Sunday was a sad day in Broncos Country.

On a day that saw Broncos quarterback Kyle Orton throw for 476 yards on 37 of 57 passing attempts, there were not many points to show for it. The offense dominated the game outgaining the Indianapolis Colts by 150 yards, but yards do not win football games.

The Broncos made five attempts inside the 20 yard line and settled for two field goals and three turnovers.
  
The Broncos were playing with heavy hearts following the death of teammate Kenny McKinley on Monday — a tragic loss.

A moment of silence at the start of the game brought all of us back to reality. Understanding that although it is a game we love, it is still just a game.

Halftime brought some excitement into the stands when Broncos alumni player Floyd Little formally received his Hall of Fame ring from the Hall of Fame’s executive director Steve Perry. Floyd Little played for the Broncos from 1967 to 1975. Throughout Little’s professional football career, he rushed for 6,323 yards and scored 43 touchdowns. On August 17, 2010, Little was inducted into the Hall of Fame.

After halftime, the Broncos fought hard, scoring 10 points in the third quarter, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Colts.

Denver may have lost the game, but the team learned a lot.  The offensive line was able to hold two of the league’s premier pass rushers (Robert Mathis and Dwight Freeney) to one sack.  Orton’s near 500 yard performance was equally spread in a total team effort among nine different receivers. Defensively, Denver saw a glimpse of potential in a scheme that held Manning and the Colts to fewer touchdowns than expected.

The Broncos will continue to fight and grow as a team.  There will be new challenges that surface as the year progresses.  A loss defines us not as a team in distress, but simply as a team with something to gain.

Gaining over 500 yards in a game is a great building point. Going into Tennessee next week all the Broncos really need to do is turn those yards into touchdowns. I am confident that my team will be up to the challenge and will be able to pull through with a win on Sunday.
