The Broncos picked up the pace in Saturday’s walkthrough practice.
The team worked on its hurry-up offense, forcing the players to jog to the line of scrimmage during the the early portion of the session.
Offensive Coordinator Mike McCoy was giving constant instruction to his offense, repeating the amount of timeouts left and a particular down-and-distance he wanted his unit to work through.
Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen emphasized communication as he sent various packages onto the field. The energetic coordinator was the only one on the field who got some actual running in as he sprinted to the huddle to give instructions.
The team later settled back into its normal routine as they walked through the playbook and finished the practice with some special teams work, as players participated in a punt-block drill and worked on blocking assignments during kick returns.
Here are some other notes and observations from the session:
Eddie Royal participated in the walkthrough with the first-team offense after sitting out the morning practice.
Brodrick Bunkley — who also missed the morning practice — watched the walkthrough from the sidelines.
Head Coach John Fox stopped by for a brief chat with media and revealed that team captains will be voted on a game-by-game basis as opposed to naming season-long captains.
Matt Willis brought down a nice one-handed catch on a sharply thrown ball.
Brandon Lloyd spent some time working on his batting stance when he was off to the sideline, and Knowshon Moreno had some fun showing fellow running back LenDale White dance moves during a break in the action.
A candidate for best throw of the session came from none other than left tackle Ryan Clady, who took part in a contest with quarterbacks Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn to hit the crossbar from 25 yards out. Orton and Quinn failed to hit the target, but Clady stepped up, drilled the crossbar and made sure to celebrate. Afterwards, he got some congratulatory high-fives from both Orton and Quinn.
The players have the day off tomorrow, and Coach Fox apparently told the players they have the rest of the evening off as well, as there was an audible cheer as they broke the huddle.
The Broncos are back on the practice fields at Dove Valley in a session open to the public Monday afternoon from 2:20 to 5 p.m.

We have a bunch of good players its just the 2nd and 3rd depth. the tight end miss the blocks and got Tebow sacked. We just got to put the right guys in the right areas. but the Orange Crush is back!
GO BRONCOS!!!!
Todays events:
nate jones release day!
bay-
Humor me and tell me that you actually think Richard Quinn is going to be our 2nd string tight end.
weareamr-
We can only hope
Depth Chart means nothing. Like i said, everyone from last year pretty much has the same spot on the depth chart and its their spot to lose. Like we saw, guys like Nate Jones definitely lost thier spot. I used to think McCarthy sucked to the point that I was like “why is he still on our roster” but he played well on Thursday. But his big plays came in the box and on blitzes, in coverage, which is what made me not like him in the past, he sucks, but maybe he has gotten better. One can hope. Dawkins will be gone soon enough. We need safety depth, something we haven’t had for YEARS. McBath is still my Fave safety (when healthy), even more so than Rahim Moore. I have high hope for Moore tho, but he needs to improve his tackling. And he is a rookie, he will get it.
Dline depth is pretty good. LB depth is pretty good. OL depth is horrible. The drop off is disgusting. Kinda why I was wishing we could keep ryan Harris. QB depth is pretty good to the point that its an issue lol, RB is good but as we know we can never have enough runners. We got TEs for days, and I believe Quinn will make the roster because for a run heavy guy like Fox, he does what matters most. He can Block. Somehtign that Thomas (who will also make the team) can’t do well yet, and won’t learn over night. But Quinn can block and for all we know he can catch cuz McD sure didn’t use TEs. Fells and Quinn are probably our two best blocking TEs, Quinn might actually be better than Fells but given fells weight and experience u would expect him to be better. Gronkowski sucks, can’t believe we traded phonzy for him. While Phonz was avg, he was better than Gronkowski and we need CBs.
Orton might be eating alot of dirt, if the 9 sacks the bills got against Bears was no fluke. In thier defense, they have tried to improve thier Oline. Their first round pick this year was Gabe Carimi I believe. TRB
You’re confused 4HOF, I’m one who always said I was anxious to see the new depth chart before it finally came out, I’m not TRB, haha.
