After a brief lightning delay, the Broncos were back on the practice field for their evening workout. The rain subsided quickly, allowing players to take the field about thirty minutes later than the scheduled start of practice.
Fans readied themselves for the weather with raincoats and Broncos-orange ponchos, and two observers stood out in day-glo yellow jumpsuits.
LenDale White’s addition to the club was announced less than an hour before practice, so the running back took the field a little bit later than the other players. He jogged out of the locker room sporting a No. 26 jersey and immediately joined his new teammates in stretching. Slapping hands with Tim Tebow was his first order of business.
White worked in with the rest of the backs on basic drills, like receiving handoffs and honing his blocking form on the sled. Toney Baker’s no longer the heaviest running back in Denver. White unloaded all 235 pounds into the sled, pushing it off the ground with ease. Spencer Larsen also started the drill with a wallop on the sled.
In a pass-blocking drill, White kept Devin Bishop at bay by shoving the linebacker away from the tackling dummy in the pocket.
That was the majority of the action in White’s first practice. He listened to advice from position coach Eric Studesville while the other backs participated in passing drills and scrimmages.
Demaryius Thomas gained steam as the practice wore on, making himself comfortable in the end zone. His first touchdown catch came on an arcing fade-pass delivered from Kyle Orton in a7-on-7 goal line drill.
Up to that point, the defense had dominated the drill, but the play signaled a change of momentum for the offense.
Tim Tebow followed Thomas’ score with a touchdown throw to Bruce Hall, and the quarterback finished the drill with a bullet-pass to a sliding Eric Decker for another touchdown.
PLAY OF THE DAY
Matthew Willis reigned in a deep bomb on the left sideline after Tebow scrambled to his left and launched the long pass.
