September 9th, 2009 - 11:46am by Zach Eisendrath

Prior to Wednesday afternoon’s practice session, Head Coach Josh McDaniels announced the team’s 2009 captains.

The club’s seven captains are: cornerback Champ Bailey, safety Brian Dawkins, tight end Daniel Graham, inside linebacker Mario Haggan, quarterback Kyle Orton, center Casey Wiegmann and inside linebacker Wesley Woodyard.

This season marks Bailey’s third as a team captain, while it is the second time Graham has taken on the leadership role.

All seven team captains were voted on by their teammates.

Stay tuned to DenverBroncos.com for more information on Wednesday morning’s press conferences.

    You forgot Orton!

  2. broncofan96 says:

Im happy for Woodyard I think everyone underates him

  3. gassman9225 says:

I think Woodyard is a hell of a player, good for him on taking on this leadership roll being such a young player!

  4. BroncoFreak24 says:

sweet a lot of those guys are no brainers (Dawkins, Champ, Graham) but I like Haggan, Orton & Weigmann being one since they each play a vital position and good for Woodyard too!!!!

  5. Peytonoverthehillis22 says:

What about D.J. Williams? He should be a captain IMO.

  6. Atwater4Hof says:

Wow! I’m really surprised Haggan and Woodyard got the spots over DJ Williams. Very happy for Woodyard, I think he is a very exciting, up-in-coming talent who will help us for years to come. Overall, I really like the captains. Kinda wish Eddie Royal would have gotten the nod, seems like a very charismatic young guy who I’d love to represent our team.

  7. broncofan96 says:

Ya a little surprised that Eddie and D.J didnt make it but happy for all the Captains.

  8. Atwater4Hof says:

Now they have Haggan listed as ILB on this blog… does this mean Haggan and DJ are playing up the middle with Dumervil and Woodyard outside? Maybe it was just a misprint because it also as Woodyard listed inside meaning either Ayers or Reid as our 4th linebacker

  9. Dynamicdave says:

Glad Orton is on there. Maybe that will stifle some of the negative talk by our “fans” about Kyle. He obviously is showing leadership. I’m excited to see how he leads this O. ALL ABOARD! FIRST STOP, CINCINATTI BUNGLES! CHECK YOUR TICKETS!

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  10. shawn723 says:

D.J. seems to be more of the lead by example kinda guys but im real pumped that woodyard is he will contribute in huge waays on both special teams and defence

  11. broncofan2415 says:

Good to see Woodyard, Royal would have been cool as well

  12. Goatmaster says:

I thought haggan was an outside backer

  13. BucknBronco says:

Our offense moves the ball well, and our defense is going to be ferocious. Our energized team is going to stampede into, and over, Cincy! I expect a defining win to start the season and silence the critics. Or make them scratch their heads at least. I can already hear them saying, “Who could’ve seen this coming??”

    Go Broncos!

  14. brian_schneider says:

Thought maybe Dumervil should have been in there too, maybe even Clady. That’s just intimidating, a 6’7″ tackle meeting at mid-field for the coin toss. Man I’d be scared.

  15. brian_schneider says:

    sorry officially 6’6″

  16. mikew007 says:

DJ isn’t really a leader by nature. Good solid player but not very vocal and keeps to himself.

Not a bad thing but there it is.

I’m always very interested in the team captain choices. Really learn a lot about your team.

  17. Atwater4Hof says:

Does anyone know when the week 1 depth chart is released?

  18. Cali_BroncosFan says:

ever since the Jets game last year I knew Woodyard had leadership abilities.

  19. 07elway says:

Really glad to see Orton’s teammates see him as a respectable leader, that’s huge honor for him. His team is backing him up, no problem… fans need to do the same. As for the others, I would’ve been shocked if Bailey & Dawkins were captains, same goes for Weigmann and Graham. All the choices were good ones. There’s alot of others that would’ve been good candidates for captain. Stokley, Royal, Clady even Hillis. Someone that’s stable and grounded on and off the field.

Can’t wait for Sunday! Go get ‘em boys! ;)

    With faith…
    GO BRONCOS in ’09!!!!

