2011 Preseason Slate Unveiled

April 12th, 2011 - 12:58pm by Gray Caldwell

UPDATED WITH DATES/TIMES APRIL 19 AT 4:42 P.M. MDT

April is arguably the most exciting month of a typical NFL offseason. Not only does the draft close out the month, but the next season’s schedule is released.

On Tuesday, with the draft a little more than two weeks away, the league offered up a precursor to the full schedule release, announcing the preseason slate.

The Broncos will take on three NFC teams in the preseason, along with an AFC team they will see again in the regular season.

The Buffalo Bills will open up the 2011 football season at INVESCO Field at Mile High when they travel to Denver in Week 2 of the preseason. The Broncos will return the favor and fly to Buffalo at some point during the regular season.

The other preseason home game comes in Week 3 against the Seattle Seahawks.

The Broncos hit the road in Weeks 1 and 4, playing in Dallas and Arizona, respectively. The Cardinals are the team’s second-most common preseason opponent, and the Cowboys are tied for third.

It marks the 14th consecutive year the team has opened the preseason on the road, extending the club record.

Head Coach John Fox, who holds a .528 winning percentage in the preseason as a head coach — coincidentally the exact same winning percentage the Broncos have in the preseason as a franchise — said he always looks forward to the exhibition slate.

“The preseason is an important time for us to evaluate our roster and get a better feel for our players,” Fox said. “It plays a big role in our regular-season preparation in terms of our timing and execution in all phases of the game.”

Denver has won at least one preseason game in every year but one — the club’s inaugural 1960 campaign.

The exact dates and times of each game will be announced later this month along with the team’s complete 2011 regular-season schedule.

“We are looking forward to competing against four quality opponents and getting the season started,” Fox said.

THANK YOU CDUD. For once I agree with u. Thats all ive ever said and other PP supporters have said. Theres no big gap. Also agree that Fairley is dirty. I wouldn’t say Paea is injury prone, he just got hurt in the senior bowl. No history of injuries and he impressed at his pro day and showed he was over it. But i agree with everything else.

for the record, not crying, i just don’t like when people believe i say one thing when im saying another. I just like to get facts straight but when It seems like im not gettign through, sometimes im inclined to get tired of talking cuz clearly we are at an impasse.

  2. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

The difference is that the upside is on the side of MD thats why he is rising in the boards if he was just one of the DEEP then he wouldn’t even be mentioned at No. 2 PP would be the obvious choice if thats the consensus then why has he fallen to No. 7? Its because a lot of people see that MD has played in an NFL style D and PP is still GREEN

  3. broncosfreak30 says:

I just really wish that Dareus would’ve played in a 4-3 in college so that we could know what we are really getting!! DT’s have more production in the 4-3 so I just wished we could have seen him in that system then that terrible 3-4 system!

  4. Cdudbronc24 says:

But his injury was a severe knee injury. Ask the Portland Trailblazers about taking guys with severe knee injurys

  5. 1nOnlyTRB says:

HA! the only reason he has fallen to 7 is based on NEED. What they believe all the teams need. Besides one person said PP to San Fran and a million followed like sheep because thats all mock drafters do, copy others logic and Board. PP has been dubbed arguably the best in the draft (along with MD) … only reason he isn’t in top contention is because they say CB’s don’t get taken that high, but WR has been taken at 2 before and they spend the same ammount of time on the field.

royalty says the best need is Dareus, Cam is the best need for a QB needy team but that doesn’t make him a good QB, it just means he is the best this draft class has to offer. I stand by the fact that there is not much distance between MD and the other DT’s. He does have the edge of being a SEC player but his production was average at best. But his combine numbers weren’t bad tho … except the fact that a 5’7 170 pound RB benched the same as him…..

  6. broncosfreak30 says:

    BroncoRoyalty…

Peterson hasn’t fallen what so ever. He is just viewed at getting picked at number 7 by the Niners due to all the teams picking biggest need instead of best player available!!! Peterson’s stock cannot rise anymore. He is the best player in this draft!!!

Carolina- Biggest need is QB, they make the mistake by taking Newton
Denver- Biggest need is DL, we take Dareus
Bills- Biggest needs are QB and LB, probably take Miller
Bengals- Biggest need is QB or maybe WR
Cardinals- Biggest need is QB so they would really want Gabbert (our trade partner)
Browns- Biggest need is WR, they take Green or Jones
Niners- Biggest need is DL and CB, take Peterson

If the teams were drafting this year for best player available as it should be then it would be

    Carolina- Peterson
    Broncos- Miller
    Bills- Dareus
    Bengals- Green
    Cardinals- Gabbert/Newton
    Browns- Jones
    Niners- Amukamara/Fairley/Quinn/QB

  7. broncosfreak30 says:

    Haha TRB…

We basically come out and post the exact same thing!!! We all over it man!!

