2011 NFL Draft: Day 3 Blog

April 30th, 2011 - 10:00am by Gray Caldwell

The final day of the draft is upon us, and rounds four through seven are about to begin. The Broncos have five picks today, starting with No. 108 overall.

Look below for a feature we found on Youtube on one of the newest Broncos, N.C. State linebacker Nate Irving.

10:33 a.m. MDT: The Broncos are on the clock at No. 108 in the fourth round.

10:37 a.m. MDT: The pick is in — Oklahoma safety Quinton Carter. We’ll have more on him on the front of DenverBroncos.com shortly.

11:34 a.m. MDT: The Broncos have traded up to the No. 129 overall selection, and have gone with Portland State tight end Julius Thomas. It was a trade with the Green Bay Packers. The Broncos received No. 129 and a seventh-rounder, No. 204, in exchange for a fifth and sixth rounder, No. 141 and No. 186.

The picks remaining are Nos. 189, 204 and 247. That’s a sixth and two sevenths. We’ll have more on Thomas on the front of DenverBroncos.com shortly.

2:24 p.m. MDT: The Indianapolis Colts are on the clock at No. 188, so the Broncos select next. Sorry for the lack of updates on the blog, with yesterday’s picks visiting the building and so much action on the draft board today, we’re trying to bring you as much content on the front of DenverBroncos.com as possible. Looks like Indy’s pick is in as I type this, so the Broncos are on the clock.

2:26 p.m. MDT: Denver’s pick is in — Mike Mohamed, inside linebacker from California. We’ll have more information on the two-time All-Pac 10 player on the front of DenverBroncos.com shortly.

3:05 p.m. MDT: The Broncos are on the clock with the first pick in the seventh round. Denver has one pick remaining after this one at No. 247.

3:07 p.m. MDT: The pick is in, and it’s Nevada tight end Virgil Green. We’ll have more on Green on the front of DenverBroncos.com shortly.

5:03 p.m. MDT: The Broncos’ final pick is one spot away — Cincinnati is on the clock at No. 246, and Denver’s last selection comes at 247. After the pick, check DenverBroncos.com for more information, and be sure to head to the 2011 NFL Draft page for all the coverage in a central location.

5:05 p.m. MDT: RB Jay Finley from Baylor heads to the Bengals, and the Broncos are on the clock…

5:09 p.m. MDT: The pick is in — it’s Oklahoma defensive end Jeremy Beal. In his career, he racked up 223 tackles and 29 sacks in his career, earning 2010 Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year.

That’ll do it for the draft blog. We’ll have even more content on the site later today.

Green apparently can run a 4.45 but ran a 4.55 at the combine!! Got some great targets for Tebow!!

  2. Ikiratuki says:

Lee Ziemba from Auburn would be a steal OL pick if he’s still there.

  3. atwaters da man says:

I love the Green pick! Wow I cannot believe he lasted until the 7th round. I was so bummed when we didn’t take Ruloph…now I stoked :) Great job boyz!!

  4. strandoftds says:

I wonder whats going to happen with Cox, even if he`s acquitted.

  5. royalbroncofan1 says:

I love the fact we picked all the defensive players plus the two TE’s !!
and the O-lineman from the Univ of Miami.
    I’ll give it an 8!! :-)

  6. collies10 says:

Yeah happy with draft myself. Think the two tight ends tell us Tebow starts from day 1. Safety valve for the main man. Think I might have to pay for game pass looking forward to season. 1 thing for certain will not be as bad as last year. I give the draft a 7. Have to trust the men in charge.

  7. strandoftds says:

One more pick. I wonder what position. Hopefully a FB.

  8. pepper7mm says:

it’s nice to have a draft that gives hope and faith in those making the selections. something we have missed for a ew years.

  9. tnalen66 says:

I am disapointed cuz AGAIN no DTs drafted! How many years have we needed a DTand have not drafted any.

  10. broncofanak says:

here is a free agent dt that i found on walterfootball.com

Brandon Mebane, DT, Seahawks. Age: 26.
Brandon Mebane has always been great against the run; this year, he added some pass-rushing skills to his repertoire, allowing him to serve as an every-down player in Seattle’s defense.

at this point i think all we really need is a run stuffer, to pair with vickerson and maybe thomas in a rotation. also having bannan back for one more year would be ok.

  11. strandoftds says:

Besides the FB Owen Marecic I had my eye on Anthony Sherman from Connecticut FB.

