Meet the Bronco Mo Bros

November 1st, 2012 - 9:46am by Chris Hall

It takes a man to grow a mustache, and the Broncos are looking for a lot of them to help spread the word about Movember and raise awareness for men’s health issues.

For the next 30 days, several Broncos players will commit to growing a mustache to promote a discussion about men’s health. The facts are scary: one in six men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in his lifetime (the incidence rates are nearly double for African American men). Testicular cancer is also the most common cancer in American males between the ages of 15 and 35. However, both of these diseases are highly curable with early detection. This means guys need to shelve the tough guy image and talk about the importance of getting checked.

It’s simple, Movember aims to forever change the face of men’s health through the power of the mustache by raising awareness and funds for prostate and testicular cancer initiatives. The Broncos want you to register and join the Movember movement. We’ll provide updates on our Movember efforts on DenverBroncos.com all month long.

To get everyone on an even playing field, you have to start the month from scratch with a clean shave. Players participating went to Floyd’s Barbershop for an old fashioned straight razor shave. Check out the trip and who’s committing to Mo here. You can view pictures from the players getting straight razor shaves here.

You can check out the team’s official Movember page here, share with your family and friends and upload pictures of how your Mo is growing.

Movember is about real men growing real mustaches, talking about real issues. Help spread the word and to commit to grow your Mo this month.

Just talked about that at length here last year, how the NFL always did all this stuff for women cancer awareness and nothing for men.

It pays to speak up, LOL.

Thanks for rightfully filling a blank, in a purely man sport like the NFL it seems most important to get men to be aware of such things as testicular, prostate and colon cancer too btw. Get your regular prostate and colonoscopy exams old guys (over 50). That would be Elway, Fox and me, LOL.

Haha… My cousin is 32 and a Ginger and he has been growing his Movember Stash for two weeks just to get a head start!!! His kids showed up with Movember shirts and i had to take the bait and ‘uhhhh, what is Movember’ and them Wham, Aunt D bust out a Pick of Ty and it was good for laugh anyway!

Not sure how getting rid of your more talented position players makes your team better? I’ve heard alot of explanaitions as to why certain individuals would cut loose a guy or two but haven’t read anything that is the least bit convincing as far as reasoning is concerned!

My Vote is for GENOS DERWIN (DJ’s real name) to start at MLB… the guys a playmaker and if you can’t admit it because he has off the field issues then it’s more of a grudge really and not a ‘business’ decision atall really right?

    B-R-O-N-C-O-S BRONCOS BRONCOS BRONCOS!!!

Some Stats to back my view, for those of you that like a little hard evidence and not just alot of ‘Huff&Puffery”…

’04/’05 – 114 Tackles as a Rookie on the Weak Side (his Natural Position)
’05/’06 – DJ moves to Strong Side LB and our LB’s are as good as we’ve ever had with Wilson, Gold and Williams
’07/’08 – After Cutting Al Wilson (injury) we moved Genos to MLB where he had 141 Tackles
’09/10 – Moved to ‘Jack’ position or ILB in a 3-4 and had 122 tackles and 3.5 sacks
    ’10/’11 – 119 tackles and 5.5 Sacks

DJ is a real beast on the field. where he plays downhill and often behind the LOS (something W2 is not as good at yet as DJ) I do admit that he is a real bonehead off the field. I’m not defending his character but I am definately not agreeing with anyone that thinks DJ doesn’t help take this D to the Next level… Facts are in the Numbers

Actually Bay, I just volunteered for Denver’s breast cancer awareness ceremonies and there were many male survivors as well as one who performed a song with us. His story was compelling. I agree that there should be more focus on all cancer and related illnesses.

Here is a great article about Steven Johnson! Hard not to cheer for this kid and I’m excited to see him on the Active Roster this week!

  5. baylinorcrush says:

Turtle, frankly nobody in their right mind would ever attempt to try to convince you of anything, that’s a gimme, as far as you reason Tebow outed was a bad move, Manning’s signing was a bad move, RG3 will be a bust, who would want to argue this type of reasoning, just by pass my crap is my advice. Moreno and DJ are the best thing going for the Broncos right now, how about that, sounds good to your reasoning?

