2011 Training Camp – Day 12: Blog

August 8th, 2011 - 6:18pm by Max Henson

After a day off, the rested Broncos were back on the field at Dove Valley Monday for an afternoon practice.

The team went through their positional drills and team sessions before facing the challenge of some situational football at the end of practice.

ROLL CALL
Linebacker D.J. Williams and running back LenDale White participated after missing several practices.

Syd’Quan Thompson did not practice and watched the session in shorts with injured wideout Demaryius Thomas.

The first-team offense and defense mirrored the depth chart released today except at the defensive tackle position where Marcus Thomas and Ty Warren saw some first-team in action in place of Kevin Vickerson.

DAILY JUKEBOX
Here is a list of the three songs played during the team stretch.

1. “Put On” – Young Jeezy
2. “Enter Sandman” -Metallica
3. “My Life, Your Entertainment” – T.I.

DRILL STATIONS
The defense continued to practice forcing turnovers as they worked on a strip drill to start practice. Players from each position group worked on stripping the ball loose when coming at a player from behind.

The linebackers later worked on avoiding cut blocks around their legs while the defensive backs practiced backpedaling and breaking on the ball.

The secondary also participated in a unique drill where they were told to shove a blocker down and stop a giant red ball rolling towards them in quick succession before wrapping up an oncoming ball carrier.

The running backs spent a good amount time running routes and catching passes out of the backfield.

ONE-ON-ONES

  • Jamel Hamler bobbled the ball but came down with a reception all with one hand, despite having Brandon Bing draped all over him.
  • Matt Willis got by Nate Jones on a post and made for an easy pitch and catch with quarterback Tim Tebow.
  • Cornerback Chris Harris drew some praise from his defensive coaches and teammates as he locked up D’Andre Goodwin so well at the line of scrimmage that receiver was unable to run his route.
  • Quarterback Adam Weber had one of the better throws of the session from 5 yards out as he lofted a fade to the corner of the end zone to Goodwin, who made the over-the-shoulder catch. Perrish Cox, who was in coverage on the play, complimented Weber on the perfectly placed ball.
  • PLAYMAKERS
Today was a tough day to be matched up with Brandon Lloyd.

The NFL’s leading receiver from a year ago caught almost everything thrown his way, making life a little easier for quarterback Kyle Orton.

At the start of a 7-on-7 session, Orton fired a ball through traffic to Lloyd, who saw the ball bounce off his chest and into the air, but the receiver located the ball and brought down the reception off the rebound.

    (Watch the highlight on Facebook.)

Later, Orton launched about a 50-yard pass to Lloyd, who got past safety Rahim Moore over the top to make the easy touchdown reception.

In team drills, Lloyd was at it again as he made a diving catch on a crossing pattern over the middle.

Moore would redeem himself in team drills as he stayed stride-for-stride with Willis on a deep post, forcing Orton to look elsewhere and eventually throw the ball away.

Running back Willis McGahee had one of best runs of the session as he found a hole on the left side and picked up a nice gain before being ushered to the sideline by Wesley Woodyard.

    2-MINUTE CHALLENGE
Towards the end of practice the team was presented with a late-game scenario.

Starting at their own 35-yard line, the offense had 1:40 on the clock with zero timeouts to complete a drive — down a single point to the defense.

Orton was first to lead the no-huddle offense and he set up field goal attempt after a completion over the middle to Willis, but Matt Prater missed the long-range attempt wide left.

Quarterback Brady Quinn was up next and he got a quick first down on a pass to David Anderson but Jeremy Jarmon recorded a sack on the next play. Quinn then tried to hit Julius Thomas but the pass was cut off by Joe Mays, who made the interception and wisely slid to the ground.

Tim Tebow took his turn and he faced constant pressure as he threw his first two passes away with pressure in his face. He was barely able to get his third pass off and it was intercepted by David Bruton.

