2011 NFL Draft: Day 2 Blog

April 29th, 2011 - 11:05am by Gray Caldwell

Day two of the 2011 NFL Draft is here, but the draft is still about five hours away. In the meantime, you can check out Denver’s first-round pick, Von Miller, on ESPN’s Sport Science below.

Today, Miller will meet the press, so we will have complete coverage of his visit including a live stream of the press conference. In addition, players are back at the facility, some working out, some simply saying hello to coaches and teammates and picking up their playbook. We will also post a story about that development, all before the second day of the draft actually begins. When that happens, the Broncos currently have two second-round picks and a third-rounder. Head to the draft page for all of DenverBroncos.com’s coverage, and as always leave your comments on the day’s developments below.

3:32 p.m. MDT: We’re less than 30 minutes away from the start of the second round of the draft. The Broncos have the fourth pick of the round as well as the 14th, so there could be plenty of action early on for Denver. Keep in mind it will be new Pro Football Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe announcing the second-round picks today, one of many NFL legends that will take the stage.

3:37 p.m. MDT: For a quick mid-draft look at some mocks, SI.com’s Don Banks has a second-round mock draft, as do ESPN.com’s Mel Kiper and Todd McShay. Banks has Denver taking North Carolina defensive tackle Marvin Austin and Notre Dame tight end Kyle Rudolph with their two second rounders. Kiper sees Texas cornerback Aaron Williams and Iowa defensive tackle Christian Ballard coming to Denver, and McShay predicts that Oregon State defensive tackle Stephen Paea and Washington inside linebacker Mason Foster will don orange and blue. So there are plenty of names out there.

4:20 p.m. MDT: The Broncos are on the clock…and it appears they have struck a trade with the San Francisco 49ers. From San Fran, the Broncos have received the 45th pick in the second round, which means Denver now has back-to-back picks at 45 and 46. In addition, Denver has the 108th and 141st picks in the draft.

4:29 p.m. MDT: Marshisboss said it in the comments already, but for those wondering, the 108th pick is a fourth-rounder — the 11th in the round — and the 141st pick is a fifth-rounder — the 10th in the round.

5:00 p.m. MDT: Detroit’s pick is in at No. 44 — Boise State receiver Titus Young — so the Broncos are on the clock for their first of back-to-back picks.

5:05 p.m. MDT: The pick at No. 45 is in — UCLA safety Rahim Moore — and the Broncos are back on the clock at No. 46.

5:20 p.m. MDT: The pick is Miami offensive lineman Orlando Franklin. More on both players on the front of DenverBroncos.com shortly.

6:00 p.m. MDT: You can read more on both of the team’s second-round picks here. The Broncos pick next at No. 67 in the third round. Looks like pick No. 56 is in, so that’s coming shortly.

6:45 p.m. MDT: Apparently the Broncos are on the clock, but picks No. 65 and 66 have yet to be announced. Here comes Carolina’s pick at No. 65 — South Florida defensive tackle Terrell McClain.

6:47 p.m. MDT: Cincinnati’s pick is Nevada outside linebacker Dontay Moch. Denver’s selection should be announced shortly…

6:49 p.m. MDT: Denver takes Nate Irving, inside linebacker from NC State. We’ll have more on him on the front of DenverBroncos.com shortly.

7:40 p.m. MDT: That’ll just about do it for the blog today. The Broncos have five more picks on day three of the draft. Be sure to visit the draft page for all of our coverage of the weekend.

potter, those are total tackles. half of them are solo and half of them are assists. look at TRB’s espn link

for those interested if they havent looked it up themselves. about 15 min youtube on Irvings play.

  3. strandoftds says:

Maybe resign Bannon. Don`t know what to expect at DT now. Trippy to understand.