And I do think that in Fox’s scheme of things Richard Quinn could have an important role to play, I definitely am not one to count him out yet. If it says second that’s where Fox has him, he made the depth chart not I. Anyhow it’s a bunch of stupid things to argue over right now since I’m hoping Fox will come up with an updated depth chart for this game, and yes I am very looking forward to see if that’s the case and what it will look like, just me. Hate it when folks put unfounded things on my laps…
Maybe so, I still thought you had previously said something. But regardless, Thomas is listed as the 5th tight end and gets first team reps. So take the initial depth chart for what its worth.
Quinn is an overdrafted McDaniels holdover who was brought in for blocking. Only problem is he’s a pretty poor blocker. He’ll get cut before Green and Thomas are considered. I’d expect to see Thomas higher on the next depth chart and I think “Fox agrees” considering his 1st team reps and obvious progress. He’ll be a red zone monster for us in my eyes
Well, get yourself a better memory or lay off.
Oh relax its not a big deal. You don’t see me getting worked up by your sarcastic comments in concern to my Thomas and McCarthy post.
“So maybe I shouldn’t go so much by Fox’s depth chart and pay more attention to you guys?” As you stated.
So no you don’t have to pay any attention to me for all I care, just posting my opinions just as do you.
I thought that had some humor in it, but basically accusing me of lying is just not gonna go well with me at all. I told you I never said that because I happen to believe in depth charts so you should of left it at that and even apologize for misquoting me but instead you come back and say I still thought you said that, so whatever, like you say, no biggie, but don’t be shocked if I come back at you with artillery like that.
“Maybe so, I still thought you had previously said something.” I guess it isn’t spelled out properly (which would be my fault). I’m not saying you are lying, I’m just saying I thought you had. Not a big deal, not insisting that I’m right. So yea I apologize for getting you and TRB mixed up on something that was said a week ago.
And really? Coming back with artillery? Dude it’s a message board, relax.
Meant the artillery YOU dished out.
And yeah I remember you guys, discussion after the depth chart came out, but I read it after I took like a three day sabbatical during that time if you can remember that so I definitely never said anything about the depth chart.
But let’s move on, it’s uncomfortable for other bloggers to read stuff like that.
guys’ discussion
I know what you meant, I wouldn’t call it artillery… more like a mistake. Sigh.
I’m already passed it
Okay anyways guys, changing the topic, what time did we practice today???
What about Bryant Mickinnie (sp?) who played with Minnesota and was cut for money purposes, anybody heard anything about him, could be a good addition for OL.
I believe Fox gave them today off.
Yeah, in fact it’s at the end of the blog above which is from yesterday:
The players have the day off tomorrow, and Coach Fox apparently told the players they have the rest of the evening off as well, as there was an audible cheer as they broke the huddle.
The Broncos are back on the practice fields at Dove Valley in a session open to the public Monday afternoon from 2:20 to 5 p.m.
Dang ok, thanks Bay
Mckinnie apparently didn’t stay in shape in the offseason. Also the article I found says he is asking for 2.5mill a year which would be a tad pricey for a backup tackle. I agree with you in the fact that we should be out looking for depth with our Oline though.
Hopefully the Broncos brass will be on their toes when players start hitting waivers
If I’m not mistaken I think Mark Tauscher is still a free agent. That would be my ideal pickup but I’m not sure he wants a reserve role.
4HOF, true that i forgot about Tauscher, as of last tuesday i believe he is still FA, has had a few injuries tho, but probably not willing to be back up.
Yea I think he missed almost all of last year with a shoulder injury. Slim pickings out there when it comes to offensive linemen. A guy like Polumbus was perfect as a backup tackle, hopefully the waiver wire treats us well
4HOF
I suppose you were talking Tyler right ?? he would be a perfect fit for backup at low cost. (If he could ever get his feet moving a little faster)
Quick note around the league ,
Looks like the 49ers cant find a QB for their liking, so much they may have Dante Culpepper in for a try out. Also rumors going around that the Patriots might actually cut Fat Alberthaynsworth…..
