Day two of the 2011 NFL Draft is here, but the draft is still about five hours away. In the meantime, you can check out Denver’s first-round pick, Von Miller, on ESPN’s Sport Science below.
Today, Miller will meet the press, so we will have complete coverage of his visit including a live stream of the press conference. In addition, players are back at the facility, some working out, some simply saying hello to coaches and teammates and picking up their playbook. We will also post a story about that development, all before the second day of the draft actually begins. When that happens, the Broncos currently have two second-round picks and a third-rounder. Head to the draft page for all of DenverBroncos.com’s coverage, and as always leave your comments on the day’s developments below.
3:32 p.m. MDT: We’re less than 30 minutes away from the start of the second round of the draft. The Broncos have the fourth pick of the round as well as the 14th, so there could be plenty of action early on for Denver. Keep in mind it will be new Pro Football Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe announcing the second-round picks today, one of many NFL legends that will take the stage.
3:37 p.m. MDT: For a quick mid-draft look at some mocks, SI.com’s Don Banks has a second-round mock draft, as do ESPN.com’s Mel Kiper and Todd McShay. Banks has Denver taking North Carolina defensive tackle Marvin Austin and Notre Dame tight end Kyle Rudolph with their two second rounders. Kiper sees Texas cornerback Aaron Williams and Iowa defensive tackle Christian Ballard coming to Denver, and McShay predicts that Oregon State defensive tackle Stephen Paea and Washington inside linebacker Mason Foster will don orange and blue. So there are plenty of names out there.
4:20 p.m. MDT: The Broncos are on the clock…and it appears they have struck a trade with the San Francisco 49ers. From San Fran, the Broncos have received the 45th pick in the second round, which means Denver now has back-to-back picks at 45 and 46. In addition, Denver has the 108th and 141st picks in the draft.
4:29 p.m. MDT: Marshisboss said it in the comments already, but for those wondering, the 108th pick is a fourth-rounder — the 11th in the round — and the 141st pick is a fifth-rounder — the 10th in the round.
5:00 p.m. MDT: Detroit’s pick is in at No. 44 — Boise State receiver Titus Young — so the Broncos are on the clock for their first of back-to-back picks.
5:05 p.m. MDT: The pick at No. 45 is in — UCLA safety Rahim Moore — and the Broncos are back on the clock at No. 46.
5:20 p.m. MDT: The pick is Miami offensive lineman Orlando Franklin. More on both players on the front of DenverBroncos.com shortly.
6:00 p.m. MDT: You can read more on both of the team’s second-round picks here. The Broncos pick next at No. 67 in the third round. Looks like pick No. 56 is in, so that’s coming shortly.
6:45 p.m. MDT: Apparently the Broncos are on the clock, but picks No. 65 and 66 have yet to be announced. Here comes Carolina’s pick at No. 65 — South Florida defensive tackle Terrell McClain.
6:47 p.m. MDT: Cincinnati’s pick is Nevada outside linebacker Dontay Moch. Denver’s selection should be announced shortly…
6:49 p.m. MDT: Denver takes Nate Irving, inside linebacker from NC State. We’ll have more on him on the front of DenverBroncos.com shortly.
7:40 p.m. MDT: That’ll just about do it for the blog today. The Broncos have five more picks on day three of the draft. Be sure to visit the draft page for all of our coverage of the weekend.

also I was reading some were that bill Parcels had nate Irving ranked pretty high that can’t be a bad thing maybe the old guard has some secrets lol
Good to hear that steve, Parcells’ words do carry some weight.
indeed so what players are you looking at today I would like to get colin Mcarthy Kyle Mcarty’s brother even though we have LB’s either him or clay Mathews brother lol
To tell you the truth, I got off the draft watching after we picked our #67, so I don’t know who is off the board or not, but a FB to me is an essential component of a Fox O and since we don’t really have a legitimate one on the roster, I would pick FB Marecic with the newly found 4th round pick, and after that I’d like a couple DTs, a CB and a RB with the remaining 4 picks.
http://packinsider.com/2011/04/nate-irving/
there are allot of new site with the info bu ive always like to go to fan sites.I do like the fact that most of the players we have taken have all been team leaders it will really help our locker room
I think we have enough LBs now specially for the 43 and there are no TEs left worthy of picking, plus I think Quinn is exactly what Fox likes to rely on, a big blocking TE for the running game as he has shown that he could care less about using a TE in the passing game, therefore I was myself very happy that Rudolph was off the board, so no temptations there on a guy who tore his hamstring to the bone.
I agree with us needing a full back for are”awesome returning”zone blocking scheme so happy that Moreno will finally get his shot at 1,00 yard season
Thanks for that link steve, it helps me backup my “reach” point about Irving:
■Mel Kiper picks him to go mid-to-late on Day 3 (Rounds 4-7)
■NFLdraftscout.com picked him to be drafted in the 4th round (6th ILB)
■Walterfootball.com picked him to be drafted in the 5th round (7th ILB)
■NFL.com picked him to be drafted in the 3rd or 4th round (6th ILB)
Only NFL.com has him as a “potential” 3rd rounder (3rd OR 4th), and we picked him with #67, only the third pick in the third, something is obviously off with that picture.
