A Pair of Pro Bowlers

December 16th, 2008 - 3:11pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

In just their third year in the NFL, Jay Cutler and Brandon Marshall have made their mark upon the league.

Cutler and Marshall will represent the Denver Broncos in the Pro Bowl.

It began with fan voters who made them two of the top vote getters, and now it is official after players and coaches around the league have voted.

It marks the first time for both players at the annual all-star game, which will be played on Sunday, Feb. 8, at Aloha Stadium in Honolulu at 2:30 p.m. MST and will be televised by NBC.

Staying Focused

December 11th, 2008 - 5:03pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

With a three-game lead in the AFC West and just three games to go, you might think it’d be hard to stay on task and keep yourself from looking ahead to the playoffs.

Thinking that would be a mistake.

“The job’s not done yet,” Brandon Marshall said in his press conference today. “It’s really easy for us to stay focused. We need one more win to get in. We’re not worried about San Diego losing — we’re trying to control our own destiny.”

They’ll get their shot at that one win and control of their own destiny Sunday in Carolina.

“It seems like when our back is against the wall we play better. I think this game is going to show us where we are at as a team. The Panthers are a Super Bowl caliber team, they have great coaches, great players and they are doing a great job. It is going to be an exciting atmosphere to play in.”

Fan Results Are In…

December 11th, 2008 - 1:10pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

Fan voting has concluded for the Pro Bowl, and citizens of Broncos Country have made their voices heard.

Brandon Marshall ranks No. 1 in vote getters for AFC wide receivers, and Champ Bailey also ranks No. 1 in the AFC at cornerback.

Marshall received 416,791 votes, good for the third-highest leading total in the AFC, while Bailey got 283,155.

The results announced today are just the top overall vote getters in the AFC and NFC as well as the top vote getters for each position. In other words, we don’t know where other Broncos rank in the big scheme of things — this doesn’t mean that Bailey and Marshall are the only two Broncos with a shot at making the trip to Hawaii.

Also, players and coaches have yet to cast their votes for the Pro Bowl, which will be played on February 8, 2009.

The full AFC and NFC Pro Bowl teams will be announced next Tuesday, December 16.

Putzier Back in Denver

December 10th, 2008 - 10:50am by Adam ZinserOther posts by

It’s only Wednesday, but it’s already been a busy week for the Broncos, personnel-wise. After all the transactions Tuesday, more have taken place this morning.

The Broncos have signed tight end Jeb Putzier, Head Coach Mike Shanahan has announced. To make room for him on the roster, the team waived safety Herana-Daze Jones.

Putzier began his NFL career in Denver in 2002 and stayed with the Broncos until 2005. He spent the following two season with the Texans before joining the Seahawks in 2008. He saw action in six games for Seattle before being waived.

In 67 career games, Putzier has totaled 96 receptions for 1,251 yards with three touchdowns. He also has appeared in three career postseason games, posting 10 receptions for 159 yards with one touchdown.

The tight end will wear No. 87 for the Broncos.

The team also signed running back Steve Baylark to the practice squad. A second-year player out of the University of Massachusetts, Baylark has yet to see action in any regular season games, though he has played against the Broncos twice in the preseason with the Arizona Cardinals.

At UMass, Baylark became just the third Division I-AA player to post four 1,000-yard rushing seasons. A second-team All-American as a senior, Baylark finished his collegiate career with 1,080 carries for 5,199 yards with 42 touchdowns.

Clady, Cutler Up for Awards

December 9th, 2008 - 11:08am by Adam ZinserOther posts by

Another big win for the Broncos, another round of award nominations.

Ryan Clady is up for Diet Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week while the quarterback he protects, Jay Cutler, is up for Fed Ex Air Player of the Week.

Clady led an offensive line that allowed QB Jay Cutler to pass for 286 yards and two touchdowns, prevented Kansas City from recording a sack and helped Denver total 139 yards rushing in the Broncos’ 24-17 win over the Chiefs. Though this is the first time Clady has been nominated, he is the fourth Bronco to be up for the award after Peyton Hillis, Spencer Larsen and Eddie Royal have all been nominated and won.

No other team in the league has had more than one rookie win the award — the Broncos have three and now potentially four.

Titans running back Chris Johnson, Texans running back Steve Slaton, Cardinals cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and Panthers running back Jonathan Stewart are the other rookies up for the honor.

Cutler completed 32 of 40 passes for 286 yards and two touchdowns in the Broncos’ 24-17 win over the Kansas City Chiefs. Cutler has already won this award twice in 2008, most recently after the Broncos’ win over the Jets.

Hillis Done for the Year

December 8th, 2008 - 2:41pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

Head Coach Mike Shanahan just announced in his press conference that Peyton Hillis will be placed on injured reserve after tearing his hamstring in Sunday’s win over the Chiefs.

Shanahan said it would be approximately an eight-week recovery for the rookie fullback.

This is another blow to the Broncos running back corps that has already seen four backs placed on IR — Anthony Alridge, Andre Hall, Michael Pittman and Ryan Torain.

Hillis had been playing well against the Chiefs, carrying eight times for 58 yards and a touchdown. He injured his hamstring while receiving a pass from Jay Cutler, leaping up high for the grab. As he came down with the ball, he landed with his leg fully extended, resulting in the tear.

“It Goes Deep”

December 5th, 2008 - 3:36pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

Much of the snow remained, and the temperature was probably still below freezing, but that didn’t keep the Broncos from being in high spirits as they wrapped up their week of practice Friday morning.

NEVER

Last night on the NFL Network, the Chargers and Raiders faced off in a game that had many a Bronco staring at the television.

Many hoped for the Raiders to pull the upset and push the Chargers further away from playoff contention, but at least one person at Dove Valley didn’t think along those lines — the Head Coach.

“I never pull for the Raiders,” Head Coach Mike Shanahan said after practice. “No matter what the case is. That shows you it goes deep.”

Thomas to Receive FBI Award

December 5th, 2008 - 10:24am by Adam ZinserOther posts by

Denver Broncos defensive tackle Marcus Thomas will receive a Federal Bureau of Investigation community leadership award for exceptional service in the public interest on Monday in a ceremony at the state capital in Denver, it was announced on Friday.

Thomas helped fund the purchase of 56,000 child identification kits for kindergarten students in the state of Colorado as part of the National Child Identification Program. These kits will be used to assist parents, school officials and law enforcement in locating missing children.

Thomas also will receive an FBI Field Office Award for child safety in recognition of his efforts.

The ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. Monday with Colorado Governor Bill Ritter Jr. and Special Agent James H. Davis presenting Thomas with his award.

We will be there to cover the event on Monday, and Broncos TV will provide video coverage as well.

The Final Prep Work

November 28th, 2008 - 4:53pm by Adam ZinserOther posts by

A day removed from enjoying plates full of good food, the Broncos got back to practice this morning. They enjoyed another early practice starting at 10:20 am as they wrapped up their preparation for the Jets.

And since we leave early for the long plane ride across the country tomorrow, the early schedule had all the players smiling.

WE KNOW WHERE WE STAND

A lot can be said about players focusing on only the game at hand and never looking down the road, and everyone in the Broncos locker room would agree with that.

At the same time, given the close race for the AFC West title, you can bet that the Broncos have a good feel for how the final stretch of the season is playing out.

“As a player you always tell yourself, ‘Let’s take it one week at a time,’ but I know we’re 6-5, San Diego’s 4-7, and in the AFC West whoever wins the division is going to be in the playoffs,” Ebenezer Ekuban said. “The way it’s looking right now, there’s going to be no wild card for second place. You recognize it, but does it take over your mind totally? No, it doesn’t. Our priority is still focusing on the next play and the next game.”

And in this next game against the Jets, Ekuban sees a pair of running backs in Thomas Jones and Leon Washington that look similar to the 1-2 punch in San Diego.

“They’re very comparable to Tomlinson and Sproles back there,” Ekuban said. “You have your north and south guy in Jones and your cutback, energy guy in Washington. It’s going to be a tough matchup.”

The Broncos Have Been Flexed…Again

November 28th, 2008 - 10:11am by Adam ZinserOther posts by

As is the case with this weekend’s matchup between the Broncos and Jets in New York, the Broncos contest against the Panthers in Carolina has been moved from its originally scheduled 1:00 p.m. EST to 4:15 p.m. EST.

The purpose for “flexible scheduling” is to ensure quality matchups in all the afternoon and primetime slots, and it allows teams to essentially play their way into the premium time slots on television.

The Pittsburgh Steelers contest at the Baltimore Ravens was also flexed to the 4:15 p.m. time slot.

The Broncos-Panthers game will still air on CBS.
