The Weekend Trip: ‘Gittin ‘R Done’

December 18th, 2006 - 4:59am by Andrew

Matchup“Git ‘R Done.”

I can’t even say that those are three words. At best, it’s two-and-a-half, and one of them isn’t even spelled correctly. But somehow, they ring appropriate after the Broncos took a vital first step towards the playoffs with Sunday’s win.

They were the first words I noticed upon landing at Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport on Saturday. (And by the way, is there a cooler name for an airport?) One of the buses had the phrase brandished on its front with a novelty license plate. I found it a tad odd that the bus company would go for such personalization, but who am I to judge?

Still, all psuedo/wanna-be-Southern comedy aside (because Larry the Cable Guy is actually from Nebraska; you can look it up), I couldn’t help but think that was the simple theme of the weekend — getting it done.

Mission accomplished. The four-game losing streak had culled the Broncos’ 2006 campaign down to its most threadbare but essential goal — to win, by any means permissible within the rules. That meant going deep in the first three minutes, moving a cornerback-turned-safety back to his original position, providing a liberal dose of pass-rushing to an opposing rookie quarterback and being unafraid to turn to lesser-used players in crucial situations.

Mike Bell getting the majority of carries at tailback? It worked for two touchdowns.

Karl Paymah seeing copious playing time as the third cornerback? He merely led the Broncos in tackles and didn’t yield the big play that Larry Fitzgerald and Anquan Boldin have made their habit in recent weeks.

David Kircus filling in on punt returns? He provided an early spark with a 16-yard sprint on his first return.

Quincy Morgan back on kickoff returns? All he did was give the Broncos their longest such runback in nearly three years.

Steve Cargile playing in his first NFL regular-season game? Four special-teams tackles later, he’d shown why he received the coach’s call.

A collection of skill-position players around Jay Cutler that on some plays included Kircus and rookies Brandon Marshall and Bell, with a strong dose of Nate Jackson at tight end along with rookie Tony Scheffler? Using those backups helped the Broncos rest veterans like Javon Walker, Stephen Alexander and Rod Smith, while they continued moving the football all the while.

“Javon’s shoulder (was) banged up a little bit (and) my calf cramped up a little bit, so we have no problem letting those guys in the game and going out there and doing what they can do,” Smith said. “They get paid to go out there and go to work.”

All that, and a win, too.

Now that how you “git ‘r’ done.”

its about f’ing time too, man it was good to see a little life in those guys flying around too

Tatum or Mike need to step up though, after watching LT once again dominate a game…it just seems like we need a go to guy at HB, and neither of them has made the case for it this year

and sure, it was thw Cardinals D, but that Cutler bomb to Walker….a thing of beauty

  2. dianelnl says:

Yes that bomb was a thing of beauty, and the Broncos did “git ‘r done!”

    Go Broncos!!!!

Hello! Reguardless of who it was against, he just tied the record for 2 td’s in first three starts as a rookie. He has played continually better and next week when he does it against the Bengals everyone needs to talk about him like they talk about Romo. Cutler has more poise and a better arm than Romo yet noone wants to give him credit where credit is due. By the way 261 yards Plummer had how many starts and did he ever throw for 260 yards this year?

  4. UTBRCOLVR says:

Okay I was wrong Plummer did throw for more than 260 yards twice in his 11 games against Oakland and KC. But what we seen from Cutler was just the beginning he is coming out of his shell. He is severly underrated because of his school in college if he would have played for USC or ND or any better school he would have been top 5 pic. Oh well our gain and all i’ve got to say is I will always be greatful to plummer for a few great years but he wasn’t going to get us to the show and i truely belive in the next couple years Cutler will! Hey why not this year!

  5. DnvrBrncs100885 says:

I’m going out on a limb here… we will see Clinton Portis in a Broncos jersey next season.

  6. TLynch says:

Now that Cutler is playing, I am content not winning a Super Bowl this year or next year…I’d like for it to happen, but I am not expecting it like I was when Plummer was playing. I figure Cutler gets this season and next season to “learn”, but in his third year it better be deep into the playoffs. :) I am not sure why I am so demanding, but I have a feeling it is all Elway’s fault.

  7. leebov says:

Everyone played well!!! Champ got 2 int’s… The dline got sacks and pressure. Special teams got yards…. Cutler riffled a couple of bombs especially the TD to Walker… only the running backs where mediocre, Shanahan needs to address that next year, along with a better dline and oline if he wants a SUPERBOWL.

    Go Saints!!!LOL

  8. thesportsguru says:

Great win, I don’t who it was against. It is tough to win on the road in the NFL.

As for Cutler, he played great, and just the fact that the vertical passing game, along with the Tight End, is back in the game plan is a beautiful thing.

