After last night’s “opportunity” practice, the team was back on the field Wednesday morning in full pads. Several veterans, including Champ Bailey and Brian Dawkins, were given the morning off.
The team worked extensively in 11-on-11 drills, working through a variety of scenarios on a steamy morning at Dove Valley.
This morning’s session was a private practice, but the team will be back at it at 5:30 p.m. MDT and that session is open to the public. For dates and times to all practices, visit our training camp fan information page.
RUNNING BACK ROULETTE
With Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter still sidelined, the team’s other four running backs continue to get their chance to shine. During Wednesday morning’s 11-on-11 drills, Kolby Smith, Lance Ball, Bruce Hall and Toney Baker got opportunities to run with each quarterback in various situations.
Smith, who spent the opening special teams walk-through talking through his assignments on given plays with position coach Eric Studesville, started several drills as the top back. But Lance Ball took first reps during a hurry-up offense series and a red zone drill. Bruce Hall was the first running back in during the closing two-minute drill scenario.
FIRST TEAM OPPORTUNITIES
With Bailey, Dawkins and D.J. Williams sitting out the session, Perrish Cox, Darcel McBath and Wesley Woodyard got a chance to run with the first-team defense.
Cox took advantage with a pair of interceptions and several nice pass break-ups.
Throughout the morning, Nate Jones and Nick Greisen also got reps with the first-team defense.
11-ON-11 HIGHLIGHTS
During a hurry-up drill simulating the last 1:20 of the first half, Kyle Orton led a drive that stalled at the opponent’s 42-yard line. Matt Prater stepped up and made a 59-yard field goal, drawing applause from the Broncos’ VIP guests in attendance.
Orton hit Royal down the sideline for a long TD after the receiver beat Andre’ Goodman over the top. Quarterbacks coach Ben McDaniels punched the air in celebration, while Goodman took off on a lap after the lapse. The defense struck back on the next play when Cox grabbed an INT on an underthrown ball in front of Brandon Lloyd, earning the youngster a congratulatory headbutt from Elvis Dumervil.
The 11-on-11 portion ended with Orton and Brady Quinn leading two-minute drills from their own 20, in a scenario where they need a touchdown at the end of the fourth quarter to win. Orton started his drive by hitting Daniel Graham for a big chunk of yardage, but the march quickly ended with a Jones interception. Quinn’s drive seemed like it would stall early against the second-team defense, but on a 4th and 10, Demaryius Thomas drew pass interference on Syd’Quan Thompson trying to chase down a deep ball. That put the offense into the red zone, but the defense dug in thanks to pass break-ups by Alphonso Smith and Cassius Vaughn and avoided surrenderingĀ the score.
QUICK HITS
Jamal Williams, still on the team’s Active/PUP list, walked out of the facility early in practice and headed to the weight room for an individual workout. After practice, Head Coach Josh McDaniels said the defensive lineman might be back as early as tomorrow. “He’s getting closer,” McDaniels said. “Hopefully tomorrow might be D-Day for that. We’re excited about that and I think he is, too. I don’t want to put any guarantee on that, but it’s definitely getting closer.”
During drills, each defensive position group spent time doing a drill to simulate fumbles near the sideline. Players either scooped up the ball before going out of bounds or batted the ball to a teammate to save it from the sideline.
During an early period, Woodyard and Devin Bishop went through a drill separate from the other linebackers under the direction of defensive assistant Craig Aukerman. In the drill, operations staffers acted as the offensive line and the players had to react to their assignments.
The special teams drills today focused on kick coverage. Jones, Greisen, Smith, Vaughn, Woodyard, Jarvis Moss, Spencer Larsen, Matthew Willis, David Bruton and Akin Ayodele comprised the first-team coverage unit along with the kicker, Prater.
One of the plays of the day came during 7-on-7 drills when Goodman ripped a pass out of Jabar Gaffney’s hands and tapped his feet down in the corner of the endzone for an interception.
TRAINING CAMP JUKE BOX
Offseason champion Willis picked today’s warm-up songs.
The wide receiver’s mix led off with Young Jeezy’s “Put On.” “Regulate” by Warren G featuring Nate Dogg, “Can’t Tell Me Nothing” by Kanye West and Slick Rick’s “Children’s Story” closed the song list.
During several drives, the music returned to simulate crowd noise. The defense’s new favorite jam, Rick Ross’ “B.M.F,” kicked off the list, getting several defenders bouncing to the rhythm for the second straight day. Eminem’s “Not Afraid,” Michael Jackson’s “Dirty Diana” and Pearl Jam’s “Alive” also came booming out of the large speaker beside the practice field.

