Coppa Named Coach of the Week

November 4th, 2011 - 10:46am by Stuart Zaas

The Denver Broncos named Canon City Head Football Coach Chris Coppa as this week’s NFL Coach of the Week. Coppa has led his top ranked Class 3A Tigers of the South Central League to an undefeated 9-0 season with a come-from-behind 19-14 victory last Friday over Palmer Ridge. The win gave the Tigers the South Central title and guaranteed them a home playoff game.

“The victory was exciting for our fans, but it gave me more gray hairs,” Coppa said.

Coppa, 49, was born in Canon City, Colo., and graduated from Canon City High School in 1980 and from the University of Northern Colorado in 1984 where he earned a degree in social sciences. He went on to earn a master’s degree in coaching and administration from University of Colorado-Colorado Springs in 1991. While at Northern Colorado, Coppa earned All-Academic North Central Conference honors as a running back. He currently teaches American studies at Canon City in addition to coaching football.

The Denver Broncos will recognize 10 High School Coach of the Week honorees during the regular season. Each weekly winner will receive a $1,000 donation from the NFL Youth Football Fund to be used in the school’s football program. Additionally, during the Broncos’ home game on January 1st, the NFL/Denver Broncos High School Coach of the Year will be named and presented with a $2,000 donation to the school’s football program. This year’s selection committee is led by Neil Devlin of the Denver Post and includes Ring of Fame Member Billy Thompson of the Denver Broncos and Andy Lindahl of KOA.

I attended Canon City HS from 84-86 and remember when he came there to teach and became an assistant football coach.

Congrats to Coach Coppa!!! He’s a great person, teacher and coach (I graduated from Canon City, and even had Mr. Coppa his first year as a teacher in Middle School). Always exciting to see my Tigers doing well.
