The Offseason

May 9th, 2007 - 10:49am by domonique_foxworth

It’s very exciting to be embarking on the preliminary stages of a new season. We brought in a lot of new players who will add a lot to the team, and we’re excited about getting into this mini camp and starting to work together.

I think a lot of people don’t understand how much goes into our jobs, and how many people around here — not including us — are working towards making us better, like the training staff and the equipment guys and strength coaches and everybody upstairs. It’s a lot of people.

We’re here all the time. We get a couple of weeks off and other than that we have to be working out. I think everybody knows at this point that they’re not really “voluntary.” It’s called voluntary but how committed you are to the team is sometimes measured by whether you’re here or not. Everybody wants to be considered someone who’s committed to the team, so everybody shows up. It’s pretty much 100% participation all the time.

I think we’re going to have a really talented team — young and athletic guys. To be honest, I’d say the addition of Dre is the most exciting. Our secondary is pretty talented as it is. I think we had one of the best ones before, but at this point we definitely have hands-down the best secondary in the NFL. It’s up to us to prove because we have the talent to do so and we have the coaching staff to help us do so. I’m excited about the opportunity to learn from another veteran, and I’m also excited about pushing him to be as good as he can be because I’m not a bad player. It won’t be easy to just come and take all the reps.

Speaking of Dre, he’s a great guy. I’m fortunate to have met him and to be able to learn from him.

I’m not too worried about the offense. It makes our life a lot easier if we can get some point production like my rookie year. We had a lot more point production and we were just blowing people out. It was easier for us and we had a lot more interceptions because people were trying to come back from behind on us.

People don’t always know how everything’s connected. When things go well they want to give one person all the credit and when things go poorly they want to give one person all the blame. But everything is intertwined to the point that if a receiver has a bad game it can effect us defensively.

As far as the draft’s concerned, getting those defensive ends hopefully will allow for more pressure, which will make our corners and our safeties look a lot better. Everything’s interconnected.

I’m really excited about the offensive moves because Daniel Graham and Travis Henry will help provide points. And Jay’s coming on, so maybe we can start blowing people out again.

We’re really excited about the new coaches, too. We’ve had some meetings already to try and get the defense together and start learning it. It seems to be a defense that’s conducive to the talent that we have around here. It’s going to put a lot of pressure on the corners to perform and we havea three or four really good starting-quality corners. I think myself and Karl could probably start other places where there aren’t two Pro Bowl corners already here. I think we have a lot of talent in that position.

It puts a lot of pressure on us, and we welcome it.

Fox, best of luck this season. I can’t wait to see how the improved pass rush will help you guys out. I think you’ll be playing a lot of press man this year, and I definitely think it plays to all your strengths as a unit in the defensive backfield. Thanks for taking the time out to blog!

    Great blog!

I agree with everything you had to say… the interconnectivity of the offense and defense, and how no one piece is to blame.

Glad to hear you embracing the arrival of Dre, not everyone would be graceful… Now you have TWO great cornerbacks to learn with and push! Although I haven’t seen as much of Karl, I agree that you’re a starting calibre cornerback.

I’m curious though… have they been practicing you at Safety any? Or are you not allowed to share? lol.

    Thanks for posting!

Wow Fox…..I can’t stop thinking about all of the INTs the whole secondary is going to have this season. With the pass rush hopefully finally in full effect I can’t help but see Champ and Dre getting no less then 6 INTs and everybody else at least getting the chance to get 1. Denver has always been really good at stopping the run so once teams relize they can’t pass against us they will try to run it and we will stop them. Man I am excited to see the defense kick a$$. As for the offensive side of the ball, Henry is finally a back we can count on to take us to the running game we use to have. I see the Broncos making a big step foward for that 3rd Superbowl ring. GO BRONCOS!!!

P.S. You know what would be really excting. To have the Colts @ Broncos in AFC Championship Game and we beat them 42-10 like they did us 2 years in a row. I really hate those ba******

    Nice blog Foxworth!

I know they played you at safety last year a bit with the injuries, but have they ever tried Karl back there?

