2011 Training Camp – Day 20: A.M. Blog

August 16th, 2011 - 12:13pm by Gray Caldwell

Let’s get right into it.

ROLL CALL
After practice, Head Coach John Fox announced that the team waived linebacker A.J. Jones yesterday and released running back LenDale White this morning. Ty Warren did not practice due to a triceps strain, Marcus Thomas did not practice with a pectoral sprain, Demaryius Thomas continued to sit out with an Achilles injury, Richard Quinn sat out with a knee injury, Stanley Daniels was out with an ankle injury and Syd’Quan Thompson was still out with a groin injury.

Ronnell Brown and Eric Decker did not finish practice. Decker left due to a foot injury.

We’ll have more on the injuries and transactions in today’s top story, coming shortly on DenverBroncos.com.

LINE ‘EM UP
The starting defensive tackles Tuesday were Kevin Vickerson and Brodrick Bunkley.

Behind the starting corps of D.J. Williams, Joe Mays and Von Miller, the second-string linebackers are Mario Haggan, Nate Irving and Wesley Woodyard.

DRILLS
Two of the more interesting drills of the day were essentially the reverse of the team sessions we’re used to seeing. Instead of the offense being down a score, the unit was up and had to run the clock out with 1:54 remaining. The defense had one timeout.

First up was Kyle Orton. After two running plays, the quarterback found Eric Decker on a screen pass for a big first down, allowing the clock to run and giving Orton the opportunity to take a knee in the victory formation to seal the “win.”

Next was Tim Tebow. On the very first play, Brandon Minor found a big hole in the line and picked up a first down. The defense called a timeout, but Tebow was still able to take three consecutive kneel-downs to seal the win for the second-team offense, as well.

After Tebow’s rep, Orton went back in for another situational drill — fourth-and-10, up a score, with four seconds left. Essentially the goal seemed to be to secure the snap, drop back and heave the ball high and out of bounds down the field to run the clock out. Tebow ran the same drill right after.

PLAYMAKERS

  • Eddie Royal had two long touchdowns from Kyle Orton during 7-on-7s — one was a long bomb in the air, the other came after the catch due to a nice move to get past Kyle McCarthy.
  • Elvis Dumervil got past Orlando Franklin on the very first play of a team drill for a sack on Orton.
  • The next play was a handoff to Knowshon Moreno, who found a hole in the line for a big gain. “Nice! Nice!” Orton yelled afterward.
  • Moreno had another big run during team drills, weaving his way through traffic to pick up substantial yardage.
  • The defense had its fair share of big plays during team drills, as Von Miller burst into the backfield to wrap up Willis McGahee, Derrick Harvey busted through the line to wrap up Lane Ball and Kevin Vickerson came on a late rush unblocked to sack Orton and later wrapped up Willis McGahee in the backfield in a red-zone drill.
  • The offense had some answers, however, especially in the red zone. Royal scored on a screen pass from Orton, Dan Gronkowski caught a pass in the middle of the end zone from Orton and D’Andre Goodwin got his hands on a touchdown from Adam Weber.
  • Brian Dawkins made his presence felt throughout team drills. After he nearly had a pick — Cassius Vaughn dove to break up the pass just before it seemingly would’ve sailed into Dawkins’ hands — he broke up the very next play by diving toward the ball. Later in the same red zone drill, he ran down Moreno as the running back was trying to turn the corner, tackling him out of bounds short of the end zone, much to the delight of his defensive teammates.
  • After Ryan McBean looked to have a sack on Brady Quinn, the play was allowed to continue, and under pressure the quarterback fired a pass to the end zone that was intercepted by Perrish Cox.
  • Jeremy Jarmon found his way into the backfield for a sack on Tebow. When he got back to the sideline, he was greeted with a high-five from Bunkley.
  • Thanks to a big block by fullback Austin Sylvester, Brandon Minor was able to find room for a long run during team drills.
  • Orton made a sliding catch of a pass thrown by Quinn. That’s receiver Greg Orton, of course.
  • QUICK HITS

  • During a tackling drill near the sideline, Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen told the linebackers, “Don’t let him go out of bounds — make him pay the toll!”
  • David Anderson, taking his reps as punt returner, turned to the sideline and joked, “Come on, Champ, you’re returning punts this year.” The Pro Bowl cornerback smiled back at him.
  • During two-on-two drills between the offensive and defensive lines, the first-string O-line held its ground, but that didn’t stop Dumervil from talking a little trash, especially to the right side of the line as Jason Hunter fought his way into the backfield.
  • Royal took first-team punt return reps.
  • DAILY JUKEBOX

  • Led Zeppelin: “Kashmir”
  • Foster the People: “Pumped Up Kicks”
  • The Black Keys: “Everlasting Light”
  • The team is back on the field tonight for a closed walkthrough practice. The next practice open to the public is tomorrow afternoon from 2:20 to 5 p.m.

