Day 17 Blog

August 16th, 2009 - 6:09pm by Kyle SonnemanOther posts by

The team returned to the practice field on Sunday for the first time since Friday’s 17-16 loss in San Francisco. Players sported shells but no pads and the practice was more of a walkthrough, although several drills were done at full speed.

ROLL CALL: Sunday also marked the return of Brian Dawkins and Brandon Marshall. Dawkins returned to the field wearing an orange jersey and a wrap on his right hand.

“I’m used to it,” the safety said of the wrap. “I’ve done it before in my career. I’ve had to play with it for a wrist way back in the day. So I’m pretty used to it.”

Marshall saw extensive action at wide receiver, making several catches that fans have become accustomed to seeing.

Day 7: A.M. Blog

August 6th, 2009 - 1:38pm by Kyle SonnemanOther posts by

In preparation for tonight’s practice at INVESCO Field at Mile High, the Broncos held a light workout Thursday morning. Most players wore just their jerseys and shorts while the rookies and some selected veteran wore padded pants and their jerseys.

ROLL CALL: The only players not on field this morning were Rulon Davis, Brian Dawkins and Brandon Marshall. Nic Clemons returned to the field sporting an orange jersey.

POSITIONING: With Dawkins out, David Bruton took the majority of first team reps. The rest of the offense and defense stayed pretty much the same as previous days.

Day 6: P.M. Blog

August 5th, 2009 - 9:01pm by Kyle SonnemanOther posts by

After a warm afternoon, dark clouds and a cool stiff breeze welcomed the players for the afternoon session. And while the weather may have thrown the guys for a loop, it was noting like the surprise the rookies had coming after stretch.

ROLL CALL: Brandon Stokley, Daniel Graham and Correll Buckhalter returned to practice this afternoon after sitting out the AM session. Those not on the field this evening included Brandon Marshall, Brian Dawkins, Nic Clemons, Ryan Torain and Rulon Davis.

A Sad Day…

July 5th, 2009 - 1:53am by Kyle SonnemanOther posts by

Since I heard the news of the tragic passing of Steve McNair, my mind has been racing and, like many, has been filled with sadness.

Back in 1999, I was a wide-eyed college junior who lucked out and landed an internship with the Titans Radio Network. Through hard work and a lot of luck, I was able to stick around the organization – in several different capacities – for six more seasons. Over that time I got to know Steve very well on and off the field.

On the field he was a warrior. Whatever you read about him and his toughness will never accurately portray how tough he truly was. There are countless stories of him overcoming severe injuries or not practicing almost an entire season, but playing at an MVP level on game day. I can vividly remember him coming off the bench in Pittsburgh, throwing the game-winning touchdown and then get carried onto the team plane because he was in so much pain.

Not only was Steve impressive on the field, but off of it as well. In 2005, when Hurricane Katrina ravaged the gulf coast, he orchestrated a drive to send desperately needed goods down to his home state of Mississippi. What started as three to four tractor trailers turned into a convoy of almost 20 semis full of supplies headed down to the region. But most of the time, Steve would do things for the community that no one knew about and that is the way that he wanted it. He did those things because he wanted too, not for the attention that would come of it.

Thankfully I got to spend a few minutes with him in 2006 when the Ravens came to Denver. Before the game, he gave me a hard time (as he did to most of us that worked with him) about the awful weather that night. Then after the game, despite the fact that the Ravens lost, he still made time to come over and say goodbye and tell me how happy he was for me to be in Denver.

He was a true warrior, an unbelievable person and I am truly honored that I was fortunate enough to spend seven years working with him. My thoughts and prayers go out to the entire McNair family along with the Titans and Ravens organizations.

Thanks for allowing me a couple of minutes to share my feelings.

Passing Camp News

May 26th, 2009 - 12:51pm by Kyle SonnemanOther posts by

The team’s first two mini-camps are behind them, and now there’s only one more stretch of camps before a long break, then training camp.