    HAIL MARY
The final practice segment presented this scenario for the offense: four seconds left with the ball at the opponent’s 40-yard line. Time for one shot at the end zone.

Orton’s first attempt was knocked down in the end zone by Moore. He appeared to be sacked by Jarmon during his second attempt, but coaches let play continue and Orton connected with Britt Davis just past the goal line for the score.

Brady Quinn got one shot at the drill, but the defense was there to bat away the attempt in the end zone.

    QUICK HITS

  • Anderson, Cox, Eric Decker and Cassius Vaughn all practiced returning punts at various points throughout the practice.
  • Brian Dawkins ordered himself to do push-ups after a team drill. The safety alternated hands, lifting himself into the air before each push-up.
  • Before practice started, offensive guard Chris Kuper lined up at wide receiver and caught some quick passes from Tebow and Quinn. He didn’t drop one.
  • Orlando Franklin and Robert Ayers engaged in a good battle during linemen one-on-ones. Franklin held Ayers off in round one, but the defensive end won round two with a spin move.
  • Von Miller had a couple nice plays and was applauded by Linebackers Coach Richard Smith in team drills as he popped McGahee in the hole and sacked Orton on a blitz off the edge.

omg. clearly i have offended you with such playful little jabs. sorry to be such a jerk. first things first. did I EVER directly insult either one of you? NO. I’m not referring to the fans like us who have been around since the super bowl days and earlier. I am referring to the ones who are stupid and retarded. you have to admit there have been alot worse things said from some of our fans in the last couple years. stop letting little insults get to you. if Im such a moron, why waste your time responding to me in the first place? GO BRONCOS

    3. DenverOranges says:

Brian how do I sign up for that

    4. DenverOranges says:

Let’s not make a mountain out of an ant hill. Just keep your slander to yourself and enjoy the site were all a part of the Broncos, band wagon or not so let’s just get along

What constitutes a fan as being “stupid and retarded?” I would like to know so I can shy away from those attributes.

I should know about slander as baylinorcrush and others can testify! LOL!

    7. DenverOranges says:

      Thanks Brian.
I am signing up right now. I hope i can watch it on my I phone that would be sweet.

anybody know what marlon mccree is doing at practice?

    9. Bro says:

Mccree is just helping out being an assistant

    10. brian_schneider says:

Is he working with the safeties and secondary?

    11. Atwater4HOF says:

      Bro-

Where did you see that? I’m trying to find other sites that also do Broncos training camp coverage.

    12. Atwater4HOF says:

In reference to the Vaughn and Decker scuffle

    13. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Cooler heads prevail people. But comments like, stupid, retard, and especially “not real fan” will always rub people the wrong way, myself included. Wasn’t specific, but made to sound like anyone who supports Tebow knows nothing or is not a real fan. Sure those were not your intentions … or maybe they were but u just considered it a “little” insult. We just try to keep personal attacks to a minimum and we will respond.

Im more interested in what someone posted about Cassius Vaughn throwing a punch at decker … is that true? wow. Cassius has been playing alot of D and i like that. Seems like we lost our special teams ace tho. He is very fast and he will be welcome on the D. It would seem that Cassius and Syd put on an Interception show today from what Ive read on Twitter … Last year it was Cox impressing but He has been put at the bottom of the pile and he is most likely gone. If vaughn and Syd can work out, along with Chris Harris and Bing … its not an all star second team, but we can survive this season without getting another CB. But the list does have to come down to 53. TRB out…

    14. strandoftds says:

Tav True and Royal, we`re in this together, we`re wanting the same things, wanting to win now. Whether Kyle Orton starts or Tim Tebow starts week 1 we all desire the same thing. As for me you all know that I want Tim Tebow to start right away. I`m excited about what I witnessed the last three games last year. When Tebow was in Our Denver Broncos caught fire. We lost two of the three but our defense was horrid. This year will be a different story. Orton or Tebow I`m raring to go, lets get this season started. I sure don`t want to be in the Andrew luck sweepstakes, heavens no. I`m rooting for Tim Tebow is all. He`s sure fun to watch. My two cents.

