The Bye-Week Buzz!

October 28th, 2008 - 10:18am by Romi Bean

Greetings “Bye-Week” fans! I hope you all were able to fill your week with Broncos excitement even though we did not have a game this past Sunday. Though the week is not complete without a Sunday game, I am a big fan of the bye week because it allows our team to rest and assess what changes need to be made for the rest of the season. And the great news is that the Broncos tend to do very well after a week off the gridiron! Now, I must warn you that I am what some may consider a “crazy fan” — but I prefer to think of myself as a diehard fan! I have loved football since I was six years old, and every season I seem to get more and more involved. I think that knowing the history of the Broncos is not only exciting, but always comes in handy when opposing fans are trying to challenge your knowledge! So to start off this week’s blog, let’s go over a little Broncos trivia that may come in handy this Sunday!

Did you know???

-The Broncos record after a bye week is 15-4 since 1990, which ties for the best record in the NFL with Minnesota and Philadelphia

-We are 10-3 after a bye week under Coach Shanahan and have won the post-bye game for the past 5 seasons.

-AND, the Broncos own a better winning percentage (63-34) in the games played after their bye week than games played before (64-38) since the bye was introduced in 1990. I’d say we are in pretty good shape right now!

In spirit of this past week being a week off of football, I thought I’d touch on a huge aspect of what the cheerleaders do off the field, by sharing with you what I did last Saturday. Community involvement is incredibly important to our team, and we take great pride and joy in our involvement throughout the Denver community. As a team, we dedicated more than 1,500 hours of community involvement throughout 85 Colorado organizations last year, and we hope to log in even more hours this year! A new organization that we have become involved with this year is Habitat for Humanity.

Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1976, and since then has built nearly 300,000 homes for more than 1.5 million who are in need of shelter. Every weekend starting in August, two or three cheerleaders have been helping to build a home for a family in Aurora. Saturday was my first time at the site, and I was simply in awe. The jobs for this weekend were insulating the crawl space, caulking, painting, and nailing in parts of the roof. Kim Hidalgo was with me this weekend, and we were ready to get to work as soon as we arrived! We eagerly strapped on our tool belts, hard hats, and protective glasses and got down to business. Our day started at 9 a.m. and ended around 4:30 p.m., and boy did the time fly! We were having such a wonderful time with the other volunteers and working on our projects that we couldn’t believe it when the day was over. We had a great time all day, and the best part was feeling that we made a difference in someone’s life.

We were fortunate enough to meet Stephanie, the woman who will be living in the new home as well as one of her three daughters, Raven. Stephanie worked on the house all day with us, and has been doing so since the beginning. We learned that the individuals who receive homes from Habitat for Humanity must log in at least 100 hours of work into building their own home and 150 hours of building other homes. I think that this is one of the reasons why Habitat is such a special program. By actively building their own homes, these homeowners will be able to take such immense pride in their house and will treasure it so much more than if it was built without their help. They are also able to make lasting friendships with other people in their community who are in their same situation. Habitat definitely brings communities together in a very special and unique way.

After being a cheerleader for four incredible seasons, I have felt the impact of community involvement and can’t imagine my life without it. The special thing about giving to others is that not only do you make an impact in their lives, but they have such a profound impact on you. I have learned so much about myself through the amazing members of the Denver community and am so grateful for every moment spent with them. Getting involved in charities and civic work is an incredibly uplifting experience that benefits so many people, including you! So the next time you are hanging out when the Broncos aren’t playing, find a nearby place to volunteer, and I guarantee you will feel inspired, grateful, and absolutely awesome afterwards!

Thanks for reading my blog, and hope to hear from you all! And LET’S GO BRONCOS!!!

    Hi Romi,

Thanks for catching up with us again. It’s always great to know what you girls are doing and I always learn something new every time one of you blogs with us.

I knew you all spent a lot of time doing community service work for a lot of great charitable causes – but, until now, I didn’t know you were involved in habitat for humanity. It shouldn’t surprise me since you all have so many talents. I think a lot of fans recognize that you’re beautiful women and great dancers but don’t know about the commitments you all make to the community.

I’m just amazed at how you find time to do all of this – on top of your careers, college commitments and family lives. Just another reason you’re the best of the best – not just in the NFL but in all sports.

Even though I’m a Utahn, I still appreciate your efforts. You are a beautiful person (and I’m not speaking of just your looks, although you are a gorgeous woman). Keep the faith. I expect a big victory over the Dolphins!

Romi- I think it’s a great thing you do for the community with events like that. It show that there’s a whole other side to cheerleading. By the way you are very, very beautiful. Keep up the good work.

    Hi Again Romi,

In one of your earlier blogs you gave me some information about the Bronco Barn and asked me to let you know what I thought about it. I actually gave it a try yesterday. I definitely like a lot of the things they have going on there, but unfortunately I got there a little too late yesterday – about 1:00.