  20. D~J~C~#24is#1 says:

Like the choices. Champ and B. Dawkins are no brainers. I’m kinda surprised to see Haggan though. I guess he’s just more of a vocal leader than D.J. but IMO D.J. is still our best line backer and I think he’s gonna lead this team in tackles. Does any one know when the week 1 depth chart will be released???

    GO BRONCOS!!!!

    DEFENSE WINS CHAMPIONSHIPS!!!!!!!!!

  21. cutlerwillwin says:

I was surprised to see haggan on there as well but he was voted a captain for a reason, love the captain choices though!

  22. bigvon says:

    I love the choices.

I want everyone out there that is confused on why DJ isn’t a captain to keep in mind that these people were nominated and voted on by the team so that doesnt mean that a person is a starter or the best in his position, but that the team voted and felt that the person had the character and leadership abilities that represent them as a unit. For this reason I LOVE seeing Woodyard as a Captain and Everyone else on the list.

I agree that it will be nice to eventually see Royal selected as well as Hillis and hopefully Moreno will step forward and be a leader. Just keep in mind that our best leaders arent always our best players. Hence forth why your best NFL coaches werent or arent hall of fame or multiple time pro bowlers but great leaders teachers and innovators.

  23. theotheredge says:

Wait! What about B Marsh? I thought for sure he’d make the list! J/K LMAO!

  24. mrbroncofan says:

I love seeing Woodyard go from a rookie free agent to a team captain in his second year. Hey maybe Chris Baker can do the same now that that he made the 53 man roster. We could have two future Rod Smith type players out there on defense. Sounds good to me

  25. paulbedichek says:

Very positive.I am under the impression that DJ is our best linebacker but just not that vocal, but his actions speak volumes(remember never complained about all the position changes, whatever is best for the team)Go D.J. GO BRONCOS!!

  26. BoltRaiderHater says:

I am so glad to see Woodyard up there but not surprised. I watched him here @ UK (GO CATS). He is an outstanding individual and a great team player with incredible work ethics. Also awesome to see Orton, looks like its his offense. There are a lot of deserving players, and I think that says a lot about boys. Can’t wait to see Palmer run for his life on Sunday (hopefully in person).
    GO BRONCOS !!

  27. BroncoWildKansan says:

Great Picks!!! We have some reall leadership this year! Glad to see Brian Dawkins in there even with this being his first year as a Bronco!!! WHO’S READY FOR SUNDAY?!!!!?

  28. IBAILEY_24 says:

BAILEY + DAWKINS = 1ST RANKED SECONDARY IN THE NFL

  29. Invesco_Love says:

wow that makes me mad DJ is deffinate leader on that team…..i think if moeno exploads like forte last year we could win alot of games…any news with merriman i hope he get what he deserves

  30. Invesco_Love says:

****moreno**** sorry im on a ps3

  31. Davis4H.O.F says:

Orton is the starting QB of course he got a captain nod..but it is the one captain that is annoiunted by the Coach and is trasdition as a result..won’t quiet any Orton doubters… IMO

  32. DoomervilRocks92 says:

Good for them. I’m a little surprised at Haggan, but the other chioces are good.

  33. DoomervilRocks92 says:

Does anyone else think that Ayers should start at outside linebacker?

  34. MOPH_broncofan says:

would have liked to see DJ as an captain besides Haggen and Woodyard… but its team voted so what u gonna do?!?!? we just need to step up this year no matter who is captain… if we r going to get some W’s!!!!!

  35. raidrhadr says:

You guys….paulbedichek is right….DJ has said publicly…in the media that he prefers to offer his ACTIONS as leadership not words. So he’s not the Brian Dawkins type to get em all hyped up and focused. He is a great player and I’m sure the boys in the locker room agree but I’m not surprised at all he’s not a captain. Love the player though. Go 55!!!

Congrats to all the new Team Captains
Congrats to Haggan and Woodyard who have overcome a difficult transition to the current 3-4 D and emerged as leaders. Looking forward to a win at Cincy.

GO BRONCOS!!!! South Stands Forever!!! The Orange Crush Lives!