I just posted a couple interesting tidbits about this morning practice and our RB woes on the previous post.
great pics keep them coming
Decker must be doing good cause its been a pic of him since camp started but hey im not complaining….lol
Also did yall hear we had a couple of backs in practing for a spot…ladell betts, Adrian Peterson (the one from chicago not the one from minnesota..lol) and ray lewis little brother kenny lattimore and I might have that first name wrong but that’s some of the few…
My fault its keon lattimore…he played for the 49ers and the cowgirls…I remember him getting laid out by zach thomas on Hard Knocks with the cowgirls…
Am I the only one who looks at Gaffney and sees a little bit of Rod Smith? Just like Rod, Jabar is not very flashy or well known but he is a complete pro who runs good routes, blocks, and doesn’t drop passes. And I never hear about him making mistakes in practice.
I don’t know, he just seems way underrated if you ask me.
i really like what eric decker brings to the table
I heard we are looking at ledell Betts….man I hope so he eats us alive every year we go vs him…and check out this from wiki about his lone year as a starter.
In the 2006 season, Betts set career highs in several different areas as he filled in for the injured Clinton Portis, starting nine games as well as receiving significant carries spelling Portis. He totalled 1,154 rushing yard with a 4.7 yards per carry average and four rushing touchdowns. He also caught 53 passes for 445 yards and one touchdown as one of the leading receivers in a struggling offense.
Gald to see Cox making the best of his opportunities with the first team with two INT’s, this guy has the potential to rock the house!
Cox is definitely great news for us, bad news for Phonzy IMO.
mhm88….I agree with you about Gaffney in his good route running, blocking, and hanging onto the ball.He will be our #1 WR starting the season, but I think Royal will beat him out before seasons end and Bay Bay when he learns how to run better routes, will be a Helluva WR.Decker will make a great WR too with some experience under his belt. All in all I think we will be stacked at the WR position for years to come.
If we can get our Oline jelling, and a QB that can actually be feared for throwing deep,I believe our running game will be a lot better this year,we will be back on top in the AFC !!Just hope our O jells before our D fails.(old age)
BFE
man the DP opened up a can of $#^T with a story about broncos fans being divided about tebow based upon his religious views. talk about a hateful blog. thats the internet equivalent to hell there. wow. anyway, ya bay im glad to see cox doing well also. we defintately need some youth to step up on defense. maybe they can learn a thing or 2 from the older guys ahead of them. they better hurry tho cuz this group of vets isnt going to be around forever!
Go Broncos
“THE BATTLE IS WON IN THE TRENCHES”
KFS…Phonzy will have to wait his turn behind Champ and Goody as the x y CB,i don’t think he can make it at nickel Corner.IMO
rj26..I don’t care what his religous beliefs are, just as long as the kid contributes. As far as religion goes,I think a man is entitled to have his own beliefs, just as long as he dosen’t try to push them on anybody else.Just one man’s opinion that don’t mean a Helluva lot.
BFE
Yeah, agreed, I don’t discuss religion or politics with my buddies, not even with my blog buddies, so when I saw the title of that article I just went right to the next one without even reading it, absolutely worthless as far as football is concerned, it would be just a waste of my time.
With Champ,Goody, and Cox as our x y and Nickel Corners, and Dawk,Hill, and McBath at S,we will have the best secondary in the NFL again,no doubt.Just hope our new Dline pans out,if they do,I’m pretty sure our LB’s will step it up,we will be top 5 in total D !!GO BRONCS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This from cbs rapid reports
CB Perrish Cox intercepted 3 passes and had a pass defensed filling in for Champ Bailey (off day) with the first team at LCB. Cox, currently running as the top kickoff returner, is pushing reserves Nate Jones and Alphonso Smith hard for playing time.
Rayjr-
You are right, that was really dumb of them.
Are fans divided over Ryan Harris being a Muslim? No. Stupid Rumor Mongering.
h
Anybody know what the limit is for practicing as far as the heat index,I’m talking TSAA????
KFS…thanks for the info on Cox.
Tebow will have to be smart about things in the locker room because I hear he is a bit of a missionary about his faith, remember his parents are both missionaries I believe, football is just not the right platform for missionary work with everybody, it may work with some players but others won’t like it, that’s why I don’t discuss religion with my buddies, haha.
Baylin..I heard that bro!
no problem beast. I know the more information the better for us fans.
Moreno will have a breakout year, take it to the bank bros!
Broncos Info Center we are.
I’m running the front desk, haha.
TSSAA rules on the heat index is as follows,no team shall practice if the heat index is in excess of 104 degrees!
Bologna, teams don’t comply by that rule where I live !!
Yeah Broncos.com-Blog everything you need to know about the Broncos and some things you don’t wanna know.LMAO
itsn not sounding too god for a. smith…sounds like cox may a lock lock for the nickle
Same as yesterday, I have to post in order to read other post, so ignore this post lol.
It’s nice to see Cox thriving. He has the makings of Champ’s heir to the throne.
