2010 Training Camp Day 4: P.M. Blog

August 4th, 2010 - 7:34pm by Gabe Hiatt

After a brief lightning delay, the Broncos were back on the practice field for their evening workout. The rain subsided quickly, allowing players to take the field about thirty minutes later than the scheduled start of practice.

Fans readied themselves for the weather with raincoats and Broncos-orange ponchos, and two observers stood out in  day-glo yellow jumpsuits.

WHITE WATCH

LenDale White’s addition to the club was announced less than an hour before practice, so the running back took the field a little bit later than the other players. He jogged out of the locker room sporting a No. 26 jersey and immediately joined his new teammates in stretching. Slapping hands  with Tim Tebow was his first order of business.

White worked in with the rest of the backs on basic drills, like receiving handoffs and honing his blocking form on the sled. Toney Baker’s no longer the heaviest running back in Denver. White unloaded all 235 pounds into the sled, pushing it off the ground with ease. Spencer Larsen also started the drill with a wallop on the sled.

In a pass-blocking drill, White kept Devin Bishop at bay by shoving the linebacker away from the tackling dummy in the pocket.

That was the majority of the action in White’s first practice. He listened to advice from position coach Eric Studesville while the other backs participated in passing drills and scrimmages.

7-ON-7 HIGHLIGHTS

Demaryius Thomas gained steam as the practice wore on, making himself comfortable in the end zone.  His first touchdown catch came on an arcing fade-pass delivered from Kyle Orton in a7-on-7 goal line drill.

Up to that point, the defense had dominated the drill, but the play signaled a change of momentum for the offense.

Tim Tebow followed Thomas’ score with a touchdown throw to Bruce Hall, and the quarterback finished the drill with a bullet-pass to a sliding Eric Decker for another touchdown.

PLAYMAKERS

  • Thomas had a sharp evening all-around, developing a good rapport with Orton . In 11-on-11 goal line drills he hooked up with Orton in the end zone, and in the full-field scrimmage he had his most spectacular play of the day. Champ Bailey shadowed Thomas in man-coverage down the right sideline. When the ball arrived from Orton, Thomas shot up in the air, elevated over Bailey for the reception and atracted a loud applause from the fan section.
  • Cassius Vaughn burst through the middle of the wedge in a kick-coverage drill, tagging Tony Carter before he could reach the twenty-yard line.
  • Orton showed solid timing throughout the practice, completing a high percentage of passes. He put Brandon Stokley in position to make a teetering over-the-shoulder reception in the end zone, and he fired a touchdown to Eddie Royal from the seven-yard line to win the two-minute drill.
  • Darcel McBath drew praise from the defensive coaches for reading a dive play up the middle and coming down to stop Lance Ball before he could gain too much ground.
  • PLAY OF THE DAY

Matthew Willis reigned in a deep bomb on the left sideline after Tebow scrambled to his left and launched the long pass.

    QUICK HITS

  • Assistant offensive line coach Bob Wylie worked on footwork with Ryan Harris on the field prior to practice.
  • Eric Olsen and Seth Olsen, each practiced snapping the ball to the different quarterbacks in the soggy conditions.
  • Champ Bailey was back on the practice field after taking the morning off, but Perrish Cox still did some work with the first team defense during some of the team drills.
  • In the final portion of 11-on-11 drills, the offense executed a variety of screen passes with Hall and Eddie Royal putting forth big gains.
  • Tim Tebow finished first in all but one of the 50-yard-and-back sprints in the team running period at the end of practice. On the last repetition, strength and conditioning coach Rich Tuten called him out for only going 45 yards and forced Tebow to go back to the 50 after he already started heading back to the starting line.  The back track  allowed some of his teammates to claim victory, including Kyle Orton, who celebrated by raising his hands in the air.
  • Britton Colquitt practiced coffin-corner punts while the offense and defense scrimmaged each other on the adjacent field.

      It’s on the last blog

    11. Cdudbronc24 says:

      Probably isn’t to serious

    12. baylinorcrush says:

Hey KFS, FYI I posted how I feel about the Len Dale signing on the previous post.