On a side-note….Is anyone else suspicious of the fact teh Darrent Williams is “hurt” the week after calling out teammates to the media, especially with the way he has played in recent weeks. Sure, he is probably dinged up, but everone is by Week 15. D-Fox proved he needs to stay at corner, and Curome Cox showed he can play a bit at Safety.

Guys like Cargile are exactly what we need on Special Teams and I was glad to see him on the field….

Broncos finally won a game!!! They owned Arizona. I finally think that everyone can rest easy now that they know what Jay Cutler can do when he is calm and ready for the game. Al Wilson is back which is good, and Champ led the defence with 2 interceptions. Cutler only had one or two interceptions I think. It was a good game.

  10. DnvrBrncs100885 says:

Extremely glad to see Darrent Williams inactive. It’s about time!!! This should definitely be the case next weekend as we are going up against three of the best WRs in the league. Foxworth, show Williams how its done!

  11. LetPlummerPlay says:

    First, I quote TLYNCH

“I am not sure why I am so demanding, but I have a feeling it is all Elway’s fault.

Hahahha. what are you talking about? You say you can wait 3 years for Cutler to take you deep into the playoffs? Hell, you waited 14 years for Elway to do that.

By the way, everyone else ranting and raving about Jay and him being sooo cool and collected and ready to win…MY GOD…it was against the flippin’ Arizona Cardinals….PLEASE

We have seen Cutler and this defense against real teams and we have seen them obliterated, so lets wait and see when once again, a real team comes into town next year.

  12. thesportsguru says:

Jake Plummer doesn’t make that throw to Javon Walker, period. It’s not up for discussion becuase jake can’t throw the ball 63 yards in the air like Jay can.

Three games this season there were plays that Jake had down field that he under-threw an open reciver becuase he doesn’t have the arm to do it.

I have been very clear in the past that I am a Bronco fan, and will support whoever is under center, but there is no doubt we are a better team with #6 in the backfield.

AS for Elway, I would count getting to the Super Bowl asa leading a team deep into the playoffs…In that case it was year 4, year 5, year 7, year 15 and year 16. Who knows if Cutler will match that, but I do know Jake did not in 10 years…

i finally figured out how to get a screen name for theses messege boards and i have to say i am excited to contribute.

i am relativley young so i am not so attached to john elway or wary of the shadow he casts. personally i believe that in football no matter how good an individual or certain individual is it takes all 53 guys on the roster to make a team succesful (from personal experience).

i think its kind of obvious that the offense is relativley young and it takes time for players to gell together, so i think people should be patient. between brandon marshall, tony scheffler and even javon walker (b/c it’s his first year here) im excited to see what will happen next season).

as for jay cutler he seems like a young QB the offense can begin to form around, i mean that throw to javon walker for the tuchdown gave me shivers it was so beautiful.

this running back situation is kind of perplexing. tantum bell needs to get a lot stronger if he wants to keep his job. the run scheme is built for tough downhill runners, and tatum has that potential he just needs more work. same thing for mike bell, he has the ablility he just needs the experience. hey and like DnvrBrncs100885 say who knows maybe we might get clinton portis back.

the offensive line is getting relativley old, and that combined with the kinds of d-lineman coming out of college, not matter how much experience they have we are gonna need to find a few more quality o-lineman. on the opposite side of the ball we need to do the same thing, im kind of hoping the bucs release simeon rice and maybe if we pick him up we can get a few more usefull years out of him.

as for the darrent williams situation (thesportsguru) that seems to be developing, im sure he will be corrected. with great leadership from people like john lynch, champ bailey, nick ferguson, and al wilson, he will eathier learn the way defense is played in denver or get demoted or possibly the boot.

  14. thesportsguru says:

That’s my concern about D-Will. There was another talented CB on this team that followed a similar path, and now he plays in Cincinnati….

I just hope D-Will doesn;t become another in a long line of high-draft-pick-burnouts for the Broncos.

  15. DnvrBrncs100885 says:

Well considering how well that corner played tonight against the Colts… I would have to say we are not missing out on him that much either. Basically, we just need to clone Champ Bailey and be done with it.

  16. dbroncofan_09 says:

I think that we might have a chance to get clinton portis, no doubt i like Mike Bell and Tatum Bell, which i call the ” Hells Bells”, running the ball, but i would sure like to have clinton portis in the backfield. and i think Scheffler, and Marshall will emerge into pretty good recievers in the NFL in a couple of years, by then if we still have everybody, including Clinton Portis and a couple of more good defensive linemen,. i think we could possibly have a Superbowl contender, or even one of the early Superbowl picks early in the season. and by that time i think Jay Cutler will be one of the Elite QB’s in the NFL. thats all i got to say. PEACE OUT Y

  17. broncosfrance says:

beautiful win but nothing’s done , we hane Cincy coming in town and we will really find out if Mike is a genious by switching the QB , if we want to be a contender , we need to beat contenders , see ya next week !

