Tebow Exemplifies ‘Never Say Never’

January 10th, 2011 - 3:29pm by Gabe HiattOther posts by

Tim Tebow’s performance in his second start as a pro has earned him even more attention.

Tebow won the awards for Pepsi Rookie of the Week and GMC Never Say Never Moment of the Week in Week 16 after leading the Broncos to a one-point win against the Texans.

Now that performance has earned him a place in the running for GMC Never Say Never Moment of the Year.

Denver trailed 17-0 at halftime, but Tebow accounted for two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to help lead his team to 24-23 victory. The quarterback completed 16-of-29 passes for 308 yards with one touchdown and one interception — good for a passer rating of 89.4 — and had 10 carries for 27 yards and one rushing TD.

He threw for the most yards by a Broncos rookie quarterback since John Elway passed for 345 yards against the Baltimore Colts in 1983. Frank Tripucka is the only other quarterback in franchise history to bring the Broncos back from that large of a halftime deficit (he did it twice — in 1960 and ’62).

Tebow’s 308 passing yards also tied for the most by a rookie signal-caller this season.

Team photographer Eric Lars Bakke has been working with the Broncos for 26 years. His photography blog will serve as a unique look from the perspective of an NFL photographer, periodically updating the site with tales from the sidelines, some of his favorite photos and the stories behind them.

Gosh, it was like old times.

His voice filled the air. His enthusiasm was phenomenal. Every eye was glued to the podium as No. 7 spoke his every word. January 5, 2011, was virtually John Elway Day.

KICKOFF: Eric Decker is back to receive from Nate Kaeding. He runs up the middle and returns the kick to the 23-yard line.

Q3 14:54: Knowshon Moreno opens the half with a 35-yard run to the San Diego 42-yard line. Lance Ball is stopped for a 1-yard loss on the next play, and Tim Tebow drops back to pass on second down. The quarterback fires a pass intended for Demaryius Thomas, but Quentin Jammer steps in front of it for an interception and a 5-yard return to the San Diego 29-yard line.

COIN TOSS: The team captains are at midfield, and the Broncos have lost the toss. The Chargers have elected to receive.

Q1 15:00: Darren Sproles is deep to return the kick from Steven Hauschka and the ball bounces out of his hands. Teammates Curtis Brinkley returned it 29 yards to the San Diego 37-yard line. Denver’s defense has taken the field. Justin Bannan, Jamal Williams and Kevin Vickerson are starting on the defensive line. Jason Hunter, Wesley Woodyard, D.J. Williams and Mario Haggan are starting at linebacker, and Perrish Cox, Renaldo Hill, Brian Dawkins and Andre’ Goodman make up the starting secondary.

Q1 14:52: Ryan Matthews got the call on San Diego’s first three plays, running for 9 yards, 2 yards and then no gain. On second-and-10 from the San Diego 48-yard line, Andre’ Goodman stops Matthews for no gain again. Facing third-and-long, Philip Rivers takes the shotgun snap and Brian Dawkins rushes into the backfield for a 7-yard sack. Mike Scifres punts deep to Eddie Royal, who makes a block as the ball rolls into the end zone for a touchback.

On the Job Training

December 31st, 2010 - 2:30pm by Gabe HiattOther posts by

The curtain of snow that fell on Dove Valley on Friday could not dampen Interim Head Coach Eric Studesville’s smile.

Winter weather influenced Studesville to move the day’s practice indoors, but that was just another curve ball he’s dealt with since he took over the team less than a month ago.

In a press conference before the last Friday practice of the 2010 regular season, Studesville stood at the podium fielding questions with an ear-to-ear grin on his face. He took the opportunity to reflect on a whirlwind December in which President and CEO Pat Bowlen tabbed him to lead the team.

“There are so many things that I have learned and so many experiences that I have had in the last four weeks,” Studesville said.

Bakke: 20 for 2010

For all of us, the year 2010 will go down as a memorable one for certain. We all had our joys and our sorrows; our struggles and our accomplishments.

And for Denver Bronco fans the year didn’t turn out as they had hoped or envisioned. The season is nearing an end and yet there is promise. Remember, there will be a tomorrow and there DEFINITELY will be more orange and blue sunsets.

As we close out this calendar year, I would like to share some of my favorite moments from the sidelines around the NFL following the team.

Tale of the Tape

December 29th, 2010 - 3:47pm by Gabe HiattOther posts by

Tim Tebow attracts a crowd wherever he goes.

Whether he’s in Arizona — where the away crowd chanted his name even though he spent the game on the sidelines holding a clipboard — or at INVESCO Field at Mile High, you can bet the eyes of thousands are trained on the rookie quarterback.

With two NFL starts under his belt, Tebow will have another group of observers leading up to this weekend’s home game against the Chargers. San Diego’s coaching staff will devote a fair share of their week dissecting game tape of Tebow as they develop their game plan.

“I think we have an advantage over what Houston had,” Chargers Head Coach Norv Turner said in a Wednesday conference call.

Leonard Added to Active Roster

December 29th, 2010 - 9:39am by Gabe HiattOther posts by

With one game left on the schedule, Denver’s roster is still evolving.

The club placed linebacker Lee Robinson on injured reserve and signed defensive lineman Louis Leonard to the active roster to take his place.

Leonard is a fourth-year player who appeared in one game for the Patriots and two games for the Panthers this year, notching two tackles for Carolina. He also appeared in two games for Carolina last season, posting 11 tackles and a sack before being placed on injured reserve with an ankle injury.

He will wear No. 94 for the Broncos.