  6. Bronco_Turtle says:

Bay, How is Matthew ‘My Boy’ Willis playing this season? he was the next big thing also right…

If we win the Superbowl then I will stand 100% corrected about Peyton and Tebow!!! Jury is still out there I think, Peyton has been fun to watch but I explained my views very plainly

  7. baylinorcrush says:

It’s hard to crack the line up with DMT, Decker and Stokley, Willis is a good guy who will do fine wherever he is.

  8. RH709 says:

Compare W2 numbers and remember he is an undrafted player.
So far this year W2 has 61 tackles, 3 sacks, 1 forced fumble, and 2 INTs.
That puts him on pace to break DJ’s numbers from his years as WLB.

I’m not saying DJ sucks. He is a cabable starter. I just think Denver has the talent to replace him with the added benifit of not having to deal with the off field antics.

  9. Bronco_Turtle says:

ahhh, the same DMT you called a glass man and called for his head as well? I’m not going to fight or argue, and in fact my post was not directed at you in the least, but simply made as a counterpoint to anyone that likes to hear both sides of any given story…

  10. Bronco_Turtle says:

Sure RH, but DJ played that position as a Rookie, and W2 has had the benefit of playing behind and alongside of DJ for several seasons…

DJ will make this team better as an MLB, which is what I think I’ve been trying to say, he has talent and he should be on the field when available, that’s all

  11. RH709 says:

Good article Turtle. I figured Harris had something to do with it. This is the kind of guy you want sitting behind Brookings. He is soaking up everything Brookings and JDR are teaching. This type of desire is contagious and it seems like the whole team has it with Manning leading the way.

    Thank you John Elway!

  12. gabeharter says:

I liked Tebow and stood by Him. And personally would have loved to see him stay as a backup to PM. My only concern was PM’s health. He is doing awesome and i have no complaints. I think MR. P, JE, and John Fox did awesome! We all Bronco Fans … Let’s express our opinions and argue… just remember it’s sports opinion nothing personal! i have agreed and disagreed with both of you… and have been right on some things and wrong on others… facts don’t lie. and i admit if my opinion was wrong or invalid after facts happen.

  13. baylinorcrush says:

Actually I was all for drafting DMT instead of Dez, big proponent of his, and then he went brittle on us, glad he was able to turn that around because he is everything I want in a player and Dez is everything I don’t want in one. Those standards will never change for me, not even for Cutler, Marshall and DJ as everyone knows, I call it integrity, some care for it in their lives some don’t, it’s our lives, we all live them how we choose to. Gotta go eat lunch now, play nice, LOL.

  14. gabeharter says:

I love the articles you guys post and when you explain your opinion not just state that it;s your opinion… I think both of your contributions to the blog makes it very interesting and unbiased reading…

  15. gabeharter says:

In all fairness…. i liked DMT over Dez from the get go… and i am sure i called for his head also but i think alot of his improvement has to do with good coaching and by Peyton Manning’s leadership. JFTR i am still a Tebow fan. I think Tebow had awesome leadership… and is an awesome example for life… but PM bring’s leadership that ALL player’s respect because of what he has accomplished on the field along with his good character and work ethic. I think Tebow lacked the experience to be that leader which takes time… nothing that was his fault. I still wish we had him as back-up… but i like this brock kid and the rest of our draft so i won’t be whining.

  16. gabeharter says:

Good point RH! I love the veteran youth mix we have at each position! I think we our much more talented at starting and getting depth. Alot has to do with JE and the coaches he has selected..

  17. Bronco_Turtle says:

Thanks Gabe! And you are right Bay, it’s your life/story so tell it how you like!

I love this team, always have, always will!

    B-R-O-N-C-O-S BRONCOS BRONCOS BRONCOS!!!

  18. gabeharter says:

AHHHH!!! It’s still several days until sunday! I am ready to watch THEE game sunday! I hope we play lights out D like last week!!

  19. gabeharter says:

I have never been more excited as a Bronco fan!! …. JE is making good decisions and its starting to show.

  20. Bronco_Turtle says:

Who are you guys taking in Tonights ball game between KC and SD?