  12. strandoftds says:

Fanak, Brandon Mebane was mentioned todat in the Denver Post along side other DT`s. If Mebane is only 26 ang great against the run then why not. I know nothing about him but just hear say. Perfect age I think.

  13. dpbroncos says:

can anyone please explain why they have not drafted a d-lineman? what is goin on here. with 3 good running backs in our division this should been a great concern in the draft

  14. broncofanak says:

yeah i hadn’t really heard of him much either, tho i like that he’s 26 too. i think with ayers, doom, and miller, we have plenty of pass rush. we just need somebody to stuff the middle imo.

  15. strandoftds says:

Guys, get off the DT train. There`s a method to the maddness. TRUST THE POWERS THAT BE!!!!!!

  16. strandoftds says:

I do agree with ya big time. Lets just trust the Johns and XMan huh.

  17. broncofanak says:

dont have much choice do we? :)

  18. strandoftds says:

I`m over it already. We`ll fix it. They Johns and Xman are not going to leave us hanging. No way!!

  19. broncofanak says:

btw i like the Xman name for Xanders…

  20. strandoftds says:

Somethings going on. We don`t know what but lets be patient.

  21. strandoftds says:

He`s cool. He`s a young good GM and one day could be brilliant.

  22. dpbroncos says:

im all forward to trust the powers to be. however you can not trust free agency or trades. the one thing they do have control over is drafting a player who is young…as everyone wants.

we are in so much better shape already with ELWAY#7 and a coach like FOX. cant wait to see what it all MEANS…?

    go broncos!!

  23. thatdude807 says:

I read broncos was trying to get back in the 1st rd to get Fairley, but it cost to much… And they liked Jarvis Jenkins, but the redskins had pick him when the broncos traded back… So i think they wanted to grab a DT, but it didn’t work in their favor

  24. strandoftds says:

FA should only be to fill a few holes. Not half of the darn team. But I hear you and you are speaking words of wisdom. And I completely agree with what you said the two Johns. We are heading in the right direction.

  25. broncofanak says:

and if they really want a dt there is still ian williams and lawrence guy. but whatever they want is cool;they get paid to do this…:)

  26. broncosfreak30 says:

    I give our draft grade a A-.

We got the best LB and pass rusher in the draft!
    We got the best S.
We got the most physical OT in Franklin who is a beast and has incredibly long arms!
We got an amazing LB in Irvin who hits like Ray Lewis!
We got Carter who hits like Dawkins/Reed
We got Thomas and Green who are both amazing pass catching TE’s and run very fast for as big as they are

We completely drafted a new defense, a defense that will have speed and immense physicality to it!!

Like my man Miller says, “It’s time for the Orange Crush to roll”

  27. dpbroncos says:

thanks strandoftds… just needed a little confirmation on how i am feeling…lol…

    go broncos!!!

  28. UKBroncos says:

Freak – loving your enthusiasm! That’s how I usually feel.

Just one DT and I think we’d all be loving the moves.

    But the UK has faith….

  29. WieminCA says:

If you focus on what the Broncos GOT, you have to give this draft a high grade … to get Carter and Green where we got them, makes it look like we had 7 picks in the first 4 rounds … I hope they get this legal stuff settled, because I’m very anxious to watch these guys play …

  30. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

Hey strand whats up bro? Sorry I didn’t catch your post earlier I’ve been on and off just checking in and what not but about the lockout you’re right man, this aint over yet. I knew the owners would get the win in appeals court, the players will never see the books going back 10-15 years lol I don’t know why they thought they would. The players just need to take what they can get,let this thing play out, head back to the table and get this thing going already so these new guys can get a playbook in their hands. These new Safety’s are gonna need as much time with Dawkins as they can get.

I’m wondering what our new offense will look like with these new TE’s. We’ll probably play a lot of two TE sets and with our new zone blocking scheme and with the new OT Tebow will have the opportunity to roll out on play action look deep and still have the opportunity to hit a fast TE coming underneath on a drag… or drop back look vertically up the middle with a TE post when seeing an opposing safety bite on play action. We should have a lot of mismatches with these fast TE’s.

    -Royalty

  31. The Dane says:

    wow, Jeremy Beal

  32. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

Of course it all starts with the run when you’re talking PA so I hope we can get that going on offense… Moreno needs to stay healthy maybe we can get Bush he’s fragile too though so IDK I just hope we can run. AND REALLY HOPE we can stop the run somehow! lol

  33. pepper7mm says:

Beal is a steal at this pick. Played DE, we’ll see where Fox wants him to play. I’m excited about this pick

  34. broncofanak says:

maybe ayers moves inside and beal goes to DE? or vice versa?