I tend to agree, Moreno will probably get 100 yards before he gets hurt, LOL.
lets hope my typo wasn’t a curse.I just hope we got a new conditioning coach.also I do think it’s strange that so many people have Irving ranked differently but il say this from watching the guy he does the one thing we need most on D “tackle” so many times have I seen Baily as the only person saving our team from a TD and when your starting corner is your best Tackler that’s not good lol
still i would rather see a reach in the third round then the first last year “cough cough” no offense to anyone but we all know the story
It looks as if Fox is finally coming around and fessing up to not having addressed the DT position yet, as reported by Krieger:
In a startling development, the Broncos announced late Friday night that they will switch to a spread defense next season.
That’s right, no defensive tackles at all. Just pass rushers, linebackers and defensive backs.
OK, they didn’t exactly announce this. But I heard it from sources.
OK, I didn’t exactly hear it from sources. I’m just trying to explain how the Broncos’ new brain trust has come through four picks and three rounds of the NFL draft without addressing their most obvious need.
“I would have felt better if we could have gotten a defensive tackle a little bit earlier,” coach John Fox admitted afterward.
It’s not exactly like you didn’t have a shot at a good one FOX, you only have yourself to blame in that debacle, ignoring the DT position was obviously a major blunder of the organization no matter how anyone spins it!
Now all you got left there is crumbs Fox, very, very disappointed to hear all that, I thought he had a great master plan about DTs nobody knew about but apparently not, it’s just a gigantic blunder, 32nd against the run and nobody addressed it with the first 4 picks.
A disgruntled fan right now, unbelievable!!!!!
wow parcels has prince rated higher then Peterson so I have no idea what to think about that lol.
http://corner.bigblueinteractive.com/index.php?mode=2&thread=403347
Only explanation to all this is Fox and Parcells are getting OLD, and are not alltogether there at all times, LOL. But Fox, you’re not that old, I got 4 years on you, eat right, exercise, do crossword puzzles, keep that brain sharpe, you can do it, this is too big not to, but what a HUGE lapse of brain function on the wrong day! And Xanders and Elway couldn’t figure that one out either, my gosh, a giant combined brain freeze, not a single DT on board!
I think the broncos are having 1 of the best drafts in a long time despite grabbing a DT… NATE IRVING is a great pic, ppl need to do their homework on him…. http://www.denverpost.com/broncos/ci_17963432… go to you tube and check his highlights out, u won’t be disappointed… Fox, Elway, and Xanders is doing a fine job
no idea what they were thinking either, maybe free agency but still I do agree as good as miller is,if no one can stop the run they won’t need to pass on us at all
i do think vickerson has some potential though and he is pretty huge maybe they think if they just plug in huge guys at DT and have good LB’s that we can stop the run in a different manner either way we should be better then last year and this process of rebuilding is going to take more then one draft ,so they might be thinking we can get better DT’s next year and focus on they scheme and play book of the D this year.to be honest I don’t think we have near enough talent at QB to even compete in the first place no offense just saying with being so unsure if it will be Orton Or Tebow on the field.tat I have no Idea how we are planing to win our division .But that’s the analyst side of me the fan side of me see’s us doing great so I guess I will just have to wait and see
PS:I like how Quinn is mentioned by Elway and fox as being in the discussion of starter I still think given the chance with our WR”S he could shine
Let me guess, I put my house up against your one dollar that you are one of the thousands who said McD was doing a good job in the draft at the time, just saying. I’m talking realistically here not just being the everything is going along marvelously in every regard type of fanatical fan stuff. I say so far they did 60% of things well in the draft, the first two picks and the trade, that’s just a little over 50%, meaning slightly above average, nothing that qualifies as a “fine job”, just my opinion. It’s a mixed bag so far.
steve, I hear all you are saying, but what I am saying is Fox said:
“I would have felt better if we could have gotten a defensive tackle a little bit earlier.”
I rest my case.
And if your are a Brady Quinn hopeful, this discussion must stop immediately, hahahaha!
I know I was agreeing with you they got a little greedy taking guys to early while very decent DT’s were still on the board lol all im trying to add is that maybe we can pull of some steals in the later rounds,if not i guess another year with below average DT’s
Absolutely correct: Greedy = “Reach”.
hey Brady will always be someone I cheer for just beacuse my college team is ND but that’s the fan side of me I know in my mind that everyone hates him and that he’ll probably never be a good QB but I have to have some faith in my guys lol
Good for you, it’s what fans do.
indeed but besides that I think Tebow did show allot of good things last year and I have changed my mind at least a little bit about him”still not the savior”but I saw some potential in his leadership abilities and have rethink and closely watch him to see how far he proves me wrong lol
I’m going to be positive here, maybe we can improve our run D from 32nd in the league to breaking into the upper twenties, LOL.
that’s the way we have to think glass half full or else it’s no fun to watch football.maybe we beat the chargers this year that would be nice or even take down the super bowl champs in lambeau lol
You just lost your house.. Anyway fox said there are a couple more DTs left that they are interested in… We will see how well the broncos did when the season starts….