    13. KnowshonForSure says:

Cool Baylin, I agree with what u said. I did a double take after I said that. joke, lol. We on the same page that he can help.

    14. Cdudbronc24 says:

I would rather have Westbrook. If Moreno is out anytime with his injury it will be the the begining of the season…which is when LenDale is suspended.

    15. florio's_mom says:

You make a good point cdud. Our running game might suffer in the beginning of the year but don’t worry, we have a pro bowl Quarter back and wide rec…..oh wait a minute never mind.

Lol jk. I would much rather have tebow than cutler. Hahaha

    16. Cdudbronc24 says:

I wouldn’t say that yet. Tebow has yet to take a snap in the NFL

    17. iowa-bronco says:

based on these training camp blogs and other info on different websites i would make orton starting qb with demayius thomas mattew willis and jabar gaffney or eric decker my starting players

    18. Cdudbronc24 says:

      No Eddie Royal?

    19. 1nOnlyTRB says:

      florio

no need to jk that. aint it just amazing that when our defense is playing at a high level and is likely to have another good season, we have lost offensive weapons and now our offense aint up to par? I swear…. we just cant have it all lol

anyway, doom hurt. Hope it feels better. I feel like players get hurt more in training camp than in actual games. We aint the only ones with players going down in TC, for example, in Philly both Jackson and Maclin have suffered injuries already this trianing camp…. If I were an older guy, this would be a even bigger reason I would hate TC lol. But then agian, I guess it all goes back to the strength and conditioning coach…we need a new one lol

    20. 1nOnlyTRB says:

ps: just saw the highlights of day 4, saw alot of good plays. mostly form the D. Cox stepping up of course, and even Phonzy got an INT as well I believe. But out of the RBs, saw alot of 29 bruce hall and man was he running hard. May the best men make the cut

    21. florio's_mom says:

Cdud. I was speaking attitude wise.

    22. manny 01 says:

THINGS ARE NOT GOING SO GOOD IN DENVER. WHO IS GOING DOWN NEXT, WHAT A WAY TO START OF THE SEASON. I BELIEVE WE HAVE A GOOD TEAM, BUT THESE INJURIES ARE HURTING OUR CHANCES TO HAVE GOOD SEASON!!!

60 MINUTES OF FOOTBALL GO BRONCOS!!!!

    23. BroncoBoyEst199 says:

      go bay bay

    24. eternalorangeandblue says:

seriously why cant we stay healthy for a change?

    25. florio's_mom says:

There is a difference between willis doing well and camp and starting

      1. Gaff/ DMT
      2. Royal/Willis
      3. Deck/Stoke

Gaffney looks to be ortons new favorite. Lets see how he develops into that primary role. Bay bay will get plenty of playing time but I don’t think he starts. Unless he has some Randy moss type of rookie season. He is a project.

After his rookie slump I expect royal to push it and please the coaches year. Royal and orton just need to develop some chemistry. Willis is having a great camp and will fill in nicely behind royal.

Although decker is just a rookie, he is complete enough to be a starter. The aging stokley will a have to get used to playing behind deck.

    26. florio's_mom says:

      Trb

I’ve been saying we need to fire tuten for years! I thought shanny was gunna kick him to the curb after 2008, but it was shanny that got kicked to the curb instead. Them when mcd shows up I figure he cleans house and fires him, nope he was one of the 3 or 4 that got retained. It’s annoying how we can never stay healthy!

    27. BroncoAussie says:

Just for those interested, those picks in the highlights by number 33, that is Nate Jones, 22 is Phonzy.

    28. UKnowWhoThisIs says:

Seriously, did this surprise anyone… Someone get rid of Tuten! My high school coach did better with strength and conditioning and we are paying this man to do that and yet every year we end up with 4 or 5 people getting hurt in the first week of training camp and by mid-season our players are all worn out… You think someone would figure out it’s poor strength and conditioning and you should prolly fire the guy in charge of it

    29. baylinorcrush says:

I hear everybody about the Tuten thing, what is most frustrating about our injuries in the past is that so many were pulled this, pulled that, I mean if a guy stretches out well enough and is in good condition pulls should be few and far between, which leads me to think that there is indeed a situation with the conditioning in Denver and it might be a good idea to part ways with Tuten, at least next year. McD knows conditioning has been a problem due to the crappy finish of last season, and he has said that they were going to do things differently this year to remedy that, but it doesn’t take into account the rash of injuries due to poor conditioning (at least in the past) so I think he needs to take it a step further and evaluate Tuten.

