2010 Training Camp Day 4: P.M. Blog

August 4th, 2010 - 7:34pm by Gabe Hiatt

After a brief lightning delay, the Broncos were back on the practice field for their evening workout. The rain subsided quickly, allowing players to take the field about thirty minutes later than the scheduled start of practice.

Fans readied themselves for the weather with raincoats and Broncos-orange ponchos, and two observers stood out in  day-glo yellow jumpsuits.

WHITE WATCH

LenDale White’s addition to the club was announced less than an hour before practice, so the running back took the field a little bit later than the other players. He jogged out of the locker room sporting a No. 26 jersey and immediately joined his new teammates in stretching. Slapping hands  with Tim Tebow was his first order of business.

White worked in with the rest of the backs on basic drills, like receiving handoffs and honing his blocking form on the sled. Toney Baker’s no longer the heaviest running back in Denver. White unloaded all 235 pounds into the sled, pushing it off the ground with ease. Spencer Larsen also started the drill with a wallop on the sled.

In a pass-blocking drill, White kept Devin Bishop at bay by shoving the linebacker away from the tackling dummy in the pocket.

That was the majority of the action in White’s first practice. He listened to advice from position coach Eric Studesville while the other backs participated in passing drills and scrimmages.

7-ON-7 HIGHLIGHTS

Demaryius Thomas gained steam as the practice wore on, making himself comfortable in the end zone.  His first touchdown catch came on an arcing fade-pass delivered from Kyle Orton in a7-on-7 goal line drill.

Up to that point, the defense had dominated the drill, but the play signaled a change of momentum for the offense.

Tim Tebow followed Thomas’ score with a touchdown throw to Bruce Hall, and the quarterback finished the drill with a bullet-pass to a sliding Eric Decker for another touchdown.

PLAYMAKERS

  • Thomas had a sharp evening all-around, developing a good rapport with Orton . In 11-on-11 goal line drills he hooked up with Orton in the end zone, and in the full-field scrimmage he had his most spectacular play of the day. Champ Bailey shadowed Thomas in man-coverage down the right sideline. When the ball arrived from Orton, Thomas shot up in the air, elevated over Bailey for the reception and atracted a loud applause from the fan section.
  • Cassius Vaughn burst through the middle of the wedge in a kick-coverage drill, tagging Tony Carter before he could reach the twenty-yard line.
  • Orton showed solid timing throughout the practice, completing a high percentage of passes. He put Brandon Stokley in position to make a teetering over-the-shoulder reception in the end zone, and he fired a touchdown to Eddie Royal from the seven-yard line to win the two-minute drill.
  • Darcel McBath drew praise from the defensive coaches for reading a dive play up the middle and coming down to stop Lance Ball before he could gain too much ground.
  • PLAY OF THE DAY

Matthew Willis reigned in a deep bomb on the left sideline after Tebow scrambled to his left and launched the long pass.

    QUICK HITS

  • Assistant offensive line coach Bob Wylie worked on footwork with Ryan Harris on the field prior to practice.
  • Eric Olsen and Seth Olsen, each practiced snapping the ball to the different quarterbacks in the soggy conditions.
  • Champ Bailey was back on the practice field after taking the morning off, but Perrish Cox still did some work with the first team defense during some of the team drills.
  • In the final portion of 11-on-11 drills, the offense executed a variety of screen passes with Hall and Eddie Royal putting forth big gains.
  • Tim Tebow finished first in all but one of the 50-yard-and-back sprints in the team running period at the end of practice. On the last repetition, strength and conditioning coach Rich Tuten called him out for only going 45 yards and forced Tebow to go back to the 50 after he already started heading back to the starting line.  The back track  allowed some of his teammates to claim victory, including Kyle Orton, who celebrated by raising his hands in the air.
  • Britton Colquitt practiced coffin-corner punts while the offense and defense scrimmaged each other on the adjacent field.

Tuten is not the problem. Injuries occur in the NFL every day. I feel horrible for Doom. I`m not gonna blame the conditoining coach. Thats a cop out. Inuries happen, so get over it. Do you really think we are going to the SuperBowl this year? I don`t think so. With Doom hurt it`s gonna make it a tougher season, thats all. If we make the playoffs, maybe Doom will be there. Lets hope. Injuries freaken happen. I`m not gonna point any fingers thats for sure. Heal up fast DOOM. A BRONCO`s FAN, win or lose