  4. royalbroncofan1 says:

Wow – talk about another sleeper in the draft.
Franklin was projected to go in 2-3 round. He didn’t participate at the Combine or Pro Day workout. He’s listed over at walterfootball.com under the Guards where he was ranked 5th.
O-line Coach Dave Magazu had to have had some buy in for this selection. Coach Magazu is one of the best o-line coaches in the NFL, so this kid better be ready to work hard.

    Orlando Franklin, G, Miami
    Height: 6-6. Weight: 319.
    Projected 40 Time: 5.24.
    Benchx225: 26. Arm: 35.
    Projected Round (2011): 2-3.
3/27/11: Orlando Franklin doesn’t believe in running the 40, apparently. He had an OK Pro Day; most observers seemed to believe that he’s pretty much just a guard even though he has the arm length to be a tackle.

holy crap there is mex bronco and bronco mex lol. didnt even notice. for all i know proly thought it was same person lol

  8. royalbroncofan1 says:

Typo on there, Franklin did have a pro day workout.

  9. broncosmex says:

hahahahahaha! Copyright sir! I made this account first so change it now! no mex on your name plz! lol jk

  10. Cdudbronc24 says:

I think Franklin will play right tackle. Kuper is a good right guard and beadles is a young developing left guard

  11. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

    The BroncosChicanos lol

  12. pepper7mm says:

johnny white, Rb 4th round pick?

  13. samurai713 says:

5 picks left, can we get any(more?) quality players out of this. I’ve looked up our new guys, and the only one I worry about (he did have solid stats) is Nate Irving, we’ll see what comes of it I suppose.

  14. broncosmex says:

Pepper I think, for Christ sake, it should be DT..

  15. Mikew007 says:

This is smart draft management. If Elway stays with it for a few years, the Broncos will be back with a strong core. This is his FIRST draft and it is a very solid, no frills draft.

It’s Miller Time! Von is going to be all over the field and Moore is going to be a player. Franklin will start with Harris leaving…at guard I suppose. That’s three starters. Irving is a wild card for me…no idea what we got there but overall, I’m happy.

Free agency will happen and I bet Foxy already has a couple guys he is bringing in to play DT.

  16. strandoftds says:

What do you all think of the LOCKOUT being reinstated? I`m for the owners!!!!

  17. pepper7mm says:

haha, mex i have given up on DT, i think Brancos staff have faith in the line we already have. if they didnt they would have pulled the trigger already. have faith, that seems to be the theme for the later rounds of this draft

  18. samurai713 says:

I want football, I kind of don’t care who wins anymore..

  19. Cdudbronc24 says:

i agree with samurai. the only thing i think that needs to be changed is a rookie wage scale. all that extra money can be given to retired players

  20. strandoftds says:

Without all of the owners running a bussiness there`s no NFL football to watch. No money, no teams, no NFL. It`s that simple to figure out.

  21. royalbroncofan1 says:

Franklin was selected to play right tackle (replace Harris).
He does outweigh Harris by 20 lbs.

  22. samurai713 says:

but if the players walk away from it then the quality will go down too…both sides are greedy, otherwise we would have had a deal by now.

  23. broncos20 says:

    oh man, waiting again???

The way I look at the Irving pick, atleast we go our ‘natural’ mike linebacker..
i’v a feeling the Packers could take Casey if they see him around later..

  24. BroncoRoyaltyEst.1979 says:

That youtube on Irving that TRB posted was kind of saddening he looks like he makes a lot of arm tackles (which will NOT fly in the NFL) and gets caught out of position a lot. He shows flashes of good but he’s going to need to hit the weight room for sure, I’m hoping for the best…

  25. atwaters da man says:

I can’t believe we got two Butkus Award, finalist in Irving and Miller. Solid boyz!
Also Franklin looks like a beast…wow…talk about tough

  26. atwaters da man says:

BTW there have been 13 DT’s taken so far…i think we will be better served with Tommie Harris or Kris Jenkins personally

  27. bones1965 says:

this is one of the best DT dafts in years and xanders picks irving who is supposed to be a late 4th round pick.

when is this team going to get it right.

how about Kendrick Ellis 345 pounds fom hampton.

who will play dt for this team. Tommie Harris and Jenkins are old. Remember Bannan and Williams. this is the worst team against the rush and they draft another linebacker who is slated as a 3- 4 backer.

