2010 Training Camp Day 4: P.M. Blog

August 4th, 2010 - 7:34pm by Gabe Hiatt

After a brief lightning delay, the Broncos were back on the practice field for their evening workout. The rain subsided quickly, allowing players to take the field about thirty minutes later than the scheduled start of practice.

Fans readied themselves for the weather with raincoats and Broncos-orange ponchos, and two observers stood out in  day-glo yellow jumpsuits.

WHITE WATCH

LenDale White’s addition to the club was announced less than an hour before practice, so the running back took the field a little bit later than the other players. He jogged out of the locker room sporting a No. 26 jersey and immediately joined his new teammates in stretching. Slapping hands  with Tim Tebow was his first order of business.

White worked in with the rest of the backs on basic drills, like receiving handoffs and honing his blocking form on the sled. Toney Baker’s no longer the heaviest running back in Denver. White unloaded all 235 pounds into the sled, pushing it off the ground with ease. Spencer Larsen also started the drill with a wallop on the sled.

In a pass-blocking drill, White kept Devin Bishop at bay by shoving the linebacker away from the tackling dummy in the pocket.

That was the majority of the action in White’s first practice. He listened to advice from position coach Eric Studesville while the other backs participated in passing drills and scrimmages.

7-ON-7 HIGHLIGHTS

Demaryius Thomas gained steam as the practice wore on, making himself comfortable in the end zone.  His first touchdown catch came on an arcing fade-pass delivered from Kyle Orton in a7-on-7 goal line drill.

Up to that point, the defense had dominated the drill, but the play signaled a change of momentum for the offense.

Tim Tebow followed Thomas’ score with a touchdown throw to Bruce Hall, and the quarterback finished the drill with a bullet-pass to a sliding Eric Decker for another touchdown.

PLAYMAKERS

  • Thomas had a sharp evening all-around, developing a good rapport with Orton . In 11-on-11 goal line drills he hooked up with Orton in the end zone, and in the full-field scrimmage he had his most spectacular play of the day. Champ Bailey shadowed Thomas in man-coverage down the right sideline. When the ball arrived from Orton, Thomas shot up in the air, elevated over Bailey for the reception and atracted a loud applause from the fan section.
  • Cassius Vaughn burst through the middle of the wedge in a kick-coverage drill, tagging Tony Carter before he could reach the twenty-yard line.
  • Orton showed solid timing throughout the practice, completing a high percentage of passes. He put Brandon Stokley in position to make a teetering over-the-shoulder reception in the end zone, and he fired a touchdown to Eddie Royal from the seven-yard line to win the two-minute drill.
  • Darcel McBath drew praise from the defensive coaches for reading a dive play up the middle and coming down to stop Lance Ball before he could gain too much ground.
  • PLAY OF THE DAY

Matthew Willis reigned in a deep bomb on the left sideline after Tebow scrambled to his left and launched the long pass.

    QUICK HITS

  • Assistant offensive line coach Bob Wylie worked on footwork with Ryan Harris on the field prior to practice.
  • Eric Olsen and Seth Olsen, each practiced snapping the ball to the different quarterbacks in the soggy conditions.
  • Champ Bailey was back on the practice field after taking the morning off, but Perrish Cox still did some work with the first team defense during some of the team drills.
  • In the final portion of 11-on-11 drills, the offense executed a variety of screen passes with Hall and Eddie Royal putting forth big gains.
  • Tim Tebow finished first in all but one of the 50-yard-and-back sprints in the team running period at the end of practice. On the last repetition, strength and conditioning coach Rich Tuten called him out for only going 45 yards and forced Tebow to go back to the 50 after he already started heading back to the starting line.  The back track  allowed some of his teammates to claim victory, including Kyle Orton, who celebrated by raising his hands in the air.
  • Britton Colquitt practiced coffin-corner punts while the offense and defense scrimmaged each other on the adjacent field.

ya florio. how many years of this are we going to take before the front office wakes up and cans this clown. all these injuries and we havent even hit the preseason yet! sheesh….