  35. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

Jeremy Beal, Oklahoma, 6-2, 262 OLB
    Overview
Beal’s not a highlight machine, nor will his average speed make him one. The lack of attention will be nothing new to Beal. Oklahoma didn’t offer him a scholarship when he attended their summer camp because of his underwhelming athletic testing. But all he did as a Sooner was become of the more consistent, productive 3-4 end/linebacker combo players in the country.

Beal made a great impression as a redshirt freshman in 2007 with 25 tackles, five for loss and a sack — including six tackles with a sack in the Big 12 Championship Game win over Missouri. He started all 14 games in 2008 as a sophomore, earning second-team all-conference recognition from league coaches after racking up 61 tackles, 11.5 for loss, 8.5 sacks, four pass breakups and three forced fumbles. Beal was a Hendricks Award finalist and coaches’ second-team All-Big 12 pick (many publications had him as a first-teamer) as a junior when he had 70 tackles, 19 for loss, 11 sacks and three forced fumbles.

Beal was the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and a first-team All-Big 12 pick in 2010, putting up 66 tackles, 18 for loss, 8.5 sacks, six pass breakups and three forced fumbles. Oklahoma coaches stand him up, put his hand down, and even played him in the middle in 2009 due to injuries at the position.

NFL scouts will likely feel the same way Bob Stoops did when he saw Beal’s high school game film: they will want to have the well-rounded, hard-working and intelligent player.

A three-time first-team All-Big 12 pick by the AP, Beal was also named the conference Defensive Player of the Year as a senior by the Dallas Morning News after leading the Big 12 with 18 tackles for loss and pacing the Sooners with 8.5 sacks. Beal’s consistency is one of his calling cards; he’s the first player in school history with at least 8.5 sacks in three different seasons. That’s a lot of production for someone who wasn’t initially offered a scholarship due to underwhelming natural athleticism (5.14 40, 28 1/2-inch vertical at the combine). Beal has played with his hand down, standing up and in the middle, but will likely have to earn his NFL paycheck as an inside linebacker due to his lack of speed. – Jeff Reynolds, The Sports Xchange

  36. strandoftds says:

Ya, Beal is a LB/DE. We`ll see. If he`s at LB that makes 4 LB`s. A change in the wind.

  37. strandoftds says:

And Royalty, good stuff man. I`m also eager to see our new Offense and defense as well. Two catching TE`s, that was surprising.

  38. royalbroncofan1 says:

    Thx for the scoop Royalty.

  39. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

4 LB’s wow man we needed a new LB corps and there it is. We got LB drunk this year. LMAO!

  40. strandoftds says:

Something is up! He may be a DE. We`re not sure what Denver is gonna do with him yet but am looking forward to see wwere they do put him. This is exciting stuff. The draft is over.

  41. strandoftds says:

Next a new CBA agreement, whenever that is. And then finally FA. The domino effect so to speak.

  42. strandoftds says:

We all got drunk with it. Some sort of spiked orange cool-aid. Not only a double dose but a QAUD!! LMAO!!

  43. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

Yeah he’ll probably play with his hands down. Like you said strand something is up.

  44. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

    LMAO!!!!

  45. strandoftds says:

That two TE sets you mentioned along with Tebow doing his thing is going to be fun to see. God, I can`t wait. Just the thought of what our offense can do is scary. I love it!!

  46. strandoftds says:

Our defense is going in the right direction now. And ST needs a big upgrade so we`ll see how that unfolds.

  47. strandoftds says:

Not one RB nor FB. Hmmmmmmm. Can you say FA. I`d still like RB DeAngelo Williams from the Panthers.

  48. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

Yeah when they threw it to the guy talking on behalf of the Broncos for the draft, he didn’t even mention our picks he was all Tebow talk. He was quoting Tebow “I believe in them and they believe in me,” (talking about the triumvirate) Tebow said. “I’m working on what Elway said will make me excel in this league, throwing from the pocket.”

  49. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

Yeah I wanted another RB as well so we can get some play action going and not have to leave it on KO or TT’s shoulders. I can see how they may want an older RB though with blocking schemes and what not. FA seems like the route to go. Man I already wanna see a game lol like I said the other day the draft is like Christmas Day, you get to see what new toys you have to play with. Unfortunately we have to sit on our hands while the NFL & Players figure out which portions of the Christmas Day turkey they divide up only problem is they both want the whole thing LOL!!!!

  50. strandoftds says:

    Well heck ya!!!
