Bruton Plays Santa

December 25th, 2011 - 2:36pm by Gray Caldwell

David Bruton is no stranger to helping out in the community.

He’s volunteered at Boys and Girls Clubs, participated in Shop with a Bronco events and supported his teammates with their foundations.

But this Christmas, he wanted to do something a little different.

He adopted a family through the Denver Rescue Mission Christmas Wish list, an annual program the rescue mission facilitates for families in need.

So he took a shopping list with him and got to work. Well, it was less work and more fun.

“I love shopping for kids, so I even put on a Captain America mask, I had the shield and I was shopping with that for a little bit, just having a good old time,” Bruton said.

He bought Transformers, legos and hoodies for the boys. He had a little more trouble picking presents for the girls, so he called his brother for some advice.

He ended up going with dolls, baby strollers and an Easy Bake Oven.

“I had fun shopping for toys,” Bruton laughed. “I even bought myself a Lego set when I got theirs.”

So Bruton contacted the family, who didn’t know he had adopted them, and worked out a time to drop off the gifts.

“When I opened the trunk of my jeep, the dad was just — his jaw dropped in shock,” Bruton recalled.

“All this?” the dad asked.

“Yep,” Bruton smiled. “All this is for you and your family.”

So the four kids, ages 5, 7, 8 and 10, ran out to help carry the gifts inside.

They could hardly contain their excitement as they counted the gifts.

One, two, three … 29, 30, 31…

“Can we open one?” they begged their parents.

“No, no, we’ve got to wait until Christmas,” was the response.

“It was great. The kids had big smiles — teeth all showing,” Bruton said. “I just honestly hope their Christmas is great. I’d like to be able to check in with them just to see how the kids react.”

So while the safety isn’t sure what the kids’ final reaction to the presents will be quite yet, he’s very sure it’s a project he’d like to get involved with again next year.

“It’s the least we can do to give back — it’s no biggie to get out and give a few gifts,” Bruton said. “It’s a chance to go out there and shop. You get to control what they get, you get to make the final decision. I think it’s a great thing.”

“I wish I had my Santa Claus hat,” he smiled. “I would’ve been a skinny one, but I felt like Santa.”

Merry Christmas all. Have a GREAT one.

I would like to agree with Bay and Others when they talk about the kind of game Bruton had. He had a great game. And EVERY time he is put in, even if its only for one play, he either makes a play or doesn’t blow it. The kid can play but we are determined to keep him on special teams. I understand the young rookies gotta learn somehow but its really starting to hurt. Im sure Dawk will be back by week 17 but I wanna see Dawk and Bruton Starting. Plus Bruton is pretty fast.

What A Blessing!! Looks like Bruton might be playing S for awhile for us. He looks good in the SS position bring the wood.

TRB, your on to something, you may be right. Dawk and Bruton for Safety. Rahim is starting to scare me. He`s struggling really bad.

Way to go Bruton. A class act. As a side note, I felt he had a good game yesterday.

I like the way some of you vent. I for one didnt have much hope for the rest of the season after we started 1-4, with that said it has been one heck of a ride.

Tebow will improve, as will most of our young players. We keep drafting solid, and we will be a serious contender soon.

Future looks bright, at least in my opinion. Starting to get nervous about Cowher to the bolts rumor.

Coward doesn’t impress me, he was always the coach who could never close the deal. Bring em on!

What everyone forgets is that this IS a young team with a young leader you’re gonna have games like this against bad teams. I was sick yesterday over this but now I’m rejuvinated and pumped!

The OFFENSE has to be able to score at least 20 points in a game. The D is now worn down and getten beaten. Must convert on 3 down.

Way to give back Mr Bruton, hope to see you in the starting line up along side BDAWK, as I’ve said the last 6 weeks here, we need you guys in the secondary instead of Q and Rahim.

Bruton wasn’t a football player a couple of days ago, he was a compassionate human being whe sees the “BIG PICTURE”.

I realize they’re are hundreds of athletes that do many charitable things and I wish I could read about all of them.

This kid didn’t just write a check, he did it all.

On a similar note, our family lives in Las Vegas and there are thousands of families hitting hard times but don’t believe all the bad news you here about this city.
I’ve lived here for 37 years and this is as bad as it has ever been employment wise ever.

My son graduated from high school in June and has been working at Wal-Mart for two years and they don’t pay much obviously but he saves almost all his money, bought a used car on his own and has recently applied for student loans to help pay for his college courses.

Anyways, I sound proud of him and I am but I was never more proud of him than when he got his last paycheck on Friday.

We have a neighbor with four children who lost her husband to a heart attack on Thanksgiving. My son asked me if it would be okay to give his check to “Shannon” to help her out.

I just hugged and told him that he’s the best thing that ever happened to me.
Sorry to bore some of you with this but he makes me happy to be alive.

I hope all of you have a better year in 2012 even if 2011 was great for you.

Let’s say we start by winning on January 1, 2012. GO BRONCOS!!!!