    15. eddiecheddar says:

so is mccree officially on the coaching staff or what? he used to play for fox back in carolina and he was here for a little while too

    18. royalbroncofan1 says:

“Tim Tebow not ready for Prime Time”
      Source: ESPN

The irony is not lost on the city of Denver that John Elway is judging a QB controversy between Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow. This is like Heidi Klum judging a bikini contest at a fat farm.
Doesn’t matter anyway. It’s over. Orton won by the kind of margin Kim Jong Il wins elections. If it had been a pee wee basketball game, they’d have turned the scoreboard off.

You knew Orton won if you attended the intrasquad scrimmage Saturday at Mile High Who The Hell Ever Heard of Invesco Stadium. Orton was poised, sharp and studied. He would’ve been 7-for-7 if it weren’t for two drops and some clumsy sideline footwork by receiver Eric Decker.

Tebow, meanwhile, looked like a man being chased by bees. He barely got off a pass (1-for-3) and was sacked three times. Nice kid, sincere as a first kiss, but he’s not ready yet, might never be ready. Somebody alert the Filipino missionaries. If he doesn’t improve, he might be among them sooner than we thought.

The entire locker room wants Orton. In the NFL, you have to start the guy the players think they can win behind. They see. They watch film. They know what’s working.
The Heisman Trophy winner looks stiff under center. Most quarterbacks go snap-step-step-step-throw. Tebow goes snap-step-step-step-think-ponder-think-some-more-finally-decide-throw-three-feet-behind-the-receiver.
If his first read is covered, he needs a Garmin. He drops his arm as if he wants to run, then thinks better of it. He doesn’t quite understand the coverages yet anyway. And when he finally does decide, he’s late getting it off. He seems flustered, and it screws up his accuracy. He’s much better in the shotgun, but in the NFL you need to have the threat of a run, and the shotgun gives you none.
“The Tebow Thing” is as dead as the Volkswagen Thing. Orton is No. 1 by three city blocks, as the Broncos confirmed with their depth chart Monday: (1) Orton, (2) Tebow, (3) Brady Quinn.

It’s the only choice Denver could make. The entire locker room wants Orton. In the NFL, you have to start the guy the players think they can win behind. They see. They watch film. They know what’s working. “If they picked Tebow now,” said a source within the team, “the coaching staff would totally lose the players.”

The other way you know it’s over is that Orton is talking to Tebow again. He didn’t talk to him all last year. He told people it was because Tebow was a “rookie,” but it was more than that. Tebow, ever gracious, kept talking with reporters every day. A lot of the players thought he should’ve stopped, in deference to the starter, Orton, who was getting scrums one-tenth the size.

Anyway, this lockout crushed Tebow. He’s such a hard worker that he would’ve been at Bronco headquarters every day in the offseason, learning coverages, working on his three-step drop, soaking up every word new coach John Fox uttered. But instead, he reported to camp in fantastic shape physically but still flabby technically.

“He’s a great young man who is really working hard,” says team president Elway, whose team will visit the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday night. “But he didn’t get an offseason to work on [playing from the pocket]. He didn’t get much of that in college. And it’s a completely different thing than the shotgun. Plus, he’s only had the one season. But he’s an amazing football player. I’d never give up on Tim Tebow.”

Me, either. In fact, if I were playing in a streetball game where the losing team has to move permanently to a time-share in Kabul, I’d take Tebow every time.

      Year of the Quarterback
ESPN has dedicated 2011 to examining one of the most crucial positions in all of sports — the quarterback.
      Year of the QB »
“One of the unique things about Tim is that he has that unique ability to make something happen when the play breaks down,” Elway says. “That gives him a great advantage there … but you have to win games from the pocket in this league. You can’t rely on your improvising. That’s one thing I learned. I was always going to make those plays outside the pocket, but that can’t be your bread and butter.”

