New Overtime Rules Go Into Effect

January 8th, 2012 - 6:06pm by Kenny LeganOther posts by

With the Broncos-Steelers game going into overtime, the new overtime rules come into effect for the first time this season.

In the past, the first team to score would win, regardless of when that was (first possession, second possession, etc).

However, this time, there are only two ways a team can end the game on the first possession. If the offensive team scores a touchdown or if the defending team returns a turnover for a touchdown or forces a safety, the game is over.

But if the offensive team scores a field goal, the other team will have a chance to get the ball. If they go on to score a touchdown, the game will be over. If they score a field goal, it will go into sudden death.

These new rules went into effect at the start of last postseason and were not applicable during the regular season.

Steelers Tie the Game

With 3:48 to go in the fourth quarter, the Pittsburgh Steelers have just tied the game at 23 on a 31-yard touchdown pass from Ben Roethlisberger to Jerricho Cotchery.

The Steelers got the ball back after a Willis McGahee fumble at the Steelers 45-yard line stopped what appeared to be a promising Broncos drive. From there, the Steelers took seven plays to go 55 yards for the tying score.

The Broncos offense now takes over at its own 15-yard line following a 19-yard kick return by Matthew Willis.

Steelers Answer With Field Goal

January 8th, 2012 - 5:30pm by Kenny LeganOther posts by

After the Broncos went back up by 10, it didn’t take the Steelers long to respond.

Shaun Suisham added his third field goal of the game on a 37-yard kick that cut the deficit again to seven points with 9:59 left in the fourth quarter.

The Steelers used two big plays to quickly get into field-goal range. Roethlisberger hit Antonio Brown for 20 yards across the middle of the first play of the drive, then two plays later, Redman busted a 28-yard run up the middle to get the ball down to the Broncos 23-yard line.

But the defense held firm again with their backs to the wall, stopping the Steelers and allowing just the field goal. The Broncos will start out on their own 20-yard line following the TV timeout.

Broncos Make it Two-Possession Game

January 8th, 2012 - 5:21pm by Kenny LeganOther posts by

The Broncos have answered the Steelers touchdown drive.

With 13:10 left in the fourth quarter, Matt Prater connected on a 35-yard field goal to give Denver a 10-point lead, 23-13. It’s Prater’s third field goal of the contest.

The score capped a methodical 12-play, 41-yard drive that ate up 6:19 of clock.

The Broncos got all the way down to the Steelers 10-yard line but a wide receiver screen pass to Eddie Royal that would’ve given the Broncos a first down at the 3-yard line was wiped out on a holding call.

The key play for the Broncos came a few plays earlier, on third-and-5, when Tebow found running back Lance Ball on an short sideline route for the first down. In an area where they’ve struggled all year, the Broncos are 6-for-13 on third down in this game, which has helped them sustain drives.

The Steelers start on their own 20-yard line following the touchback.

Steelers Cut Deficit in Half

January 8th, 2012 - 5:03pm by Kenny LeganOther posts by

The Steelers have found the end zone for the first time today, on a 1-yard touchdown reverse run by receiver Mike Wallace to bring Pittsburgh within one touchdown. The Broncos now lead 20-13 with 4:29 left in the third quarter.

Wallace’s run capped an 11-play, 92-yard drive for the Steelers that took 5:56 off the game-clock. Pittsburgh moved methodically down the field, although at one point it appeared as if the Broncos recovered a backwards pass. However, the play was ruled to be not reviewable and the drive continued.

The Broncos had a chance to stop the Steelers, but on third-and-2 from the Broncos 33-yard line, Issac Redman burst up the middle and ran all the way down to the one-yard line to set up Wallace’s score on the next play.

The Broncos offense will take over on its own 20-yard line following the touchback.

Prater Pads Lead

January 8th, 2012 - 4:15pm by Kenny LeganOther posts by

Matt Prater has added his second field goal of the quarter, a 28-yarder to give the Broncos a 20-6 lead with 1:05 left in the first half.