    Xanders?

  28. 1nOnlyTRB says:

whoever you want, just say we wont take em and i gaurantee you we do LOL. Man I wish we coulda traded that early 3rd for more picks. Im sure Irving woulda been around 10 picks later or whatever lol.

The goal was to get 4 starters so EF-X is pretty much saying Irving is a starter. Or has starting potential which is saying alot. Interesting stuff I tell ya.

4th pick. Clearly we are not getting DT this draft. Maybe in like the 6th or something. Im thinking Owen Maceric FB. RB Taiwan Jones. Maybe a TE like stocker i know BFE would be excited lol

  29. atwaters da man says:

stocker, maceric and jones would be great! What about Cameron Jordan (TE) USC bb player

  30. bones1965 says:

Again i would pick fom strength of the draft and safety and Te are not strengths of this draft. Rahim Moore is not a ball hawk I watched him evry game last year. two years ago he had 10 ints and that was the benefit of over thows.

Listen teams build inside out. The trenches are where games are won. I love Von Miller and the pick but go get a DT. Peaa DT OSU, Jenkins Clemson, Jurell USC, Ellis Hampton. What is wrong with this picture.

  31. bones1965 says:

this team was last in stopping the rush.

  32. Ikiratuki says:

I say Davon House CB out of New Mexico State would be a great pick.

  33. Mikeyb1203 says:

I still want Chris Proinski out of Whyoming so he can take over for Dawkings When he finally calls it quits. Did Jarrett get picked? If not I still would like him too.

  34. socalbigbroncofan says:

just saw fox’s interview about 2nd and 3rd round picks. sounds like he has a plan to bring somebody in when there is a free agency. overall i think so far so good. Foxy has something up his sleeve. i wouldnt worry too much about stopping the run. we will be better this season guaranteed.

  35. broncos20 says:

Bones I think Kendrick Ellis got picked up today by the Jets.

Mikeyb, the Eagles got Jarrett. They got themselves pretty set. They got Nate Allen last year and now Jarrett.

Stocker is still on the boards? even Dj Williams and that other #2 rated TE.

  36. BeastFromEast92 says:

strand we got our Safety Rahim Moore, the best damn Safety in the draft, now we need DT Badly, bro!!!!!!!!!

  37. BeastFromEast92 says:

    Let’s go Stocker TE TENNESSEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  38. Mikeyb1203 says:

I watched the video in Irving and I kinda like him. He just needs to beef up a little and learn how to get off blocks better but he could be a monster, he has food instincts good pick haven’t looked up the tackle yet.

  39. Mikeyb1203 says:

    Good*

  40. Mikeyb1203 says:

Ok just watched some videos on Fanklin, way better run blocker than pass blocker. If we do play Tebow next year I hope we move Clady to his blind side I would definitely feel alot more comfortable. I saw alot of missed assignments in pass blocking. But his run blocking was really good maybe why we grabbed him.

  41. Mikeyb1203 says:

Ok lol my last professional analysts lol is Moore, he seems to lack the ability to put a lick on anyone and instead of hitting the ballcarrier he catches them like a train in the chest. Poor form tackling, I could not find any videos of him covering but I hope it’s 15 times better than his tackling. Not satisfied with him hope we get Prolinski.

  42. baylinorcrush says:

I said I would post the contest results today.

    I lied.

In view of us having an extra two picks giving us 5 more to go I figure there is way too much on our plate to post the results now, so I’ll do it tomorrow morning, promise.

But in short, no one separated themselves from the masses in this year edition, because no one was able to get more than one pick right. 17 bloggers had one right, 27 had none right. But 5 guys put a littlle separation at the top with the tie breaker procedures and 4 guys managed to completely embarrass themselves for back to back drafts.