    30. baylinorcrush says:

About the signing of LenDale White if all the reports are correct, the Broncos first made a contract offer to Ladell Betts, but he turned it down and is on his way to see the Saints, subsequently they signed White, not to a one year contract but a TWO year contract, and that is very significant. If as some think we are getting White in TC only because we are short on RB’s to practice with and that he is not going to play a big role if Bucky and Moreno stay healthy, I would tend to disagree. The fact that the guy will miss the first four games of the season for substance abuse, which as doc pointed out is the time when Moreno could most likely have difficulty with his hammy, points to him not just being here as a spare, but rather as a major wheel in the rotation.

Heck, everyone and their sisters should know that we could of used a power back last year, it wasn’t all the fault of Moreno or the O line, it was a giant common effort on the O including the play calling failing at converting short yardage plays for first downs and it turned out to be the dooming part of the O for our season, so heck yeah once again, of course it would be nice to have a powerback who is build like a tank, weighs like a tank and can lean his shoulder forward and run over a tackler just like a tank to give us a better shot at first down on short yardage. And now we got one, but boy did McD take a huge gamble on this guy character wise, he was hurting real bad to make that move that’s for sure and he clearly stayed away from Westbrook because of the concussions I believe, I would of, concussions are now like a bad word in the NFL, it’s kind of like the plague, you want to stay away from it as far as you can.

So, here is to hope everything works out fine with LenDale, it’s not what I wanted, those I wanted disappeared one by one in the draft while McD ignored the need, but hey, I’ll take a power back however I can get one! welcome home LenDale and do us proud, do your state proud and most importantly do your team proud, I will stand by you giving you all the benefit of the doubt, but obviously, like Marshall, your leash is going to be very short, with the league, with McD and with me, haha.

And McD, thanks for waking up about all this RB stuff, I know it was just used as a diversion in N-E, but you had Brady, now you are seemingly counting on Orton and he needs a lot more help than Brady does, the running game is a good place to start. Better late than never may become the mantra for this version of our beloved Broncos, at least as far as I’m concerned, hopefully it won’t be tooo late for Bailey, he deserves to go all the way as much as anyone.

    31. rayjr26 says:

ya, i think the front office needs to seriously begin looking into a new strength and conditioning coach. ive been thinkin that for several years now. just seems like we have more injuries than most teams. but glad to see we got that power back everyone was askin for and serious kudos to you folks that nailed it with wanting lendale. the blog said tebow was the first guy he went to shake hands with. maybe he is wanting to turn over a new leaf. take a page out of the tebow life strategy compendium! :) wish him well and hope he has a great season!

    32. baylinorcrush says:

Doom injured his pectoral muscle in his right arm going up against Polumbus in a drill, no further reports that I know of so far.

    33. KnowshonForSure says:

Yeah Baylin, just read the same thing on PFT. They say they believe it might be a torn pectoral, do you know how long that injury usually takes to heal.

    34. baylinorcrush says:

Talking about congratulating folks who asked for LenDale, what about nsdvl, this is what he posted on January 22nd!!!!:

The running game, we need a power back, to compliment KM. Hillis is my first choice, but McD refused to use him, so I don’t see him being used next year, no matter what crap he tried to feed us in the video conference. So there is one in FA that kinda piques my interest and that is Lendale White!6-1 and 235. 25 y/o and a Denver native. Though, I see him going to Seattle to be the feature back.

He was right on both counts, White did go to Seattle and ended up piquing McD’s interest, pretty cool sndvl, where have you been anyway?

And whenever we used to talk about White being available during free agency, BFE would always say that Whit was his man.

Since the choices were very limited in free agency I always thought we would be best served to go for a power back in the draft, what do I know? LOL.