Not that I’m pushing all that hard for it, I hope Champ is with here to stay for the rest of his career. Maybe Cox will take over Goodman’s spot eventually or something.
Anyway I see him being a stud for a long time in this league, and to think we were able to get him in the 5th round!
Man after reading the blog and other comments I have no reason to venture out to the Denver Post or PFT everything is right here thanks guys ps I’m not being sarcastic, I’m 100% serious I get limited internet time so it’s good I don’t have to weed through stuff.
I love the updates, D sounds like it is doing great! I love the picks from the D but of course not the O. I think we are going to have some great WR’s but I do not like reading about the O stahling due to picks from our QB’s. That is not giving me a lot of confidence at the QB position, no matter who it is.
I hear you S.D.Bronco30, the INTs make me worry a little too. But then again that’s what camp is for so hopefully the QBs learn from the mistakes they make and are able to correct them by the time the season starts.
Alot of the int’s are coming during the two minute drill where communication is the key. Plenty of time to make corrections/adjustments.
???
The ints could be from a great secondary??
There’s no way our O can keep up with our D if our D comes together, you’re lookin’ at a top 5 Defense.IMO
That’s still way too many picks tho!
BFE
rfb1 is right,a lot of passing plays depend on communication and just right timing routes, and the WRs will learn.
As far as the Int’s a teams defense has played with the offense’s players and against their system enough to know where to make the grabs. That actually makes a QB better because he must learn and adjust to any and all defensive players adjustments. Every QB in the NFL throws picks gallore during training camp, even the greats.
They where showing ravens practice on NFL network, would be awesome if they showed our scrimmage on the 7th. I believe they are showing the eagles scrimmage tommorow.
i know they wont because of the HOF inductions, just saying it would be great to watch.
Cheers everyone!
On “sideline” news… Victoria’s Secret is launching a Denver Broncos line of underwear for women.
Now many of us could find something as interesting as the game itself after it. LOL.
Go Broncooos!
THAT IS TRUE BFE ,WE HAD A GREAT SECONDARY LAST SEASON. THAT CAN HELP OUT TO IMPROVE OUR SPREAD OFFENSE. THAT IS WHAT TC IS ALL ABOUT I RATHER HEAR THE DEFENSE IS GIVING OUR OFFENSE HELL, THAN BEING PUSHED AROUND. KEEP IT UP D BRING BACK THE ORANGE CRUSH!!!!
60 MINUTES OF FOOTBALL GO BRONCOS!!!
“Every Day a star is born, clap for him”
We all knew perrish cox would be good. Won honors on the collegiate level, well sized, 6’0 195, not pint sized, (Champ is 6’0 192) plus if u watched his video Highlights, you would see that he shows shutdown corner potential … And shutdown corners a different from play makign corners … play making corners may get plays made on them but they make plays back. Shutdown corners may not have as many interceptions but they deflect alot of passes and sometimes intercept. If you watch some youtube video on Perish you will see he deflects ALOT of passes.
In my Mind he is the heir apparent to champ bailey and I hope he studies up. And believe it or not. If he keeps ascending, he may beat out goodman for startign opposite of champ by next year. Our future DBs look promising.
Looking forward to seeing him return kicks and play defense. First year I have ever been more excited about the D and ST than the O. Its true when they say its rare for a team to have it all, cuz now that our D is playign at a high level, it looks like the offense is on the decline
I would argue that the offense is on the up and up. We got a solid set of WR’s a young and powerful offensive line some blocking TE’s who can catch good for that short range game a young running back who should emerge this season as a force to be recognized and a solid set at QB yup I’d say we are definately on the up and up.
Oh yes I said a solid set at QB. McDaniel (ya know the one they love to hate) is a QB’s coach through and through. Tebow will (get ready here’s a rare guarentee) will be a great QB in time. With his work ethic and dedication to the game there is no doubt in my mind. I was a doubter on this kid but when I watched a clip where he promised gator nation he would put in work I knew he had what it takes. Quinn has much of the same potential. Here he will serve as a backup who could start at any point. In Denver he gets his career together and moves on. Then theres my boy Orton. Orton is a good QB I saw last season, but think I was watching differentl than some. I see Orton as a solid QB. No one comes into a new system and tears it up, wait til this season and Orton will put his doubters to rest. If Orton plays the whole season as the starter, we make the playoffs.
SUNDAY SUNDAY SUNDAY ARE YOU READY FOR SOME FOOTBALL
TRB-
Good Point about the difference between a Playmaker and a Shutdown Corner.
Champ and Nnamdi are shut down, while Woodson and Asante are playmakers.
Revis can shut down and make plays but his attitude is messed up.
News that we signed Lendale White..
Seriously? We signed Lendale White? Where did u see that?
I got a text from Mike Florio
I googled that florio and I didn’t see anything.