I’m thinking this could be one of the ugliest games of the season on Television!

I’m going with 36.5 as the over/under and I’ll take SD and give you -6… any takers?

  21. gabeharter says:

BT… can you explain this? haha i have no clue bro..

  22. RH709 says:

What we all know as fact is that DJ will not be handed a starting role at either WLB or at MLB. He will have to earn it every step. I don’t think he will beat out either Brookings or Woodyard. DJ will play some snaps for sure and there will be good and bad. I think he finishes out the season as a backup and then Denver will move on.

  23. DaddyBronc says:

SD is demoralized and KC doesn’t have a QB. Hard to even want to watch the game. I suppose it is my duty as a Bronco fan. With apologies to Scalp….I always like KC better than SD and ‘that other team “Fading” from my memory’.

  24. gabeharter says:

DJ might challenge Brookings at his spot for playing time based on skill if our coaches let him play. He better keep his nose clean if he wants a starting NFL job period. I personally hope he cleans up his act … he is a very talented player!!

  25. RH709 says:

Yeah, tonights pillow fight will be interesting.

I think the problems of both these teams start at the very top.
A.J. Smith and Scott Pioli are horrible. Until they are replaced, these teams will continue to faulter.

So naturally, I suppot both of them :)

  26. gabeharter says:

I think the Raiders may become a more respectable team moving forward… If and Only if DA can Get the outlaw attitude out of their blood. I have Respect for him as a coach but i think he was put in a tough spot with the task he was given… if he makes their team identity change from the dirty play they are well known for i think he is an amazing coach. I hope either way We take them to school like this last game.

  27. gabeharter says:

haha RH thats 2 funny! Like your thinking…

  28. RH709 says:

    @BT, I’ll take the under. KC +3

  29. SWBronco says:

    Gabe,

Personally as much as I hate dirty play, it has always made hating the Raiders that much easier that they were the “outlaw” team. Plus it is so ingrained in their organization that it’s gonna take forever for that to go away haha.

  30. Bronco_Turtle says:

    Sure thing Gabe!

Casino’s use a system of Handicapping games that is intended to get the bets as close to 50/50 as possible. The over/under is the total number of points that the handicappers predict will be scored in a game, so say if the line is at 36.5 and you think the two teams combined will score 37 points then you can be the over, if you think the teams will score 36 or less you take the under and place a wager. Also, since the Casino likes to distribute the action as evenly as possible they give the team that is percieved as dominant a points disadvantage which is known as the ‘Spread’.

There are two ways to bet the games for winners, Moneyline (which is simply which team will win) and in many instances if you take the favorite on a moneyline bet you can make as little as .14 cents for each dollar you wager… example, San Diego is the favorite tonight and playing at home, but say I don’t want to lay any points because I don’t feel that confident in my assessments I can bet Moneyline for Chargers to win and if they do win by a single point you recieve your payout. When betting against the spread it is much more difficult to pick a winner and thusly your payouts can be as haigh as 1.75 or more when giving points…

For the hardcore gamblers you can literally ‘buy’ points and add them to the spread to increase the payout… so if I thought the Chargers would win by two touchdowns I would buy 7 points over the original spread of -6 thus giving the Chiefs a 13 point advantage as far as how much the Chargers have to score for my bet to pay… This is where fortunes are made, and once you get good at laying points you can have bets that can pay as much as $4 dollars for every dollar wagered…

In the instance of tonights game I set a line of 36.5 for total score, and I feel that the Chargers will win by at least 6 points…

    Clear as Mud right?

  31. gabeharter says:

This is off topic but has anyone other than me notice Champ Bailey’s play against the run this year?! Especially against divison opponents… in the raider game he was watching DM all Day! Then against NO he played like he wanted revenge against Darren Sproles for the big playes in the past.. I know he hasnt got a INT yet but i think that has alot to do with him covering the best wideout and the respect Qb’s have for him.

  32. DaddyBronc says:

Bay – “Those standards will never change for me, not even for Cutler, Marshall and DJ as everyone knows, I call it integrity, some care for it in their lives some don’t, it’s our lives, we all live them how we choose to”

    Well said!