BTW, freak30 must be completely freaked out, I haven’t seen him once since the first round, no PP or no trade downs of the #2 like in all his “want’s” scenarios, not a single DT when he was adamant on getting two, that’s enough right there to have put him in the looney bin, haha. Wishing you prompt recovery!
No one can analyze a draft until two years down the road, but they did say we need 4 immediate starters out of this draft, so I guess we will find out if that turns out in September.
And I don’t have a house, I have a trailer… I lied… like the Triumvirate, LOL.
No, that was another lie, good day for lying, it’s the flavor of the moment, LOL.
no idea I know that traumatic things happen they can make the best of us snap,McDaniels almost made me homeless this year with how sad I was with his decisions lol, also seeing Hillis announcing the browns pick and the whole madden thing made me rethink all of the stupid things our old coach did……….im convinced that he was put here by the patriots to ruin our franchise for beating them so much with shanny lol
Pete Prisco on CBS sports said that Nate Irving may end up being the steal of the draft. He was under the radar due to missing 09 from the car crash. But consistently had a knack for making tackels behind the line of scrimmage. bay, I’m upset we didn’t get a DT as well but we can’t take that out on Irving. He was the emotional leader at NC state and we can all agree we need that on our D.
http://www.justspotted.com/spotting/brady-quinn-kyle-orton/denverbroncos-qbs-kyle-orton-amp-brad/
this is why tebow will end up getting the job because while he’s practicing they are eating steak in vegas
I have faith that they know more than we do. And you can’t judge picks until years later in some cases. McD might have pulled the biggest steal of all time with Tebow, we just don’t know yet. I’d certainly rather have him than any of the jokers in this years class. If we hadn’t got Tebow, we’d have ended up with one of them this year!
As for run D, the LB’s have been as guilty as the DT’s over the last few years, not smart enough, not quick enough, not leaders, over-pursuing etc.
We’ve definitely improved. There’s still some run-stuffing beef available, maybe one will turn out to be great value, even if just on 1st / 2nd down or in rotation. They’ll certainly get a shot!
Keep the faith Bronco fans – the UK has faith!
I say we take Chritian Ballard DT from Iowa in the 4th or Jerrel Powe from Miss. Powe 6’2 325
I disagree if we hadn’t have wasted so many picks on tebow we would have won more games.but then again mcdufus might have drafted some kicker and 3 more WR’s so I have no idea that guy was crazy
Not taking anything out on Irving, I simply said he was a “reach”, he would of been there in the fourth, that being said I remember last year’s steal of the draft, Cox, not that his problems were the same, character flaws instead of injuries, but it’s still a shot in the dark.
He generated those picks by trading down though, 2 thirds and a forth if I remember correctly, then used one of the thirds and the forth to move from the second back into the first.
No way he would have fallen to our second pick. Look at the ridiculous run on QB’s this year.
Tebow Time, Miller Time……
Ok, even so it’s only Saturday, it looks like if time has come to turn the blog over to the Faith, plus I need to go do some shopping, cheerio!
Either way I’m just happy where adding speed to our defense. We have been slow for years. That will make a big difference.
we’re* not where…I need to proof read!!
he would have fallen his throwing motion at the time was atrocious I have to say that if he turns out good then it was a great pick but the odds are against him elway even said he has along way to go and is no were near starting so to me for a team with horrible defense last year yeah we could have used those picks on anything to help us.
PS:im not saying Tebow is bad im just saying that it was a big reach when only a maybe 2 teams besides us were interested we could have got him in the second at least
also yes QB run this year that was not the case last year only 2 QB”s were taken in the 1st and that’s because we panicked to take him but just like us looking at QB”s this year in the draft most teams are trying to smoke screen there picks to make people nervous and MCdaniels was stupid enough to fall for it
We’ll never know whether someone else was interested – there too nervous to admit it in case he either busts or turns into a legend!
Legend I hope!
*they’re
Anybody else think Jerrel Powe could be our next pick….I think we worked him out at some point. And he is a man mountain!
we shall see I hope so to because as much criticism as i gave Tebow when we first got him I think he’s on the right course to improve and he is a great leader..
just can’t wait to see who else is going to our team im crazy about the draft
it seems that were going by best player on our board so we’ll have to wait and see if we rated the kid that high but if we get any DT’s I will be happy lol
Powe’s scouting report from nfl.com
Powe could become an effective run-stopping, two-gap defensive tackle or possibly a 3-4 nose tackle due to his tremendous size and lower body strength. Usually requires a double team in the running game. Does more than just eat space, he can penetrate and also make some plays outside the box. Can push the pocket with his bull rush but needs to polish up his technique and moves. Like many other bid-bodied DT’s, needs to watch his conditioning level. Gets plays off and becomes less dominant against the run later in games. Powe could entice a team to select him as high as the second round
