with the territory, but over the last few seasons, seems we’ve been hit harder than most.
Lack of offseason has contributed I understand. Doesn’t make the news any better. So Vickerson Bunkley, Jarmon and McBean get some quality work in. Make it count men!

    31. since 86 says:

Hey has anyone paid attention to Dennis Allen violent side? Its great! Check it out, he told our linebackers to not let players go out of bounce but to make them pay the toll! Man i love it that our coordinator has a violent side because eventually it will trickle down to our players and the legion of DOOM will be born.

      pump blue, bleed orange!

    32. alexanserg says:

Not Decker! He might be my favorite receiver. Sure hope it ain’t long term.

      Go Broncos!

    33. baylinorcrush says:

And rbf1, it is the same left foot as the one Decker has had problems with:

Minneapolis – Minnesota wide receiver Eric Decker will have surgery to fix torn ligaments in his left foot, ending his college career and complicating his status for the NFL draft.

So pulled out of practice for precaution about his left foot speaks for itself. One guy for which the short off season may be a good thing….

    34. baylinorcrush says:

      for whom, haha.

    35. baylinorcrush says:

And about McBath, I always loved the kid’s effort but let’s get real, he is the Demaryius of the D, made out of glass too, he will probably end up the odd man out as McCarthy keeps impressing and Bruton is more reliable injury wise, plus real good in ST too.

    36. royalbroncofan1 says:

      Thx bay – much appreciated.

    37. footballMANIAC says:

Haha, the maniac is back! (just joking)

I’m not surprised by White’s release; with McGahee coming in, his role as power runner was pretty much taken. Jason Hunter is looking pretty impressive, he’d better make the team. Perhaps a diamond in the rough? I hope Decker can overcome his foot problems during the preseason; he has great potential, but it is easily hidden by constant injuries (same as Demaryius Thomas, except Decker is more expendable). Tebow seems to be a paradox. Everyone who watches agrees that Orton looks much better in drills, but come gametime Tebow seemingly becomes a whole new animal. The difference between him and Orton is that Orton can’t handle pressure, he gives up the ball in some way (fumble, INT, throw out of bounds, etc.) two out of three times. Our defense certainly looks better than it did, although I was surprised we didn’t go after a big name lineman like Harris or Okoye or the guy from Seattle (Jarmon?). Ultimately, time will tell, but as of now I think the team is somewhere between last year and respectability.

    38. Atwater4HOF says:

Wow we are currently $24,302,469 over the cap according to espn. That is great and sets us up nicely to reward guys with new contracts (like Ryan Clady) when they are due. Well done Elway and company on managing the cap situation this offseason.

    39. baylinorcrush says:

Over the cap is good news? Just kidding, I know you messed up.

    40. randy2191 says:

sports authority feild at mild high.. i like that alot more than invesco feild at mile high.. and its now official i see

    41. Ohio says:

Sports Authority Field @ Mile High…………instead of saying “I’m going to Invesco” to watch the Broncos you can now say “I’m going to SAFMH to catch a Broncos game!

What ever the name of the Stadium is I just hope they bring a few Super Bowl trophies back to the SAFMH before the end of 2035!

    42. Atwater4HOF says:

Yes completely botched that lol UNDER******* the cap

    43. Atwater4HOF says:

Didn’t realize we were in that good of shape. Wish we would have forked out the extra cash for Franklin or Mebane. Nothing we can do about that now though

    44. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, the entire media had the figures wrong all along which p*ssed me off to no end when a month ago someone at MHR finally got the figures right because he took the time to read all of the new cba contract which included subparagraphs that had all the dead moneys falling off the books. Anyway, that’s old news and water under the bridge, but bottom line is if your 24 mil under figure is correct we have used 96 mil of the 120 mil cap and we are forced by rule to spend 90% of the cap, hence 109 mil, so we have 13 mil yet to spend minimum if Bowlen wants to stop there.

    45. baylinorcrush says:

Bummer, my favorite player in the news again, just kidding about favorite:

•Denver linebacker D.J. Williams has been implicated in a Yahoo Sports investigation about alleged NCAA infractions at the University of Miami. Williams joined the NFL in 2004.

I guess yahoo has nothing to do?

    46. BeastFromEast92 says:

maniac….Tebow goes into BEAST MODE when the game is on the line Orton goes into SHOCK!!!!!!!!!!!

If it comes down to McBath or the Brute,I’ll take the Brute,he’s a great gunner on ST,plus McBath is injury proned,we still have Moore,Carter,McCarthy, and Dawk!!!

Hate to see LenDale White get cut,I had very high hopes for that kid!!!

Warren’s injury is the one I fear the most, hope Vickerson and Bunkley can play the run good in the 43!!!

    47. BeastFromEast92 says:

Oh yeah “GIVE CLADY A LOOOOOOOONG CONTRACT”.

    48. baylinorcrush says:

BTW, this is the leagcy of Invesco:

The Broncos are 86-74 in the 10 seasons since Invesco Field became their stadium.

Invesco Field has hosted just two NFL playoff games — both at the end of the 2005 season.

Good riddance, hopefully the change of name will have a similar effect as when we went to navy jesrseys in 1997, one can only hope…

    49. baylinorcrush says:

BFE, Vickerson lost 25 lbs, not exactly ideal against the run, hence his demotion when bigger bodies were brought in.
