Looking Ahead

December 30th, 2008 - 4:12pm by Romi Bean

Hello Broncos Country! So I know that we are all wearing big frowns now that our season has come to an end. It’s always hard to envision our lives without football for the next few months. But with the end of a season comes the excitement of preparing for a new one and improving upon our mistakes. And if it makes you feel better, just remember that we are not alone in our sadness – Detroit became the first team in NFL history to go winless and finish 0-16, and both New England, the defending AFC Champions, and Dallas, the preseason Super Bowl favorites, failed to clinch a playoff spot.

And what many people are forgetting is that the Broncos have been playing against some of the league’s biggest talent despite a myriad of injuries. With an appalling number of running backs injured, we still managed to maintain a running game and score two rushing touchdowns in week 17. At the end of the day, not everyone can make the playoffs; but hopefully the disappointment will inspire our team to work vigorously through the off season. And though the season ended on a disheartening note, we can all be proud of the Broncos for prevailing through so much adversity.

When a season comes to an end, it is time for us to look forward; we can bring with us lessons from the mistakes we have made, but we can’t waste our time looking back. As 2009 approaches, the Broncos will now have the opportunity to rest, reenergize, train, improve, and heal those daunting injuries. Having an extra month in the off-season may be just what the Broncos need – the players can use this time to rehabilitate and ameliorate their injuries. They have the desire to improve and make the necessary changes for the 2009 season. There is nowhere to go but up – and that is where the Broncos are going. Something that every football fan looks forward to during the quiet spring months is the NFL draft. And it looks like the Broncos are going to get the opportunity to pick early. We beat out three other teams who also finished 8-8 to get the highest picking rank. In the first round the Broncos will have the number 12 draft pick. Rewind back to 2006 for a moment – the Broncos drafted someone very important with their number 11 pick. Who was that? Oh yes, Jay Cutler! And last year’s number 12 was Ryan Clady!

Though the exact 2009 schedule has not been released, the Broncos already know who they will be facing next season. They are matched up against some tough teams, which is going to make for a very exciting and challenging season! The Broncos are set to play all AFC West teams twice, the NFC East, and the AFC North. Additionally, they will play the number two teams from the remaining AFC divisions (East and South). The match-ups are as follows:

Home: Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders, San Diego Chargers, Cleveland Browns, Pittsburgh Steelers, New England Patriots, Dallas Cowboys, New York Giants

Away: Kansas City Chiefs, Oakland Raiders, San Diego Chargers, Baltimore Ravens, Cincinnati Bengals, Indianapolis Colts, Philadelphia Eagles, Washington Redskins

As 2008 is coming to a close, I want to thank you all for reading my blog this season and always writing such great responses. I will be sure to write many more blogs throughout the off season. The Cheerleaders continue to work in the community throughout the year, so I will keep you all posted on exciting news from our corner!

Have a safe and happy New Year. Talk to you in 2009!

This is the worst thing to happen, Firing Mike Shanahan was the worst thing to do, he brought so much class to this team, Arabia knight I feel you bro, Im disgusted by this, u guys think we gonna have a better chance with a new coach, i guess we gonna be in 3rd or 4th place, because we officially are in the rebuilding process, we officially are not a power house, when I heard the news from my bro, i couldn’t believe, he likes teasing me, I really fell like shedding some tears, Shanahan is the man who gave the man in Elway, then man I call my hero his best 2 glorious years, Mike I hope u dont kill us, if u land with another team and u will, Shanahan is coming to another team will dominate us for another 15 years like he did with the raiders, Shanny, I just dont see the Broncos without him, I will always be a broncos fan 4 life, but this is a blow to the face for me, maybe if shanahan resigned thats something I can totally bear, but Shanny believed this team can get to the big game, and I believe him, so much for the the running game, we were famous for making any back a star, thats all Shanny, thats gone 4 sure, i hope all u negative people who criticized shanny and still have the nerve call urselfs fans are happy U DISGUST ME!!!! I CANT WAIT TO HEAR U GUYS CRITIZE BOWLEN, OR SOME OTHER STUPID THING WHEN U REALIZE U WERE WRONG!!!

    Go Broncos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s always tough to see a class act like Shanahan depart but perhaps it was for the best. I don’t know. It’s not my call. I just hope that Cowher or another stud can come in and lead us to great heights. The talent is in place, so may we find the right coach!

We’ll all miss Shanahan; a new era has begun! Romi, thank you for cheering and supporting our Broncos through thick and thin. Thank you for looking so fine and representing us fans to the rest of the country. I for one appreciate your chipper attitude. Yes, there is life after Shanahan, and yes, we can, we WILL continue to be a force to be feared to the rest of the NFL.

  8. Bones1965 says:

I will say this, Mike Shanahan is a total class act. I wish him the very best.

  9. Detroit Reggie says:

Yes he is Bones1965, Pat should have let Mike retire, not fire him.

  10. West Coast says:

Thanks for the post Romi…..I wish Mike all the best but paying a 500 coach 7 million a year doesnt cut it. Looking forward to the 09 Broncos. Happy new year and please drive safe……West Coast

Good bloggin’ Romi. I expect the Team to be great next year. I hope they learned the consequences of “not getting it done”. We lost a legend. Best of luck to Coach Shanahan and the Broncos Team.
P.S. We’re going to be an EXPLOSIVE Team in ’09. You’re going to be busy on those sidelines!

  12. CABRONCOSFAN7 says:

thanks Romi, like BucknBronco said you are going to be busy on those side lines next year, and i also wish mike the very best and thank him for his time and detication to this team, thanks for the two superbowl wins too.

Thanks for all the great responses! It has certainly been an emotional week for Broncos players and fans with the news of the release of Mike Shanahan as head coach. However, after watching the press conferences of Mr. Bowlen and Mike Shanahan, I think all Broncos fans were able to find closure in the decision. Mr. Bowlen and Shanahan acted with the highest level of class and both have such a high level of respect for one another. I think we all saw how difficult of a decision this was for Mr. Bowlen, but if anyone understands his thinking, it is Mike Shanahan. I think the Broncos and Shanahan will both find great success in the future. Sometimes change is needed to inspire and enliven people. Now is the time for us to stand behind Mr. Bowlen and his decisions and keep the morale of Broncos Country high.

During his press conference, Mike Shanahan said something that has stuck with me. He said, “tough times don’t last, but tough people do.” The Denver Broncos and Mike Shanahan are as tough as they come, and as we part ways, we will all find renewed strength and passion.

I hope everyone had a safe a wonderful new year. I am very excited for 2009 and for the season ahead!

Thanks for all the great information Romi. The schedule for next year looks real tough…I think we will be good once we get the “D” toughened up.

    Hi Romi,

First let me say thank you for blogging with us this year. You are a really wonderful young woman – as I know your teammates are. I always look forward to hearing from you. Your blogs are interesting, timely, informative and you have a really educated (and mature) perspective on our team and where we are headed.

Like a lot of other fans, I was really bummed out after both the Buffalo and San Diego games. But, as you’ve pointed out to us, young teams are always a work in progress and the good news is that we can definitely expect to be an improved and more mature team next year.

I’m one who was a bit surprised by the Shanahan dismissal, but I know he will do well wherever he goes and I know there are also some outstanding candidates out there – not just from other teams but also Rick Dennison from within the organization. I was glad to see the class that both Shanihan and Bowlen showed at the press conference. No surprise there – as they are both class acts. My lasting memory of the Shanihan era was being there for our first Super Bowl victory in January, 1998 (the one I use as my handle). Nobody outside of Denver gave us much of a chance, but our win was well deserved and definitely no fluke. Looking back, I tend to agree with those folks who say the dual role of head coach and vice president is just too much for any one person to do.

Romi, I wish I had been able to meet you this year but with my double knee surgery last month it just wasn’t in the cards. So hopefully I may be able to catch up with you at one of your off season appearances – or, if not, at Fan Fare.

Thanks again for blogging with us and I wish you the very best in 2009.

    Don