  8. 1nOnlyTRB says:

true Cdud, but as a run stopping specialist I think he is worth it. Not to mention he managed to impress at his pro day just a short time after his injury when he wasn’t 100 percent, unlike a guy like Bowers. his injury wasnt that severe but yes its still a red flag hence why he will drop

  9. 1nOnlyTRB says:

lol freak cuz we do our homework. I’ve said it before, im cool no matter which way things go, I just know who i believe is the best and I have fact to back it up. simple. TRB out.

  10. broncosfreak30 says:

    TRB…

Also dead on with my earlier posts regarding his reps at the combine. Every article I read and videos I watch about Dareus basically says how he has “AMAZING STRENGTH”!!! He tied at 21 out of the 23 DT’s in the draft!!!

I already mentioned too that I looked it up and he had the LOWEST number of reps out of ALL DL in the combine who were 300 pounds or heavier!!

Marvin Austin weighs 309 and benched 38 reps and we all know that Paea put up 49 reps for the record!!!

Just like I said before, numbers speak for themselves!!!

  11. baylinorcrush says:

The triumvirate is who you guys need to convince, not us. And PP maybe the best in this draft but that doesn’t make him the best for us, simple as that.

  12. broncosfreak30 says:

I am right there with you bro!!

I have stats and numbers to back up my ideas/opinions!! Other people just saying that Dareus will be best “period” can’t back that up at all!! He didn’t have the GREAT stats that the top 5 players have and didn’t look like he had the strength either at the combine with reps!! I want players that will crush OL/RB/QB and will be able to push the pocket into the QB!!! Austin and Paea’s strength combined is UNSTOPPABLE!!! Just check the numbers if you don’t believe me!!!

The top two DL in reps at the combine:

    1. Paea
    2. Austin

  13. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Noel Divine, RB 5’7 175 benched 24 as well, ha.

Now benching doesn’t depict who will be dominant but neither does wonderlic. All that matter is tape and prior production.

As far as how much a need secondary is (freak already covered this)

Champ 33, moving to safety soon to prolong career
Goodman 32, always injured but above average when healthy
Cox, young but possibly going to prison
    Syd, shows promise
    Vaughn, Special teamer, KR/PR
    Hill 32, average at best
Dawkins 38, old as dirt but a warrior, we need to move on
    Bruton, Special Teamer
McBath, great promise but injury prone
    Barret, McDaniels gave away lol

Now tell me we don’t NEED secondary help lol. TRB out..

  14. broncosfreak30 says:

Bay you’re right on about the PP best in the whole draft part!! That’s why we should get him (the best player in the whole draft) and get some bulls in Paea, Austin, or Nevis!

And I have a question for all the Dareus fanatics out there!! What can Dareus do that Paea, Austin, and Nevis cannot do????

  15. baylinorcrush says:

OK, give us the list of our front 7, LOL, too funny.

  16. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Never denied front 7 is a need, yall are the ones that just seem to acta like secondary isn’t. I’m not to be one sighted. Ill be the first to say front 7 is a need, but a need that we can cover very well in the second round. Like u say, no point trying to convince the others, just proving my point lol.

  17. baylinorcrush says:

No Dareus fanatic here, that’s where you PP guiys lose us, no way one man is that important to me,
Dareus can do it all at a NFL level, the others can’t:

Bottom line: Dareus doesn’t make as many highlight-reel plays because Alabama’s scheme required him to do a lot of grunt work, but he is perhaps the most consistent player in the draft and is productive in every facet of the game. He can play in any scheme: Defensive tackle in a one-gap or two-gap 4-3 system or end in a 3-4 scheme. Dareus is a top-10 pick who could contend for the No. 1-overall spot, someone who will start from Day 1.

  18. broncosfreak30 says:

    TRB…

I will admit that our BIGGEST need is DL but just like I stated before this draft is HUGE with DL and there are great 1st round talent players that will be available in the 2nd/3rd round!!

Also it has been argued time and time again that Dareus might not be better than Fairley so there is a question there, however, no one has questioned that anyone is better than Peterson in this draft!! Peterson is NO DOUBT, the best CB in this draft. Dareus might be the best DT and then he might not be!!

What would you rather do, get a guy who will be good in the league and someone that you can find very close to talent, if not better, in the 2nd round, or take the undisputed best CB in the draft, even much more, BEST PLAYER IN THE DRAFT!!

There are 8-10 DL in this draft that could be immediate starters in the NFL. There are probably 3 CBs that have starter potential in the NFL, give or take 1!!

