The second practice of the day kicked off in cooler weather as the players practiced in shells and shorts.
Robert Ayers didn’t miss a practice after getting shaken up this morning, but he did wear an elbow brace on his left arm. Champ Bailey, Brian Dawkins and Brandon Stokley all returned to practice for the evening session after taking the morning off.
Stanley Daniels made his return to the practice field as well, entering the lineup as the first-unit right guard.
D.J. Williams, Jamal Williams, Daniel Graham, Jabar Gaffney and Demaryius Thomas sat out the afternoon session. They all appeared to be headed to the weight room for a workout along with Knowshon Moreno and Correll Buckhalter.
OFFENSE’S TURN
Kyle Orton said this morning that the offense needed to work on its consistency after a “flat” practice. Suffice it to say that the offensive side of the ball bounced back.
The session was highlighted by a one-minute drill to close out practice, and the offense — led by Orton — started its drive in its own territory with the score tied. Just a couple plays into the drive, with the ball at the 46-yard line, Orton dropped back and fired a pass deep to Brandon Lloyd. The receiver, who had streaked past Perrish Cox toward the end zone, found the ball in the air and came down with it to raucous applause from the fans in attendance before being brought down at the 6-yard line. The offense hurried to the ball and spiked it to stop the clock with just two seconds remaining, setting up what would’ve been a Matt Prater field goal.
Stokley got involved in the highlights earlier in practice, when Orton dropped back and launched a deep ball that looked like it might be overthrown. The veteran kept running, however, sprinting under the ball to haul it in with his fingertips just past Nate Jones. After the play, Jones spent time talking with secondary coach Ed Donatell.
It didn’t take long for Justin Fargas to get into the action. The newcomer broke through the line on a handful of runs, much to the delight of the crowd.
Alric Arnett made back-to-back athletic catches midway through practice. First, he adjusted to a pass thrown by Orton to his back shoulder, diving toward the ground to haul it in. He followed that up with a leaping catch of a ball delivered by Tim Tebow.
Orton dropped passes into the middle of the defense on two consecutive throws at the end of 7-on-7s — first to Britt Davis, then to Stokley.
DEFENSIVE PLAYMAKERS
That wasn’t to say that the defense didn’t have its fair share of highlights as well.
Topping them all might have been Bailey in coverage. The veteran quickly closed on a pass toward Stokley, tipped it in the air and corralled it for an interception.
Cassius Vaughn had a highlight, as well. When Orton fired a quick screen pass to Matthew Willis, the receiver dropped the ball — and since the pass was technically a lateral behind the line of scrimmage, Vaughn scooped up the ball and sprinted into the end zone for a defensive score. On the very next play, Orton went right back to Willis, who caught a pass in front of Vaughn.
Alphonso Smith got into the action, breaking up a deep pass intended for Arnett during 11-on-11s. Dawkins had a notable pass breakup as well. During 7-on-7s, the safety leaped into the air to swat away a pass intended for Richard Quinn.
Andre’ Goodman snagged the second interception of the afternoon session when he outjumped Willis for the pick.
QUICK HITS
Friday morning’s practice has been closed to the public. For an updated practice schedule, click here or call the training camp hotline — (720) 258-3709.
The first two players on the field Wednesday afternoon? Orton and J.D. Walton. The two practiced their quarterback-center exchanges in between sprints.
Toward the end of practice, Head Coach Josh McDaniels sounded an air horn before announcing “Water up!” Trainers and training camp interns sprinted onto the field with bottles full of water and Gatorade, and the players took a quick break.
Speaking of which, the NFL and Gatorade encourage you to “Beat the Heat” this summer with proper hydration and nutrition before, during and after practices and games. For more, click here.
Before practice began, The Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling” was pumping through the speakers. Ryan McBean had just made his way onto the field when the song kicked in, and the defensive linemen clearly enjoyed what he was hearing. He danced his way toward the rest of the defensive line, even spinning a few times with his arms outstretched.
President and CEO Pat Bowlen made his way out to the practice field to watch Wednesday’s afternoon session.
The linebackers had a competition going to see who could catch the most interceptions while running through a drill. Defensive assistant Craig Aukerman fired passes as hard as he could toward the ‘backers, who celebrated if they made the catch and taunted others who let it fly off their hands.
During defensive line drills, position coach Wayne Nunnely reminded his players to not just go through the motions. “I don’t do drills just to do drills,” he shouted.
TRAINING CAMP JUKEBOX
The afternoon session featured an eclectic mix. It kicked off with Bell Biv DeVoe’s “Poison,” then jumped straight into Poison’s “I Want Action.” Next up was Blur’s “Song 2,” and finally Matisyahu’s “One Day” closed out the warmups.
Below are pictures from the session.