  18. TLynch says:

    “LetPlummerPlay”,

I said deep into the playoffs, which happened early in Elway’s career. I was 7 years old when “The Drive” took place and I was hooked ever since. And Elway took the Broncos deep into the playoffs more than just 5 times, some of you forget that Championship game that David Treadwell lost for us in Buffalo in 1991. Or the many other playoff games Elway has played in that didn’t produce a Super Bowl berth.

Why are you(LetPlummerPlay) so obsessed with Jake “The Snake” Plummer? Yes Jake is a true Pro, I have a tremendous amount of respect for his class and his ability as a quarterback. BUT he just wasn’t getting the job done…PERIOD. He isn’t John Elway and will not get alot of the breaks that Elway got for playing poorly. Let Plummer go on to another team that can use him. Oakland, Tampa Bay, Detriot, Minnesota…numerous teams need a quality quarterback and Jake Plummer IS a quality quarterback. Just not for an elite team with such high expectations.

I dislike saying that because I feel it takes away from the respect I have for the man as a player. However, I am not a dishonest person and I would not lie just to support a guy that I like a human being. Football is about winning and producing. Jake is a winner, but he will not play another down for the Denver Broncos in his career. I look forward to him coming back to Mile High as an opposing QB…THAT is when he will have another chance to show Broncomaniacs how much of a mistake it may have been to let him go.

Point is, LetPlummerPlay, get over yourself. You are beating a horse’s corpse into a bloody mangled sloppy mess…..LET IT GO! LET JAKE GO! Switch your favorite team to whatever team he goes off and plays for, root for them. Any real Bronco fan understands how important this change at quarterback is for the organizations future. We shall experience the majority of the growth pains of a rookie this year instead of next. Enough said.

  19. TLynch says:

    dbroncofan_09,

Clinton Portis isn’t very good and I don’t think Shanny liked his antics. Not only that, Portis is getting old for a RB. Time to draft one I think. We should keep Mike Bell…he is a hard runner. Tatum is disappointing for often than not. Anyone else notice that he goes down at the slightest touch most of the time? He breaks big plays when he isn’t really touched by anyone. If one were to play Madden 07 or something, Tatum’s “break tackle” rating would be in the low 20′s out of a possible 99. lol I doubt many old timers will understand that comparison. :)

  20. ablack1 says:

Tlynch well said about about LPP and his….issues.

The running game does need fixing and maybe your right clinton portis doesnt belong in denver, but its not couse of his antics,. i think denver is one of those organizations that jut fixes people, you learn to play with class or you dont play. you never know what might happen, javon caused some antics in green bay, got hurt and was traded. clinton portis caused some antics, got hurt, and with the way betts is playing portis might get traded…..seems kinda similar. but i agree, keep mike bell, he’s a hard nse guys and he can score touch downs, he just needs work.

Its also not just the running backs. the o-line is getting old, they may be very experienced but experience can only help so much. it seems like every one on the d-line is ethier wicked fast or wicked strong. with the knds of d-linemen coming out of college we need an upgrade. im not saying screw the whole lot of them, but maybe if we could slowly insert new linemen we could keep the cohesiveness of that group.

  21. dianelnl says:

    Amen TLynch! Well said.

I even liked how confident Jay looked when the defense was on the field. They kept showing him looking at the game from the bench, and you could see how much he wanted to be in there playing. It was great!

    Go Bronocs!

Trust me we wont get into the playoffs with jay cutler un less he kicks himself into over drive. We got cincy. dont forget we need to win all of our games. so we might not be able to do that with the rookie and a defence that is just getting back on their feet.

  23. bluetune says:

The thing that impressed me the most about Jay Cutler was that after throwing his one interception, he came right back and threw a completion into double coverge!

That showed incredible confidence for a rookie but more importantly showed he has tha same competetive fire in his belly that made John Elway one of the best! We all know that that one quality has been lacking in our two other quarterbacks.

The Cutler era is here…Thank You Jay!

  24. ablack1 says:

no matter how excited i am that cutler is starting now and showing us what the future may be like, im gonna miss #16. he’s a cool guy, classy and really is a team player. if there is any way for the broncos to keep him i think they should. he could be an excellent teacher and having a veteran around to help him through the rough streches (which are bound to come). he’s is not only a role model for cutler and other players but in the community as well, people like jake are to few and far these days.

  25. LetPlummerPlay says:

    TLYNCH and ABLACK1

Great analogy with the beating a dead horse. That’s what the Broncos have done to themselves for the next 4-5 years. They have become a team that will be beaten time and again by teams like the Chargers. Then the Chargers will laugh and say, we’re beating a DEAD HORSE, kinda like the Guns N’ Roses song. You say Elway took them to the bowl in the 4th year….Well Jake took them to the AFC CHAMP in 3 years….he was 7-3 this year, when Shanny decided to bench him. If the KC game would have been on Sunday instead of Thanksgiving, Jay would have started. So as you all know, the decision was made after Denver was 7-3….

There was EVERY CHANCE in the world that they could have gone to the Super Bowl this year. Well, that was obviously not a choice, once Shanny decided to roll the dice with the future. Jay has no fire, no ambition, you say look at him on the sideline? I do and he looks defeated everytime the camera is on him.

No rookie has ever won the superbowl, don’t fool yourselves, Jay will not lead them there this year….

To your point: I should go root for another team? I WILL TAKE YOU UP on that offer, as soon as Jake signs somewhere else. The Denver organization showd absolutley NO CLASS to someone that had taken them where no one since Elway had….The DENVER fans showed NO CLASS each time the majority of the 60K at home booed Jake every time they had the chance. There are plenty of ANTI Jake websites out there, run by DENVER citizens and DENVER fans….We just felt, we ought to SUPPORT the guy who got us to where we were. Hypocritical for us to now boo Cutler? Fine, call it what you will, the city of Denver showed their colors, and so now, it will be most appropriate when Jay Cutler fails, and 60K fans are booing him next year when he gets NO FURTHER than this year….

I can’t wait for Jake to sign with another team. The city of Denver has one local legend to hold onto, not tons of them like other cities, New York, Los Angeles to name two, so they have to HOLD ON so tightly to their one and only hero, no one else will ever be good enough!

Too bad, too bad for anyone behind center…..I think Carmelo Anthony said it best at half time, when Denver was playing Baltimore….He was asked who he was rooting for and he said, “BALTIMORE!”

CLASSIC. Sure, he’s from Baltimore, but if he felt an affinity at all for Denver fans, it would have come across and as he sat there on live television, he didn’t care, he said, “BALTIMORE!”

    I like Melo.

  26. rsm1956 says:

LPP go away, and stay away. You have shown you can’t add, and you don’t have any grasp on the play off picture. Now you have shown you can’t even remember last years Super Bowl. A rookie won it at QB. Add your site to a weight loss search. Your ignorance is enough to make anybody lose their appetite. Cincy’s D is no better than AZ’s D. Receiver and RB are close to the same. Palmer is better than Lienart, but not enough to make the difference. Denver’s O-line and D-line appreciate the rewards Cutler has produced. O on the field and D off the field more. There are still several scenarios where Denver could lose this week or next and still make the playoffs. A couple teams play tough teams both weeks. I don’t think Denver will win both games and stay in control of their own play off birth. I haven’t given up on a SB appearance.

  27. UTBRCOLVR says:

LPP what are you talking about? Jay has no fire, no ambition???? Are you crazy? Jake had the same chance to make that pass more than once this year and every single time he fired the ball short and it was either incomplete or intercepted. Jay has all the fire and ambition he needs to lead this team to the playoffs. Jay will pick apart the Cincy D and you know what i am pretty sure we won’t hear from you after he does. Jake is handling the switch like a man and with a lot of class. He isn’t bagging on Jay or Shanny and is backing the team! If you are such a big fan of him then why don’t you show some class and learn from what he is doing? We all appreciate your input cause it gives us something to laugh about at night with our families. So thank you for that but you really should do some research before you leave a comment. Don’t count Denver out yet we will adapt and overcome and if by some chance the weather turns bad cincy is going to struggle in Denver. Go Broncos!!!! Jay Rocks and after we beat Denver we’ll all see what the nay sayers have to say about Jay!

  28. LetPlummerPlay says:

    rsm1956

LET ME PLEASE CALL OUT RSM1956 who just made the most ignorant STATEMENT I have ever seen in my life. YOU THINK BEN ROTHLESSWHATEVER was a rookie last year? What planet are you on? If Ben was a rookie, and he had taken his team to the bowl like he did, he may have been the greatest QB ever…..ANYONE, and you proved you’re not anyone, WHO WATCHES football knows that Ben was not a rookie last year. OMG, wow, opinions are opinions and you can call me out for mine, BUT YOU SIMPLY CAN’T state a 3rd year QB was a rookie last year, he was in his second year…….YOUNG, BUT NOT A ROOKIE!