    2. broncofanlvnm says:

I agree we need a new strength and conditioning coach given all the “pull” type injuries of recent years and not being able to finish out the last half of seasons as strong as the first half. I see this injury to Doom as partly management’s fault as well, however. If they would have signed doom to his extension early on, he could have been in Denver working in the off season conditioning program instead of “doing in on his own”. I mean I think he has a really good work ethic, but really how do we know what he was doing to stay in shape on his own? I hope Bowlen and others learn from this and do the right thing with our great players sooner rather than later from now on! :(

      FYI

There is a new blog up for those who can’t see the link to the new blog. (like me) lol

DOOM OUT FOR THE SEASON. Torn peck and has to have sergury with 4 month recovery time. This is worst news possible and we just lost our best player for the season

    6. BeastFromEast92 says:

Thanks for the info Baylin,I hate to see Doom hurt, that really sucks!!!!

Lendale White is a really good RB,and should provide us with an excellent powerback, needs to learn from his mistakes tho.Anyway with playing time I look for him to beat out Buck pretty easily, maybe even Moreno???

    7. BeastFromEast92 says:

Lonnie Paxton is a tattooed freak,LOL,don’t have a prob with it tho, considering I have several myself.

    8. baylinorcrush says:

The worse possible scenario has happened for Doom:

The ink on his $61.5 million contract still gummy, Elvis Dumervil, the defending NFL sack king, suffered a torn pectoral mucle during a late training camp practice Wednesday night.

Dumervil is expected to undergo surgery to repair the tear and is not expected back until November _ and that’s with an aggressive rehab.

    9. broncofanlvnm says:

Even worse, the Broncos will have to decide whether to place him on IR or not soon. I would guess not until after his surgery, if this is needed and most likely will be.

    10. baylinorcrush says:

With such injury I posted earlier the recovery time can be 4 to 6 months, in all honesty I believe he should go on IR, at least opening up a spot for us, this is terrible.

    11. IWILLX2 says:

I believe J.Moss can and will fill in wonderfully for Dumerville. He is having the best camp of his pro career. He has always had speed and knows how to get to the Qb. He struggled with the speed of the N.F.L. but this year, he is working harder to catch up with everything. He is asking questions so he will be in the correct spot on plays and he is doing all the little things to show that he is ready to step up and contribute. I am terribly sorry that Doom got hurt but believe me when I say that Moss is going to step up, Make many plays and finally deserve being picked #17 in the draft 2 years ago. He will earn his keep this year and will probably have the most sacks out of our Lb group this year. It will be D.J Williams-Mays,Haggen,or Ayodele in the middle. Ayers on one side and Moss on the other. We have a wonderful group of back up Lb’s ready to come in and contribute so we WILL BE FINE at the LB position. With all the beef we acquired along with the guy’s we already had on the D-Line, we are going to be very strong there. Our line is going to tie up the O-Line so our Lb’s can attack and make plays in the back field. We are going to start looking like the Ravens, Steelers, and Chargers of old. Our D-fense will win games for us this year and I believe will be the strength of our TEAM. Go BRONCOS. IWILLX2

    12. baylinorcrush says:

Can I get a drink of what you’re having?

    13. broncofanlvnm says:

Nothing wrong with being optimistic! LOL! What else to we have at this point?

    14. IWILLX2 says:

The acquisition of Lendale White will prove to be good for us BRONCOS. He runs hard gets the tough short yards. Knows how to lean and fall forward. He is the big tough back we needed for a long time. He’s young and has alot of football left in him. He has a point to prove especially after being released from the Seahawks and he know that he doesn’t have many more chances from other teams with him being suspended for 4 games this season. The next suspension will be even longer and teams wont be willing to take that knid of chance on him so he is going to make the most out of being here with us BRONCOS. It’s his home team so his family will be able to attend most of if not all of his home games and he is working toward obtaining a long term deal from us BRONCOS or another team once this 2 year contract is up. Go Lendale….Go Brooncsos…..IWILLX2

    15. baylinorcrush says:

I still need a drink of what he is having.

    16. IWILLX2 says:

You can have some of what I am drinking….. It is called ORANGE CRUSH…….LOL……….Go BRONCOS…..BRONCOS FOR LIFE ! IWILLX2

    17. baylinorcrush says:

Problem is I can’t get it in any stores I know of, can you mail me a six pack?