So stay tuned and check in tomorrow for the results, even so there won’t be a clear champion this year, it’s still worth looking into where everybody’s mind was at as far as gaging what the Triumvirate would do.

And if nothing else this proves once again how difficult it is to guess the draft with only one guy in the last two years able to guess more than one player correctly, UKBroncos with two players last year. Now you all understand better why I said earlier this week that if anyone guessed more than two players I would be in total awe of them.

  43. baylinorcrush says:

Time for a midway through the draft analysis of what the Triumvirate has accomplished. And don’t anyone take it personally, I call things as I see them, no pre conceived notions, no orange colored glasses, no b.s., just my feelings as naked as they can be telling like it is to me:

First and foremost let’s remember Elway and the Triumvirate have been spending the last few days making it very clear to all of us that they would draft for talent and not for needs.

With the #2 pick, mission accomplished.

Von Miller is arguably the best player in this draft, at least second best, and we can all be very excited to have him on board and hope that he will live up to the expectations. Grade: A- (still would of preferred Dareus, but this is definitely a more sexy pick).

Then at #36 we get THE TRADE.

Absolutely GENIUS, baiting SF up there with their need of a QB and willing to give us their #45, their fourth and fifth round picks!!! Picks we didn’t have in those two rounds! Our draft went from looking at not picking ANYBODY between round 3 and 6 to picking in each round, how about that for a master plan!!!

Then at #45, mission accomplished also.

Rahim Moore was arguably the top talent on the board at that time and with the grace of the Heavens Safety was a necessity for us, so the pick is made and immediately shores up that position. Grade: A.

    Then at #46…. They lied.

By picking Orlando Franklin, they in now way shape or form picked the best player on the board or anywhere close, they did not even pick the best talent at that position. This is the very definition of a “reach”, needing to fill a need so getting someone who should of been picked at the very best three dozens players later. Very, very disappointing as things stand now, specially since better talent like Ben Ijalana were still on the board at that time and that the Colts even traded UP to the #49, two picks after we picked Franklin, to select Ijalana. And the Colts are an excellent franchise with an excellent record may I point out, as to maybe they know what they are doing… Grade: C-

Then at #67… They lied again.

Except this time even a little more than for the last pick. Sure we needed to shore up the MLB position, just like we needed to shore up the right OT position to protect Tebow’s blind side going with Orlando Franklin. In fact I had Martez Wilson at this spot, and he was available, but they decided to go with Nate Irving who at best was projected to go at least TWO Rounds later. Once again, the very definition of a “reach”. Grade: F.

Of course all this is things as I see them now, and it very well could be that the Triumvirate turns out to be the geniuses who discovered two gems in Franklin and Irving, that no one else had dreamed or envisioned of, but the odds are not in their favors according to what we know now. So here is to hope they know what most others don’t, and in any case the first two picks were spot on with much higher odds of success and combine that with THE TRADE, which could give us some incredible gems in the fourth and the fifth, picks that we didn’t have before, like FB Marecic.

Overall grade so far: B- (on the strength of THE TRADE).

Scold me all you want about my negatives, but as you all well know, I won’t care, LOL.

  44. baylinorcrush says:

Did you notice how smooth that was, posting the first post saying “I lied” before posting the second one saying “they lied”. That’s pretty diplomatic of me, as diplomatic as I get anyhow, haha.

  45. baylinorcrush says:

Don’t have to read the DP today, I actually used nothing but my own brains, lol.

  46. steveatwater5 says:

I like most of the picks i was a little sad for the trade down cus I wanted Kyle Rudolph so bad .But when we got Moore I was ok with it he reminds me alot of Dennis smith (just my personal opinion)I hope we get some DT’s or at least another corner this draft is not as deep as the last one and we badly need linemen

PS:sorry for not being on for so long ive just been worried about work lately but I assure you the Broncos are top on my mind and I love watching the draft