Of course, my top priority was to buy a calendar, meet a few of the cheerleaders and get some autographs. By the time I got in, I was just able to wave good bye to the girls as they headed into the stadium. Oh well, a wave is better than nothing.

When I heard the weather forecast for Sunday (sunny and temperatures in the 70′s) I first decided I wanted to paint my chest with the Bronco logo for the game. And I even thought about asking a couple of the girls if they would be willing to pose for a picture with me – but then I got to thinking that might be just a little too crazy and decided against it. Don’t know if you girls are OK with doing a picture with a guy looking that crazy or not?

I was really lucky when I got into the stadium and got to meet Jenn and Katie inside Gate 9. They were so friendly, engaging and genuinely glad to see all of us. And even more beautiful in person than in their pictures. None of this really surprised me, of course, every Bronco cheerleader I’ve ever met has been like that. Then I really wished I had brought my camera and had a calendar. Jenn and Katie were nice enough to sign the poster for me and would have been glad to do a picture as well. Of course, I told them how proud we, as fans, are of all you girls.

So I plan on buying a cheerleaders calendar before the Raiders game on the 23rd and hopefully getting some of the girls to sign it.

Romi, do you know if the promotions inside Gate 9 – and any other locations around the stadium will be going on at the other home games?

Thanks for keeping in touch with us. It’s so much fun for us to keep up with you girls.

    Don

  13. Romi Bean says:

    Hi Don,

Great to hear from you again! I’m glad you made it to the Barn. If you want to catch the cheerleaders there, we get there at 12:30 and leave around 1:15. So try to be there before 12:30 and you will definitely be able to see us! Also, we would be so happy to take a picture with a fan that is painted all crazy! We love to see our fans really get into the spirit! Also, the cheerleaders will still be at Gate 9 at the rest of the home games as well as the Barn, the team store, and the club levels. So hopefully we will see you at the next game!

  14. SuperBowl_32 says:

    Hi Romi,

I really appreciate you and the other girls taking the time to answer all of our posts – even when they are “seconds” and “thirds” like some of mine. And it’s great to know that you and your teammates are cool with taking pictures with painted up crazy fans. I’m not a teenager anymore, but I’m definitely going to do the paint up thing the next time we have warm weather – even if it’s not until Fan Fare next spring.

So one way or another we’ll try to catch up with you on the 23rd. Do you know yet where you’ll be for that game ?

BTW, we got our 2009 calendar yesterday. I wanted to go to the calendar release party in August, but we had out of town company and were busy entertaining them. Romi, I’m just blown away by how these calendars seem to get more perfect every year. And your picture is absolutely phenominal. I’ve heard from a couple of the other girls about how much work goes into the calendar shoot – and making every shot perfect. I just hope you found some R&R time while you were there. So thanks to you and all your teammates for brightening the days of so many fans throughout the year.

And …. our two year old grandson in New Jersey said his first “Go Broncos” last weekend. Not quite the first words he’s said (“mama” and “dada” came a while back) but it was fun to hear. Of course he had a little bit of coaching from his dad – a lifelong Bronco fan himself.

Well, I know you’re busy so don’t want to take up too much of your time.

    Thanks for keeping in touch.

    Don

  15. Romi Bean says:

    Hi Don,

Well its great to hear from you more than once! Like I said in one of my blogs, connecting with our fans is of utmost importance to us, and I feel so lucky that I am able to get to know you all better through this blog!

In terms of pre-game promotions, we don’t find out where we will be until the Thursday before the game. So I will try to let you know before the next game!

Thank you so much for your compliments on the calendar. We work very hard all summer long to make the calendar the best it can be. Every year, Teresa manages to make it even more amazing than the year before. This year we had two photographers and each cheerleader took an individual shot. I think the changes we made this year have been so wonderful and have made the calendar the best yet!

And way to go raising your grandson as a Broncos fan!! Awesome!!!

    Take care!

    Romi!!

Hello again…and thanks again for all you do in the community. I grew up in Colorado, born in Denver and raised just about everywhere… Northglen, Thornton, Greely, Gilcrest, Ft. Collins, Dinasaur, Grand Junction. I came from humble beginnings and we actually lived in a house that was built much like the habitat for humanity home, of course, it didn’t exist back then. But with your support, a lot of family’s get a chance to have a home… that may otherwise not have. So again, thank you!

I’m over in Korea now working with the U.S. military. I’ve never gotten a chance to meet you girls but, I hope you’ll head this way someday. Until then, keep up the good work and GO BRONCOS!!

    Hi Romi,

I had another question (how’s that for a surprise)?

I was wondering about your very pretty name. No surprise there – beautiful names always seem to go with beautiful women.

Is Romi your full name or a nick name? And do you pronounce it with a long O (like the city in Italy) or a short O ?

And how about our Broncos? Getting back on track again – and maybe playoff bound !!