Dawkins is a BEAST!!!!
yes sir Jesse.
jf…You took the words right outta my mouth man,I swear I was gonna post the same exact thing…hahaha !!!
Glad to hear Ayers is back,I expect great things from him,I know he’s got the talent, just needs to unleash his wrath this year !!!GO BRONCS!!!!!!
If we can trust what we read this sounds as one of the best practice so far, both sides of the ball and no injuries reported. Orton, Stokley, Lloyd, Fargas and Goodman all shined, Willis on the other hand had a big faux pas dropping a lateral returned by Vaughn for a TD, but it was nice to hear Orton went right back to Willis who beat Vaughn on the reception. Man, good news is few and far between in this TC, I’ll take whatever I can get. Good deal.

I hope there’s nothing to the rumor that Baltimore is wanting Goodman, surely McD won’t even think about letting him go,he played great last year.
Ditto that, I was kind of shocked to read that!
Re-reading the blog I realize that this was not a full pads practice, just shell and pads, probably had something to do with the success of it, thought that needed clarification, but still encouraging, seems like McD is all of a sudden not a great full pads all out practicing coach anymore, at least nowhere near what he used to do and preach, can’t blame him, adapt is the name of the game here.
Not shell and pads, meant shell and shorts.
nothing on decker. Whats up with Deck?
And a Goody for either Mc….. Gahee or Clain, anyone? besides we need another Mc.
My boy Cox can play opposite Bailey.
Go McGenius, Go Broncos!!!
Decker reportedly has a high ankle sprain, usually tougher and longer to recover than regular ankle sprain, and with the time he has missed, all OTA’S and most of TC, it’s going to be tough to expect him to do more than just spot duties for us in my opinion.
posting too c
Thanks, for the thousand and 1 times BAY.
Go McGenius, Go Broncos!!!
BTW, it seems as if the time on the posts is an hour early, like it should be about 9:08 mtn time now, correct? Or I just gained an hour somewhere, doubt it though.
KFS, you like what you see? LOL.
nope, comments hiding again bud, LOL
LMAO
Wished they would go back to the old blog,it finally got fixed and BAM they changed it,now it’s screwed up again!
Going back to a previous post,I think McD would be making a HUGE mistake even thinking about trading Goody,we have the best secondary in the NFL.IMO,why f@#$ it up?? this is the best corner combo I’ve ever seen in Denver.
Is Decker back out there?
Stokely will be back this year, because of the injury to Decker,so the “slot machine” will have at least one more year to shine as a Bronco,I think he’s still capable of giving us another stellar season.
Sorry, hadn’t read the earlier posts…..
does anyone know what Thomas’ injury was? did he aggravate his old injury?
weird.
It sounds as if Orton is really doing well! lol
Man, I cant wait for Sunday. I can officially get that KC taste out of my mouth!
GO BRONCOS 2K10!!!!!!!!!!
so any time table on our receivers? days ago there was news that neither injury was long term, but how long should we expect? 1 week 2 maybe? is there any chance at all Thomas could play sunday? and whats White’s status and Gaff for that matter?
Wait what? Ravens want good man. No way jose. But then agian. It depends on what they are offering lol. They are hard pressed for a vet CB with foxxy hurt for the season. No way I see McD breakign up our veteran secondary. But then again, his philosophy is “If it aint broke, I can prolly fix it…or break it” usually the latter lol. But I also think that Cox might be ready to start opposite champ. and the more reps and experience he gets the better he will be. This is all hypotheticals if we trade goodman of course. Would love goodman to stay but wouldnt be the worst thing in the world depending on what we get. Gives the young guys a head start on the future, Phonzy or Cox…. prolly Cox tho lol

You guys mention Cox and Phonzy, and it’s all good, Cox not Phonzy haha, but you forget all about Nate Jones the free agent acquired from Miami, just like Goodman and Hill, he could be the one really stepping up this year at nickel.
Anyhow, was making my morning round at the post and was just laughing at how Woody and Legwold are filling pages saying close to nothing because like all of us they don’t have a clue regarding many issues faced by the Broncos this year, the season of the “ifs”, but they are paid to write articles, so they do but without answers, just conundrums, funny stuff.
I think all our coaches will have a though job this season cause i cant get this roster down to 53 maybe 65 but not 53
I don’t think we can get rid of Goody. I just don’t know if the younger guys are ready to step up just yet and play opposite of Champ. Then again depends what they’re offering but I just think that Goody has been one of the best CBs playing opposite of Champ. Something we haven’t had in a while.
Good to see the practices are going well. I sure hope all these injuries aren’t a foreshadowing of what is going to come this season. Kind of gets me down. Enough of “Negative Nancy” I’m so ready for this Sunday. I won’t get to watch the game but I’m just ready to see what our team looks like. Hopefully they’ll be some great highlights posted on the site.