    18. IWILLX2 says:

I am being optimistic but what I am saying is very likely. Moss was the man at Florida. He help the Gators win the Championship they won. He had a couple of bad years when he came here to us Broncos because he didn’t put in the neccessary work required to be successful in the N.F.L. He realized that, re-evaluated himself and started to do what he needed to so he could get back to the dominate form of himself like he was when he was at Florida. I read articles stating he is working very hard to get back to form and that the coaches are giving him praise for his hard off season work. He was even given a parking space reserved for players that worked hard to better themselves to be prepared for this season. You will see what I am talking about when the pre-season games start. Mark my words…..Moss is the real deal and will prove it this year. IWILLX2

    19. IWILLX2 says:

Sure give me your address and you got it. You can also get it from watching a couple of our games this year.lol IWILLX2

    20. Yovi21 says:

so…am I the only person who thinks that this is starting to get ridiculous? This is on the coaching staff and if not, if we have this much bad luck during the season it could be a very long year! (I apologize I’m a pessimist!) but I’m always a Broncos fan!
down but not out! GO BRONCOS 2010!

    21. baylinorcrush says:

Pretty much anyone who follows Bronco news knows that Moss is making great srides in his approach to the game and his off season this year, and that he will be a much better player would only be natural, it’s not rocket science, but that he can replace Doom’s 17 sacks last year is something I won’t even touch with a ten foot pole, we have just lost a lot today, no way around that, no amount of orange crush can make me see it any different. I do agree with you all heartidly about LenDale’s potential here, I posted a whole bunch about all that earlier.

    22. rayjr26 says:

ya man not only have you been drinkin barrels full of kool aid, but your glasses must also have extremely orange tinted lenses! its ok tho. im just jealous is all. untill tuten stops stinkin up the joint (good pun right!) we are going to continue to see dumb injuries. hopefully im wrong but i think his track record speaks for its self. course im just a 30 something. what the heck do i know?
      Go Broncos
“THE BATTLE IS WON IN THE TRENCHES”

    23. baylinorcrush says:

Smart man you are Ray, you’re right, I’m with you, wish I could see my Bronco life with more pink in it, hmm, orange I mean, not that I’m thinking glass half empty or anything like that, I just see that right now everything is but a bed of roses with our team, it’s just that simple. But of course we will fight to the death.

    24. baylinorcrush says:

And by the way, to be gloomy today about the loss of Doom is absolutely normal, losing Doom is kind of like losing a family member, we are allowed to grieve for a while, it’s not being pessimistic it’s being compassionate. I’m not going to sit here and put Doom immediately out of my mind, he was the league sack leader last year and he was at the forefront of every thing news this off season. I still can’t believe it, I will be in shock for a while.

    25. broncofanlvnm says:

We are where we are now. Doom out for probably the entire season. At least Moss has most of TC to hone his skills, and hopefully make a more than adequate replacement for Doom. Also under new DC Martindale. This will be very interesting to see how it all plays out. Most of us were only recently talking about now being worried about the defense and now this happens. I will just say that I am VERY cautiously optimistic.

    26. broncofanlvnm says:

      Not being worried….

    27. mikew007 says:

No silver lining to this….but to blame the management staff or the coach is just petty.

He got hurt. He is out for the season. It’s football. It happens. It stinks.

    28. baylinorcrush says:

I agree, but it’s McD’s job to evaluate everyone’s performance and Tuten is no exception, the fact that we had all those running backs going down with pulled this and pulled that in 2008 coupled with the fact that the team could not end up the season strong last year nor could they finish many games strong either, that alone in my book would be enough to want to evaluate Tuten’s practices, that’s all I’m asking.

    29. rayjr26 says:

im with you bay….. a sprained ankle, a swollen knee, a dislocated elbow… these are things that just happen. pulled muscles, torn muscles, low stamina these are things that IMO are the result of improper training/stretching/conditioning. i by no means am attempting to pass myself as an expert on conditioning but these things have been happening within our organization for far too long… about a decade or so i think.. how long has tuten been here again? ….. just my 2 cents tho!
i still sincerely hope that the rest of the guys will step up an fill in admirably but anytime you lose a stud, not to mention the NFL sack leader, its hard. hopefully as mentioned previously by broncofan moss has all of TC to get a handle on his duties.

    30. NavajoNation#1Fan says:

      GO BRONCOS

    31. Atwater4HOF says:

Nobody was complaining about Tuten last year when we had hardly any injuries… injuries happen. You don’t have to point the finger at someone everytime something goes wrong. Sometimes luck just isn’t on your side. Last year injury wise we were very lucky. So far this year, not so much.

