Hi Broncos fans! Hope everyone is getting back from a wonderful and safe Labor Day weekend with friends, family, and fellow Broncos fans! I enjoyed my Broncos filled weekend with cheerleader appearances at both the Colorado State Fair in Pueblo and Taste of Colorado here in Denver.
My name is Margaret Foy and I am enjoying my second year as a Denver Broncos Cheerleader. The new opportunities this season has offered me so far have taken me across the state of Colorado to meet Broncos fans. I had the honor of representing our Denver Broncos as one of the cheerleaders on our Broncos Caravan Tour in June. Pueblo was one of our stops on the tour, I thought I had an idea of what to expect from our fans there but after the weekend at the State Fair – Man did I underestimate! The response we received in Pueblo while debuting our 2011 calendar was overwhelming! Everyone was so excited and supportive and it was a great reminder that some of our biggest fans are in Pueblo! We rode in the parade with our Junior Denver Broncos Cheerleaders and saw lots of orange and blue lining the streets of Pueblo.

Our Junior Denver Broncos Cheerleaders did a great job cheering, dancing, and getting Southern Colorado geared up for football season! When I returned to Denver for the Taste of Colorado Festival, I loved seeing so many people sporting their Broncos gear at Civic Center Park. From spending the weekend with Broncos fans I can report one thing….Broncos Country is back to football, painting the state orange and blue for the Monday night home opener!
To open the 2011 season, Denver will host the nationally televised Monday Night Football matchup against the rivaled Oakland Raiders! Notoriously, teams showcase their promising draft talent and team potential, and we know how exciting that will be in our house. Kyle Orton and our starting lineup are looking great and how rousing has Von Miller’s preseason performance been? The big game is less than a week away Broncos Country and I have to ask….are you ready for some football?!?
I did some research on just how special Monday night’s spotlight is so we can continue gearing up for football. I’m sure a lot of you know that Monday Night Football is one of the longest running and highest-rated prime time television series’ ever. But did you also know:
So this is BIG Broncos Country and we need to represent!

Now, knowing all this about the coveted Monday Night Football coverage and that Denver and Oakland have been matched up 15 times as a Monday night pairing! 15 times, Broncos fans! Obviously this is an exciting matchup, and many of these previous games were decided by seven points or less. From cheering on the sidelines last season, one thing I know that makes a huge difference in close games is the energy created within the stadium and city leading up to the game.
So Broncos Country, let’s be sure to paint the state orange and blue for MNF’s big matchup. Guys, put on your Broncos jerseys, hats, throwback T-shirts, and ties for work this week. Ladies get football ready in that awesome NFL line at Victoria’s Secret’s. Fans – get out in Denver this week to warn those Raiders fans that they will be in our house Monday night and that we are ready for some Monday Night Football! GO BRONCOS!

I finally found my proof thanks to this new Broncos historical database.
Yeah, you are right, good call:
Players must start the preseason on the PUP list. A team cannot put a player on PUP after he has participated in any practice. The player must either remain on the active roster, or be put on injured reserve. If a player begins the season on the PUP list, they are automatically not allowed to play the first six games. If they are to play that season, then they must begin practice by the ninth week or they are designated as PUP for the season.
The PUP list is basically a tool to keep NFL depth charts up to date. As long as a player is PUP they are not taking up space on the active roster.
Proof of what?
Remember, oh say probably over a year ago, we were talkingt about how the Broncos at one time accidently assigned a retired number to a player I was remembering as David Treadwell?
Yeah, recall that discussion.
I couldn’t ever find anything because it took place in the pre-season. If you go back on this detabase to the 1989 media guide page, you can pull up flip cards for the games including pre-season.
You like to build up the suspense, don’t you, LOL.
Every pre-season game that year (Rams-9ers-Cowboys-Colts) shows Treadwell wearing #18, witch we all know is retired for Tripuka. Starting with the regular season opener, he was switched to #9.
Didn’t want you to loose me if my typing ability took to long between posts.
Yeah, I just saw that, great memory you got, a monumental goof that lasted for 4 preseason games, I wonder if Tripuka gave them a call about it, LOL. Imagine next year we get a rookie QB in and assign him #7, same type of goof, well maybe not quite, but still, unbelievable. Obviously the organization was not on top of historical facts about their own history back then like they are now, hopefully, no more excuses with this historical data base, LOL.
Only 3 numbers retired:
Tripucka’s number 18
Floyd Little’s number 44
John Elway’s number 7
Feels good to be exhonorated (spl?)…just saying. I realize it took awhile.
Interesting note about that year (1989) the kicker Treadwell beat out (the only other kicker on the team) was none other than former Cowgirl Rafeal Steptien
However there has been a controversy about it namely brought on by Mr Saccomano himself:
ENGLEWOOD – The Denver Broncos acknowledged for many years that former quarterback Frank Tripucka’s No. 18 was retired, but now they’re not so sure.
The Broncos can’t find proof they retired No. 18, so the team doesn’t consider Tripucka’s number retired. Denver has issued the number for the first time in more than 30 years. Wide receiver Grant Mattos switched to No. 18 when Jerry Rice took Mattos’ No. 19.
In Denver’s 2004 media guide the team listed three retired jersey numbers: John Elway’s No. 7, Floyd Little’s No. 44 and Tripucka’s No. 18. Last year’s NFL Record and Fact Book listed those three numbers as retired by Denver. Tripucka played for Denver from 1960- 63, the team’s first four seasons.
Broncos vice president of public relations Jim Saccomano said he has searched old files, including newspaper clips, and can’t find anything that proves the number was retired.
Saccomano said the page announcing the retired numbers will be removed from this year’s media guide.
“John Elway’s number, we all know, was retired in an official ceremony,” Saccomano said, referring to a halftime ceremony during a Broncos-Miami Dolphins game Sept. 13, 1999. “We all know that. I cannot find anything that said No. 18 was retired. It has been grandfathered along as an unused number.”
Tripucka said Gerald Phipps, then partowner of the Broncos, called him shortly after Tripucka retired at the end of the 1963 season and told him No. 18 was retired. Tripucka said the decision was made by Denver Post sportswriter Bob Bowie and Broncos part- owners Phipps and Cal Kunz.
“There was no fanfare about it,” said Tripucka, whose old white Broncos jersey with the brown numerals hangs in the family room of his New Jersey home. “(Phipps) called me and that was it. I said ‘I appreciate it, it’s a great honor,’ and that’s about it.”
Tripucka was inducted into the Broncos’ Ring of Fame in 1986. He had 7,676 yards, 51 touchdown passes and 85 interceptions for Denver.
Tripucka, a Broncos fan, said he wasn’t upset his number is back in circulation.
“Who am I to judge who they should honor and what they should do?” Tripucka said. “I was honored, but what they want to do now… that was a long time ago. A lot of people don’t even know who the hell I was.”
Saccomano said until the Broncos find evidence that No. 18 was retired, they will treat it as they do other numbers that are out of circulation. That has been the case for No. 30, which has not been worn in a game since running back Terrell Davis played his final game in 2001. Former tight end Shannon Sharpe’s No. 84 was not issued last season after he retired. Rookie Wesley Duke is wearing it this offseason.
“We think of (No. 18) like No. 84 or 30, numbers that were not used as a courtesy for a long time,” Saccomano said. “I cannot say it will never be used.”
That was an article dated back in 2005, hopefully Sacco has found better things to do now…. What happened to honoring what the man said, why would he lie, and I thought Sacco was all about honoring our history… That’s right, that was before Mr Sacomano’s time, he only came in to the Broncos in the late 70s so he has no alliance to our first QB ever.
Interestingly enough that article above also missed the fact that Treadwell used the #18 too.
Thanks for the lesson and information guys. I wonder what Fox is thinking, or what the trainers/medical staff maybe suggesting? We need to have healthy depth. The Tebow thing is just what he’s been faced with all his competitive lilfe. It’s probably a good idea that we keep seeking the QB position, every team needs a good one and if we have two the better trading scenarios, etc.
What about the organization does the right thing and officially announce #18 as retired, better late than never, the Broncos motto, haha, that would only be right in my book.
Looking back, it was probably more Mr Saccomano’s way to clear himself of his goof when he didn’t alert the front office that no one should be wearing #18 since it had been retired.
I would imagine we will have a #18 blog from Mr Saccomano pretty soon…
Austin, thanks for the refreshing input to the blog today, nothing like new subjects to discuss, even if this was an old one.
BTW, the article was by Frank Schwab of the Colorado Sprigs Gazette.
My Dad went to all those original games and he would talk highly about Tripucka. I agree Bay, that would be the right thing to do, we should always honor those who came before, their decisions if owners and accomplishments as earned. That’s what keeps a proud organization and tradition alive. Owners, players, and fans of all ages can respect and appreciate that.
