2011 Training Camp – Day 17: A.M. Blog

August 13th, 2011 - 12:26pm by Gray Caldwell

Two days after their first preseason game, the Broncos were back on the field at Dove Valley Saturday morning for another padded practice.

Even though there haven’t been practices every day, we’re still calling this training camp day 17, because it’s the 17th day since it kicked off on July 28.

Let’s get to the recap.

ROLL CALL
Among the players not participating in the morning session were defensive linemen Brodrick Bunkley and Louis Leonard, both of whom watched their teammates run through drills from the sideline. Syd’Quan Thompson and Eddie Royal also did not participate. Head Coach John Fox said the team is being cautious with Royal’s hip — not the one that was operated on in the offseason.

PLAYMAKERS

  • It looked like Champ Bailey was set to snag an interception, but Julius Thomas seemingly came out of nowhere to jump in front of the veteran cornerback for the catch, making sure the ball stayed with the offense.
  • Bailey got his revenge later in a red-zone drill, picking off a Brady Quinn pass in the end zone.
  • Not to be outdone by his fellow rookie tight end, Virgil Green soared to grab a ball over his head delivered by Tim Tebow for a touchdown in the back of the end zone.
  • Brandon Lloyd was active in the same red zone drill, reeling in two Kyle Orton passes for touchdowns in both corners of the end zone.
  • Eric Decker had a couple long runs after catches, one of which went for a touchdown. Afterward, he walked back to the huddle getting congratulated by Lloyd.
  • Willis McGahee took the first few carries during team drills, finding a hole on his first run. In a later team session in practice, he found a lot of space again due to a nice block by Spencer Larsen on Brian Dawkins.
  • Robert Ayers raced into the backfield on the first play of team drills, putting pressure on Orton.
  • D.J. Williams tipped away a pass in coverage during team drills.
  • DAILY JUKEBOX

  • A Tribe Called Quest: “Scenario”
  • Foo Fighters: “Everlong”
  • Sugar Hill Gang: “Apache”
  • QUICK HITS

  • Brandon Lloyd channeled his inner Chad Ochocinco and kicked a handful of field goals under the watchful eye of Matt Prater, while the rest of the team ran through special teams drills on the other field.
  • After practice, a lot of players got in some extra conditioning. The running backs ran wind sprints while some defensive linemen ran while attached to teammates by bungee cords. Afterward, the linemen did crunches in the middle of the field.
  • Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen stopped by a few position drills, reminding players to “finish! Finish everything you do!”
  • During a drill, Eric Decker caught a punt with one hand while holding his helmet in the other.
  • The team is back on the field for a walkthrough closed to the public at 6 p.m. The next public practice is Monday afternoon from 2:20 to 5 p.m.

      release nate jones day!

    4. Cdudbronc24 says:

Is Nate Jones really getting released? Because he looked terrible. Was constantly getting beat by 3rd string recievers

    5. AceII says:

I’m getting super pumped with the way our defense is taking form. These guys are putting in work. The afc west better bring their game when facing the broncos this year. Thank you Fox and Allen for revamping the Orange Crush. I wish we could play KC early because Haley admitted they were out of shape. hahaahahaha

    6. BeastFromEast92 says:

Texas A&M going over to the SEC,also SEC plans to go after Florida St,Clemson,or Va Tech.

    7. marshisboss says:

Maybe Dawk was telling him: You are the weakest link goodbye

    8. 58-MillerTime says:

It would be graet to see Nate Jones let go.

    9. sndvl says:

I guess next Saturday is release Nate Jones Day…

    10. henryac says:

Bay, I don’t think the SEC will go after Florida St. They were offered membership before and turned it down. There was a list of teams they were looking at that ranged from Clemson on one end to Missouri on the other. They also looked at Louisville, Duke, NC and NC St. Va Tech seems to be tied to Virginia so that may not work out. The most likely targets are either Clemson or NC/NC St..

    11. henryac says:

Sorry, BFE, that was meant for you, not bay!!!

    12. royalbroncofan1 says:

The Denver Broncos have signed WR Greg Orton and designated WR Mark Dell as waived/injured. Greg becomes the second Orton on the Broncos’ roster from Purdue University, joining Kyle (no relation).

    13. strandoftds says:

What in the world happened to Dell? That`s a bummer, he looked promising. Oh well, we are deep at WR anyway.

    14. baylinorcrush says:

Maybe this Orton has got “it”, LOL.

    15. baylinorcrush says:

He got hurt at the end of the game.

BTW, what kind of knee protection is Miller wearing, is it just for practice?

    16. baylinorcrush says:

Mark Dell’s injury was called a knee sprain, but I really didn’t see how we can keep him with Willis, Anderson and Riley the way they played.
Royal, Lloyd, Decker, Willis, Anderson, and maybe they keep Riley until Demaryius gets off the PUP if he ever does.

    17. Atwater4HOF says:

Is he wearing knee protection? It just looks like the ball saran wrapped to the bag.

Or are you referring to something else

    18. baylinorcrush says:

I love to see that Orton makes all the connections to Lloyd in both corners of the end zone when he wears the do not touch red jersey, LOL. At this point I really don’t care to find out what happens in those practices other than injury reports because it is so irrelevant to real game situation is kind of absurd to pay it any attention, at least for me, this is something that benefits the players but does absolutely nothing for me, and listening to Fox the other day saying he couldn’t wait to see what kind of players he’s got in game situation (against Dallas), he obviously feels sort of the same…

    19. baylinorcrush says:

I see, you may be right, so hard to tell, at first glance I saw a clear plastic knee cap protector but since I’ve never seen something like that, a ball in saran wrap attached to the end of the dummy for stripping purposes makes total sense, but it sure is placed exactly on his knee, funny stuff.

    20. baylinorcrush says:

Thanks for clearing it up for me, didn’t want to have to worry about Miller.

    21. Atwater4HOF says:

To a point I agree. But let’s use Matt Willis as an example. He became such a well-liked player because his name was popping up everywhere in the practice reports last training camp. This year we are seeing that Julius Thomas has a lot of potential and is progressing quicker than expected. Cassius Vaughn is showing strides and that carried over to the preseason game (in my opinion).

To say it is so irrelevant to game situations seems a tad drastic. For quarterbacks that applies considering they get to wear the wonderful don’t hit me jerseys. The other positions however are much more realistic to game situations. Ofcourse Fox wants to see how players look in game situations as well, all part of the evaluation process

    22. baylinorcrush says:

I hear you, what I’m saying is I’m done paying it attention now that games where you can actually hit QBs have begun, don’t take me too seriously.

      New Orton blog up, LOL.

    23. stevecan2 says:

Demaryius Thomas is a great example of why we need to stop drafting / bring in players with known injuries. If healthy no doubt he would be a stud, but yet we may never find out. I trust our Medical Staff as much I trust Leprechaun sitings.

    24. Chris Wade says:

Gosh Steve guess we better throw Eric Decker back then.

    25. mike1730256 says:

nate jones wont make the team he was getting beat by dallas 3rd and 4th string wide outs he gave up 2 touchdowns + the 2 pt conversion so unless something crazy happens with him in the next 3 preseason games i dont see him making the team

    26. goblin53 says:

dont get me wrong i dont like nate jones but he only gave up one td the other he came over to help out with and the 2 pt was busted coverage all the way around.