The Broncos got the ball back after the Steelers managed just one first down their previous drive and took advantage almost immediately. On the second play of the drive, Tebow scrambled left and found tight end Daniel Fells open over the middle for a 40-yard gain down to the Steelers 25-yard line. The offense managed another first down but stalled as they neared the goal line, giving Prater the opportunity to kick his second field goal of the game.

Tebow now is 5-for-11 for 185 yards and one touchdown. Demaryius Thomas is the Broncos leading receiver, catching two passes for 109 yards.

Broncos Get Field Goal Following Interception

Make that 17 points unanswered for the Broncos.

After Tebow’s rushing touchdown, the Steelers took over on their own 20-yard line. However, after a 9-yard sack by defensive end Robert Ayers on second-and-7, Roethlisberger threw an interception over the middle to safety Quinton Carter, who returned it nine yards to the Steelers 18 yard-line.

From there, the offense drove all the way to the 2-yard line with help from a roughing-the-passer penalty on James Harrison, but on third-and-goal, Tebow rolled left and his pass to Matthew Willis at the front pylon was broken up.

Kicker Matt Prater came up and split the uprights with a 20-yard field goal attempt to give Denver a 17-6 lead with 7:33 left in the second quarter.

Tebow’s Touchdown Extends Lead

January 8th, 2012 - 3:48pm by Kenny LeganOther posts by

All season long, the second quarter has been the Broncos Achilles heal.

So far, that’s not the case today.

Tebow’s 8-yard rushing touchdown on a quarterback draw up the middle gave Denver its second touchdown of the quarter and a 14-6 lead with 10:36 left in the half.

Once again, the big play on the drive came on a pass from Tebow to Demaryius Thomas, this one for 58 yards. On second-and-7 from his own 30-yard line, Tebow dropped back, but stayed in the pocket this time and found an open Thomas down the middle, as the receiver made the catch and made a twisting, long run after the catch all the way down to the Steelers 12-yard line to put the Broncos in scoring position.

Broncos Take the Lead

January 8th, 2012 - 3:34pm by Kenny LeganOther posts by

After the Broncos defense held Pittsburgh to two field goals, the offense came alive on its most recent drive as Denver took a 7-6 lead on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Tim Tebow to Eddie Royal with 13:24 left in the second quarter.

The pass came on second-and-9, when Tebow dropped back and threw a ball to the right corner in the back of the end zone. Royal made the catch as he was falling near the sideline with the defender draped over him, and was able to get down in-bounds for the score.

However, the biggest play of the drive came two plays earlier. On third-and-12 from his own 18-yard line, Tebow dropped back, scrambled to his left and launched a pass deep down the left sideline for Demaryius Thomas. The second-year receiver got behind the defense and caught it in stride for a 51-yard gain.

But the scoring drive wasn’t without cost. The Broncos lost receiver Eric Decker for the game with a left knee injury, after he was hit by James Harrison while trying to catch a pass.

The Steelers take over on their own 20-yard line after a touchback.

Steelers Tack on Another Field Goal

January 8th, 2012 - 3:18pm by Kenny LeganOther posts by

The Broncos defense have once again displayed its bend-but-don’t-break attitude.

After the Steelers converted two third downs on a drive that started at its own 33-yard line, they couldn’t advance once they entered the red zone. Suisham came on to tack on a 38-yard field goal and extend Pittsburgh’s lead to 6-0 with 27 seconds left in the first quarter.

The Steelers big play on the drive came on a 13-yard run on third-and-1 from running back Issac Redman that brought them down to the Broncos 21-yard line. However, one run and two incomplete passes later, Pittsburgh found themselves with fourth-and-9 and brought on the field goal unit.

Denver will start the second quarter with the ball on its own 18-yard line after McGahee rushed for -2 yards on first down to end the opening quarter.
