A Crop Of New Players

May 1st, 2012 - 9:42am by mike_riceOther posts by

What a weekend. The draft is now history. Some thoughts on the big weekend.

1) LET’S ALL BE HONEST ENOUGH TO SAY WE REALLY DON’T KNOW HOW WELL THE BRONCOS DRAFTED. With the plethora of opinions and evaluations, we like to think we know how well they did. The fact is, however, we don’t know how good it is. We don’t know how any team did.

I know that sounds like any easy out but for me, it is the absolute truth. It simply takes time to find out how well a team drafted.

In the lead-up to the draft, we hear and read analysts talk and write about certain players. Thus, we tend to think those are the best players. Then, we hope that the team we root for drafts some of those players. The fact is, there are a lot of really good players available. Many of them we haven’t heard of or seen play. And virtually none of us have ever broken down film on them.

The NFL Draft is upon us.

Thank goodness.

By now, all the talk and speculation are wearing a bit thin. Despite that, I will take a final look at a couple of positions and offer some thoughts about what the Broncos might do or should do.

In case you have not seen them, please be sure to check out the great draft previews that my colleagues here are DenverBroncos.com have put together. They recently looked at quarterbacks and defensive backs.

We are getting closer to the draft. I love it.

What will the Broncos do? Will they trade out of the first round? Will they stay put or even try to move up?

The closer we get, the more excited I get.

My colleagues at DenverBroncos.com continue to do an excellent job previewing some of the top players at each position and I encourage you to check out those draft previews if you haven’t done so already.

DEFENSIVE LINE

Like many people, I really thought the Broncos would draft a defensive lineman last year. I think the same thing in 2012. It gets interesting when one thinks about when the Broncos might address this position.

Rice Takes: Getting One of the Greats

March 23rd, 2012 - 7:33am by mike_riceOther posts by

The Broncos are the center of attention in the NFL right now.

In the span of two days, they signed a Super Bowl champion and 4-time MVP quarterback and traded a young quarterback whose popularity easily outpaces his productivity.

What a start to the offseason.

Rice Takes: Bring on the Offseason

March 8th, 2012 - 3:22pm by mike_riceOther posts by

The glow of the playoff win over the Steelers has now faded. While the impact of that win has not decreased, it is time for the Broncos to turn the page to the 2012 season.

Free agency will begin soon. It won’t be long before the draft is here. The Broncos have plenty of decisions to make as they look to improve their roster.

This week, my colleagues at DenverBroncos.com are starting a series of previews on the top prospects at each position. They’ll break down many of the players who will be available in the NFL draft

2011 Season Rewind

February 20th, 2012 - 4:11pm by mike_riceOther posts by

The 2011 season was hardly as conventional as the Broncos’ 8-8 record might indicate. It was a season of ups and downs. It was a season during which the unexpected became the routine. And it was a season that leaves fans eager for 2012.

Through all of the drama, the Broncos definitely took steps forward in their efforts to build a championship contender. No doubt, it is a process. The Broncos are one step farther along in that process.

Several things stand out from the Broncos’ 2011 season.

Rice: Super Bowl XLVI Preview

SUPER BOWL XLVI
NEW YORK GIANTS vs. NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

What a matchup this figures to be.

The Patriots stormed their way to a 13-3 record and the top seed in the AFC.

The Giants caught fire at the end of the season and defeated the top two teams on the road in the playoffs.

The memory of the Giants’ 17-14 win over the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII is still fresh. That defeat spoiled New England’s bid for the second undefeated season in NFL history.

This most recent Giants-Patriots matchup is as compelling as the one four years ago.

Rice: Championship Weekend Preview

AFC CHAMPIONSHIP

BALTIMORE RAVENS @ NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS

I’m trying to think how the Ravens will be able to beat the Patriots in Foxborough. Barring at least one significant injury, I can’t.

The Patriots are simply too hungry, too powerful and too good.

In 17 games this season, the Patriots have scored 30 points or more 13 times, including eight times in the last nine games. Gulp.

The Underdogs

January 13th, 2012 - 7:50am by mike_riceOther posts by

The Denver Broncos are right where they want to be. They are in the playoffs but still not picked to do too much.

“We love being underdogs,” linebacker Joe Mays said on Tuesday. “There’s no pressure. We just get going and play our style of football and just try to prove everybody wrong like we’ve been doing all year.”

I can’t imagine there are too many people outside of the Rocky Mountain region that are seriously going to pick the Broncos to defeat the Patriots. There are likely quite a few people in the region that will take the Patriots, even though those people might very well being pulling for the Broncos to spring an upset.