    35. baylinorcrush says:

KFS, considering how little we know about the injury I wouldn’t want to venture a guess here, there are so many degrees of tears in a pectoral muscle as I’m finding out, that is if he has a tear, but a fully torn pectoral is like a fully torn hammy, it can take 4 to 6 months recovery but as we found out with Moreno there was no tear, so let’s hope for the same 3 weeks scenario or even less.

    36. KnowshonForSure says:

Lets hope so Baylin, we really need Doom healthy.

    37. rayjr26 says:

ya if doom is out for 4 mos then we are hosed!! :) i will def be prayin for a speedy recovery!

    38. baylinorcrush says:

Since I went back to check out who was pulling for LenDale at the beginning of the year, I came across a post of mine from January 21st that addressed our needs for both the free agency and draft:

This is my complete list of our needs in order of priority:

A LARGE NT to occupy the middle.
Two BIG DL to stop the run.
      A sizable Center and
two BIG Guards to operate the power blocking scheme successfully.
      Two STOUT power RB’s.
One DE/OLB to compliment the pass rush opposite of DOOM.
One ILB to stop the run.
One receiving TE with sure hands.
      One TALL WR’s.
One full size CB (not a half pint like Phonzy).

Let’s see how my wishes were answered:

      NT, got it, Jamal Williams
Two big DL, got them, Bannan and Jarvis Green
      Center, got it, Walton
Two big guards, got them, Beadles and Eric Olsen
Two power backs, finally got half of that with LenDale
one OLB/DE, didn’t quite get that, let’s hope Ayers will do
An ILB, didn’t quite get that either, let’s hope Haggan will do
Receiving TE, didn’t get that, let’s hope Branson will do
      Tall WR, got that, Thomas
Full size CB, got that, Cox.

Well all in all I gotta be pretty happy with what I got, 9 out of my 13 players requests, and of course no way I was gonna get it all since McD went for two QB’s, another WR and some others.

    39. rayjr26 says:

man bay you should feel like christmas came early for ya! or like a proud new father or something! :) seems to me you got pretty spoiled there. lol and i WAS right. you do know everything. tell me obi wan, will i someday be as strong in the force as you? roflmfao

I hope Lendale White shows up to play hard in Denver much the same as Chauncey Billups did with the Nuggets. That would be kool.

    41. SiriusBroncosFan says:

The NFL Network just reported that Dumervil tore his right pectoral muscle. The team expects him to play thisseason, but this is a huge setback for the D-line in my opinion.

    42. thatdude807 says:

DUMERVIL IS OUT 4 MONTHS PROBABLY THE WHOLE SEASON….. This sucks man, MOSS GOTTA STEP UP BIG TIME NOW… I felt like we should of drafted another OLB anyway

    43. broncofanlvnm says:

      :)

    44. iowa-bronco says:

i cant believe that doom is out for almost whole season. good thing we gotta good secondary.

    45. florio's_mom says:

      Doom on IR? Booo!

This is a huge blow, I mean major.

      Fire Tuten!

    46. royalbroncofan1 says:

So we have Haggan & DJ in the middle of 3-4 defense. Robert Ayers at one outside position. #97 Jarvis Moss will now man the other outside position. All indications say Moss is having a great camp. I hope he’s ready.

      We still have:
      Nick Griesen
      Baraka Atkins
      Akin Ayodele (sp)
      Wesley Woodyard
      Kevin Alexander
      Darrell Reid (not active?)
      Jimmie Kirlew (R)

I may have missed someone else…

With Dumervils forecast return, that would have him back in early December. Let’s hope for a speedy recovery.

    47. Big D 44 says:

Man, Doom out for 4 months? Sucks… It’s starting to feel like there is some kind of curse in Dove Valley. I have a lot of hopes and optimism about this team but we absolutely cannot afford all of these injuries before the season.

    48. florio's_mom says:

Isn’t this same injury Jamal Williams had? He was out for the years.

Put your hands in the Ayers. That’s our only hope for a decent pass rush.

    49. florio's_mom says:

      Lol just one year.

    50. florio's_mom says:

      Big D

Yeah, that curse is called rich tuten.

      Fire tuten!