Yeah, no matter what age or accomplisments you’ve had in your life, there are still times when you mess up, I think Mr Saccomano and the organization need to right this wrong, and maybe it has been done since that article in 2005, but if not, it’s never too late to do the right thing.
Could I really be Mr Tripucka? LMAO!
Even Wikipedia has Tripucka’s number being retired:
American Football League
The American Football League was founded in 1960, and Tripucka’s old coach at Saskatchewan, Frank Filchock, was hired as the first coach of the new league’s Denver Broncos. He brought Tripucka with him as an assistant coach. However the Broncos also had quarterback problems, and in preseason Filchock sent Tripucka in as a player. He became their first starting quarterback in the regular season and played with the team for four seasons. He was the first U.S. pro quarterback to throw for 3,000 yards in a season. He also threw the first touchdown pass in the history of the AFL. In 1962 he was named to the AFL All Star team.
Tripucka retired in 1963 after 15 profesional seasons. The Broncos subsequently retired his uniform #18.
Waiting for official clarification from the organization, thank you.
This is a perfect subject since the historical database has just been unveiled.
I also agree Bay about the organization doing the right thing. I guess we need to start a petition. This years media guide still shows the number retired, by the way.
Didn’t Muke Bell wear #30
at one point as well? Since were on the subject?
I meant Mike Bell. Oops!
And of course, Brandon Lloyd has 84 now!
RB Santonio Beard wore #30 in the 2004 pre-season. How’s that for not letting anyone wear a players # out of respect for a long time? 3 years?
They opened up a can of worms with the historical database, LOL, I bet that was the last thing on their minds. However with the good comes the bad and they need to deal with the Tripucka thing once and for all. But it’s not really up to Bowlen to decide, it was his decision to retire Elway’s number under his clock, but not Tripucka’s, that was on the owners back then clock, Gerald Phipps and Cal Kunz, and Tripucka tells us they did so, therefore the current ownership needs to honor that, and recognize it officially once and for alll, plain and simple.
Or maybe they already went back on MR Saccomano’s words in 2005 and did officially recognize #18 as officially retired, but I think I would remember such a thing, so therfore that’s why we are now still in this gray area, transparency please.
They’ll talk about it next week I’m sure….
Hey, everybody does their best to keep me honest here, I just do it with the organization….
I don’t lick boots enough? LMAO…
Does everyone remember Elway “playing from the pocket” when he was doing the HELICOPTER to win his first SuperBowl……?
Elway rushed 59 times for 243 yards in 1997 and those totals include his 5 rushing attempts for 17 yards and 1 TD and 1 HELICOPTER in his first SuperBowl victory……
“we must win from the pocket” is just not realistic or true.
I believe that Tebow can win more games (in and out of the pocket) than the other two QB’s on the team…..jomho
ILMSDB!!!
Do you have Elway’s phone #? LOL.
“we must win from the pocket” is just not realistic or true.
Considering our glory years were built on roll outs and boot legs. I find it ironic, it is now the conventional wisdom, this whole pocket passing only.
i was in such a good mood. why oh why did I look at the 2006 season.
new blog
2006, the year Mike Shanahan let his ego matter more than winning.
just read that article on the DP you posted that on OC. I agree 100%.
It may just be another writer looking to stir the pot, but the fact of them recruiting QB’s is still there. So, here is how I see this so called three year plan.
You play the Tebow dog and pony show, never selling out and giving him a true chance to mold into a QB1. Tell him, “sorry kid, it’s not you, it’s us.” The whole while playing a QB that looks at the NFL as a day job (#8). Hoping you don’t need to bring in the guy who folds under pressure like a Murphy bed(#9). Build the run game to a respectable level, have an awesome defense that scares the beegeebus out of the opposing offense.
Oh, that three year plan worked so well for Jacksonville.
Here is my dillenma (sp) As usual I bet almosr-t all my money on the Broncos -2 1/2 $550. Now it turns out I have the only perfect ticket in one of those contests with Oak winning. It’s a $30,000 ticket but I only get $1,500 and a seperate $6,000 to pay income tax on it . If the Broncos win by either 1 or two I get nothing,. Oak wins I have$7,500 in cash (but I have to face the IRS next April, I kind of just want the Broncos to win by 3 or more I get about oh no I just looked it up somehow my ticketis $850 to win $772.75. for a ticket of $1622.75 as long as Broncos win by 3 or more Go Broncos!!!
But Broncos please don’t win by one or two points.Go Broncos!!!