Below are a couple more photos from Tuesday’s morning session.

I really think that for us to justify the long and expensive contract to Clady we will have to go with a right handed QB long term, just a thought.

    2. baylinorcrush says:

Colts released defensive tackle DeMario Pressley.

I know everyone in the front office will look at all the DTs released from now on.

    3. BeastFromEast92 says:

Maybe McBean can play DT better than he played NT,hopefully M.Thomas will return quickly.
If we don’t extend Clady’s contract he might decide to walk making us franchise tag him,not something a pro bowler needs done to him, just saying!

    4. baylinorcrush says:

About Pressley, slim pickings those released players….:

Claimed off waivers by Colts from Houston on February 22, 2011…originally was D5-08 choice of New Orleans….was waived on September 5, 2009…signed to Saints practice squad on September 6, 2009…signed as FA with New Orleans on November 7, 2009…was waived on September 4, 2010…signed to Saints practice squad on September 5, 2010…signed as FA with Houston on December 15, 2010…was waived on February 18, 2011.

And the carrousel turns round and round….

    5. BeastFromEast92 says:

Yeah we need depth at DT,Hell we need a starter if Warren is out and Vickerson can’t play good against the run,if we are 24 mil over the cap,we need to go ahead and shop around for another DT,imo.

    6. baylinorcrush says:

To tell you how excited I am about our DTs now, originally I was all excited because I thought we would finally be able to send McBean down the road, and now he becomes an important cog, LOL.

    7. BeastFromEast92 says:

I wonder if DT Pat Williams is still available,I know he’s like 37 or 38 but is still a run stuffer,if we could get someone cheap on a 1 year contract,so Warren can heal, just a thought.

    8. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, this has not been a good Broncos newsday, lucky you missed it, Warren torn triceps, Thomas out for at least the pres season, Decker reinjures his left foot, White is gone because he couldn’t rehab his achiles well enough, and all that after we all said the last couple of days we were doing well with injuries, even the DP two days ago had an article about Broncos getting healthy, WTF!?!?!?!

    9. BeastFromEast92 says:

Yeah we both want that great Dline,I thought we were getting closer, than BOOM,blindsided by the injury bug again,I’m worried to death about our Dline now,we had Vickerson,Thomas, and McBean last year,we know how that worked out,now we better hope Bunkley is as good as advertised or we will be getting the ball pounded down our throats again……sigh!

Maybe the 43 will help us some against the run, since we never really had a legitimate NT,except for J.Williams, and he’s washed up!!!!

    10. BeastFromEast92 says:

      JINXED!!!!!!!!!!!!

    11. baylinorcrush says:

That’s why Fox gets paid the big bucks, and whatever we propose they never go with it anyway, so I’m not even going to go there, I just know we need help at DT and at RB too since we now have only 4 worthy bodies there if you include Ball. And O Line and CB, good thing we still have money.

    12. baylinorcrush says:

It’s always been about our inability to stop the run, and it sure looks as if it’s still staring us in the face. And the AFC West loves to run!!!

    13. orangecrushTD says:

I’m really upset about the new name change. “Sports authority?!?” That’s like the K Mart of super shopping centers. Not a very positive move, buy like baylin says, hopefully it has the same effect the new jerseys did when we changed in 1997.

A little upset at the team for cutting White. He is a great 3rd or 4th and short back. No offense to Moreno because I love him, but he is too skinny now and Willis is to old. White is pretty young and still has that power.

BTW, just watched the 98 season highlight film and its great. Gave me chills and hopeful thinking.

      -mile high salute-

    14. BeastFromEast92 says:

Hell the rest of the AFC West are getting their stats padded by our lousy Run Defense!!!

No wonder they are great rushing teams they play us twice a year!!!

    15. baylinorcrush says:

LMAO, I remember that KC game in 2009 I think when they had over 250 yards on the ground on us!

    16. BeastFromEast92 says:

I thought it was closer to 300!

    17. BeastFromEast92 says:

Yeah J.Charles had 259 yards rushing and some Lawrence guy had 26,that’s 285 yards….WOW!!!!

    18. baylinorcrush says:

      It was sickening.

    19. BeastFromEast92 says:

The total net yards rushing in that game was exactly 317..we lost 44-24!

    20. BeastFromEast92 says:

      Yeah it was!!!

    21. baylinorcrush says:

Last year we allowed 2,453 yards on the ground, 31st in the league, or 155 yard per game average, I think that should be easy to improve on, at least I would hope so.

    22. BeastFromEast92 says:

Yeah I’d say coaching alone will help us beat those #s,plus we have faster LBs and Safeties too,but the Dline is where it’s at bro!