  36. LBWilson56 says:

DDave????07Elway????hello???Are you two getting any of the blogs i mentioned to you??Anyway, relly proud that Haggan is captain as i knew he had that type of leadership quality in him.As for Woodyard,no brainer the mans a stud…Buckle in folks!!!Here we go…….
    STAY POSITIVE PEOPLE!!!!…..P.S..typo..meant (really)

  37. DoomervilRocks92 says:

I think that DJ might be one of the most under-rated players that the Broncos have, to the media and analysts. All they think we have on defence is Champ, now Dawkins, and some say Doom as well. DJ has been one of the most consistant defensive players for the Broncos.

  38. Dynamicdave says:

Hey, Marshall could present a great case to motivate the players! SERIOUSLY!!

“Guys, as you have seen, I really scr*wed the pooch, lately. If there were ways to mishandle your football career, I’ve had lots of practice. To be successful in this league, don’t follow my example. Use my history as a life lesson on what NOT to do. You will fulfill all your hopes and dreams by doing the opposite of what I have done in the past. Now excuse me, but I am late for a photo shoot with People Magazine.”

Hey, it would get MY attention!

  39. DoomervilRocks92 says:

DDave: LOL! Although, sadly, it’s true. Mabye not the People Magazine (hey, you never know :) )

  40. Cali_BroncosFan says:

DR92 I agree with you. If Marshall does get a contract extensions like it was reported on broncotalk.net Im getting his jersey

  41. The_Ink says:

Brandon Marshall and the front office are discussing a contract extension!!!

    IT’S ABOUT TIME!!!

  42. oldsouthstander says:

It was very enlightening to listen to McDaniels press conference. What got my attention was his talking about Orton and Marshall spending extra time together after practice was over. It says two very important things to me:
    1) Orton will start Sunday otherwise he wouldn’t risk hurting his finger with extra throws.
    2) It may not be permanent, but Marshall is busting his buns to get up to speed.
Some very interesting and surprising captain choices. I like the choice of Woodyard, aka the reincarnation of Tom Jackson.

  43. royalbroncofan1 says:

Great honor for the above mentioned players to be voted in by their peers. The way it should be.
As 07elway said… a great vote of confidence for Kyle!!
What a great feeling it will be on Sunday to see our boys hit the Field!!!!!

    GO BRONCOS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  44. DoomervilRocks92 says:

Just me, but if they work out a new contract with Marshall, they should add money deduction for run-ins with the law.

  45. 07elway says:

LBWilson… I’m confused! What you talkin’ about dude? lol

Totally agree with you Dave. It could actually help #15′s situation if he made a statement like that. I know I would start to respect him again. He needs to admit his mistakes to the fans and say exactly what you said up there. “Use my history as a life lesson on what NOT to do.” Perfectly said. I’m sure his teammates would respect him more if he admitted his mistakes and owned up to them. He’s being a wimp. Trying push the blame off himself and just forget it. Life doesn’t work that way, hun. It’s about time he own his mistakes AND learn from them. It’s the only way he’ll succeed in life. There’s a reason why he has yet to be voted a team captain. It takes more than talent on the field to be a great football player.

  46. broncos20 says:

wow! i’m psyched about Woodyard being named captain. This guy is vocal. He fired up the team last season against the Browns when he stared down Jamal Lewis after taking him down. That’s passion for the game. Dj would be great too, altough he leads by example.
But having Dawkins at the coin toss is just plain scary…lol….

Hey, I gotta say, I am impressed with Ochocinco, this guys looks like a better player.
    heres a link on him:
    http://www.nfl.com/videos/cincinnati-bengals/09000d5d81279fbc/The-new-Ocho

hope it works. defenses should respect this guy. says he’s got something new for opening week…our defense better keep him from doing it…lol

  47. broncos20 says:

OH! forgot,, word is out that the Broncos have started contract talks with BMarsh

  48. bradford'10 says:

    My captains would have been:

    Offense: Kyle Orton
    Eddie Royal
    Ryan Clady
    Defense:Brian Dawkins
    Champ Bailey
    Elvis Dumervil or D.J. Williams
    Special Teams:Wesley Woodyard

  49. bronc fan in WA says:

We need Marshall for Royal, Moreno, (Any Denver QB), to be successful for the next few years. McDaniels knows that

  50. Dynamicdave says:
