The first depth chart reflecting the 53-man roster was issued this morning, and, as with the depth charts throughout the preseason, it doesn’t necessarily reflect the order in which Broncos took the field throughout the August slate of games, although it does reflect the absence of the players that were released in the last six days.
… Paul Smith is the only player listed as fullback, meaning, of course, he’s on the first team. Cecil Sapp did start against Arizona on Thursday, and Mike Bell also saw time at the fullback along with Sapp and Smith …
… The running-back quintet breaks down as follows:
1. Travis Henry
2. Cecil Sapp
3. Mike Bell
4. Andre Hall
5. Selvin Young …
… Domenik Hixon is listed as the No. 1 punt and kickoff returner. On punts he’s followed by Jeff Shoate; on kickoffs he’s followed by Hall, Brian Clark and Mike Bell …
… Elvis Dumervil is shown as the No. 1 right defensive end. Jarvis Moss backs him up. Dumervil, like the rest of the starters, did not play against Arizona last Thursday …
… The tight ends are shown as follows:
1. Daniel Graham
2. Stephen Alexander
3. Tony Scheffler
4. Nate Jackson
Jackson and Graham both started each of the first three preseason games, although Jackson was listed on the fourth team throughout training camp and the preseason …
… Brandon Stokley and Javon Walker are listed as the first-team receivers. Brandon Marshall and Brian Clark are shown on the second team, with Domenik Hixon as the third-teamer. Of note, though, is that Marshall drew the starting assignment for the third preseason game against Cleveland when he, Walker and Stokley were all healthy …
… In spite of not starting throughout the preseason, Chris Kuper is still listed as the first-team right guard, with Montrae Holland listed as the second-teamer …
… Amon Gordon and Sam Adams are the first-team tackles, with Marcus Thomas and Antwon Burton shown on the second team. Alvin McKinley is listed on the third unit.

Hopefully they leave Stokley in the slot, where he thrives, and let Marshall stretch the field opposite Walker
Stokley has never gotten a shot at being the #2 so I say give him a chance and depending on his performance we can put him back as the slot reciever or keep him at #2. Stokley’s got the talent plus I want to see how he does as a #2 since he’s always been labeled as a slot reciever only.
I’m still intrigued by us keeping 5 RB’s. Are we really going to run that much or are they just not settled on how they want to handle the RB situation? Even more puzzling is that Selvin Young is 5th behind Andre Hall. Hall sure didn’t show much in his one appearance vs. what Young did the week before. Too, he’s often referred to as a “scat back,” not exactly the kind of back that thrives in this system. And yet, he’s ahead of Young who seems to be a perfect fit AND demonstrated it, go figure. As well, yes, it seems strange that Stokley, who has thrived in the slot, is listed as a starter. And here’s one from left field: Anyone think they’ll ever use Mike Leach as a TE considering I’ve understood he’s good quite good hands and he has to be able to block since after he snaps the ball he has to block the beef that comes charging thru the middle. And he has to have some sort of agility and speed because I’ve seen him as one of the first tacklers down the field on punts. That being after he snaps and blocks…
I actually think we’re going to see some surprises in the way players and formations are utilized this year. At the very least, it should be rather entertaining to see what Shanahan has up his sleeve.
Bell, Sapp and Henry in the backfield at the same time?
I hope Stokely will change his # to 87 and Marshall will change his # to 85 since Kircus and Mustard are gone. Wide receivers just don’t look good wearing a quarterback #. Andrew, do you know if Stokely and Marshall will change their jersey numbers before the Buffalo game? Thanks.
Can you tell us how accurate this depth chart compared to whats actually going to happen on Sunday?
Another way of saying they’re letting the four other RBs fight it out for the position of TRUE back-up.
I think they should use Sapp at FB, and Young as the change-of-pace back behind Henry… Lots of talent in the backfield though.
Ben Hamilton is hurt too…or has he cleared? If his concussion is still holding him out, that leaves three positions with no second teamer on the O-Line. That means there’s the practice squad team of Fenton, Eslinger and Washburn. I can see Eslinger playing ’cause he is durable and he never makes any mistakes/penalties. Maybe he can play guard.
Last year, there were 9 healthy OL players on the 53-man roster. This year there are six. Is this an expression of confidence?
What is the status of Hamilton?
Brandon Marshall is big, young, and extremely talented and he’s not starting? I am shocked but i dont expect this mental lapse to last long. Mike Shanahan will soon find out stokley is not ment to be a starter and should be placed in the slot (even though i rather have brian clark there). I expect big things from Marshall and i cant wait to see him physically dominate the opposing corners.
Andrew i dont understand! everything i have heard has said that marshal will be the number 2 reciever, which i believe will be regardless what they show, and also today on espnews they said that selvin young would be backing up henry and hall would be behind him with sapp and bell working in and out at the fullback position. what do u think will happen?
i really hope they put brandon marshall in the #1 spot where he belongs. even though i believe stokely is a very talented guy. i still think that Marshall should be there. He has speed lots of power and can get you those big plays when you need them,. or if you dont.
What about rod smith? Is he out for the season?
Walker, Marshall and Clarke recievers. Henry and Young tailbacks. Smith is fullback. Period.
you’re cray. selvin young is backup of Henry and brandon is WR2 stokley is very wicked
The #2 receiver was merely meant to placate Stokely. Stokely is still our “possession/ slot” receiver but I think Marshall will get considerable reps as the #2 receiver in 2-receiver sets. Hopefully Shanny uses our speed and talent at qb and receiver to take some shots deep. Most of our offseason focus seemed to be on getting guys that can put points on the board, so I imagine that Shannahan will be a little more aggressive with his play calling.
dude no they got the whole dept chart all messed up lol… whole bunch of players got realsed and injured