I think the character issues are what separate “team” from “great individual performances”. DJ could have 600 tackles a year and I would still consider him a detriment to the “team”.

  33. gabeharter says:

haha okay… got ya. Thanks for explaining!

  34. Bronco_Turtle says:

haha RH, pillow fight! that’s a good one!

Hola DB!! How’s your day man…? I’m sick at home with the flu for the second straight day and hating life right now

  35. RH709 says:

Here is a new nitch we haven’t argued. Legwold thinks DJ would see the field when denver lines up in a 3-4 look.

  36. RH709 says:

    Thanks guys lol
I agree with you on the Raiders Gabe. As much as it pains me.

  37. gabeharter says:

I agree with you to a point DB… but 600 tackles would be nice.. maybe Jx3 … aka JE JF JR can straighten this cancer out… I have never heard of DJ being a poor locker room guy… just the mistakes he has made in the offseason… which i think he should have been and was punished for… I just hope he comes out a new man.

  38. DaddyBronc says:

We have had some flu go through our house as well…but I don’t have time for that. Wishing you a rapid recovery!

I’m speaking to 100 kids tonight and again on Sunday night. Tough audiences! LOL Putting together Power Points and materials and such today.

  39. ScalptheChiefs says:

No need for apologies DB we all hate our division rivals differently! As for tonight I am expecting to see a repeat game from San Diego last week, since the opponent is just about as good this week lol. I would love to see the Chargers lose but I think they figure out KC this week and get the win.

  40. gabeharter says:

RH i like what he says as Von being the hybrid 3-4 4-3 guy… line up as LB on one play and as a DE on another play…. it’s an interesting thought. but i think we would be light on depth at LB if we did that unless our rookies Danny Trevathon and Steven Johnson can be backup at all LB positions.

  41. RH709 says:

Gabe, it is almst impossible to get an INT for Bailey. He may get thrown to zero to 2 times in a game. He may get a total of 32 chances to pick off a pass a season. Bailey usually finishes a season with between 10 and 20 passes defended and 1 or 2 interceptions. He is judged purely on his play no his stat line. He is absoluetly astonishing.

  42. RH709 says:

And your also right about how well he plays the run but he has been good at that his entire career too.

  43. Bronco_Turtle says:

Thanks DB! and Good Luck tonight! What up Scalp, good to see you!

I’ll be back a little later, i’m going to go lay down…

  44. RH709 says:

Trevathan is starting to show what I am pretty sure he was drafted for, GOOD LB COVERAGE. so far its a small sample size in a young carreer but he is surely developing well.

  45. DaddyBronc says:

Gabe – I would love to see DJ turn it around and become the player he has the potential to be. He could be a great Bronco. I put no stock in the “I’m sorry guys, my bad” type of apology. I would rather see a guy say “I’m making such and such changes…I don’t expect your respect, but I am going to work my tail off to earn your respect again.” Instead, all we get from DJ is more criminal charges.

  46. gabeharter says:

I defintely agree RH… i think thats why he is so underrated at this point in his career though… the same people who said the old raiders CB was better than bailey say revis is better… i will still take champ over revis today even at this year in his career. Revis wouldnt play the run like champ does… he is a talker and thats why he is well known… he is an excellent player but not better than bailey… i will see in his 13th year how he plays haha…

  47. gabeharter says:

I agree DB i hope they don’t put him back in first game unless the coaching staff see evident signs of change. I think thats why Moreno is warming the bench… he has talent but i think he needs to be humble like a CFA and listen to the coaches instead of thinking his talent will get him playing time even with his bad behavior. I don’t like arrogant attitude from players period but especially after you get suspended… you should have to prove yourself again!

  48. gabeharter says:

1 Thing i loved from last game that i noticed … the way manning got the offense together and talked after each drive almost… you could tell they were all on the same page. Communication and team work goes a long way!

  49. RH709 says:

    Right with ya Gabe.
I would take Bailey every time without question. You can have bailey go man coverage on any guy in the league and he wins 95% of the snaps. It really doesn’t get any better than that.

  50. DaddyBronc says:

Just me…but I think I can see Champ slowing down. His ability to position himself against the pass is unmatched, still…but I don’t think we have Champ for more than another season.
