Broncos Tackle Hunger

December 7th, 2011 - 8:01am by Stuart Zaas

Several Broncos players spent their off day visiting local schools in support of the team’s ‘Broncos Tackle Hunger’ program.

A group of Broncos that included punter Britton Colquitt, tight end Virgil Green, defensive end Jason Hunter, defensive tackle Ryan McBean, Miles the Mascot and Broncos Cheerleaders visited Bear Creek K-8 School in Lakewood and Lois Lenski Elementary in Centennial for an assemblies. The two schools collected the most non-perishable food items throughout the month of October as part of the the food drive that collected more than 77,000 pounds of food between all of the participating schools.

“It’s real important because these kids give up their time and money and energy to help those less fortunate,” Colquitt said. “And that’s what our job is as people who are blessed, is to give to the those less fortunate and to love our neighbors.”

At the assembly, the group of Broncos fielded questions from the students in attendance.

When asked what he would be if he wasn’t playing in the NFL, McBean told the students he would be a businessman. The audience also found out that Colquitt’s favorite subject in school was social studies – and lunch.

One girl asked the cheerleaders whether cheerleading helped them in school. Both Broncos Cheerleaders agreed that it helped their focus towards school. However, Colquitt joked that he found cheerleading to have the opposite effect on his focus when he was in school, drawing laughs from the group.

When asked to give the group advice, Hunter told the students to, “Listen to your family. They’re trying to help you. Take they’re advice because they’re trying to put you on the right path.”

Green told the audience, “Never let anyone tell you that you can’t do something – that you can’t be a football player, that you can’t be a marine biologist, that you can’t be the president. Take that negative energy and let it fuel you.”

McBean’s response fascinated the students when asked how football helped him in school.

“School taught me self discipline,” McBean said. “When we’re playing a team like Chicago, we get notebooks that we have to study just like you guys have to for homework. We get our notebook and we have homework.”

The group couldn’t believe that professional football players do homework just like they are assigned.

“That’s what school taught me and made me who I am today,” McBean continued. “Remember that you’re helping yourself when you come to school. Listen to your parents and teachers because it will help you in the future.”

The players all enjoyed taking the time to talk to the kids and appreciated the work they did to collect the non-perishable food.

“The kids’ questions were really good,” Colquitt said after the event. “Really smart kids out here. Some of them were really stumping you (laughing). It’s always fun to come out here and we enjoyed it.”

  2. baylinorcrush says:

McBean sounds like a cool guy

And Colquitt as usual is the class clown, haha.

  3. baylinorcrush says:

26 degrees here this morning, it would be a bad time to go without food…

  4. Texan says:

Green’s comment seems to sum up our whole season. We have really taken the early negative energy and let it fuel us. Gotta love it!

Glad to hear this story! Looks like this was donated food, which is great, but there is also so much wasted food every single day by resturants, cafe’s, etc.. It seems that getting that wasted food in the right hands would make a real difference as well. You would think that modern techonolgy would help to coordinate such an effort

Always good to see people who have giving to people who dont. And maybe more guys would have gone if they had all finished their homework lol

It`s good to see the players giving back to the community. The city of Denver is a strong and blessed community. The stories coming out of Detroit are heart breaking. Thats a city thats in major trouble.

    Good morning bay… quick question.

Last night I noticed David Bruton playing FS during 2nd half, on NFLN replay. Did Carter go out with injury?

  9. 3rdGeneration says:

Whos going to have a bigger week, DT or Decker?

  10. baylinorcrush says:

That seems to be the consensus rbf1, but nothing was ever said about it, will hear about it later today in the first injury report of the week.

  11. baylinorcrush says:

My boy Willis, LOL, one can always hope…

  12. 3rdGeneration says:

Did anyone ever find out what happened with Moore? Why was he inactive?

  13. 3rdGeneration says:

Moore is making me nervous. Looking at the post Dawkins era, is it Moore and Carter? Moore doesn’t seem to be impressing anyone at Dove Valley.

  14. baylinorcrush says:

Because he’s got mucho to learn, not NFL ready on our team anyway.

  15. baylinorcrush says:

As we have been finding out on these blogs for now Moore has been more about talk than walk, pretty much opposite of McGahee, not saying much but letting the walking do most of the talking.

  16. baylinorcrush says:

Rookie enthusiasm has taken its toll on the UCLA star, but the NFL ain’t Hollywood, LOL

  17. OrangeTsunami says:

I’m hope that this merely a case of the coaches sending a rookie a message, and hopefully that message was heard loud and clear… It’s WAY to early to even start talking about giving up on RM

  18. baylinorcrush says:

Nobody is giving up on him, he is just not ready now, he needs to settled down, ground his feet and his head, and this is not just a message, he hasn’t started for like ever, or 6 games or so…

  19. 3rdGeneration says:

As I see it there are two ways to learn in the NFL. By playing or by watching. The ones that play seem to consistently be better players. The watchers turn out on occasion, but it’s I’d go on a limb and call it rare (ecspecially on D). For that reason, I’m nervous about Moore. Irving makes me less nervous because MLB is the quarterback of the D and it’s harder to learn. Plus Mays has been playing decently well. On that note, I’m glad one of our rookie safties is getting PT, and playing well (Carter).

  20. baylinorcrush says:

He is the perfect example of a rookie who needs a full off season, like Virgil and Julius too, and Irving, and Mohamed, I mean very few rookies can come in and contribute with a short off season, kudos to Carter, Miller and Franklin.

  21. baylinorcrush says:

Forgot Beal who is on the PS…

  22. Stuart Zaas says:

royalbroncofan1: Carter left the game with muscle cramps.

Heading to Denver this weekend for my first game at Mile High (From Reno, NV). Been a Broncos fan for 22 years, have only seen them play in the awful Oakland Coliseum. Never a fun environment.

    Please get a W boys!

  24. baylinorcrush says:

Thanks, he will be ready to go then.

  25. baylinorcrush says:

Drink plenty of fluids Sunday, haha.

  26. strandoftds says:

If Rahim Moore was ready, he`d be starting, but obviously he`s not. He`ll get his shot again some day but not this year it looks like. I mean he was inactive last sunday. Now thats a wake up call.

  27. theotheredge says:

Yeah, i have already started hydrating in anticipation. Proud to get seats and sit in the South Stands..so excited – like a kid at Xmas.

  28. baylinorcrush says:

BTW, those shirts above are some ugly shirts, no orange whatsoever, glad we’re going back to orange. Good thing it says Broncos, could mistaken them for Raiders, LOL.

  29. baylinorcrush says:

The hydration was for Carter, but that’s awesome for you man, enjoy that precious fleeting moment.

  30. strandoftds says:

    Edge, enjoy, have a blast!

  31. theotheredge says:

LOL! thought you were pointing that one at me. Oh well, it was relevant either way.

  32. royalbroncofan1 says:

    Ok thanks… just curious.

Your boy Willis did well with the underneath routes. Knocked my man Royal out on ST….lol.

  33. baylinorcrush says:

    Yeah, just different fluids, haha.

  34. strandoftds says:

Bay besides Nalen66, anyone else picking us to lose so far?

  35. royalbroncofan1 says:

Ok thanks for update Stuart… much appreciated.

  36. strandoftds says:

    Royal, how goes it?

  37. baylinorcrush says:

Actually other than that one play Willis played all world on ST.

  38. baylinorcrush says:

    Nope.

  39. strandoftds says:

    It`s early.

  40. baylinorcrush says:

And he never really reads much of the blog unless he is on so I bet he has no clue he made it on the WOS, haha.

  41. baylinorcrush says:

Carnage with his two WOS might have some serious competition, LMAO!

  42. strandoftds says:

I`d like to see Matthew Willis catch a deep ball for a TD this weekend.

  43. strandoftds says:

Me too with my large spread of us winning. I`m second guessing myself now. Chicagos defense is a sound one. Oh well.

  44. raidrhadr says:

    We win this one

    Broncos 20
    Bears 13

  45. baylinorcrush says:

Yeah, if we lose you’re a shoe in for the WOS with your 31 point spread, but what are the odds of that? Losing that is.

  46. royalbroncofan1 says:

Pretty good strand but fighting a cold.
    How have you been?
Enjoyed reading your post about little league.

  47. royalbroncofan1 says:

    Broncos – 20
    Bears – 10

  48. strandoftds says:

Heck, play five WR spreads all game. Give Tim a shot up field since the Bears pass defense is struggling. Letter rip!!!!!!

  49. strandoftds says:

I`m doing well. Looking forward to see how this month plays out for the possible playoffs. Thats sounds weird, Broncos in the playoffs. LOL

  50. theotheredge says:

The Bears are always good at covering mobile QB’s (see Michael Vick) Usually Urlacher is assigned to shadow. I dont expect TT to do a lot of scrambling unless in the red-zone. If we game plan similar to Minnesota game, we should be fine.