  19. sndvl says:

    I’ll bite-

    Dumervil-Vickerson-McBean-Ayers

    DJ-Mays-Haggan

(Woodyard, Larsen and Hunter as backups)

  20. baylinorcrush says:

Man that post got messed up, posted before ready, let’s start over:

No Dareus fanatic here, that’s where you PP guys lose us, no way one man is that important to me, I just want Dareus because he is the one who I believe can help us best start our rebuilding while you guys just fall inlove with a player because of his star status, HUGE DIFFERENCE, Different strokes for different folks, no big deal.

  21. broncosfreak30 says:

    Bay…

Peterson has by far more consistency than any other player in this draft, along with Miller. They have been playing lights out ever since they started their college careers!!! Dareus is very inconsistent which is why his numbers are not so big!! Plus as I mentioned before, he only seemed to really show up for the big (championship) games! Each time I hear someone talk about Dareus, the only thing I hear is them talking about how he knocked out Colt McCoy in the championship game!! Last year, I heard from everyone about how Suh had been playing lights out on every play!!!

  22. sndvl says:

Marcus Thomas is a FA as well as Bannan. I wouldn’t be surprised if 1 of the two make it back!

  23. baylinorcrush says:

So sndvl, you see no need for help there? LOL.

I see one solid guy, Doom, all the other ones are maybes or not at all.

  24. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Ha, we’ve been saying this for months. Heck forget months we’ve been saying this in the past few post. We don’t want to convert but a lil acknowledgement of these facts would be nice. But they refuse to and thats cool with me. I’ve had a PP v MD overdose today, tried for a while to let it go but I came right back in just to set some facts straight which I believe I did even tho they will fall on deaf ears. Im done. Here’s hoping EF-X Draft efficiently come D day. TRB out…

  25. 1nOnlyTRB says:

and theres one solid guy in the secondary, champ and he is not as young as doom. Lets not forget protecting against the run with a 4 man front will work better than with a 3 man front not built for the system which was what really hurt us in the 3-4 experiment. Just me…

  26. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

You all know I own a state of the art recording studio right? I hate to admit this lol but I sometimes put an intern in one of the studios thats not being used and record what Mayock McShay and Kiper say lol. I have actual recordings of these guys saying that MD is a far better pick for our team than PP at No.2 from Mayock to that freaking lady on NFL Live

Here’s some of the stuff I HAVE RECORDED:
    MD PROS
    Mayock:Relentless,Powerful,Tough, Competitive, a Broncos need
McShay: Physical, Talented, NFL Ready, can get after the QB
    Kiper: Consistent, Quick, Non-Stop Motor
Edwards: Anchor, Balanced,Can Play in space

    cons

-All agree his numbers were down in ’10 but did well in ‘09
-Only plays well in big games

and lets break down what freak30 said

    Dareus–
Weaknesses:

# Limited starting experience – only in 2010
#
Arm length – cant argue a something physical

# Needs to prove he can hold up in feature role – I debunk this with his well play in championship in games

    # Not going to make many tackles on his own – pads other players stats

# Tendency to get too upright – when playing at the 5 technique
    # Suspended for taking benefits from an agent – NOT TRUE unless a BBQ sandwich is a benefit.

    Peterson–
# Weaknesses:

# Looks for the big play; backfires sometimes – Will show more of that in NFL.

    # Run support needs a little improvement – Maybe can work on in practice.

    # Not as impressive in zone coverage – LOST.

# Smart quarterbacks could fool him – DUMB
.
    # Needs to work on technique discipline – DUMB AGAIN.

    LMAO!!!

  27. broncosfreak30 says:

Or I guess you could say that Dareus is consistent due to his lesser talent than the other top 5 guys.

    For example:

Dareus was extremely consistent with how he got 33 tackles in each of his 2009 and 2010 years.

Marvin Austin wasn’t consistent because he had 26 tackles in 2007, 35 tackles in 2008, and 42 tackles in 2009!!

I love the type of player that Austin and Paea are because their production goes up after each year they play!! Dareus stayed the same and I know he took on double blocks but so did Austin and Paea

  28. baylinorcrush says:

    Double that, LMAO…

  29. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

I’m joking he’s not dumb and if he does become a Bronco I will support him fully.

  30. sndvl says:

We need all 3 tiers. Where’s the tea party when you need em? (Von Miller)

  31. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Why we gotta be in love with peterson while u just think Dareus is the best? Not in love with Peterson here, like you just believe he is the best choice. I’m cool with who ever we get, im just trying to make my point and its a good one IMO. Only ever been “in love” with one bronco and that was Marshall (yea yea i know, not my brightest moment LOL). That’s just cuz I love the WR position more than any other position. TRB out…

  32. baylinorcrush says:

Well I think it must be a fact that just about the entire football world knows nothing about football since freak30 keeps telling us he has studied everything and Dareus is not worth the paper he is printed on. And on this note I will use the TRB wisdom and leave this particular blog alone since everything has already been said at least one hundred times over.

