AP All-Pro Trio

January 14th, 2010 - 9:56am by Zach EisendrathOther posts by

After standout seasons at their respective positions, three Broncos were named to the 2009 AP NFL All-Pro Team on Thursday.

First-time Pro Bowl selections Ryan Clady and Elvis Dumervil were named to the AP All-Pro First Team, while teammate Brian Dawkins, who earned his eighth Pro Bowl nod in 2009, was named a second-team All-Pro selection.

“It’s always nice to see your players receive national recognition for their play,” Head Coach Josh McDaniels said. “Ryan, Elvis and Brian are a big part of our football team and certainly proved this past season that they are among the league’s best at their respective positions. I’m happy for them. Defensively, few players in the NFL made as much of an impact as Elvis did, and Brian brought such an attitude to our locker room while continuing to play at the highest level. For Ryan to be named a first-team All-Pro at such a young age is a rare thing for a tackle and speaks volumes for his play.”

Clady, who was named a second-team AP All-Pro as a rookie in 2008, becomes only the fifth offensive linemen since the 1970 merger to be named to the AP All-Pro First Team by his second season in the league.

The other four offensive linemen to accomplish that feat were Anthony Munoz (Cincinnati) in 1981, Willie Roaf (New Orleans) in 1994, Jonathan Ogden (Baltimore) in 1997 and Jammal Brown (New Orleans) in 2006. No tackle has ever received first-team AP All-Pro honors as a rookie.

Broncos vs. Chiefs: Second Half Live Blog

Q3 14:55: Prater opens the second half by sending his kickoff attempt to the 4-yard line. Lawrence receives the ball and rushes to the left for a gain of 16-yards before a nice tackle by Matthew Willis.

Q3 14:00: On first down, Andra Davis cuts through the offensive line and takes down Charles for a 20-yard loss. On second down, Lawrence takes the ball on an end around and gains 26-yards on the reverse play, bringing the ball out to the Kansas City 45-yard line.

Q3 13:03: A quick pass to Chambers results in a 5-yard gain out to midfield. On the next play, Charles picks up 5-yards and a Chiefs first down at the Denver 45-yard line.

Q3 12:20: On first down in Denver territory, D.J. Williams sniffs out a carry by Charles and brings the ball carriers down 2-yards behind the line of scrimmage. On the next play, Charles gets the carry again and rumbles to his left for a gain of 15-yards. Ayers was called for a 15-yard personal foul on the tackle, bringing the ball to the Denver 16-yard line.

COIN TOSS: Kansas City called heads, however, coin fell to tails. The Broncos won the toss and elected to receive the opening kickoff.

PLAYOFF UPDATE: The AFC Wild Card picture is starting to clear up. The Texans just pulled out a 34-27 come-from-behind victory over New England, meaning a Broncos win combined with a Baltimore loss or New York Jets loss means Denver would clinch a playoff berth. But that is just one scenario that would earn the Broncos a spot in the postseason.

Q1 13:10: Moreno came up short on 3rd-and-1 and Berger is back to punt the ball away for the Broncos. Bobby Wade signaled for a fair catch on the return. The Chiefs were called for a holding penalty on the play and will start at their own 14. By the way, it has started to lightly snow at INVESCO Field at Mile High.

Q1 15:00: Correll Buckhalter downed Ryan Succop’s kickoff in the end zone and the Broncos will start at the 20.

Willis Moved to Active Roster

January 2nd, 2010 - 12:44pm by Zach EisendrathOther posts by

On Saturday, the Broncos moved wide receiver Matthew Willis from their practice squad to the club’s 53-man active roster. To make room for Willis on the active roster, the team waived tackle Herb Taylor.

A second-year receiver out of UCLA, Willis joined the Broncos as a practice-squad signee on Dec. 24, 2008. He spent the final week of the 2008 season on Denver’s practice squad after a brief stint on Baltimore’s practice squad early in the year.

As a rookie in 2007, the 6-foot, 190-pound wideout saw time in five of the Ravens’ final seven games, totaling one tackle on special teams along with an 11-yard reception. Willis played two seasons of football at UCLA after competing on its track team and finished his Bruins career with 24 receptions for 248 yards with three touchdowns in 21 games.

Do-Your-Job Mentality

December 31st, 2009 - 3:53pm by Zach EisendrathOther posts by

In Head Coach Josh McDaniels’ first season at the helm of the Broncos, he has instilled a simple, yet focused motto upon his team: “Do your job.”

In every phase of the game, McDaniels asks players to handle their specific assignments to the best of their ability — and let their teammates take care of their respective roles, too.

Come this Sunday, the Broncos plan on bringing that same “do-your-job” attitude to their Week 17 matchup with AFC West rival Kansas City. There are 10 different scenarios that could play out on Sunday that would propel the Broncos into the playoffs. But the team fully realizes it needs to take care of business against its opponent at INVESCO Field at Mile High, the Chiefs, instead of worrying about how the six other teams fighting for an AFC Wild Card berth are performing on Sunday.

“I just hope we’re focused on (our) game,” McDaniels said. “I know there are a lot of other factors that are at play, and there are so many different scenarios that if you’re sitting there trying to calculate all those you might miss the first quarter. I think we should just focus on the Chiefs, get ready to play and go out there and coach and play as hard as we can on Sunday, and then whatever happens, whatever they tell us to do on Monday morning, that’s what we’re going to do. We’ll see how it all unfolds.”

Taylor Added to Active Roster

December 29th, 2009 - 4:20pm by Zach EisendrathOther posts by

With Russ Hochstein placed on injured reserve after suffering a knee injury against Philadelphia, tackle Herb Taylor has been added to the team’s 53-man active roster to provide the Broncos with depth on the offensive line.

Taylor was originally signed on Dec. 9 after Ryan Harris was placed on IR with a toe injury. He was waived by the club on Dec. 19 after Tony Carter was signed to the active roster.

Taylor was inactive for Week 14 against the Colts.

Hochstein and Kenny McKinley, who also suffered a knee injury against the Eagles, were officially placed on IR by the club on Tuesday. For more information, click here.

Hopeful for Hill’s Return

December 24th, 2009 - 3:38pm by Zach EisendrathOther posts by

On Monday, Head Coach Josh McDaniels said he was “hopeful” Renaldo Hill would be active for Week 16′s matchup with the Eagles.

Hill sat out last Sunday’s game against Oakland with an ankle injury and was a limited participant in practice on both Wednesday and Thursday.

McDaniels would like to have the ninth-year safety available against Philadelphia — and every week for that matter. Not just because of what he bring to the defense, but his value to the team as a whole.

“He is maybe as intelligent of a player as I’ve ever been around, and I’ve been around some smart ones,” McDaniels said. “This guy is very in tune with the entire game plan.”

Broncos Add Batiste to Practice Squad

December 23rd, 2009 - 9:19am by Zach EisendrathOther posts by

The Broncos on Wednesday signed fourth-year tackle D’Anthony Batiste to their practice squad. The spot became available when Tony Carter was moved to the 53-man active roster on Saturday.

Batiste has played in 12 games during his pro tenure, including eight outings this season with the Redskins.

The 6-foot-4, 314-pound tackle started the 2009 season with Washington and was inactive for the first four games before replacing Chris Samuels in the team’s game at Carolina during Week 5. He saw action in the team’s next seven contests before being waived on Dec. 15.

Batiste, a four-year letterman at Louisiana-Lafayette, entered the NFL in 2006 as a college free agent with Dallas. He has started four games on the pro circuit.
