2011 Training Camp – Day 1: P.M. Blog

July 28th, 2011 - 7:37pm by Gray Caldwell

The second practice of training camp gave us a good feel as to how the morning and evening sessions will differ under Head Coach John Fox.

This morning had an all-business feel to it. And while the players were still getting in plenty of work in the evening, there was a much lighter vibe. In fact, at one point near the end of practice, Knowshon Moreno was doing handstands on the sideline.

Below are some notes from the walkthrough session.

ROLL CALL
Renaldo Hill was back out on the field and participating after missing the morning session due to dehydration. A few newcomers headed out to the field as well — the newly signed Von Miller and Quinton Carter.

In fact, the entire roster was on the field with the exception of rookies Rahim Moore — who agreed to terms with the club but hasn’t gotten into Dove Valley to sign his contract yet — and Nate Irving, who is the final rookie whose contract has not been finalized.

Even Demaryius Thomas was back on the field, wearing his No. 88 jersey but not participating.

LINE ‘EM UP
Miller and Carter got to work early, as both rookies were inserted into the first-unit defense for the majority of the session. Carter lined up alongside Renaldo Hill at safety, and Miller took over an outside linebacker spot with Joe Mays in the middle and D.J. Williams on the other side.

On the offensive side of the ball, Dan Gronkowski took some reps with the first unit.

PLAYMAKERS
There aren’t a ton of plays to be made during a walkthrough, but Miller managed to make a name for himself early on. The rookie snagged an interception from Kyle Orton, and laughed as he danced back to the sideline after the play.

QUICK HITS

  • Executive Vice President of Football Operations John Elway and General Manager Brian Xanders took in the practice on the sideline. Owner and CEO Pat Bowlen made his way out to the field to watch part of the session as well.
  • After practice, Elway and Miller hugged and exchanged pleasantries before the rookie headed over to the VIP tent, where his mom had been watching her son’s first NFL practice.
  • Throughout practice, Brian Dawkins stood beside Coach Fox, seemingly talking over the defensive alignments between plays.
  • Orlando Franklin, who has been taking reps with the first unit offensive line at right tackle, got some extra practice time with Offensive Line Coach Dave Magazu, working on his stance.
  • The last drill of practice had Assistant Special Teams Coach Keith Burns bouncing a soccer ball near the goal line. One player’s job was to leap in the air and tip the ball without stepping into the end zone, and another had to field it inside the 5-yard line and avoid a touchback. That created plenty of laughs, and a light-hearted argument from Perrish Cox when it was ruled he stepped on the line. “I wasn’t in!” he protested.
  • Robert Ayers was back to wearing No. 56 in the afternoon session.
  • The team is back on the field tomorrow afternoon from 2:20 to 5 p.m., and as usual the session is open to the public and free to attend.

Look for more videos, audio and another top story later this evening.

kyle orton has performed well beyond our expectations since we acquired him from chicago as a leftover from the cutler trade, so he has value to us. But, i live in nebraska and have made the 1000 mile round trip to almost every home game since 2005, and after being totally embarassed at the raider game in denver last season I am torn.
Everybody says that if orton has a good o-line and a good defense then he can be successful. I can appreciate that, but what I can’t understand is how sometimes he can look like a pro bowl quarterback with the same o-line and defense that at other times he plays worse than jake delhomme on a bad day with.
On the other hand, Tebow as a rookie took our same team and inspired them to play with enthusiasm and energy. Beyond that, Tebow gets the entire stadium pumped up when he takes the field and the noise doesn’t stop until the game is over. Kyle Orton set the record as the person to make invesco the most silent it had ever been during a raider game(pick six to start the game and it only got worse)

    3. alexanserg says:

Orton sucks. Trade him for a cup of coffee if that’s all we can get. Cut him if we can’t trade at all. We need that 8.9 mil for other parts of the team (DT!!).

Besides I got Tebow for my fantasy team, so he has to start!

    4. alexanserg says:

Anybody else excited to see what this Fannin kid can do? 230 lbs with a 4.3 40. Supposedly he has ball security issues, but if Fox and Co. can coach that out of the kid, he might be a serious force to be reckoned with, with that kinda size and speed.

If he has good vision and all the other tangibles… Man i hope that kid pans out.

    5. Yovi21 says:

I don’t like Orton…He isn’t a leader at all and he isn’t a force the team can follow…Denver needs to stop the QB fiasco…It can’t help the team to not know who will be the starter…honestly I would love it if Tebow beat out Orton..

C’mon Elway, no one is going to want to go to the monday night game week one if Orton is playing!

    6. eddiecheddar says:

Fannin has so much friggin potential. He comes from auburn where he didn’t get a ton of chances to carry the ball since a lot of runs were designed for cam newton, but he did manage to average about 37 yards per reception from an inaccurate passer in cam newton. for a guy that is 5’11″ and 230 pounds that is a monster ypc.

    7. eddiecheddar says:

      TEBOW=homefield advantage
      orton=less cheering and more booing

    8. ddk002 says:

I know your all impatient but wait and see with orton dudes. You know our coaching/run game/receiving/oline/entire defense will be 2x’s better than last years team. This gives us the oppurtunity to see ortons full potential, since we will actually run the ball and play good defense. Orton’s playing for his future so I’m sure he’ll step it up a couple notches…We just signed willis mcgahee so its moreno, mcgahee, fannin, and white in the backfield, behind a fresh and nasty oline. Moreno will rush for +1,000 yards 10+ tds. Orton will throw for 3,500 yds and 25 tds. We will have a top 10 offense and defense, mark my words. I predict 10 wins and playoffs. btw i know ya’ll want tebow but a guy name aaron rodgers sat 3 years, tebow can sit 1 more without “hurting his potential” like i hear from dumb*ss “experts”. Learning the offense from orton for 1 more year will just make tebow that much better of a pocket passer in the future. Whatever happens with the qb situation keep the faith! we have a damn good team any way you slice it so just sit back and let fox & elway work there magic with this team. GO DENVER!!!!

    9. socalbigbroncofan says:

I don’t care what anyone says. Orton sucks and it should be Tebow Time. We have a better chance with tebow than orton.

    10. Ludacris88 says:

NFL.com reports that Matt Moore from the carolina panthers is headed to miami to sign a 2 year deal worth 5 million. Dophins owner Stephen Ross told the Sun-Sentinel Friday that the Orton deal “is dead.”

    11. 1ArabianKnight says:

DDK002, i hear ya, Whether Orton or some other bright spot at QB will emerge destined to lead this fantastic young and ravenous hungry talented defense with the Eye of The Tiger FINALLY in most of their eyes? We are off the radar(just wear we like it) until we go 4-0 in reg season. (3-1 pre-season)!!

      But I See it To!

CRUSH is Gonna be Nasty this Year, Watch out Ravens, Jets, Steelers, and Pats, This defense is gonna make a new name for itself, and be Better than the Orange Crush statistically Mark My Words!

    12. samoanbronco says:

So glad the Jets didn’t get Nnamdi, stop trying to buy a SB FFS!!

Franklin looks like he’s ready to eat somebody! lol