Yeah definitely Tyler Polumbus. Not that he’s available or anything, I think he actually has a starting role in Seattle (not 100% sure though). But a player like him would be ideal.
Yea, he was kind of heavy footed… lol
Really? That is interesting about the 49ers. Harbaugh seemed so sold on being able to finally utilize Alex Smith to his full potential. That Kapernick kid is intriguing, I think he’ll be a good player down the road.
Haynesworth… what can you say, he was so dominant and had a chance to be one of the best to ever play DT. Instead he gets a HUGE contract and disregards authority and basically stops caring about actually performance on the field. What a waste
I wonder if another solid outing by Quinn will draw interest from a team like the 49ers. I like Quinn and would like to see him get another shot somewhere, plus if we could get anything for him draft pickwise that’d be great too.
4HOF, interesting comment about Quinn, never thought about trading him this year but he does always seem to be 4gotten man, and altho we could never make up for trading Hillis for him it sure would be nice to get a pick in exchange atleast with a trade…
1 other thing
Harris had been hurt a awful lot last couple years, but was def a better passt blocker than run blocker IMO….and all signs pointed to him signing a 1 year deal atleast…then bam he’s an Eagle…
GO BRONCOS
Hey Bay, that thing you wrote about Orton playing for the money. Very correct. he has never seen such money in 1 year. 9 million that is. The reason the Miami deal didn’t go through was partly compensation but mostly Ortons contract the way I heard it. He wanted long, vested interest. A multi year contract but not just that, but one with alot of money. He wasn’t gonna compromise his 9 million for nobody and Miami did not feel like taking a 1 year 9 million contract so Orton said fine Ill stay in Denver 1 more year. Dont get it twisted, he is as over the Broncos and some fans are over him. The reason he took this route is becasue he will make almost 9 mil and he will get to test the FA waters, something he has never gotten a chance to do. So yup, thats who we are going into this season with. Someone playing for the money and not the future. They all play for the money and understandably so, I would too. At the end fo the day, the season will end and orton will be a FA, and not unless he magically turns into Peyton, Broncos are not gonna seek further services from him. So yea, kizla is verry right. Anyway, it is what it is. TRB
What do you think the chance’s are that Elway finally accepts the lower offering price for Orton and excepts the fact that Denver will only win 3 games this year with Tebow in at the helm, sufficing the fans want for Tebow to play then getting the 1st pick in the draft and then drafting what Elway has always coveted in Andrew Luck for Stanford.
After the 2 kids got done fighting earlier this evening; I like the direction this blog is taking. Talking additional FA signings. I really dont think we are done yet. At least I hope not.
If the Patriots cut Albert will he fall to wiavers? If he does do we take a chance?
I think 3 areas still need attention in this order O-line (pick a spot), FB and CB……
cladybunch. Now there is some serious thinking. Im sure that is on the table.
During the 1st preseason game it was really interesting when I heard Dave Logan make a comment about Spencer Larsen “he could be fighting for a roster spot” considering that he is very versitle and he is the only FB listed on the roster….
HomeTeam as for Albert…I cant see Fox starting off his tenure with that mess…althought when you see a players potential it is always intriging.
gobroncos11
Alot of variables about that but it’s something that if it worked out that way it could be good for everyone (except Tebow) and the fact that Bronco Nation would have to sit thru another misserable year. (very hard to take given this past years fiasco).
Bunch, compensation for the Broncos for an Orton trade was never even discussed with Miami because Orton did not want to renegociate his contract with the Dolphins at all and they said no way we are paying him 9 mil this year, so talks never went any further, no draft pick trade talks at all, it was never up to Elway. Just clarifying for everyone’s sake as it seems bloggers are jumping on your assumptions.
Hometeam, for the record, calling them both kids is not exactly condusive for preserving a non-hostile atmosphere.