With finishing strong last year, that had alot to do with the age and lack of depth on our team. Moreno hit the rookie wall and that killed our offense. Defensively, our starters on the D line were role players in the past and just were not used to being used as starters for an entire season.

    32. Atwater4HOF says:

These guys are professional athletes, they know how to properly stretch and prepare for training camp. I have a hard time buying that argument but I could be wrong. I lean towards the argument that we are just off to an unlucky start and im hoping that is the last we hear of significant injuries the rest of camp.

    33. Atwater4HOF says:

      No disrespect intended, just disagreeing

    34. baylinorcrush says:

That’s what the blog is for….

    35. baylinorcrush says:

Not specifically disagreeing I just meant discussing, which often leads to disagreements, no big deal to me, it happens all the time, if you are on as much as me specially.

    36. Atwater4HOF says:

Indeed. People sometimes get offended though so I try to clear that up

    37. broncofanlvnm says:

Yes professional athletes should know how to stretch and prepare for TC properly, but strength and conditioning coaches are paid to make sure they do it properly and if not instruct them how to do it properly. It just seems like too many of these types of injuries have been happening over the past several years, all of which have been under Tuten’s tenure.

    38. royalbroncofan1 says:

Here’s clip of the NFL Draft 2007 when Jarvis Moss was drafted.
Expectations were high at the time, when we took him with the 17th overall pick in the 1st rd. Looks like Moss was little lighter back then.

      http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4Cnc5eg_BCE

    39. broncofanlvnm says:

Damn! We only moved up 4 spots and gave up a 3rd and 6th round picks to get Moss? I didn’t know that. He sure looks good in those clips though. Hope he can do that for us now!

    40. Atwater4HOF says:

I’d normally agree, but first of all every team has injuries. If it was Tuten’s fault we would have a consistent problem with injuries. With last year having virtually 1 major injury (Harris) it implies that Tuten did a great job and isn’t the problem. Just unfortunate luck, but who knows. McDaniels seems very meticulous in evaluating the staff and players extensively and I think he would have pulled the plug on Tuten if he was a poor strength and conditioning coach

    41. royalbroncofan1 says:

I know when I played, we always made sure to stretch and then warm up by doing different types of drills. I’ve never known a coach who has not paid attention to the importance of stretching and conditioning, before taking the field.
Our Team did everything from initial stretches with legs, arms, back, neck, chest, etc.. then on to bear crawls, monkey barrel roles…gasers, then a water break. After that we’d start out with hamburger drills, and that was junior/high school.

I think if Tuten was doing such a poor job, this would have been addressed in his assessments with his HC/GM, and he’d be long gone.
      just my take…

    42. Atwater4HOF says:

Agreed, it’s just a tough stretch for us right now and it’s hard to accept it as just bad luck instead of placing the blame on Tuten/coaching staff

    43. Atwater4HOF says:

Barrett (my favorite player) and McKinley on IR…. this is getting out of hand

    44. baylinorcrush says:

Well I guess we’ll throw these two under bad luck also…

    45. Atwater4HOF says:

I get the sarcasim but yea, it really is. Barrett is a workout warrior so to say he wasn’t in proper shape/strength would be assinine. When the pads come on injuries happen. What a shame…

    46. royalbroncofan1 says:

This is from the bleacher report:

“The burden of replacing the team’s leading sack artist now falls to a pair of former first round picks”.

“Jarvis Moss (2007, 17th overall) and Robert Ayers (2009, 18th overall) must now fill in the production left by Dumervil. That is a tall order for a duo that has combined for 35 tackles and 3.5 sacks since joining the NFL. That is meager production for a pair of highly selected outside linebackers”.

    47. broncofanlvnm says:

      ???

    48. royalbroncofan1 says:

What the bleacher report fails to recognize is that Moss and Ayers were DE’s in college and converted to OLB under Coach McD’s new system. Same thing for Dumervil.
Who’s to say one of these guys doesn’t have a breakout year. Until last year, yes Elvis had some sacks as a DE, but after being converted, he kicked butt. I’ll remain an optimist and hope either Ayers or Moss breaks through.
The challenge will be there for both of them, and if not then someone else.

    49. florio's_mom says:

We ran out of steam last year. I’d blame that on conditioning. ie Tuten.

We have been poorly conditioned and/or injury prone for the past couple years.

I’m getting really tired of it.

    50. MileHighMonty says:

Just got home from work and saw the Dumerville news. I feel like a part of me just died.