    Domonique,

Out of curiosity, is the defense/team going to do anything during the season to honor the memories of D. Williams and D. Nash? I mean, really the team, players, coaches, and everybody involved with the Denver Broncos have showed alot of support and sympathy, but I was wondering if anything was in the works by the players, like working with schools about gang violence, decals on helmets(this is almost expected, as long as NFL is okay with it), or anything of that nature.

Either way, good luck with the season, and continue to work your butt off. We all appreciate it.

    Keep us updated.

    Fox,

    You are absolutely right…

You have the talent to start on any other team that doesn’t already have two probowl corners.

What I think will put you over the top, is your smarts.

I’ve been more impressed by you as a player by seeing how smart you are.

You present yourself well, you were a player rep, you write well.

I look forward to this year, when you’re on the field, and going..

He’s at the 40, the 50 ohhhhhh you’re not gonna catch THE FOX!!

Hope you and your teammates have a healthy and successful football season. (13-3 record and a SuperBowl win can’t hurt.)

  9. RunYouOver says:

Glad to have you bloggin Fox!

Hope you have an injury free year.

You mention the pressure on your and Karl playing behind 2 pro-bowl corners. Has Champ helped you improve your game a lot? And do you think you may wind up moving to safety if that becomes a position of need?

  10. 24CHAMP24 says:

    Fox,

Good luck to you this season. I get the feeling you’ll have plenty of chances to make plays this year. Now get that defenses motivated and kick some ass!!!

Welcome to the Blogosphere, Fox!!! You’ll do great, I’m sure!!!

What are your thoughts of playing safety? There were reports last year that you weren’t very fond of it….

    Dominique,

I really enjoy reading your blogs/articles on the Denver Post and on here. You seem to be one of the few guys in professional sports that “gets it.” You want to win, you know your role on the team, you accept that role…and even seem to genuinely welcome it. The team will NEVER be able to cut a guy like you because you’re a team-first guy that has the talent to boot….kind of reminds me of Ricky Proehl. After reading this blog, I’ve decided that you’re now my favorite NFL player, even above Champ Bailey who was by far my favorite current Bronco. Dominique, you are 1000% class my man!

  14. BroncoBallard says:

Fox… thanks for taking the time to blog on the offseason and all of the awesome changes. I am so excited for this season no matter what happens!! Having been a Broncos fan all my life, even while living in the Bay Area, I have been there through the bad seasons. This season is going to rock!

Thanks for your humility and professionalism on and off the field! Keep up the great work!

  15. rememberD-Will&Nash says:

Nice blog Dude! The broncos are going to terrorise other teams this year with you, Champ, & Bly! I think denver should make a sign that says like “Darrent Williams & Damian Nash…. remember thy name!” oh & Super bowl or bust!!!

  16. rememberD-Will&Nash says:

    hi Thanks fox!!!!

  17. R.I.P. D-Will & D-Nash says:

Hey Domonique! I was just thinking, it’d be great if you changed your number to 27. It’d be a good way to remember such an important player and more importantly, a great man. Just a suggestion. I’m sure I’m speaking for all TRUE Denver Bronco fans when I say Darrant will be missed on and off the field and we’d all love to see you run out of that giant Bronco head in week two when we let the Raiders know they will NEVER EVER beat the greatest team in the NFL.

Hope to see you in 27 this upcoming year Domonique. And if you want to keep your number (22) then you could always just wear 27 for the preseason. GO BRONCOS!!!

  18. riddler says:

I honestly think that 27 should have went with Atwater. It’s tragic an sad what happend to D. Wills yes this is true, but I think that maybe a good tribute would be to highlight the 27 yard line on one end of the field and the 29 on the other. What you think Fox?

  19. The Dark Knight says:

It will be nice to have starting calibre db’s when we play these AFC teams that are loaded at the WR position. The Colts, Bengals and now the Patriots have WR’s that could cause problems for most NFL teams. Hopefully, with our db’s and pass rush, we won’t be one of them.

    Good blog Foxy!

I also like your analysis on “voluntary” workouts.