  33. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

But I hope that you PP guys will do the same for MD if he becomes a Bronco he should have our full support no matter what side of the debate your on.

  34. 1nOnlyTRB says:

WANN KNOW WHY DAREUS STATS WERE BETTER IN 2009 THAN 2010?!?!? CDUD already said it, because Mt Cody was eating up all the blockers. By himself in 2010 he could barely hold his own. So because he needs to work on his technique he is dumb? really? that doesn’t even count, all players need to work on their technique. I like how u sugar coated Dareus weakness and just said Dumb for PP…what an indepth analysis … HA!!! and smart QBs can fool any CB (hey look, I can sugar coat things too)

    “LMAO” …. TRB out…

  35. 1nOnlyTRB says:

lol i got sucked back in … im embarrassed of myself lol. TRB out…

  36. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Royalty, just for the record ill support whoever we get. Don’t gotta agree to support. If we don’t get Peterson this draft, this will not be the first time a player I thought was the best pick didn’t come to us and it sure as heck wont be the last lol. TRB out…

  37. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

Obviously you didn’t read the rest of the page…

  38. sndvl says:

Whoever the pick is I’ll support him. Haha, at least it’s no McD making the pick!

  39. baylinorcrush says:

And I just said you had wisdom, haha.

  40. broncosfreak30 says:

    BroncoRoyalty…

There is no argument here!!! Peterson had more turnovers than Dareus did and they also say that because Dareus’s position is our BIGGEST NEED!!! They never brought in the factor that Austin and Paea would probably be in the second round or how deep the DL class is this year. They only argued one pick out of all of our picks!!!

Btw…Dareus didn’t have ANY good years. I don’t know WHAT you are comparing his 2009 and 2010 stats for because they are one in the same but a difference of one more sack and one interception!!

    Dareus college production:

    2009- 33 tackles, 6 sacks, 1 interception 0 forced fumbles
    2010- 33 tackles, 5 sacks, 0 interceptions 0 forced fumbles

    Nevis college production:

    2007- 17 tackles, 0 sacks, 0 FF, 0 int
    2008- 16 tackles, 0 sacks, 1 FF, 0 int
    2009- 50 tackles, 4 sacks, 0 FF, 0 int
    2010- 56 tackles, 6 sacks, 2 FF, 1 int

    Peterson production:

    2008- 41 tackes, 1 FF, 1 int
    2009- 52 tackes, 2 int
    2010- 42 tackles, 4 int

Plus do I really need to give you the stats on his return skills and the # of returning TD’s that he had in college???

Go by the numbers, numbers are our friend!!
    2010

Stats speak for themselves my friend. Hell, I’d take Nevis’s 2010 year with Dareus WHOLE COLLEGE CAREER any day!!

  41. 1nOnlyTRB says:

haha, im sorry royalty, i missed that one liner where you took back your dumb comment, my post was already in the works. I’m not above admitting my wrong.

Yea bay, so much for my wisdom lol. TRB out..

  42. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

Finally I got all the PP guys to support Dareus. I’ll take that win LOL

  43. broncosfreak30 says:

Haha, glad to still see you here TRB!!

Check out my last post with Nevis compared to Dareus!!

  44. broncosfreak30 says:

    Royalty…

No one ever said that they wouldn’t support Dareus if we picked him. I would like to believe that everyone on here will support EVERY player that is in that orange and blue!

  45. 1nOnlyTRB says:

and by “dumb comment” i meant the post where u said “dumb” not that i thought ur comment was dumb, just to clarify lol. No ones opinion is dumb, TRB out…

  46. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

I know what you meant thanks for being trill about it though

  47. broncosfreak30 says:

    TRB…

We made our points. I provided every stat that I could. Just as you said earlier about “deaf ears”. I will support whomever we pick but I am just very strong about Peterson due to his extreme talent and the talent of DL in the 2nd and 3rd round!!!

It adds up just as P+P= Peterson and Paea

Numbers and production speak for themselves. I do not need to state that anymore!! Point is, Dareus has hardly any numbers while everyone else with 1st round potential seems to have at least 1 good year with great numbers!!!

  48. broncosfreak30 says:

I think that our we would have a better DL with Austin and Paea in the middle with Doom and Ayers on the ends. I would love to see people try to run it against us then. Also adding a 2nd round LB and our defense should automatically go up to at least top 15 I would think.

  49. 1nOnlyTRB says:

Haha thx royalty. Just learned a lil bit more about you by the use of the slang “trill” lol. TRB out..

  50. broncosfreak30 says:

    Check this out!!

Wouldn’t this be sweet if it happened!!!