Starting today the team is taking part in an 11-day passing camp. The camp will be held from May 26-29, June 2-5 and 8-10. During that stretch, there will be three completely open practices, where we will bring you pictures from the sessions, Broncos TV packages and blog notebooks from practice. Those dates are Thursday, May 28; Wednesday, June 3; and Monday, June 8. Also on those days Head Coach Josh McDaniels will speak to the media coming off the practice field.

DenverBroncos.com will have stories posted up every day after practice, as typically two players per day will step to the podium in the media room. We will have video, audio and stories from their press conferences.

Sunday’s Practice Recap

May 3rd, 2009 - 3:12pm by Kyle SonnemanOther posts by

The Broncos concluded their three-day mini camp Sunday afternoon. Here are some quick hits from today’s practice.

SPIRITED COMPETITION: Even though there was no contact during mini camp, there was some spirited back and forth between the offense and defense. Most of the talk was between Wesley Woodyard and Daniel Graham, with some Darrell Reid thrown in as well. All of it was in good fun, but you could tell the competition was fierce even in early May.

TWO MINUTES: After several spirited 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 drills, the team concluded practice with an 11-on-11 two-minute drill. Kyle Orton was five-of-six on his two-minute drive, completing three consecutive passes to Brandon Stokley before hitting Eddie Royal to set up a Matt Prater field goal. Chris Simms was up next, he was four-of-seven and completed two big passes to rookie Nate Swift to set up another Prater field goal.

An Answer to Your Questions

March 20th, 2009 - 11:00am by Kyle SonnemanOther posts by

After reading the comments on the blogs and message boards, many of you have wondered why we haven’t been talking and writing more about the current situation between Jay Cutler and the team. Trust me, it is not because we don’t care or want to pretend that nothing is going on, nor are we hiding anything from you. The issue is being handled internally by the organization.

Here is the thing, there is no new news on the situation. All that is out there are rumors, speculation and opinions. If we were to report on all of that, we would lose sight of what we do — cover the Denver Broncos. Not just a player or one event, but the whole team. When there is official news, rest assured that we will have it up as soon as possible. In fact, Coach McDaniels will be addressing the press at the Owners Meetings on Tuesday. We will bring you what he says on this subject and others.

The ultimate goal for those of us that want the best for the team is that this situation gets resolved sooner than later. But that will only happen through internal discussion not through rumors and speculation.

Feel free to continue to share your thoughts and opinions — there has been some great debate and discussion. Just keep in mind that we have a Code of Conduct that must be followed when you comment.

Thanks for giving me a couple of seconds to explain our end of this.

NFL Scouting Combine: Day 4

February 22nd, 2009 - 8:47am by Kyle SonnemanOther posts by

9:47 a.m. EST: Day four is kicking off quickly – just as we are getting settled in, LSU’s Ricky Jean-Francois hit the podium.

Yesterday in this space we talked about the warm front that had blown through the greater Indianapolis area. Well that ended quickly, our walk this morning may have been the coldest of the week. The cream cheese we put on our Einstein’s Bagels quickly froze and became like ice cream. Making matters worse, the Lucas Oil security staff informed us that we were no longer allowed to bring in outside food. We quickly scarfed it down and are now ready for the final day of the combine — well for us anyway.

Today the defensive backs make their way through the media room and the quarterbacks, running backs and wide receivers go through their on-the-field workouts. Follow the links below for the NFL Network schedule and the participants results.

NFL Scouting Combine: Day 3

February 21st, 2009 - 8:25am by Kyle SonnemanOther posts by

9:23 a.m. EST: Good morning and happy Saturday to you all. It seems as though a bit of a warm front has blown through the greater Indianapolis area, as frost bite didn’t kick in until just before we approached the stadium.

Anticipation is filling the air as the defensive linemen and linebackers will make their way to the Lucas Oil media room. Hopefully they will start filing in within the hour.

As we have the last couple of days, we will try to bring you the sites and sounds from the media room. But if you have any specific questions, please feel free to fire them and we will do our best to get them answered.

Also, the workouts will start revving up today. For the latest results and the NFL Network broadcast schedule, click on the links at the bottom of this blog.