Wait, what? That WAS your bread and butter!

“Well, OK, I guess we got to three Super Bowls that way, but you don’t WIN Super Bowls that way. I learned that the hard way.”

Anyway, none of this is as interesting to Elway as Denver’s newfound pass rush. It didn’t have one last year, finishing dead last in the NFL in sacks. This new one stars DE Elvis (Doom) Dumervil, who showed up at camp at 260 pounds and more cut than Michelangelo’s David, and No. 2-overall choice LB Von Miller, both of whom looked unblockable in the scrimmage.
“I just feel bad for Orlando Franklin,” says Elway of Denver’s second-round pick, an offensive lineman from the University of Miami. “He gets to camp, and he’s got to stare across the line at Miller and Dumervil every day. Not easy.”

So what should we expect of a team that went 4-12 last season and finished the 2009 season with a 2-8 run, part of the Era That Dare Not Speak Its Name, when owner Pat Bowlen turned the team over to a hooded high school brat named Josh McDaniels?

What if I offered you an over-under of six wins?
“I’d be very, very disappointed if we weren’t over six,” Elway grumbled.
      What about eight?
“Well, remember, we have the third-hardest schedule in the league. … But we’re going to have a better defense this year. And when you have a good defense, the crowd noise really gets up. But you’ve got to make stops. Because when the crowd is screaming their heads off for ‘dee-fense’ and you never get any stops, they stop screaming. They kind of go, ‘Why are we screaming if you never stop anybody?’”

This is where Tebow comes in.
      He’ll be a wonderful cheerleader.

BFE, love your enthusiasm bro. Broncos country is everywhere. Heck we got fans on here from Aussie, Brittian, and Costa Rica. Heck that says it all right there. Heck I was a Broncos fan in Orange County California and wore my ORANGE AND BLUE at raider games in L.A. What does that tell ya. A DIE HARD BRONCO FAN!!!!! Just saying.

    24. Bro says:

I get so confused when people say Bro, i dont know if they are referering to me or not ha. Can you all do me a favor and if your post is intended for then put it in all caps? Thanks! it will clear things up haha :P

    25. DenverOranges says:

      Trb,
How can they put the Dolphins that far ahead of us when we have there quarter back? Lol no but really I will be shocked if they beat us this year. Shocked!

    26. Atwater4HOF says:

      lol will do BRO

    27. strandoftds says:

And there are other DIE HARDS all over the map and if they BLEED ORANGE like I do then they are apart of the BRONCOS FAMILY where ever they live.

    28. strandoftds says:

      Roger that BRO!! LOL

    29. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Lol Oranges I dont know. I think we should have been number 19, right above the seahawks, making them 20. After all, sure they made it to the playoffs in a crappy division, but i remember us kicking thier butts last year tho. 19 would be the highest i would put us on that list tho. They are not factoring in the possibility that we got better. Their only comment was QB controversy … blah blah blah … get over it lol

    30. brian_schneider says:

      @eternalorangeandblue: LMFAO!

Maybe next season if we don’t have a lockout Tebow will get more time with the 1st team offense and maybe get his chance. With last offseason and this offseason it is like Tebow is still a rookie. I have to have patience.
I sure hope Orton and Lloyd will still be the dynamic duo again. I still would like to see Royal more invovled in the passing game. Somtimes it “seems “like Orton never looks to the slot reciever which may change with Royal and Decker working it. I’ll have the Royal Decker with Lloyd and a side of Moreno and for desert some killer Von Miller and Doom!

    31. 1nOnlyTRB says:

rbf1, I loved this from the convo lol

“Well, OK, I guess we got to three Super Bowls that way, but you don’t WIN Super Bowls that way. I learned that the hard way.”