I can’t wait for next season! You’re going to do great, especially with all the veteran leadership.

And do it for our Broncos in a better place!

Thank you for starting this blog. From your past articles I expected quality, and I was not disappointed. When your football days are over, I would hope you will ramp up your writing efforts and continue them.

Regarding your football performances, I have said that Denver got away with three first-round choices when they selected D-Will, Paymah, and you. None of you disappointed in that area, either. It is to your credit that, while the loss of D-Will is a personal disaster, it did not have the impact on the quality of the secondary that it might have, were you not there.

Thank you, not only for your football and writing excellence, but for your obvious display of character, on and off the field.

Looking forward to the season. Hopefully all of the new players gel quickly and we can get back to 1997-1998 form. A Super Bowl win has been a long time coming.

I enjoyed reading your blog, Dominique! You have a great attitute towards your team and teammates, along with belief in yourself. What you said about one player always taking the blame when things don’t go well is so very true, when in fact every play is intertwined. Everyone has a part in what happens on the field. It’s too bad when fans sometimes don’t really think about that. As a fan, I can say I’m really excited about this coming season (just like I am every season). I hope you have a great year and opportunities for a few interceptions! Also I’m trying to find your book. I live in Topeka, KS and have checked with Barnes & Noble and Hastings. Any suggestions?

  34. hawgdriver says:

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us, we appreciate it. I really enjoyed your diary a couple years back, too. I have a lot of respect for you. I think you will leave a mark on the game, I saw flashes of it during your rookie year. You are one of my favorite players, and I wish you all the best! Keep up the hard work, we are all looking forward to seeing you guys put on a clinic next year.

  35. 16milehigh87 says:

I have never been disappointed with anything I have read from a member of this team. I still am not.

I look forward to the new season to see how the Coaches use each of you this season. The Broncos D looks awesome this year. I don’t think any team could possibly have a better secondary. I can’t remember a year when I was as excited about our defense.

Keep up the blogging as we fans are excited to hear from our favorite players. You are a class act to take time out of your busy life to let the public learn a little about who you are. I am grateful and honored to read your blog.

    Dom

I have been a fan since your senior year in college and was gald when the Broncos picked you up in the 05 draft. I think a lot of other people thought our later third round pick was going to be the steal but I’m glad you’ve proved them. You instantly became one of my favorite players when you chose to wear my number the double deuce (22) and since you played the position I played. I was wondering if you chose that number or it was kind of assigned to you. I know you rocked #6 for the Terps but thats not a legit number for a corner in the NFL with thier policies.

I was also wondering about your weight, I don’t think you should have fell so far in the draft but many felt it was because of your samller size (which really has little to do with being a corner), you still could make the tackle so I don’t know, but my question was have they or have you tried to add more weight and do you think it helps you or hinders you?

Also what other sports did you play if any?

Although corner is my number one position, I try to stay fresh at safety just in case I’m needed there. I wouldn’t necessarily say I don’t like safety; I just feel I’m a better corner than I am a safety. But whatever position that I can fill on this team I’ll be more than happy to fill it. I know that sounds fake, but I just want to get on the field and make plays.

As far as Darren and Damien are concerned I don’t know what’s in the works upstairs, but the players do a lot as it is. I think a lot of the players have — at least I have — the funeral programs up in my locker and we have wristbands. And we talk about the guys on a daily basis. I think that’s almost more important to us than the major thing, but I’m sure the team will put something together so we all — fans included — can celebrate both of their lives.

How much Champ has helped my game is a question I get asked a lot, actually. The answer is yes, he’s helped me with the entire transition from the day that I got here until now. He’s taken me under his wing off the field and on the field. It’s been an extreme blessing and it’s been a perfect situation. No better. It’s like coming into a team as a quarterback with John Elway there. It’s perfect.

Do the cornerbacks help show the quarterbacks what not to do in practice? That’s a great question. We have a lot of coaches who have a ton of experience. We might mention something to a quarterback like if he’s staring down a receiver, let him know about that. But for the most part we’re not more prepared to teach our quarterbacks than the coaches are so we let them do their job and we try to do ours.