    23. baylinorcrush says:

Carolina allowed 1,981 yards on the ground, or 23rd in the league, so not really recomforting there, but an upgrade nonetheless..

    24. BeastFromEast92 says:

Sad thing is with our pass rush getting better with Doom and Miller, teams will want to run on us more this year than last year!

    25. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, that’s why the odds makers in Vegas don’t believe in us, they say they may have acquired Von Miller to fix some of their D woes, but can he be expected to fix the stopping the run problem.

    26. Atwater4HOF says:

That 89% spending rule doesn’t come in to effect until 2013 if I’m not mistaken

The link for that is here as well

      http://blogs.nfl.com/?p=83848&preview=true

    27. BeastFromEast92 says:

Hell we should have splurged on a DT,there’s none left now!

    28. Atwater4HOF says:

Otherwise the Chiefs would have to go on a massive spending spree here in the next couple of weeks

    29. BeastFromEast92 says:

Yeah the new cba really helped us outta the hole McD put us in,we were really lucky on that cap thing!!!

    30. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, I found those figures, Oakland and SD right near the limit and KC with largest amount in the league under the cap, good gracious, hate to hear that. Only good news for us is Oakland who is not good and has no cap money, SD having none won’t have any effect because they are good and can go with what they got, and KC with Pioli at the helm will have everything they need to get better in years ahead. We cannot count on the opposition getting weaker, that’s for sure, we have no choice but to get better if we want to regain respectability in the AFC West.

    31. Atwater4HOF says:

Clady is a stud and if we were to go with a lefty QB we still need to lock him up. Even if that means paying him as if he was a LT in a right handed QB offense. I do understand your point though and that would likely be factored in negotiations

    32. baylinorcrush says:

Bummer, with no cap rules minimum limits this year and next Bowlen can stay right where he is at, big bad news bummer.

    33. Atwater4HOF says:

Hate to say it but the Chiefs are becoming one of those well run organizations like the Patriots, Ravens, Steelers, Falcons. Great bargain free agent signings and doing very well in the drafts as well.

    34. BeastFromEast92 says:

We should have locked Harris up when we had the chance,I think that’s why he wanted to leave,we will miss him in the passing game,Franklin is supposed to be a good runblocker, but I don’t know about pass blocker?

    35. Atwater4HOF says:

I liked Harris a lot. Hated to see him go. I had the pipe dream of Harris at RT and Franklin taking Beadles spot. That would have been a vicious, powerful OLine. Also with the amount of money we have I don’t understand not being more competitive with signing him, and the pursuit of Mebane/Franklin. A bit of a head scratcher in hindsight

    36. BeastFromEast92 says:

With Daniels and Hotchstein as our Oline backups,I hope we don’t have any injuries on the Oline!

    37. BeastFromEast92 says:

I guess that’s why we are blogging and EFX is making millions!

    38. Atwater4HOF says:

      Aint that the truth haha

    39. baylinorcrush says:

The owners sure got their way slithering out of that minimum cap room clause for a couple of years, and I’m pretty sure cash strapped teams like us (arguably) will take advantage of that, and not too smart on the players’ part… I repeat, very bad news indeed, totally overlooked that, jus like the players, LOL. We are not, repeat, not gonna get any more big players in here until 2013, that is how I see the direction of this team now, all draft and bare minimum FA until they will force us to spend in 2013, anyway that’s how I see it, clear as day.

    40. Atwater4HOF says:

Very possible. I don’t think we will be too cheap on the spending front. I mean that was the main reason John Fox had problems in Carolina. A front office unwilling to let him go out and get the players he wanted. So hopefully coming off of a disaster with the McD situation combined with Fox and his previous situation will pressure EFX into trying to make splashes to win sooner than later.

Wishful thinking most likely. Too bad that cap rule doesn’t come into effect next season. A 2 year wait doesn’t seem logical, owners definitely won out on that.

    41. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, because EFX has nothing to do with it, the bucks stop with Mr Bowlen.

    42. broncofan9137 says:

Bay. I knew you would have a comment. I like to make sure every word is spelled right so you would be able to read it. LOL. This is a business so no matter the severity of the injury the team has to start looking for some one to take his place. Sndvl. You are absolutely right. The last few years have been bad as far as injuries are concerned. I hope that changes fast.

    43. baylinorcrush says:

As I said all along, stupid players….

    44. baylinorcrush says:

9137, I appreciate your effort in attempting to spell everything right, I happen to be one who respects the english language and hate to see it go the way of the dinosaurs in this texting age…

    45. Atwater4HOF says:

To a point I agree with that. Elway came in to make changes and I have a hard time seeing Bowlen completely handcuffing him. Maybe I’m wrong

    46. DCEBronco says:

Any thoughts on Randy Moss if we need a receiver?