As far as FA, we have alot of work to do for this team overall in terms of depth. Oline especially. Larsen is a good and getting better at FB. and flexible enough to step in at LB. Not to mention his LB skills come in handy on ST. Being a jack of all trades has kept him around and will continue to IMO. But depth at FB would be nice to have, Sylvester is also a FB on our team. To attract true talented depth, we will have to be a place people want to come and currently, we aren’t and won’t be until we can prove we are better than 4-12 this season. The most we can look forward to is signing the final cuts that didn’t make it on peoples 53 man roster and chances are we may not sign many of those. but on the upside our starting crew is taking form and if we don’t have any major loses, I believe we can win at least 6 games, which i suppose is a step up from last years 4. TRB out…
Antone see Gronkowski making the team?
Yeah, that one rolled right off my back since I had no choice but defending myself.
I don’t, I see Fells, Quinn, Rosario and Thomas, don’t think they’ll carry more than 4, and if they do Green before Gronkowsi.
I see Green instead of Quinn
lol oh my…
But anyways, I couldn’t imagine Haynesworth on our team. Dline is probably our position of most depth right now and his ego would still demand a large contract that we can’t afford to take on. Plus if Shanahan and Belichick don’t want him then I’ll trust their judgement.
Agreed with Green over Quinn. Hard to imagine us cutting a draft pick and risk losing him to waivers. The more I think about it, I feel that it might end up being Thomas taken over Rosario fulfilling the “receiving” tight end spot. Just a hunch though, nothing supporting it at this point.
TRB good point. I was pleasantly surprised by Warren’s interest in us considering where he’s at in his career and coming from a winner like the Patriots. John Fox being the player’s coach that he is, had a lot to do with that.
TE talk. I agree, I don’t think we carry more than 4 TE’s, I think someone told me Fox said 3. If its 4 however, in this Order, Fells, Rosario, Julius Thomas, Quinn. Like It or not, Quinn can block and has the most experience blocking, which Fox needs, and rookie TEs don’t learn over night. I like Virgil Greens Athleticism, but I don’t think it is good enough to make the roster. Probably the practice squad tho. On another note, Gronkowski was by war the worst acquisition of 2010, possibly only outdone by the acquisition of Maroney. He is crap and correct me if i am wrong but he also dropped a key pass in Dallas. Not the best way to campaign for a Job with alot of competition.
On another note, how about Lance Kendricks, He was the highest rated TE on EFX board but ST. Louis scooped us. Him and Bradford seem to have a real rapport already, and he is making plays. I will strongly consider him in fantasy football lol. But from his play, even if its only 1 so far, he played good, so kudos to EFX for seeing the potential. Not much of a blocker but great receiver, like Tamme of the Colts. TRB
the only thing that needs to be said at this blog and for everyone is:
release nate jones!
because everyday until that happens its going to be
release nate jones day!
did anyone mention how the club should cut nate jones yet?
More often than not we end up cutting at least one of our draft picks, and since we were able to acquire 2 more TEs in FA after the two we drafted something tells me they weren’t so sold on what they had yet so the odds are good both drafted TEs won’t make it, just a personal view point though. Practice squad sounds a likely spot for Virgil, or Thomas, but that would be more dangerous. Thomas is an interesting dilemna because he is so inexperienced you know it will take him at least a full year to get the hang of it but since you spent a pick to move up to get him you basically cornered yourself in keeping him on the roster so you don’t take a chance to lose him. So, he’ll probably hang on but I don’t see much contribution from him this year and I do realize most will disagree with me and say he is the next Gates, haha.
Fox likes to have blocking tight ends but you have to be at least somewhat of a threat to catch the ball. Quinn is not. He should have never been a 2nd round draft pick, more like a 5th rounder.
Fells – 41 catches last season
Rosario- 32 catches last season
Quinn- 1 career catch
He is basically just an undersized offensive tackle to me. His blocking is not impressive enough to me the way a guy like daniel graham was.