I already tried to explain to people, and if the writer did his research he would know Orton went against the second team D, while tebow went against the first team D with second team OL … but if all people need is an excuse to put the kid down even further … the scrimmage was a good reason. But I appreciate them rushing tebow like someone said (dont remember who) … it will only get him better at making quick reads . TRB

    32. DenverOranges says:

      Strands,

You’re a diehard fan all right. I would be scared just to drive by the stadium I don’t got big enough balls to go hang with a bunch dirty Raiders fans. Mad props to anyone that sets through that and doesn’t get stabbed or Shot… Or even gang banged for that matter.

    33. eternalorangeandblue says:

or the reporter who asked the jersey question

    34. brian_schneider says:

@1nOnlyTRB: I don’t want to toot my own horn but I said that earlier. Rushing Tebow is about the 2nd closest thing he’ll get to the read deal this season. If you’re going to test him test him at full speed, basically force him to work on his reads.

    35. DenverOranges says:

      Trb,

Very true! I think it’s pretty funny that the chiefs are so low on that list I can’t wait to beat the Snot out of theme this year

    36. DenverOranges says:

      them

    37. strandoftds says:

Denver Oranges, in 1989 at the L.A. Coliseum I just about got into a fight with someone. The guys couldn`t even speak a word of english. Gang bangers from across the boarder dude.

    38. brian_schneider says:

When we do beat the snot out of them Haley can’t accuse us of cheating then LOL!

    39. 1nOnlyTRB says:

I thought it was you Brian! lol. I was gonna put your name in the post, but didn’t wanna give false credit but I kinda knew it was you who said the thing about rushing Tebow.

I hear that Oranges, and SD is higher than us too … when they always choke blah. I think thier D will be worse without Dcoord. and thier Running game wont be that good with just Ryan Matthews. Oakland lost Zach Miller and Nnamdi. Chiefs lost OC … I think we will comepete for our division this year. TRB

    40. royalbroncofan1 says:

TRB – I liked that excerpt as well !! LOL! Yes – he learned the hard way.
Plus we all know that TT would be behind the eight ball not having an offseason.
      ESPN writer was Rick Reilly.

LOL on the power rankings as Vikings just got younger at QB !!! (funny yet true).

    41. royalbroncofan1 says:

Are you serious TRB ?? KO was going against 2nd team D ? sheesh….
You’re right though — it should help TT.

    42. killerkod says:

There are Broncos fans EVERYWHERE. Hell, I live in Newfoundland, Canada where football isn’t even played. And I HATE the CFL.

Rbf1, thanks for posting that article…..I really enjoyed the read.

I believe it…………..the players know that Orton gives them the best chance to be successful. And with a more balanced attack with a running game can make Orton really effective IMO. If our O line plays better, he might have a bit more time in the pocket to complete some passes….cause we know he isn’t the most nimble QB in the league. LOL

I for one am expecting some great things from this team this year. We might not make the playoffs but I believe we will be very competitive and not the joke of a team we were last year.

    43. 1nOnlyTRB says:

      New blog by the way.

Denver Oranges, I just wanted to let you know that there is no S at the end of my name. Just saying bro.

    45. royalbroncofan1 says:

JE has the right idea. If we have defense we can keep it close.

Here at Invesco with the crowd behind the D – we could get our homefield advantage back.

    46. strandoftds says:

We will be well balanced also running the ball alot. Expect us this year to run, run, run.

    47. brian_schneider says:

After McD took the collar off Orton last season, I’m expecting to see him throw some deep bombs this year. With running and running successful, opening up playaction and Lloyd’s spectacular catching ability…could be awesome!

    48. DenverOranges says:

      strands,

I was just learning how to wipe my own but then lol. Would you go now?

    49. DenverOranges says:

Strands sounds better then strand in my head my bad

    50. strandoftds says:

LMAO @ Denver Oranges. Yeah I probably would if I`m with my Broncos buddy from out in California. We went just about every year while the raiders were in L.A. I wouldn`t dare go by myself.