Go Broncos!!!!
if i use my computer this site works perfectly but from my brothers laptop i have to post to see what s going on this is horible
Sorry should say “can’t get rid of Goody”
Nevermind I’m dumb.
marshisboss, no problem about getting down to 53 players, the injuries will take care of that in a jiffy, haha.
Bay so in essence the squad will pick itself. LOL. I have been doing some work so have not had much time to keep up but i am sorry Barett is gone even if he was hurt.
Broncos Rock
yovi, about the latest injuries, Decker has reportedly a high ankle sprain, which to me could be considerably longer than a week or two, Thomas did hurt some of the scar tissue on his foot injury but it’s not considered serious, he should be back way quicker than Decker, White doesn’t appear do be a big deal since he was suffering from cramping yesterday at Dove Valley, if you can work out hard enough to get cramps, no way you are seriously hurt, Gaffney, mum on that all around, and I can see why since he is the #1 WR now, bummer there and I’d love an injury report, very concerned about that, one guy you did not mention is Marquez Branson who was carted off with a significant leg injury, and to me that is way more important than folks here are giving it credit to, the guy is a receiving TE who could play fullback, and with Scheffler gone we really need him to step up, big setback. All of that stuff is of course mainly my opinion about how these injuries will play out, but it’s based on the best info I can get, which is few and far between.
Yeah, McGenius got outfoxed by his old boss on Barrett, live and learn, tough lesson for the young coach.
And for those here who where hoping Atwater and Terrell Davis, among others, could come in with the staff in some capacity to help out the team, well got some bad news, Shanahan thought of it before McD:
Atwater, Terrell Davis, Steve Beuerlein and Michael Pittman — former Broncos all — are interns on Shanahan’s coaching staff this summer.
It goes to show that in the end, in the NFL, players and coaches are more loyal to their coaches and players than they are to their respective NFL teams, I understand it but it’s kind of a bummer, as a fan it’s Broncos or nothing for me, working for the Redskins would simply make me sick to my stomach.
Read that article at DP this morning. Good opportunity for them to see if that’s what they really want to do in the future. Sounds like Atwater is really taking it into consideration.
For all we know, McD wouldn’t give them a shot. Who knows. But we have had Elway and Rod Smith helping and wanting to help. Which is great.
Maybe I’m late to the dance but how come Barrett isn’t on the roster anymore. I know we put him on IR but he wasn’t even listed. Did I miss something?
Yeah Brian he was picked up by the Patriots when we put him on injured/waved for 24 hours.
Bay
I think it also depends on who contacted them first. More than likely it was shanahan who contacted them. Because most of them arent like Rod Smith. Rod Smith injects himself into the WR core lol. Plus its just easier to intern and work with someone u know and can get along with. It doesnt reflect how they feel about the organization or McD or anything. At the end of the day u are gonna be working with that staff, and if u already know the head coach and some of them and u already know u can work with them without having to step on eggshells, thats the one u go with IMO.
ps: I think Cox is read for opposite Champ and if he is not, game time is gonna make him ready lol. Do him like we did Darrent. There were some growing pains involved with Darrent (RIP) but he got there eventually. Thats a guy I miss. Same height as phonzy but played BIG.
TRB, that’s why I said Shanahan thought of it before McD.
And still no mention of Nate Jones, poor guy, he will set you guys straight sooner or later, hopefully, agreed Cox could be huge for us, but Nate Jones is worth mentioning way more than Phonzy at this point, just saying.
lmao, yea nate jones is worth mentioning more than phonzy. You have a point. I just mention Cox first over nate because Nate has been a career Nickle back and does it well I believe. To all fairness for phonzy, he was injured alot last year, and was playing Nickle back when he is used to left or right, not to mention he aint have his number (22) but he has it now lol. I think he has been doing pretty good at camp. I am hopefull that a year under his belt will make him what McDaniels saw in him (whatever that was lol) cuz essentially he is a first round pick. He would be our biggest first round Bust since Jarvis Moss. Patience is a virtue. We werent hard pressed for CB help last year. Not enough to trade a 1st round pick for a second round pick. That was just negligent. Especially after seeing all the talent in this years draft….
I have to apologize to Lance Ball, but every time I see his number 35 jersey I think of “Shoelace” Selvin Young. He’s going to have to do a lot to resurrect that tainted number.
I think it’s funny how… people are saying were going to be bad this year, but the moment the ravens lose a cb for the season. The critics are saying the ravens should try and make a trade for goody. The broncos have a good amount of talent with their db. I know I’m tying to be positive about things. But I am still looking forward to a geat season!!!
60 MINUTES OF FOOTBAL GO BRONCOS!!!
So who will be the next RB we sign. I do like are RB`s but we need to stop the bleeding.
IS D.J, JAMAL WILLIAMS, DANIEL GRAHAM, JABAR AND DEMARIOUS HURT???
